I am truly beside myself with delight and excitement, DF! Imagine how much fun and what a thrill it will be for Cousin Henry and the others to be receiving a steady stream of fabulous collectibles from the USA, maybe from even before he knew he was related to PBO!?

Part of my work day today was spent in a room with several inspirational thoughts on display. Then there was this – a huge poster in a corner featuring the face of #43 and the prominent title ‘BUSH ADMITS I’M NOT ONE OF THE GREAT LINGUISTS’. The poster proceeded to share example after example of evidence to support Bush’s admission. Here are a few I copied, because I was so bemused by them and the fact they were uttered by ‘a president’!

    – I confirmed to the prime minister that America appreciates our friendship.
    – You teach your child to read, and he or her will be able to pass the literacy test.
    – It’s clearly a budget. It’s got a lot of numbers in it.
    – It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas.
    – Anyway, I’m so thankful and gracious – I’m gracious that my brother Jeb is concerned about the hemisphere as well.
    – Let me put it to you this way. I am not a revengeful person.

And one of my favourites! – One of the greatest things about books is sometimes there are fantastic pictures.

If I ever go back there to work again, I’ll have to copy a few more (or photograph it with my cell phone like the techies do). They were embarrassingly funny; if I hadn’t ‘met’ the man myself I would have wondered if they were mostly all made up.

Thanks Alycee for your tweet and for posting it at TOD! Vincent Harding was a Master Teacher! He is one of the historians who had a tremendous influence on me! I’ve read most of his writings, including his marvelous collection of essays entitled “Hope and History,” which I highly recommend to everyone. By the way, his Bio should have also pointed out that he taught history and was Chairman of the Department of History and Sociology at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. He was also the director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Center and the coordinator of the 1968 nationally televised CBS’ “Black Heritage” series. In 1969 he confounded, and was the first Director, of the Institute of the Black World (IBW). IBW brought together leading Black Scholars, from the U.S., the Caribbean, Africa and Europe, to examine crucial problems facing people of African descent. Vincent Harding was not only a Civil rights Activist, but he was also a brilliant writer, a remarkable scholar, and a deeply spiritual person. I feel blessed to have been able to attend and listen to some of his penetrating and challenging lectures! May He Rest In Peace!

Mr. Harding’s death is a painful reminder to me to take opportunities when they are presented for tomorrow isn’t promised. He was the guest speaker on May 5th at Pendle Hill’s First Monday’s Series. As I wasn’t feeling so well, I didn’t attend. I figured that since he was in residence at Pendle Hill while writing his autobiography, I’d have other opportunities; but, tomorrow isn’t promised…

Do you remember when POTUS walked to Interior and talked to people? One of the first couples he met were there to visit Arlington. I could hear him say his Grandfather was buried the Hawaii a National Cemetery. I was wondering if it was in that old volcano is laid out as a memorial. But maybe the cemetery is separate. Just wondering.

Great Song! I am glad you dedicated to the President. Thanks also, JOB, for that marvelous and touching poem honoring those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of our country. I hope one of these days you will publish your poetry to share with the rest of the world.

It’s our Solemn Responsibility to DO SO, for our President and humanity

    • May 27, 2014 at 1:59 am

Had to post this, as well, before departing …

“Today we have once again evaluated the number of Russian troops at our borders. Their grouping has really diminished.

In particular, in the eastern regions of Ukraine more than 11,000 Russian personnel are deployed and about 1,500 pieces of military equipment.

This still isn’t a reason to talk about peace and stability. Troops can return in a few days, their transfer to the border with Ukraine is already well practiced. And the regular supply of weapons to our terrorists and to new subdivisions of mercenaries from Russia goes at full speed.

But this is a small gap in a quiet war with Moscow for the first time in many weeks. We’ll learn to appreciate small successes, bringing nearer a time for big ones.”

More ‘good’ and ‘bad’ news in the tweet from a proven reliable source:

Now that’s the epitome of responsible citizenship! We must learn from these examples! Thanks Bob for sharing this and for all of your hard work to keep us informed! You are another inspiring example of what it means to be a serious and caring citizen of the world.

Okay, I’m outta here. An interesting line, from the quote in this tweet: “I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else.” It would be a nice hope, and yet “no man is an island.”

  27. May 27, 2014 at 4:57 am

    President Obama is indeed indefatigable.

No complaints in TODville about how tired you are. (Just kidding, only one in a million could do what PBO does and be awake for it all.)

If traveling to Afghanistan to meet our troops and Karsai (the corrupt coward who declined to meet with PBO) and then spending yesterday honoring our fallen troops were not enough, he will reverse 20 years of inaction by previous Presidents today:

WASHINGTON — President Obama is expected to announce on Monday an Environmental Protection Agency regulation to cut carbon pollution from the nation’s fleet of 600 coal-fired power plants, in a speech that government analysts in Beijing, Brussels and beyond will scrutinize to determine how serious the president is about fighting global warming.

See Jovie’s post with @NYTimes tweet, and especially Mighty Pamela’s response.

The YouTube video by @SolarRoadways’ Scott Brusaw has been up a week, and has over 5 million views.

It’s a bit too corny for my taste, but I love the idea of burying Koch Industries with an explosion of solar construction. The video says that if every road in the US were converted to #SolarRoadways, we’d generate three times as much energy than we currently consume. Plus, no more shoveling snow, and no more ice-storm created power line hazards.

    From Wikipedia:
FHWA’s [Federal Highway Administration’s] role in the Federal-aid Highway Program is to oversee federal funds used for constructing and maintaining the National Highway System (primarily Interstate Highways, U.S. Routes and most State Routes). This funding mostly comes from the federal gasoline tax and mostly goes to state departments of transportation FHWA oversees projects using these funds to ensure that federal requirements for project eligibility, contract administration and construction standards are adhered to.

    Go, Anthony Foxx!

And then on Wednesday, he kicks off a very hectic schedule with a commencement address at West Point focusing on Foreign Policy before he embarks to Europe to pay tribute to the masses of military heroes who launched and engaged in the turning point of WWII, D-Day at Omaha Beach 70 years ago.

    A reminder from the article:
“‘The United States and I don’t have the luxury of choosing just one problem at a time,’ he said during a recent swing through Asia.

On that same trip, Obama hit back at the “weak president” charges, accusing Republicans who hurl that epithet at him of seeing “the use of force as the definitive answer” to many problems.

‘You would think, given that we’ve just gone through a decade of war, that that assumption would be subject to some questioning,’ the president said.”
