Well done, Chipsticks! Somehow you just know when the time is right!! May a ‘certain bear’ go walking on your property one day, across the bonny green!! (just don’t faint, ok?!) Danny will know the vibes and will undoubtedly wag his whole body in welcome!!

…..I’ve been a Little League baseball coach for 10 years and 20 seasons; first with my 15 year-old sophomore son Luke who has graduated way beyond his Dad coach to high school varsity baseball, and now with my 11 year old son Jack—who got to meet the President of the United States at his game on Monday night. The expressions on the kid’s faces when Obama walked on to their field were magical and priceless. It’s rather unexpected to have the President show up on your baseball diamond, talk to your team and shake hands with all your players as a warm-up to your game. But this is Washington. One of the three Washington Post stories featured a wonderful team picture with the President and our Tigers, with his arm around the shoulder of Jack. My wife Joy says we’re going to frame that one…..

After taking some minutes to talk to the players, shake every kid’s hand, and do a picture with each of the four teams; the President threw out the first pitch to my Tigers catcher, Danny Ringel who was ready for the Pitcher-in- Chief at home plate. When local news stations interviewed the 10-year-old after the game, Danny said, “I don’t see him every day. It’s sort of grand. It just felt amazing,” Like a smart catcher, Danny told the press that the President’s pitch “was outside…but good.” It was a little outside, but Danny snagged it, causing the President to point to Danny and say, “You saved me from grounding. Thanks man!” Danny later told me, “I didn’t know whether to throw it back to him, so I just walked out to the mound and gave him the ball.” The President then signed the ball for Danny, who now has his favorite thing in the world. In the end, the Tigers were victorious. But for Danny Ringel, to be able to catch and keep a ball signed by the President of the United States probably beats just about anything.

The President’s visit inspired our whole Tigers team and they had their best game ever! Twelve runs on 12 hits! Two of our players got their first hits of the season and the Washington Post reported that “Jack Wallis had a double, triple and homer, and Della Carney, one of just two girls in her division, made a stellar catch in left field.” Jack was quite surprised when his mother showed him the article at breakfast this morning; he thought for a moment, and asked, “Do you think this will help with my scouting prospects?”…….

“The expressions on the kid’s faces when Obama walked on to their field were magical and priceless.”

I know I’m a broken record…but I’ll keep repeating that these kids were mere tots when PBO got elected…they probably never thought about the Presidency until the last few years, so he’s basically all they’ve known. They should be taking him for granted, but they aren’t….

Hopef, how do you take LIGHT for granted? When you are in the presence of greatness, I think you cannot help but be uplifted (if your soul isn’t blackened by hatred).

You are 100% right Vc! I just continue to be awed and inspired by our youngest citizens’ interactions with this great man. I’m reduced to being just a silly old broken record at this point!

If you ask me, Hf, it’s far better to repeat the ‘good stuff’, so don’t be shy. We have an abundance of negativity floating around vis-a-vis our Pres; being awed by the repeated evidence of his open, welcoming spirit feels just right to me.

So the veterans will be used as some politic ploy by the Republicans, as if no one but Democrats has been in charge. As always it’s all Obama’s fault. We Republicans couldn’t and didn’t do a thing.

As an ex-military and strict follower of the UCMJ, I think Shinseki has to go. He broke the cardinal rule. NEVER let a problem hit your Commanders desk unsolved if you had the authority to deal with it.

Totally agree with the merits of what you wrote, YA. Shinseki needs to offer his resignation because of the resultant “loss of confidence” – then if the President doesn’t accept it and wants him to stay and fix the current mess, at least the offer to resign should be made public (for good order and discipline, as you intimate).

The situation at the VA is deadly serious and, agree, Shinseki had the authority to have dealt with it.

Washington (AFP) – Sea level rise is threatening the majority of NASA’s launch pads and multi-billion dollar complexes famous for training astronauts and launching historic missions to space, scientists said on Tuesday. From Cape Canaveral in Florida to mission control in Houston, the US space agency is busily building seawalls where possible and moving some buildings further inland.

Five of seven major NASA centers are located along the coast. Experts say that proximity to water is a logistical necessity for launching rockets and testing spacecraft. Many NASA centers have already faced costly damage from encroaching water, coastal erosion and potent hurricanes, said a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists. Perhaps the most iconic launchpad lies in Florida at the Kennedy Space Center, the liftoff point for the Apollo missions to the Moon and many space shuttle flights over the past three decades.

“According to NASA’s planning and development office, rising sea levels are the single largest threat to the Kennedy Space Center’s continued operations,” said the report, which also listed other historic sites across the United States that are threatened by sea level rise. They include the Statue of Liberty in New York, the first permanent British colony in North America at Jamestown Island in Virginia, and historic Charleston, South Carolina…….

    • May 21, 2014 at 8:44 pm

I was a child during the golden age of space flight, when the popular culture revolved around anything “astro” (think Jetsons).

So many of the Gemini flights were aborted in the early 1960s because of poor weather in Florida.

I was a broken record then, asking my Mother “Why don’t they launch in California?” because it was always sunny when the flights in Florida were cancelled.

So my question now is… “Why don’t they launch in California?” Edwards AFB is in the high desert and the total number of overcast days in a year is probably two weeks worth.

Climate change is a concern, but this is an enormous country with lots of resources.

Elon Musk has the right idea — his spaceport is in New Mexico.

      • May 21, 2014 at 8:55 pm

The first thought that came to mind is just like military bases purposefully spread in all congressional districts…..the outcry from the delegation of congress from Florida & Texas etc….. would be jobs ” they are trying to kill our economy based on the stations being there” that is what I recall Sen. Nelson screaming when President Obama ended the flights to the moon….but what do I know?

        • May 21, 2014 at 9:03 pm

Drives me nuts when the GOP does that.

Expect to hear a lot of that in the coming months, since Defense Secretary Hagel is working on budget cuts for the military.

Also, forgot to add a tidbit to the bit about New Mexico — the country’s highest capital is Santa Fe, at over 7,000 feet. Even the “lower” elevations of the desolate desert (e.g., Lordsburg NM in the southeast) are at 5,000 feet. That’s what the desert looks like along the continental divide.

I will like to believe that his tweets where before the ceremony. He is 23 yrs old. He wasn’t drafted. The MN Vikings took him, but later let him go. He’s now doing much better at the Seahawks.

I really love the way the gentleman on the park bench is so quick to rise to his feet, hand out, incredulous facial expression, so much respect. Here is the President walking toward him. The woman is nearly there, balancing whatever that is in her hands. Fantastic. Send that bear this way, I’ll shake his hand.

For magapie, dakota and other NM lurkers:

Here’s a tweet from the junior Senator from New Mexico:

    From the article:
“Obama’s planned announcement marks the second national monument he has designated in New Mexico. He established the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument in March 2013.

The president’s decision to protect the southern New Mexico mountain country comes on the heels of legislation that Sens. Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall, both New Mexico Democrats, introduced in December.”

Speaking of Swiss Bank accounts… (I’m sure there was discussion here yesterday about Swiss Banks — still way behind in my lurking duties.)

Two associates of President Vladimir Putin profited from a state scheme to buy expensive medical equipment – and sent money to Swiss bank accounts linked to a property known as “Putin’s palace”
