PM Carpenter: Obama’s West Point Address, In Two Words

Magnificently sane.

In a few more words, Obama’s address, grounded in a mature appreciation of our limits, called for multilateralism–diplomatically whenever possible, militarily if inescapable; it called, given al Qaeda’s fragmentation and dispersal, for global “partners” to suppress it; and, in a direct shot at his Republican critics, it called for a world-involved America that leads by example at home–not through climate-change denialism, or unratified treaties, or the obscenities of a Gitmo that the propagandists and paranoids won’t close.

Because Obama’s speech was so magnificently sane, let the carping and slander begin.

CNN: Obama Outlines Foreign Policy Vision Of “Might And Right”

President Barack Obama on Wednesday outlined a foreign policy vision of “might doing right,” arguing that modern pragmatism requires both a strong military and the diplomatic tools of alliances and sanctions to exert influence and provide global leadership. He told graduating cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point that after the nation’s “long season of war and divisions about how to move forward,” they now would represent America with the duty “not only to protect our country, but to do what is right and just.” “I believe in American exceptionalism with every fiber of my being,” he said, referring to a tenet of conservative ideology.” But what makes us exceptional is not flouting international norms and the rule of law; it’s our willingness to affirm them through our actions,” Obama said in arguing that true leadership involves not only having the world’s most powerful military, but in doing the right thing.

“America must always lead on the world stage,” Obama said, and the military “always will be the backbone of that leadership,” but U.S. military action “cannot be the only — or even primary — component of our leadership in every instance.” In a sign of the sentiments of the cadets, Obama got big applause when he noted they were the first West Point graduates in more than a decade unlikely to be stationed in a war zone. Overall, Obama said, “America has rarely been stronger relative to the rest of the world,” and he contended that “those who argue otherwise — who suggest that America is in decline, or has seen its global leadership slip away — are either misreading history or engaged in partisan politics.” “The question we face — the question each of you will face — is not whether America will lead, but how we will lead, not just to secure our peace and prosperity, but also extend peace and prosperity around the globe,” Obama told the cadets.

On Wednesday, Obama reiterated his policy that the United States will used military force, “unilaterally if necessary,” when its people are threatened, its livelihood is at stake or allies are in danger, but he said the threshold was higher when global issues “do not pose a direct threat” to the nation. “In such circumstances, we should not go it alone,” he said. “Instead, we must mobilize allies and partners to take collective action. We have to broaden our tools to include diplomacy and development; sanctions, isolation; appeals to international law and — if just, necessary, and effective — multilateral military action.” Such a collective approach “is more likely to succeed, more likely to be sustained, and less likely to lead to costly mistakes,” Obama said.

Joy Reid had Michael Medved ( the film critic ) on to discuss the California shooting.

Really Joy ? Really ? She also did not correct him when he said that two thirds of gun deaths are from suicide. Really ?

I saw him say that…….he is kind of a know it all and very passive aggressive.

Oh….and he loves to remind everyone he was a ” Diplomat ”

From 2001 to 2009, he was a UNICEF Spokesperson for Youth,[9] acting as an “advocate” for children and women caught up in the ongoing crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region [10] and assisting in fundraising and addressing United Nations affiliated groups in the United States.[

n 2009 Farrow joined the Obama administration with his appointment as Special Adviser for Humanitarian and NGO Affairs in the Office of the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.[7][16][17] He was part of a team of officials recruited by veteran diplomat Richard Holbrooke,[18] for whom Farrow had previously worked as a speechwriter.[19] For the ensuing two years, Farrow was responsible for “overseeing the U.S. Government’s relationships with civil society and nongovernmental actors” in Afghanistan and Pakistan

From Sam Wong at Princeton.Edu – Dems have 67% probability of retaining the Senate: http://election.princeton.edu/2014/05/27/democrats-currently-ahead-for-senate-control-but-for-how-long/

The Most Accurate predictor of the 2012 presidential elections. He did it in June or so of 2012.

      My best part:

For now, here’s the snapshot: in an election today, Democrats would retain control of the Senate with about 67% probability. Think of the Senate in 2014 as Schroedinger’s Cat: in that closed box, it’s currently 1/3 dead*. That will change over time. We open the box on November 4th.

I really don’t understand why every bit of good news for Dems must always be presented in such a pessimistic manner. When repugs lead in a race they are preordained to win. For dems it is always presented as a perilous lead. I hate our media.

An MSNBC host appeared on Fox News tonight. No, you’re not reading this from a parallel universe where dogs walk humans, that actually happened. Joe Scarborough appeared on Megyn Kelly‘s show to plug his new book, and the interview quickly turned into a roast where Kelly got in a few barbs at Scarborough’s expense.

Scarborough complimented Kelly on his set, at which point she shot back, “There’s still a blond woman on the set interrupting you at every turn.” And, referencing one of Scarborough’s worst moments, she warned, “If you snap your fingers at me, you’d have eight fingers instead of ten.”

They also went back and forth a bit about ratings, which, let’s face it, you should expect if you’re an MSNBC host going into the lion’s den. Kelly ended the segment by saying, “You want to see more of his show, you can join his four viewers.”

This is the 2nd time he’s been on Fox. Cheater JoScar claims to be friends with Roger Ailes, O’Rielly and Rush.

His ratings are in the toilet. I would not be surprised if Roger Ailes and JoScar are on the same talking points driving the GOP agenda. Politico is part of that game. The ONLY party that has NOT woken up to the political propaganda games are the Dems.

Inspiring photos, Nerdy, and a great summary of the speech. The haters are going to hate and the know-it-alls are going to press their uninformed opinions on the rest us, but Barack Obama is still the president of the United States and he still gave a brilliant, far-reaching and history-making speech. The foreign policy of the United States is determined by the president, in consultation with Congress, always supposing the Congress is remotely function. It is not up for vote by the pundits.

Gun Safety Legislation is like Obamacare…….When asked about certain components…people are all for it …but as a comprehensive plan, not so much.

    Background checks….for it !

Mental Health issues stopping a purchase….for it !

Gun show loop hole …….for it.

All three together…..not so much !

    • 43 dotster3
      May 28, 2014 at 5:37 pm

because they have been made to believe—–by the NRA and gun buds in Congress and the media—–that any gun legislation means PBO leading a charge into their homes to snatch all their beloved guns. (or some such nutty vision)

    • 44 EricFive
      May 28, 2014 at 5:38 pm

is that true? It is not a lack of public support that killed the senate gun control bill. The senate defied popular support and sided with the NRA.

    • May 28, 2014 at 9:53 pm

I have been thinking about gun laws and Obamacare. Both show individuals like most of the components when presented separately. Our older way of legislating has been do a couple of things that do not really fix the problem. I like to call it the bandaid approach. We are used to this approach. The politicians seem to like this approach since it appeases voters as doing something but really does not fix the problem. I am not sure if it is because of the hate of big government that the GOP has pushed or if the problems are so big that the legislators just do not want to work that hard.
What I have really liked about PBO’s approach is that he has treated complex problems by bringing experts together to work out comprehensive plans to address the problem. Remember when the GOP only criticized ACA and did not seriously address solutions? Now they want to start over.
Wake up and get on the train or be left behind!
I wish the media would address this attitude.

Texas Republicans will have just one woman on their ticket for the 50 congressional, statewide and top judicial races this fall.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas), who is running for a 10th term, is the sole woman left standing after GOP voters finished the final round of elections for its nominees Tuesday.

“I would tell you I’ve had discussions with elected officials and party leaders about this very issue,” Texas GOP Chairman Steve Munisteri told the paper. “Frankly, it is a concern.

Apparently, Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Yuri Sergeyev gave Cherkin a public scolding for the totally obvious Russian forces and mercenaries operating in Ukraine. Looking forward to reviewing the UNSC video when they post it – will post it here when they do. From what I’ve read, it was intense and Amb Sergeyev was very specific about the identities and scale of Russian operatives.

Not as funny is that POTUS has done amazing events and appearances three days in a row concerning our future foreign policy and the end of our engagement in Afghanistan.
Pretty much no coverage except to argue, criticize, and disparage.

“He’s now saying he was an undercover, clandestine officer working as a highly trained spy for the United States,” Blitzer said of Snowden. “Is that true?”

“No,” Rice replied, succinctly. When asked to expand on what Snowden’s role in the U.S. government was, she said, “Edward Snowden was a contractor working for the NSA and other elements of the intelligence community. Obviously he’s accused of sharing and disclosing, illegally, some of the most sensitive information of the United States government, allegedly.”

I have to say I’m flabbergasted by how the president’s speech has been received today. I thought the pundits were lazy but I didn’t think they were that DENSE, that STUPID !!!! I am an ordinary woman. I’m NOT a journalist, nor a historian, nor a specialist in geopolitics. I don’t know everything, far from it. But as I listen to the president, I thought that he MADE PERFECT SENSE. His speech was as BALANCED, as NUANCED, as COMPLEX as the REAL WORLD IS. Barack Obama demonstrated a DEEP UNDERSTANDING of how the world is evolving, and how the United States can still exert lots of influence without exhausting itself in trying to rule everywhere.

MORAL LEADERSHIP, leadership by EXAMPLE, leadership by COORDINATION, by MOTIVATION. Leadership based on UNIVERSAL VALUES. With STILL the possibility of using military force when it’s absolutely necessary.

WHAT THE HELL do they want ?

I didn’t think those pundits were such REACTIONARY IDIOTS !

The TRUTH ? A vast majority of Beltway figures are not able to deal with the fact that it’s impossible politically, economically and fiscally for the US to control the whole world. Good grief, they’re living in the Reagan fantasy.

Or, there may be something else at play: since those guys, I realize now, have absolutely no depth of knowledge in everything else than day-to day Washington politics, they base their reaction not on the SUBSTANCE of the speech, but on their dislike of the president. Let’s not kid ourselves, for some reason they don’t like him. REALLY don’t like him. So they NEVER, EVER give him the benefit of the doubt. I can guarantee you, if somebody like Jon Huntsman had given EXACTLY THE SAME SPEECH, they would have sung his praises. And said that yes, the US has to readjust its foreign policy for the 21st century etc.

Barack Obama is asking the United States to grow up and to adjust and it’s difficult for many; those people would only follow the lead if they liked the leader.

It makes me so angry. To have a president of this CALIBER, and to not be able to realize it …

Sorry for the rant. I just hope that SOME people with more credentials will offer more intelligent analysis in the next few days…
