Bought a moto g cellphone for daughter unit’s b’day (next week). Must admit google has done a very good job of turning around motorola. At under 250 bucks, great phone and it’s selling hot dosas (google it, dammit).

Hmmmm. Should I point out that I notice this b-day present is not a ‘personal’ b’day present – more like a hubby giving a vacuum cleaner?

Secretary Shinseki’s Farewell Message to VA Employees

What the hell? Shinseki resigns and so does Jay Carney?

    • May 30, 2014 at 10:15 pm

Yeah. It was something a double-whammy. Hard to process.

      • 38 jacquelineoboomer
        May 30, 2014 at 10:51 pm

I’m sorting through it all, and I think the best way to process it is to just realize we were lucky to have some of these fine folks for as long as we did! I know one thing … nobody ever thinks of Robert Gibbs (I even forget if that was his name) any more, and people will be thinking of Jay Carney for quite some time!

    • May 30, 2014 at 10:26 pm

      Is there any explanation?

      • May 30, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Jay desperately wants to spend more time with his family. He’s resigning now so he can count on a lot of time with his young children this summer. After that, he’ll look at some of his options. I imagine he’ll have a lot of good choices presented to him.

      • May 30, 2014 at 10:31 pm

Hi Jackie, Jay Carney just wants to spend more time with his family:

Sec Shinseki offered his resignation, and PBO accepted.

        • May 30, 2014 at 10:55 pm

More time with family is code for asked to leave. I am hoping that was not it. I think Shinseki’s resignation is very unfortunate. Thanks for the info.

          • May 30, 2014 at 10:59 pm

No, in this case, Jay really felt he was seeing his children’s childhood pass him by. PBO was effusive and genuine when praising Jay and said Jay had become one of his closest friends. You have to remember that before becoming WH Press Secretary, he was press & communication for VP Biden. So he’s served in this capacity in the WH for over 5 years. That’s a long time for anyone to commit to working in the WH.

Thank you LP for the excellent toons!

I would place bets that if there ever is another GOP President he (would only be a white he) will dissolve the WHPC.

So wish PBO would walk in one day & say – “your dismissed”. Who started the story that the press must ALWAYS be with the President??

      • 64 jacquelineoboomer
        May 31, 2014 at 12:20 am

Not sure that will happen, 99ts, although I wish this current crop could be disbanded now. As I’m sure you know, the press corps was and is needed to relay the President’s messages to the nation, when he can’t do it personally. Also, televised briefings are one of the few times Americans get to see the President speak live (like in the early days of TV when President Kennedy would do pressers, which I’d rush home to see when I was in high school, along with all my friends!). The correspondents also are supposed to ask questions of interest to the people, and then relay the administration’s response back to our citizens. It should be seen by them as both an honor and privilege. After all, today, they are supposed to be the eyes and ears of 300 million people and those beyond our borders.

I shudder when I think of the stories from President Lincoln’s time (and for other presidents, of course) when citizens could just go to the White House and be received … with their concerns or causes or “suggestions.” (What an unbelievable part of the day that must have been!)

While we know the press is supposed to be there to get the word out to Americans and others around the globe directly from the administration, this group has another – shall we say “unique” – agenda. Let’s hope we all live long enough to see that change back.

There. I’ve managed to include the names of my three favorite Presidents in one comment!

          May 31, 2014 at 4:21 am

I have come to like the “west wing week” – not sure if this existed before PBO – but to me that relays the President’s message better than those who simply lie about the message and ask gotcha questions.

But I appreciate your explanations as I really know little of the why of this gaggle. No doubt it can’t be dissolved but I will be interested in the future if it can be changed – I really don’t see the need for so many to be doing the reporting – but no doubt any removed would scream like scalded cats.

I shall see the US administrations (those that I live to see) very differently after the age of Obama – I am a little jealous that the young had him so early in their lives – but then again – they missed one of your favorites.

I feel sad about Sec. Shinseki’s resignation. I trust Pres Obama and know that both of them are taking action in the way that is best for the country. I’m also so glad to read your tweets about the veterans approval of the Sec. I hope they will let the GOP know they are not off the hook and to hammer that the problem is VA health is underfunded. Also glad to see your picture of Pres Obama and Sec Shinseki walking together today. I’m sure POTUS will have some changes made to the system that will help it be more efficient. Still feel sad, but looking at it the best I can.

Also looking for good news and finding lots as usual. I usually ignore HuffPo, but there are some people who write for them that I really respect and don’t seem to find anywhere else. I’m going to check the opinion columns on the left side more regularly.

You’re so right – all this sad news was a bit of an onslaught after being completely blind to the days events. But I knew if I came here, I’d get the honest scoop – and I have. It’s a sad scoop, but an honest one. If not for TOD, I’d be completely ignorant of current events!

  38. May 31, 2014 at 1:43 am

I plan to republish my comments below at least 2 more times doing the daylight hours:

The msm including beltway, WHPC, CNN, CSPANWJ (Steve Scully, Greta Brawner) MSNBC (Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, Chris Jansing, Chris Matthews, That early morning fool) ABC; presents a clear and present danger to the future growth of America.

Our failure to take full advantage of the social media’s and any other forms of communications (e.g. fax, phone, letter, etc.) to unmercifully attack these media Republican/Teabagger shills, we in essence surrender out right to complain.

IMO, the difference between an excuse Vs. a reason is defined by one word; Effort. If your honest with yourself, you know when you made up an excuse, it’s because you did not put forth an effort to deal with the issue at hand.

Conversely, when you put forth an effort to deal with the issue at hand, even though it may not have worked out, you have a reason why, you have gain knowledge and understanding as to why.

I say all of this to encourage you to not make excuses as to why you can’t go after this destructive media that for the most part is detrimental for the future growth of America.
