Tony Lee: Solemn Tributes Mark Anniversary Of Boston Marathon Bombing

An emotional year of recovery from the Boston Marathon bombings culminated with a stirring tribute on Tuesday to the victims, survivors and all those who helped the city overcome the tragic events of April 15, 2013. With the families of the four victims of the bombings and their aftermath sitting in the front row of the event hall at Hynes Convention Center, there were speeches from survivors, dignitaries and elected officials, as well as musical interludes led by the Boston Pops Esplanade and the Boston Children’s Chorus. Later, a ceremony in Copley Square included a moment of silence, a flag-raising at the marathon’s finish line and the toll of church bells at 2:50 p.m., the moment the bombs went off exactly one year ago. The theme was set by the first speaker, Rev. Liz Walker of Roxbury Presbyterian Church, who began by uttering the words, “There is a rising.” The reference, of course, was to the community’s remarkable rise from the ashes, as well as each of the victim’s personal journeys from pain and sadness to triumph and resolve. “There is no way to walk to Boylston Street without being reminded of the evil spilling of precious blood, the hateful strike on a world treasure,” Walker continued. “But we are also reminded of the amazing capacity of the human spirit to rise in heroism, compassion and sacrifice. “An ascension of the human spirit, left to its own devices, its divine design, it will rise, despite anything, despite everything.”

(The Richard family with Mayor Marty Walsh)

Walker was the first to reference the victims by name. She touched on the remarkable qualities of Lingzi Lu, Krystle Campbell, Sean Collier and 8-year-old Martin Richard, qualities their loved ones retain in their memories. “Although the memories still bring tears to our eyes, our heart aches for those who were lost, it still is a comfort to be here with family and friends who got us through that tragic day,” Menino said. “I want you to hear this solemn promise,” he began. “When the lights are dim, know that our support and love for you will never waver. Whatever you have to do to recover and carry on, know that the people of Boston and I are right there by your side.” Others who were injured graced the stage at the convention center, providing some of the more poignant words of the two-hour event.

First up was Patrick Downes, who — along with his wife — lost their left legs in the attack. Downes discussed the “humbling” degree of love that he and fellow survivors have received over the year. He would not wish the trials of recovery on anyone, but sees merit in the triumphs. “We do wish that all of you, at some point in your lives, feel as loved as we have felt over this last year,” Downes said. He also took comfort in knowing, even if only in spirit, the four “guardian angels” that were lost a year ago. “We will carry them in our hearts. To their families, know that you will never be alone. We remember those who died as pieces of us. The intellectual charm of Lingzi. Sean’s commitment to justice. Krystle’s infectious smile. And the childhood charm of Martin. We will choose to think of them not in association with hate, but forever connected to our commitment to peace. “Peace. That will be their lasting message to us.”

As rain fell and wind blew through the Back Bay, hundreds left the convention center and strolled under umbrellas toward the finish line to help reclaim that territory. With law enforcement officials lining Boylston Street and the stands in front of the Boston Public Library packed, relatives of victims emerged — followed by Menino, Biden, Walsh, Patrick and Grilk — and took a spot in front of the finish line. There, they stood at attention in the rain to take in a rendition of “God Bless America” by noted tenor Ronan Tynan. Then came a moment of silence and bells tolled from the Old South Church, steps from the finish line. An American flag was pulled skyward as the crowd sang the national anthem. MBTA transit police officer Richard Donohue Jr. helped raise the flag high above what Menino labeled as “hallowed ground.” Indeed, a year removed from the unthinkable, there was a rising.

It is what one does (as in the photo) when the spot light isn’t on one that counts the most Not what one does enriching oneself while claiming to be looking out for Us. With a hefty price tag of $250M.

Stolen unclassified documents is not Patriotic. Reporting on those stolen documents while one was heavily involved in obtaining the stolen classified documents is IMHO treasonous.

Showed so beautifully the care, compassion, love extended to the victims and the determination to redeem the day. This to me shows what America is.

So, one of our other libraries called to see if we had a book on the shelf. A patron was there insisting that she had returned it. The book? Coulter’s “Never Trust a Liberal Over Three”. I gleefully informed the librarian on the phone that, no, we didn’t have it on the shelf, and the patron was responsible for it. Tee. Hee.

Come on now – do Americans have to line up to file tax returns? Couldn’t this be more easily done on line? Don’t tell me Mitt if planning to run for president AGAIN, and is queuing up his photo-ops profile from now!

VC, there is no way this is true because there is no way Mitt prepares his own tax returns. He’s a multi- millionaire with complex holdings who almost certainly has a full staff of accountants prepare his taxes and send them electronically He may be standing in line at the post office to get stamps, but he’s not mailing taxes.

I know THAT, JG! I find the arrogance of the Romneys unbelievable and insulting – they regularly assume that the general public is stupid. I am willing to admit however that they probably do so because so many in their voter base ARE stupid.

If anything he’s buying stamps but why when he can send a flunky….I doubt if Willard is filing and paying his return today. I am sure his accountants have filed an extension because they have to get creative in writing off his campaign losses…hahahahahaha!

What actually happens if it’s late? I used to be a last minute filer, biting nails, sweating, then running to post before deadline, until I discovered here it didn’t really matter if you were getting money back. If not, you only had to pay whatever interests were incurred from deadline to when you did file. Of course, that was the last time mine got filed on time!

The events in Boston today made me think—again—-that most Americans are good, caring people. I often think it is a shame that we get a distorted view—-on the ‘internets’ and from the media—- due to the attention paid the most loud, the most crazy, the most outrageous among us. Most people are just going about their business, living decent lives, being kind to their neighbors, doing good deeds, caring about each other, are there to support and aid when things go wrong.

I certainly did not get his meaning of “It’s how you get your paycheck.” Meaning standing in line? Or meaning paying your taxes is how you get your paycheck? Or does he mean you have to stand in line to get your paycheck? If he means the later can you imagine any of the Romney’s standing in line getting a paycheck?

    • April 15, 2014 at 8:37 pm

      Talk about clueless.

His father is “unemployed” and pays ridiculously low taxes on “investments.” If (Thank God, voters had more sense!) #NoTermMitt and GrannyStarver (what was Pierce’s term) Ryan were in the WH, there would be more starving Americans so that billionaires could continue to think up ways to profit off the federal government and Mother Nature.

I think an R-money presidency would have been far worse than we can imagine.

He’s got at least 2 sons (Josh and Tagg) who would put Dick Cheney’s cronyism to shame.

They would wheel and deal for themselves while we would hear crickets from the MSM.

So glad that Simon Malloy has blown the cover off of Cilizza.

I know that MSM is irrelevant in TODville (except to poke fun at or to call on the carpet), but I’m wondering if average Americans are beginning to see that the Koch/MSM is pulling the wool over their eyes?

Walmart Gets $7.8 Billion ‘Bill’ for Its Taxpayer-Funded Breaks, Subsidies
New report reveals how tax system ‘provides special treatment to America’s biggest corporations and richest families leaving individual taxpayers and small businesses to pick up the tab.’

Walmart and the Walton family are the recipients of “special treatment” thanks to a tax system that allows them to rake in $7.8 billion a year from tax breaks and taxpayer subsidies, a new report reveals.

A Black Friday protest outside a Chicago Walmart in 2013. (Photo: Bob Simpson/cc/flickr)
Armed with this news, a group of Walmart workers and taxpayers delivered a $7.8 billion tax bill — an amount that could be used to fund over 105,000 new public school teachers — to the Phoenix-area home of Walmart Chairman Rob Walton.

“Even though Walmart is making $16 billion in profits, the Waltons seem to think the American people should be providing them another $8 billion in tax breaks,” Anthony Goytia, who’s worked at Walmart for two years, said in a statement. “When the richest family in America isn’t paying its fair share, it’s no wonder that our children’s schools, our roads and basic public programs are getting cut left and right.”

We don’t have a debt/deficit problem in America! We have a TAX FAIRNESS and SPECIAL PRIVILEGE FOR CORPORATIONS PROBLEM!!

  35. April 15, 2014 at 7:37 pm

Ok, it’s one thing to procrastinate filing your taxes. It’s another thing to wait UNTIL TODAY to even call to see if we still have tax forms. And then to act incredulous when I say, No, we’re out of the state forms.

Hello TOD!! Question for Californians or anyone that can provide answers–what is the latest on the debate over California High Speed Rail? Last I heard, a California judge prevented the project from proceeding because of insufficient funds and resistance from farmers opposed to selling off their farmlands to the government. It’s been forecasted that the project will cost at least 50 billion dollars as opposed to the 16 billion federal funding allocated. I hope the issue is resolved soon so construction can begin on this. United States is probably the only advanced nation without a functioning 21st century rail system. We are so far behind Europe and some parts of Asia in this particular area is not even funny. I love high speed rail and I hope California can lead the way on this, and hopefully the rest of the country will follow suit.

  41. April 15, 2014 at 8:16 pm

Urge all of you to read the full report. Here’s one segment:

“The anti-terrorist operation (ATO). The whole day was spent in anticipation of beginning it.

The Russian media have even begun to get properly hysterical, reminiscent of the mad Cassandra: “I see Troy in flames!” [Greek mythology]. It was as if Sloviansk had already disappeared under mountains of civilian corpses, shot by the Banderite army.

In fact, the whole day was spent in preparations for the ATO events. Active steps were carried out in a highly confined way – and with success. In particular, the airfield in Kramatorsk was liberated. Whereas in Sloviansk, separatists who tried to attack the military airfield were driven away like a pack of stray dogs.

However, the lack of action throughout the entirety of Donbas should not elicit pessimism. A balanced and thorough preparation is underway. We should remember that the leaders of the operation were appointed only very recently.”

No photos of the lying bishop’s actual taxes? After all, in 2012, Politifact termed at least 39 Pants On Fire awards attributed to the bishop. So please, a twit picture showing the back of a dark hair Romney is NOT evidence. Reagan said Trust, but verified. Until the Bishop shows Us what he mailed in Technicolor, No Can’t Do. “Ministry of Defence of Ukraine

Today, on the 15th of April, the Russian news agencies “Interfax” and “Echo of Moscow” stated that cadets from Lviv Ground Forces Academy named after Hetman Sahaidachny were armed and “sent to a civil war in the Eastern part of the country”.

This fake news was supported by a picture which shows young people wearing military uniforms of a type that has no relation not only to the armed forces, but to any other military units of Ukraine, while, suspiciously, looks very similar to a Russian army’s uniform:

    http://www.echo.msk.ru/news/1300762-echo.html

According to the head of Lviv Ground Forces Academy, Lieutenant-General Pavel Tkachuk, this information is completely false and can be viewed as yet another failed attempt of Russian special services to destabilize the situation in Ukraine and to split the Ukrainian society.”

I have a CPA do my taxes and I file electronically and I just make a middle class living with basically mortgage, property taxes and home office deductions. Hello my friend….so nice to see you too. Hope all is well with you. In the mornings when I lurk on TOD from my cell phone I see that you posted and hoped that one day I would catch you while I am on here in the afternoon or evening. It’s only 7:42PM here on the west coast, where are you?

Very interesting—-if they can pull this off—–if WE can pull this off, it may be the most significant money ever spent…….

Thank you Nerdy for Boston coverage. Late to news today but as usual, I miss nothing with TOD extensive coverage.
