Yes, opposition to Obamacare is tied up with race

    By Paul Waldman

    ————————————-

No one who pays any attention to conservative media can honestly deny that this has been the case. The idea that Barack Obama is leading an army of black people coming to exact revenge on whites for past sins has been a staple of conservative rhetoric since the beginning of his presidency. Often, this is framed in terms of reparations for slavery:
    .
    .
This is the rhetoric in which conservatives have been marinating for five years. Given that, it is not at all surprising that for some of them — I repeat, for some of them — ideas about Obama’s policies, including the Affordable Care Act, are inextricably bound to their feelings, whether conscious or unconscious, about race. It would be irresponsible and unfair to say that all or even most opposition to the ACA is rooted in racism. But it would be blind to deny that race has had a role in keeping that opposition so fervid for so long.

LH, the reaction among R’s in the last few days over Sen. Jay Rockefeller voicing this very obvious truth has been amazing to see. Those who view everything our president says and does through their own narrow lens of bigotry are outraged when they are called on it. More of us need to call them on it all the time. Put them on the defense for once.

Exactly JG. I think the Dems should be relentless in calling them out. Make them squirm. The media will tip toe around the issue and try to give the GOP cover at every opportunity. Truth telling and circumventing the media firewall is paramount.

MCCONNELL HYPOCRISY – TIES TO DECOUPLE ACA & KYNECT

Mitch McConnell Softens Opposition To Obamacare

      ———————————–

In a stunning reversal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) suggested on Friday that he would not support repealing Kynect, Kentucky’s state-run health care exchange. The marketplace has been a model for effective Affordable Care Act implementation, enrolling over 400,000 people in health insurance coverage since October.

McConnell reiterated his support for repealing the Affordable Care Act at a press conference in Louisville, Kentucky, but would not say if Kentuckians enrolled in coverage should lose insurance. Responding to questions from WHAS reporter Joe Arnold about whether the state’s exchange should be dismantled, McConnell said, “I think that’s unconnected to my comments about the overall question here.”

      GIBBERISH ….

McConnell sees distinction between ACA, ACA exchanges

      BY Steve Benen

      —————————–

But if the AP’s rough account is accurate, the Senate Minority Leader’s position is plainly incoherent. It’s simply not possible to separate the law’s exchange marketplaces from the law itself. Like it or not, one is a key part of the other. The federal law was responsible for creating and funding the existence of the state exchange. When consumers – in Kentucky and elsewhere – use these marketplaces to sign up for private coverage, many are able to afford the insurance thanks to subsidies made possible by the federal law Republicans have been desperate to obliterate.

Or put another way, when McConnell says he wants to destroy the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, “root and branch,” he necessarily means eliminating the marketplaces where insurers compete for consumers’ business – it’s one of the “branches.”
      .
      .
Update: Joe Sonka’s report offers details the AP account does not. Note that the senator specifically says the future of Kentucky’s system is “unconnected” to his plans for the federal law.

LH, McConnell has given Allyson Grimes a mile wide soft spot for attack on this one. She should not let this blatant lie rest. If she doesn’t do it, I hope Gov. Bashear does.

      Happy Friday Mr. Bobfr!

Thank you for letting Mrs. Grimes know that she needs to get smarter about running against repuke McConnell.

He will have the people believing that “he” brought ACA to the people, and when she wakes up, she’ll be asking; “what happened, when did it happened, and how did it happen?”

Stop running from, and run to Obamacare; last I heard, it’s still a good thing to save people lives @AlisonForKy,

    #TraitorSnowden exposed …

“More important is a new interview with Oleg Kalugin, who is a good deal more honest than Vladimir Putin. Titled “Snowden is cooperating with Russian intelligence,” this is an important development, given Kalugin’s position. He is something of a legend in espionage circles, since he was the youngest general in the KGB at the height of the Cold War, heading up the foreign counterintelligence office of the KGB’s elite First Chief Directorate, its overseas espionage arm. As such, Kalugin was responsible for overseeing the recruitment of foreigners working in the intelligence business…in other words, people just like Edward Snowden. Kalugin’s exploits working against U.S. intelligence are the stuff of exciting late-night spy stories, and you can read about some of them in his memoir, which I recommend (if you read Russian, that version is even better).”

Bob, I would love to see this statement by Kalugin shoved down the throat of every fool who still calls Snowden a hero and is grateful for his “whistle blowing.” There are still too many otherwise intelligent people who romanticize this nasty little traitor and think he’s been unfairly treated.

    Interesting Photo….

many of the game changers in the photo…Brady…Casey…Rendell….Schwartz… .Margoilis….Wolf…..
    with the caption….

    United to win on November!….

although I understand what they are trying to convey….I think that it is a mistake to have this photo without the Blk elected officials who endorsed Wolf for Governor….namely State Rep Dwight Evans….who prior to Corbett was a real power house in the state
    my daughter disagreed with me…

    wondering what others think

Pf, I guess the point here is to show that the rival candidates have put away their differences and are uniting behind Wolf. That’s fine and necessary. But none of these people can make the win happen. That’s going to be up to us–on the ground, working together in all our diversity, to get voters engaged and to make sure they vote.

      • May 23, 2014 at 10:45 pm

        Indeed…

one thing I can say is the Wolf has mimicked some of PBOs campaign strategies….but one thing I have not seen is an emphasis on voter registration…. I hope that changes

Good evening TOD…..just a note of thankfulness today. As many of you have probably read, we in Oklahoma have been/ are in a severe drought. We have not had rain in months. Our crops have not had enough water to germinate, and this will be bad for people’s grocery bills. BUT today we are having blessed RAIN. Not wind, not hail, just beautiful, delicious rain. Soft, constant, blessing all it touches.
Thinking of the song…..”I Love a Rainy night” as I relax on my couch.

eBay faces investigations over massive data breach.

The UK’s information commissioner is working with European data authorities with a view to taking action against eBay over its recent data breach.

Three US states are also investigating the theft of names, email addresses and other personal data, which affected up to 145 million eBay customers.

The online marketplace has begun the process of notifying its customers about the need to reset passwords.

However some customers reported problems when attempting to do so.

EBay told the BBC that it was not aware of any technical problems with the password reset function on the site.

Russian Railways paid billions of dollars to secretive private companies

In the world’s biggest country, railways are still a route to riches. With nearly 1 billion passengers a year and $42 billion in annual sales, the state company Russian Railways is a giant commercial opportunity.

At its head is Vladimir Yakunin, an old friend and long-standing ally of President Vladimir Putin. He oversees a company that strikes international deals, issues bonds to major investors and plans hugely expensive new high-speed lines. By many measures, Russian Railways is a standard corporate colossus.

But a Reuters investigation has uncovered another side to the state-owned company: Under Yakunin, it has paid billions of dollars to private contractors that disguise their ultimate owners and have little or no presence at their registered headquarters.

A Reuters study of tenders held by Russian Railways also identified contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars granted to companies that ostensibly bid as rivals but appear to be closely related.
