    Thanks Chips for this wonderful Saturday R & S round-up. I don’t know how our President can so seamlessly transition from a full day at the Easter Egg Roll to an action-jammed Asian tour. I just don’t know how he does it!

    So which harshtag are we using to report PBO’s trip?

    since most of the media, as usual, is ignoring PBO’s trip until they can find a “scandal”, a “malfunction”, a “hot mic” or something negative they can report on;

    I see some in the NSC presss are using #ObamainMalaysia and the US Embassy seems to be using #OBAMAinKL for this section of the visit in Kuala Lumpur

    • 23 anniebella

      I don’t want to hear from the media abut POTUS trip, all they are saying is how it has been a disappointment. Let POTUS go do his job, and let the media keep searching for that missing plane and telling us how wonderful William and Kate trip was. I guess I shouldn’t say all media is bad.

        April 26, 2014 at 11:34 am

        yes, the media is always negative about PBO – that is why we must fill their place with our own reporting;

        any positive story about PBO and his team that comes my way is always shared or re-tweeted – I don’t care how many times I have to forward the same positive story;

    At least some of the participants in the White House Easter Egg Roll were identified;

    The host of TJMSshow, Mr. Tom Joyner , has always been unapologetic about his support from PBO – even from the very start when not many were lining up behind POTUS;

    It is nice to see his granddaughter and the entire family of his son (Tom Joyner Junior) get a chance to interact with POTUS and FLOTUS;

    Smartypant’s ••► “What divides us about racism: intent ”

    //……………..
    Notice that she [Sotomayor] totally avoids the question of intent and instead is focused on the effects of racism. That is the great divide on the topic of racism that we are facing today. Previous courts that understood this divide have codified Sotomayor’s view into law with something called disparate impact. It holds that “facially neutral” practices (ie, colorblind) are not sufficient to combat discrimination.

    A facially neutral employment practice is one that does not appear to be discriminatory on its face; rather it is one that is discriminatory in its application or effect. Where a disparate impact is shown, the plaintiff can prevail without the necessity of showing intentional discrimination…

    This legal standard is why Sec. of Labor Thomas Perez came under fire during his confirmation hearings for his prior work as the head of DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. He did everything he could to avoid a case on the topic of disparate impact getting to the Supreme Court – knowing that doing away with it is the next agenda for the Roberts Court. That’s why we need to keep an eye on this rather obscure standard…if struck down, we would be left with having to demonstrate intent to prove discrimination.

        Henry Thomas Sampson – Inventor of the modern cellular phones - Written by newcommunity.org – Sunday, 07 August 2005

        ‘On July 6th, 1971, Henry T. Sampson invented the “gamma-electric cell”, which pertains to Nuclear Reactor use. According to Dr. Sampson, the Gamma Electric Cell, patented July 6, 1971, Patent No. 3,591,860 produces stable high-voltage output and current to detect radiation in the ground.

        Born in Jackson, Mississippi, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1956. He went on to the University of California, Los Angeles where he graduated with an MS degree in engineering in 1961; University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, MS in Nuclear Engineering in 1965, and a PHD in 1967.

        Mobile Communications took a big step forward in 1983 with the invention of the Cellular System regulating the portable telephones, which use radio waves to transmit and receive audio signals. Before this time, mobile telephone service in the United States, consisting mainly of car phones, was extremely limited because metropolitan areas had only one antenna for these purposes. In addition, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigned only 12 to 24 frequencies to each area, which meant that only that many calls could occur at a time.

          (From your link) And Dr. Sampson was also a former Navy civilian!

          “Henry T. Sampson worked as a research Chemical Engineer at the US Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, California. 1956-61. Henry T. Sampson then moved on to the Aerospace Corp, El Segundo, California. His titles include: Project Engineer, 1967-81, director of Planning and Operations Directorate of Space Test Program, 1981-, and Co-inventor of gamma-electric cell.”

          Many people don’t realize the “technology transfer” that goes on between the military and private industry, that has benefited all of us (from the airplane to the cell phone, and lots more). The military has the need, private industry is contracted to produce the technology, and then private interests have more to sell to make their profits. It’s still some genius like Dr. Sampson who was at its core.

          And the comment of the naysayer (in the tweet) reminded me that the Navy often credits itself with the invention of things like the overhead projector (for training aboard ship), when – in that case – actually only a piece of the technology was invented by Navy scientists. But a very critical piece. Still doesn’t stop the Navy from being credited. (And, yes, we can thank the Navy and others for having to sit through many boring training classes in our careers or what I like to call Death by Overhead Projector.)

But some working stiff African American or Mexican American that barely makes it sets this guy off. I truly don’t understand this type of thinking, the guy probably has everything a person could want in two lifetimes, but he wants to make life as miserable as possible for those that might be less fortunate than he is.

    The NBA is more concerned about a player showing up with a goddamn *doo-rag on his head at a post-game press conference than they are with this guy Sterling spewing his venom. I hope the NBA is feeling the pressure this morning.

    *doo-rag (noun) a piece of fabric in the form of a cap that the brothers wear to bed at night in order to have their waves popping the next morning.

    G-7 Leaders Statement on Ukraine

    We, the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission, join in expressing our deep concern at the continued efforts by separatists backed by Russia to destabilize eastern Ukraine and our commitment to taking further steps to ensure a peaceful and stable environment for the May 25 presidential election.

    We welcomed the positive steps taken by Ukraine to meet its commitments under the Geneva accord of April 17 by Ukraine, Russia, the European Union, and the United States. These actions include working towards constitutional reform and decentralization, proposing an amnesty law for those who will peacefully leave the buildings they have seized in eastern Ukraine, and supporting the work of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). We also note that the Government of Ukraine has acted with restraint in dealing with the armed bands illegally occupying government buildings and forming illegal checkpoints.

    In contrast, Russia has taken no concrete actions in support of the Geneva accord. It has not publicly supported the accord, nor condemned the acts of pro-separatists seeking to destabilize Ukraine, nor called on armed militants to leave peacefully the government buildings they’ve occupied and put down their arms. Instead, it has continued to escalate tensions by increasingly concerning rhetoric and ongoing threatening military manoeuvres on Ukraine’s border.

    We reiterate our strong condemnation of Russia’s illegal attempt to annex Crimea and Sevastopol, which we do not recognize. We will now follow through on the full legal and practical consequences of this illegal annexation, including but not limited to the economic, trade and financial areas.

    We have now agreed that we will move swiftly to impose additional sanctions on Russia. Given the urgency of securing the opportunity for a successful and peaceful democratic vote next month in Ukraine’s presidential elections, we have committed to act urgently to intensify targeted sanctions and measures to increase the costs of Russia’s actions.

    Russia’s actions in Ukraine and the response from the international community already have imposed significant costs on its economy. While we continue to prepare to move to broader, coordinated sanctions, including sectoral measures should circumstances warrant, as we committed to in The Hague on March 24, we underscore that the door remains open to a diplomatic resolution of this crisis, on the basis of the Geneva accord. We urge Russia to join us in committing to that path.

    “The government left the door wide open for millions of Americans to be excused from the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that most people must carry health insurance or pay a fine, but so far relatively few have asked for such a pardon.

    About 77,000 families and individuals have requested exemptions from the health-care law’s so-called individual mandate, according to internal government documents obtained by The Washington Post. As of April 20, officials had approved tens of thousands of exemption requests and rejected none.

    The rest are on hold or in the process of being vetted. Even so, the numbers are relatively small compared with the 8 million who have enrolled in private coverage on the state and federal marketplaces — a sign that people taking action as a result of the health-care law are by and large choosing to comply with the mandate, long the most unpopular aspect of the program.”

    My two cents regarding the midterms:

    I remember watching a clip of Senator Obama watching the election returns in 2006. He was having a great time saying it was a lot more fun than campaigning, working behind the scenes to get a majority of dems elected. I just know that our multi tasking master strategist POTUS knows which buttons to push behind the scenes to ensure that his agenda and accomplishments are promoted and protected.

    Our job, of course, is to follow the leader.

    Not quite my style, but I figured it’d get a few chuckles in the village. Reminds me of that earnest little kid (Chips likes) who spoke volumes with his finger and his facial expression.
