Colbert Declares Victory Over Twitter Activists: ‘Dark Forces’ Thwarted

    By CATHERINE THOMPSON

    ——————–

What would a world without Stephen Colbert look like?
    .
    .
Expressing surprise at the amount of media coverage the hashtag campaign garnered, Colbert marveled that “CNN even took a break from their Malaysian airliner coverage to report spotting what they thought was the wreckage of my show off the coast of Australia.”

“To recap, a web editor I’ve never met posts a tweet in my name on an account I don’t control, outrages a hashtag activist and the news media gets 72 hours of content,” he concluded. “The system worked.”

Proud of my 28 year old nephew who signed up for health insurance yesterday. Insurance isn’t offered at his employment, he’s healthy (thank you Lord) but he’s also CHEAP and as my Mother would say, “a hard head” i.e, stubborn. He decided to be a grown up and signed up for a great plan. He’ll pay $85/month out of pocket with a $1500 deductible and very low co-pays. I’m so relieved, and so Proud. Thank you President Obama. Obamacare is a BFD for my family.

What’s especially, astonishingly impressive is that the ObamaCare results came in the face of relentless, 24 hour a day nasty, negative propaganda from the GOP and the media. That means that millions and millions of people shut out the lies and actually thought for themselves. That’s one of the most hopeful signs I’ve seen from the American people since November 2012. Now the push to vote, vote, vote against the lies and negativity will be the great thing we have to do from now on.

We have some really brilliant minds on this blog so I have a question…The one issue that the Koch Brothers are really going to hone in on Democratic Senators running in Red States is that millions of people lost their (junk) insurance because of Obamacare. I’ve seen their ads lambasting those Dems for this. How should we respond to those ads? I don’t think saying, “keep it, but fix it” is a very good strategy. I’m sure these ads were focus group tested which is why they are spending millions running them. We need something catchy that will spark the public’s attention in response to this. Any ideas?

    • 58 desertflower
      April 1, 2014 at 8:35 am

Maybe the commercial should be embraced, then mocked for the junk insurance/ take your hard earned money, then dump you when you needed it most/ strategy.

    • April 1, 2014 at 8:51 am

I think it needs to be simple, clear and visual.
Maybe a side by side comparison: before ACA and after ACA. Black and white distinctions.
Show exactly why it’s junk insurance and how this law changes all that made it a junk purchase.

Before ACA: pre-existing conditions, arbitrary cancellations and fee increases, charging women more, escalating costs to fed budget, coverage limits.
After ACA: no pre-exisint conditions, fee increases must be publicly justified, women are not charged more, free preventative care and wellness, cost reduction to fed budget, no lifetime limits.

      Etc, etc, etc.

    • 60 jackiegrumbacher
      April 1, 2014 at 9:05 am

Donna, since we all get endless fundraising appeals from the DNC, I think we should push back and ask them to fund a specific campaign that counters these junk insurance lies in the red states. I, for one, would like some tangible evidence that the money I do sent accomplishes something besides funding salaries. And we tell them we want these ads to be first rate and smart, not some schlocky “defensive” crap. I would gladly stretch to contribute to such an effort and I know many of us here would as well. It isn’t enough for them to tell us they’re going to help Dems, I want to know how and this is one very tangible way. I think if we all push this, we have a chance to get their attention. Plus phone calls make a difference, too.

      • April 1, 2014 at 11:28 am

        THIS!!

I think you’ve just pinpointed what I find so annoying about these hundreds of emails with the scary subject lines. I get bombarded with about 2 -3 per hour on the days leading up to the end of the month but they never really say exactly what they’re doing with the money. It’s always to “FIGHT” but apart from the top leadership, I do not see evidence of Democrats fighting for anything!!

Rosie the Riveters Take White House by Storm, Get Hugs From Joe Biden

“Behind the Scenes With Rosie the Riveters at the White House”

    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2014/04/behind-the-scenes-with-rosie-the-riveters-at-the-white-house/

    —-

Phyllis Gould waited 12 years for the moment when she, one of the six original “Rosie the Riveters,” made it to the White House.
Gould, 92, and her five fellow “Rosie the Riveters,” who worked in a shipyard during World War II, were invited by Vice President Joe Biden Monday after a decades-long letter campaign by Gould that began when Bill Clinton was in office.

During the women’s visit to the White House, Gould not only got the hug from Biden that she asked for in her letter, they all also got a surprise visit from President Obama.

“My grandmother worked on an assembly line while her husband was in Patton’s army,” Obama said of his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham. “When the war was over, she was no longer working on the assembly line.”

The White House visit was not the last stop on the women’s tour of Washington, D.C. The group planned to have breakfast with Biden at the vice president’s mansion this morning and will meet with Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi for a VIP tour of the Capitol, followed by other visits to Cabinet offices around the city.

It’s all over, Obamacare haters! Why they’ve officially lost the battle

    By BRIAN BEUTLER

    ———————————————-

Now that it’s all over but the shouting, conservatives are watching the mechanisms they’ve employed to discredit the enrollment numbers shrink away from them. They are left to think wishfully that the new enrollees will not pay their premiums in overwhelming numbers, or deny that they exist altogether. The universe of Obamacare “success stories” is larger than the universe of Obamacare “horror stories” and many of said horror stories fall apart or are revealed to be ambiguous upon mild scrutiny.
    .
    .
If conservatives can plod through the five stages of grief over these developments they’ll not only have to come to terms with larger enrollment figures than they believed possible, but that the Affordable Care Act is basically working as intended.

Frankie Knuckles, house music ‘godfather,’ dead at 59

    Greg Kot
    7:07 a.m. CDT, April 1, 2014

In Chicago, Frankie Knuckles was called the “godfather,” not because of any underworld connections, but because he helped build house – a style of Chicago dance music that revolutionized club culture in the ‘70s and ‘80s and still resonates around the world today.

Knuckles died Monday at the age of 59, as confirmed by his longtime business partner, Frederick Dunson. More details would be forthcoming Tuesday, Dunson said, who said in an email that Knuckles “died unexpectedly this afternoon at home.” In addition to developing the sound and culture of house music, Knuckles would go on to mix records by major artists such as Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode.

Knuckles learned his craft as a club DJ in New York City, then moved to Chicago in the late ‘70s and developed a reputation as one of the city’s most influential dance-music tastemakers. He arrived in Chicago just as disco was losing steam. For many, disco literally went up in flames between games of a Chicago White Sox double header at Comiskey Park, when radio deejay Steve Dahl blew up hundreds of disco albums.

“I witnessed that caper that Steve Dahl pulled at Disco Demolition Night and it didn’t mean a thing to me or my crowd,” Knuckles told the Tribune. “But it scared the record companies, so they stopped signing disco artists and making disco records. So we created our own thing in Chicago to fill the gap

    ……………………..

He brought that knowledge west with him to Chicago, where he became known as “the godfather of Chicago house music” at the Warehouse and later the Power Plant. He would extend mixes of soul and R&B records and turn them into dance tracks, introduce new singles being produced by fledgling house artists and incorporate drum machines to emphasize the beat. In addition to building dynamic ebb-and-flow sets that would keep his dancefloor filled from midnight to noon on weekends, he would create theater-of-the-mind scenarios with inventive sound and lighting. “Sometimes I’d shut down all the lights and set up a record where it would sound like a speeding train was about to crash into the

Please, Republicans, Run Against Obamacare This Year and We’ll See You in November

    By Bob Cesca

    ———————————

Furthermore, if the Democrats — and this is a big “if” for the often PR-challenged Democrats — can make a case for the various aspects of the law rather than an overall pitch for it in broad terms, support for the ACA could turn out to be even more robust. As we’ve discussed here several times before, the various top-shelf benefits within the law each enjoy supermajority support… among Republicans.
    .
    .
Again, if the Democrats can appeal to voters based on each of the very popular line items in the law, they might even be able to swing a few moderate, open-minded Republicans (yes, they exist), and especially those Republicans who happen to have ACA coverage (yes, they exist, too). At the same time, there’s seven months to carpet bomb swing districts with all of the Obamacare success stories such as, you know, my success story. That’s more than enough time, and there’s more than enough material.

Still live in Fantasy Island…. http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/aca-climbs-higher-gop-denial-digs-deeper

As a practical matter, it really doesn’t much matter whether the total is 6.9 million or 7.1 million – it’s almost a matter of bragging rights at this point, but it doesn’t really affect the structural integrity of the system – and it’s also worth noting that yesterday wasn’t necessarily the inflexible deadline anyway. Coverage through Medicaid expansion will continue, and those who began the process before the deadline will still be allowed to finish.

But the larger takeaway remains the same. First, “Obamacare” is succeeding in ways no one was predicting a few months ago. Second, Republicans are in deep denial over facts that contradict everything they’ve chosen to believe about reality.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the unfortunate choice as chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, got the ball rolling on Sunday, suggesting there’s a conspiracy underway to inflate enrollment totals. “I think they’re cooking the books on this,” he told Fox News.

As Rachel noted on the show last night, by mid-day, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) had endorsed the conspiracy theory. Within hours, conservative media had received its marching orders.

    • 98 desertflower
      April 1, 2014 at 9:28 am

      Most of all, THIS:

Conservatives need to get a grip. For one thing, I’d recommend dealing with reality instead of denying it. For another, stop rooting for the American system to fail, because it’s just unseemly. (At the same time, it’d be nice if the right stopped seeing Americans getting access to affordable medical care as some kind of upsetting political setback.)

WTF. Rooting for failure is what they do. “Unseemly” is too nice.

Not only that, but so many people want to IMPROVE healthcare rather than get rid of it. So many people want single payer that THAT could be the very thing that drives them all to the polls to vote in Nov. If they understand that if Repubs get in control…this all goes away. No question. People WILL vote with their pocketbooks and for a more expansive healthcare system…this is how we get them all engaged!!

Then on Jan 20th, 2009 the ODS became incurable. It can be stabilized with March 23th 2010 ACA Law. But the cure is no longer possible and the death from their decease will occur on Jan 20th 2017, a second after 12:00 noon.

From “Doomed” To Boom: How The Press Missed The Obamacare Comeback Story

    By Eric Boehlert

    —————————-

So the larger media coverage question is, has the press been wed for so long to the Republican-friendly narrative of a broken and doomed Obamacare system that journalists are refusing to adjust the storyline as crucial new facts emerge?

Some newsrooms seem to be in denial as they strain to still portray Obamacare enrollment as a failure. Today’s doom-and-gloom Wall Street Journal headline: “New Technical Woes Hobble Health Sign-Ups at Zero Hour.” It wasn’t until the seventh paragraph that the Journal even mentioned that Obamacare had defied the odds and reached the seven million mark. The Washington Post’s front page headline likewise reads “HealthCare.gov hiccups amid deadline-day frenzy.”

As I reported above NYTimes all about glitghes and frenzy.
Also NY Daily News focus on problems not the enormous triumph of tens of millions people having healthier lives.

Freudian Slip:) ? Can you see what made me chuckle this morning? Should we tell him ?? :) From Plumline this morning…..

YET ANOTHER OBAMACARE VICTIM AD DEBUNKED: Meanwhile, FactCheck.org takes apart the latest Americans for Prosperity ad in Michigan against Dem Gary Peters, which features a mother of five who says her new plan under Obamacare is unaffordable and claims the law is “destroying the middle class:”
In fact, her case is an example of how middle-class families can benefit from the law — if they choose to do so…It turns out that Wendt found a cheaper, subsidized plan on the exchange, but declined to accept it because she did not want her children on the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Ass AFP’s ads have come under scrutiny, the victim tales have essentially withered away and disappeared.

Must have felt like a second Christmas when the check for doing that lie came in from AFP. What price her soul? Cheap

Obamacare enrollment drive’s secret weapon: Radio

    By Olivier Knox, Yahoo News

…But a look inside the Affordable Care Act’s all-out enrollment drive shows that — for all the talk about social media and unorthodox strategies — the Administration relied heavily in the final stretch on a century-old way to reach the public: Radio.

On Monday, senior Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett did her first radio interview at 8:30 am. By 6:30 pm, she was on her 21st, bringing her total over the past six weeks to 82.

She has done them from her office, home, car, an airport runway, her hotel room. Some DJs she has spoken to did not have health insurance before the Affordable Care Act but have now signed up, a White House aide said. Some DJs – like Joe Madison, to whom she spoke on Monday — have amplified the administration’s message by playing stories of callers helped by the law.

Overall, top administration officials – and celebrity surrogates – have taken part in some 300 individual radio interviews, according to administration figures shared with Yahoo News.

WE have talked a lot here about how the Dems need to run on Obamacare, defend it, not run away from it. I disagree, but only in a perspective viewpoint.

The GOP has said they will make Obamacare (notice how they are already starting to talk about it as the ACA?) a central issue in the campaign. First of all, it is important that the Dems make the GOP make it a central issue. Make the GOP talk about how they want to get rid of it. Make the GOP follow through on its threats. Don’t let them try to distract away from it with Benghazi, the IRS, etc.

The Dems don’t have to defend ObamaCare. It does a good job of that by itself. But the big reason is people who are on the defensive tend to lose. No defending. Attack.

Make the GOP defend its attempts to get rid of the ACA. Make it explain why it wants to take healthcare coverage away from 12 million people. Make it defend its decision to allow pre-existing conditions prevent someone from getting coverage. Make it defend reopening the doughnut hole for seniors. Make it defend dropping people under 26 from their parents’ policies. Make it defend giving insurance companuies the right to increase premiums not to provide better coverage but to give the executives more money. Make it defend, in those states which did not expand Medicaid coverage, why it is preventing close to 8 million people from getting coverage right now.

Push them into the corner. Obamacare is not a shield the Dems should use to defend themselves. It is the lance they can attack the GOP with and skewer them right through their so-called hearts.

perfect example of how sick “the news” and republicans are. those issues are life and death for many thousands of americans which can easily be improved right now with a sane congress, yet for these sick people its just something to joke about. that’s it right there in a nutshell.

[Good morning Chips, NW, TODers, everyone! HR4302 slipped through last night! And US Pres in 1997 was .....?]:

Doctors face as much as a 24 percent cut in Medicare fees when a deadline expires later today. So the Senate, in what has become an annual ritual, has scheduled an early evening vote on a measure to spare them. But the massively influential American Medical Association is urging a “no” vote.

At issue: Not whether to extend the “fix” that prevents Medicare fees from dropping — there is strong bipartisan support for this — but how to pay for it and whether to make it permanent.

    //////

By rushing a surprise voice vote on the patch, House leaders avoided putting members on the record in the doc fix controversy. A roll call would have forced members to chose between the AMA and the also influential AARP. The retirees’ lobby supports the short-term fix included in the House-passed H.R. 4302.

The AMA, along with some other organizations representing physician specialty groups oppose H.R. 4302, wanting instead to get a permanent fix to the doctors’ perennial problem.

The origins of that problem date to 1997, when Congress approved a formula called the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR), for determining physician fees under the federal Medicare program. [.....]

    The Horror…..oh, The !!!!!

Paul Ryan’s Budget Makes Wild New Claims About Obamacare

In a possible preview of the GOP’s election-year rhetoric, this year, Ryan warns — in almost apocalyptic terms — that the law “will undermine the private insurance” and “the competitive forces of the marketplace.” He even argues that it would “eventually lead to a single-payer system.”
