While we’re waiting for the President.
    ****************************************************************************
A very prestigious cardiologist died and was given a very elaborate funeral
by the hospital he worked for most of his life…. A huge heart… covered in
flowers stood behind the casket during the service as all the doctors from
the hospital sat in awe. Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the
casket rolled inside. The heart then closed, sealing the doctor in the
    beautiful heart forever.

At that point, one of the mourners just -burst- into laughter. When all
eyes stared at him, he said, ‘I am so sorry, I was just thinking of my own funeral…

    I’m a gynecologist.

    The proctologist fainted.

I just saw where Bone Finger Jan Brewer is using the Mike Pence line that they are ‘saving’ their states’ health care systems from Obamacare by taking the Medicaid money.

Can’t we learn how to be this shrewd selling our truth when they are so brilliant at selling their lies?

    • 22 EricFive
      May 27, 2014 at 3:26 pm

Dems could learn a lot from President Romney about effective messaging. Superior messaging also helped the gop hold onto Virginia. “Winning” a newscycle does not equal winning an election. If you think Mike Pence spouting nonsense to justify his capitulating his battle against Obamacare is some kind of win for the gop, I question your score keeping. When dems vote dems win elections.

      • 23 57andfemale
        May 27, 2014 at 3:46 pm

I started a long-winded explanation and decided not to hit ‘send’. You and I talk past each other even though we both have our country’s best interests at heart. So you get the last word.

        • 24 EricFive
          May 27, 2014 at 4:13 pm

I just see a lot of dems have a defeatist, overly critical (of the party) mindset. The GOP protect the interrsts of the wealthy and corporations (which own and control the media we rely on for information). This gives the gop certain built in advantages. They are not geniuses and I admit your tendency to portray them as such is a bit unsettling. Had a democrat gone back on his word as Pence has, he would be accused of caving and rightfully so. That jibberish he is spouting is only a winning message if no follow up questions are allowed.

I just see us losing the ‘conventional wisdom’ battle and I don’t like to see us dismissive of that. We HAVE to find a way to re-write RWNJ narratives. It’s not up to PBO who is a brilliant messenger – it’s the party that has to do that and they still play by 20 year old rules that no longer work.

You see me as defeatist when I’m really trying to find some answers on how we can be more effective. I could just as easily say that dismissing the effects of Republican lies and identifying the complicit media as the problem and considering that enough – is in its own way defeatist.

We’re not winning the conventional wisdom war, and in order to return this nation to sanity, our ‘truths’ have to become conventional wisdom again. Goodness, ‘flat earth’ is no longer hyperbole. ‘Religious freedom’ is trumping American community. We can’t fix crumbling bridges, and yet many Americans believe unions are to blame and that the ‘death tax’ will take their bachelor brother’s black and white TV. Personal responsibility is now anathema to ‘freedom’. And we think the answers to any and all slights is at the end of a gun. This is dangerous chaos.

And yet our side doesn’t see enough of a threat to bother to vote in sufficient numbers.Starting 30+ years ago, the GOP found ways to get their people to the polls. We can’t just blame the media when I see our representatives blowing their media opportunities.

I want us to WIN. I want us back in charge of school districts and state houses. It’s not enough to win the WH – GOP will go to any lengths to get power and destroy this country in the process. We have to get back into the hearts and minds of people who can’t take the time that we at TOD take to forage out the truth. We have to find a way touch them on a visceral level and motivate them to vote. The DNC has simply not done enough to get through to them. We need to view this institutionally, and plan for decades down the road. PBO will be out of office in 2016. At the very least, the Dems on the tv should learn how to NOT be talked over, how to NOT waste time saying the GOP means well, yada yada. They DO have time on the TV – the party should make sure they make optimum use of that time.
5 M Americans are without health care because of the GOP. Tens of thousands of people will die because of their heartlessness. Yet Brewer/Pence/Scott turn it around and say they’re going to cure the failings of Obamacare by using the Medicaid money in intelligent ways. McConnell is promising Kentuckyians that they will get to keep their great KyNet and get rid of evil Obamacare. And they say it with passion, with conviction, and it’s a lie. A brilliant lie that confuses enough voters. I just want the Good Guys to be that shrewd and thereby more effective.

              May 27, 2014 at 5:49 pm

I think our disagreement lies in the fact that I view the msm (especially the Washington village idiots) as being the propaganda arm of the GOP. I mean this literally. The GOP tells the msm what the conventional wisdom is, and the msm dutifully reports it as fact. Due to this view, I don’t think the setting of the CW is open to dem messaging. The media is corrupt and dems must work outside the msm echo chamber to reach the people. I don’t think you are defeatist. I just think you have a lot more faith in the msm than is justified. Dems are by no means perfect, but it seems unfair to blast dem’s messaging abilities within the corrupt and partisan media landscape dems are forced to “compete”.

Ultimately, it was always going to be the hospitals in these states that would exert pressure on these evil GOP governors. Insurance companies are joining the Exchanges – ACA is a huge success. ACA is in truth one of the most successful rollouts of a major initiative in American history – something you rarely hear the Democrats say.

I was still ‘impressed’ that the evil GOP could spin it to make themselves look like heroes. They are diabolically brilliant at crafting their lies.

Very clear, concise statement about the plan going forward in Afghanistan. This is an important moment, defining the success of President Obama’s policy in Afghanistan, thanks to the hard work and sacrifices of American troops and their families. It is a hopeful moment when at last we see American involvement in this war drawing to a close.

    The Conservative Movement Virus

    By Booman

    ——————————

The Conservative Movement has captured the Republican Party and they aren’t going to change just because the party needs to change if it wants to win. This is an anti-intellectual movement based in an anti-intellectual form of religion, that has been coupled with a paranoid and xenophobic strain of embittered nihilism. It’s greatest crime is that it has been able to take advantage of on-team solidarity to convince a lot of formerly moderate and reasonable people to abandon reality-based thinking.
    .
    .
This political weaponization of stupidity is at the core of the Conservative Movement. Until recently, the Republican Party was an uneasy marriage between the monied classes and the dumb, but now the dumb are leading the dumb, and the monied classes are the ones demonstrating on-team loyalty. They don’t care about school prayer or abortion or gay marriage, but they dare not buck the Conservative Movement. To some degree, after ingesting so much right-wing media, even the monied classes may come to devalue science and take on more socially conservative views.

I am listening to Richard Engle and his Tone is different from the comments made here thus far.

    Is he doing a 180?

    • 43 hopefruit2
      May 27, 2014 at 3:18 pm

Is his tone difficult from the comments here, or from the comments that he himself tweeted prior to PBO’s speech? If he has done a 180 from what he tweeted previously, it’s because he really has no choice at this point. The President just spoke and it’s extremely difficult to spin the facts of what he said in that speech.

      • 44 Nena20409
        May 27, 2014 at 3:27 pm

He was more of a real reporter. He Reported on what POTUS said. Gave Context and it was nuanced not Emoprog diatribe. So I am sort of evading your question for I have not read all his tweets on this matter. I was going by comments previously made here. Hence, my comments up thread.

He also added that POTUS’ comments were inline with what he had always said about Afghanistan.

        • 45 hopefruit2
          May 27, 2014 at 3:29 pm

Okay, so it appears that his comments have changed from his earlier tweet prior to PBO’s speech, which basically said that PBO was continuing the war until 2016, and for which people pushed-back strongly. :) :) Glad to see he has come around – as I said, after PBO’s statement, it’s really hard to spin.

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/michael-guest-constitutional-clayton-kelly-video-other-aware

That video, and the inclusion of the image of Cochran’s wife, Rose, resulted in the arrest of Kelly and three other men in relation to Kelly planning to go and take Rose Cochran’s image at the nursing home where she has been bedridden. All men face felony charges. Kelly supported Cochran’s primary opponent, state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R).

“There is definitely a potential that others could be charged in this matter, but at this point I’m being very careful on making comments about possible further arrests,” Guest said according to The Clarion-Ledger.

“It is clear there were individuals other than those charged who were aware a video was being made and would be published as part of an ongoing Senate campaign,” Guest continued. “The crime is not a video hit piece. The crime is in going into the room of Rose Cochran and taking photos. Who knew what and when they knew it, that is irrelevant as far as [the investigation] is concerned.”

Terrorist Base Near Luhansk Destroyed By Missile and Bombing Raid
Posted on May 27, 2014 by chornajuravka

The main terrorist training base in Luhansk Oblast, a training center organized by the Russian security services near Yaseny village a few hundred meters from the Russian border, has been destroyed.

    clip

In the journalist’s opinion, the unprecedented voter turnout in the recent elections has legitimized the Ukrainian government and given a free hand.

“Today at 5.00 AM a missile and bombing attack has been directed at the Yaseny camp by fighter bombers. The attack results are being reconfirmed. In any circumstance, this is a good signal – serving terrorists in Ukraine is becoming a very dangerous and unprofitable business. As informed by Censor.Net, Oleksandr Turchynov, Acting Supreme Commander-in-Chief, has ordered the General Staff and Military Air Force of Ukraine to level attacks at all identified and unidentified terrorist units in the area of the anti-terrorist operation,” he stressed.

UNIAN reported earlier that in Luhansk Oblast the terrorist training camp has been destroyed as a result of an airstrike. The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arseniy Avakov informed about this on his Facebook page: “A terrorist training camp in Yaseny village, Luhansk Oblast, has been destroyed by the airstrike,” he wrote.

I listened to the President’s statement. It was clear, direct, reasonable, and did what he has said all along he was going to do. I don’t know why the “pundits” act as if he says the exact opposite of what he does…….except they do not listen. They make up their minds before he speaks, and do not want the facts to interfere with their preconceived ideas.

I’m noticing a big difference between the end of the Iraq war and this one. This ending is gradual and orderly. We are actually leaving Afghanistan safer and better than before we went in. Iraq was left in a mess. PBO obviously planned this exit, not GWB…..who never actually planned anything, just “followed his gut which gave him answers.” Of course, Afghanistan was the only place we should have entered, and that only to get bin Laden. Which, PBO would have done with great dispatch.

There’s going to be a number of people saying we should get every American out of Afghanistan by end of 2014.
That is not so easy to do. It is not just the military, there are civilians attached to our troops and vast amounts of equipment, arms, air conditioners, etc. that need to be moved as well.
The President’s plan is moving us toward our shared goals in a responsible manner. I think we all share the goal of no more fatalities and an end to the war.

I read the comments on the NY Times website and was disappointed to see that most of the comments were critical and very cynical, Bob
        .
My guess is that our withdrawal was delayed by the shutdown of the Pakistani roads we use to resuppy and to withdraw—the roads leading to the khyber Pass. ….anybody remember that? I could be very wrong here but I think the complete end of the USA in Afghanistan would have been sooner without that overland disruption.

    Good Afternoon TODVille,

I’ve been missing in action (here) for the past 4 days and know that I have a lot of catching up to do. But first, great thanks to Chips, NW, LL, and all those that keep us informed and keep our eyes delighted.

I just received an e-mail from WaPo with this as one of the captions: Cliven Bundy has officially left the Republican Party herd. I am trying to analyze the impact such news will have on my life, on my sleep, on me in general.

I concluded that wherever this overtly racist wacko stands IS the republican party with its offspring, the Teabaggers. I mean, really, who cares if Bundy has left the Republican Party? How can he leave what he impersonates?

Happy to be able to drop this little note, from my desk.
