Bergdahl in Tweets

Well, the Right has lost its mind. The recovery of a POW is now seen as a betrayal of the nation. Some tweets on the subject.

There’s a malignancy stalking our land, all because Barack Obama is President, twice. Our job in November is to send it back under its rock.

Chat on.

Centuries from now, a large swath of the West Antarctic ice sheet is likely to be gone, its hundreds of trillions of tons of ice melted, causing a four-foot rise in already swollen seas. Scientists reported last week that the scenario may be inevitable, with new research concluding that some giant glaciers had passed the point of no return, possibly setting off a chain reaction that could doom the rest of the ice sheet.

For many, the research signaled that changes in the earth’s climate have already reached a tipping point, even if global warming halted immediately.
“We as people see it as closing doors and limiting our future choices,” said Richard Alley, a professor of geosciences at Pennsylvania State University. “Most of us personally like to keep those choices open.”

But these glaciers are just the latest signs that the thawing of earth’s icy regions is accelerating. While some glaciers are holding steady or even growing slightly, most are shrinking, and scientists believe they will continue to melt until greenhouse gas emissions are reined in. “It’s possibly the best evidence of real global impact of warming,” said Theodore A. Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center…….

Huge thanks LL, it’s true – they have lost their minds.

I’m looking on this with disgust. Will probably have more to say in an essay for tomorrow.

They’re deranged from their hate, the whole friggin’ lot of them.

          June 1, 2014 at 7:39 pm

Yes, they are deranged and very close to out-of-control.
We answer their insanities with reason; ie–The military wasn’t concerned about Bowe’s patriotism. He was promoted twice. As if that matters to haters.

I don’t think the problem is Bowe Bergdahl or the Guantanamo releases.
Or the Open carry at Home Depot.
(There’s a smart tweet that says if the men and women with assault rifles were black do we not all think there would be a completely different attitude about Open Carry?)

Maybe I am over-reacting but it seems to me that the hate and rage is escalating on one side while the other side is appealing to logic and reason. What is different now from even a year ago is that people use the words hate and President Obama in the same sentence in public and on MSNBC. “People hate The President,” is said as though that is an acceptable thing to say.

It is not acceptable to make hating and talking about that hate an everyday matter. It is wrong and it should set off alarm bells.

I don’t recall this level of malice towards George Bush expressed on televison. Sure, contempt and scorn. Not dangerous hatred.
Tell me if I am nuts, please.

The next episode of “Cosmos” will make the anti-science crowd’s heads explode.

For 11 episodes now, the groundbreaking Fox and National Geographic Channel series Cosmos has been exploring the universe, outraging creationists, and giving science teachers across the nation something to show in class every Monday. In the process, the show has been drawing more than 3 million viewers every Sunday night, a respectable number for a science-focused show that is, after all, a major departure from what prime-time audiences are used to…..

….Courtesy of National Geographic, above is a clip from the new episode, which should have climate deniers fulminating. In it, host Neil deGrasse Tyson uses the analogy of walking a dog on the beach to helpfully explain the difference between climate and weather (pay attention, Donald Trump) and to outline why, no matter how cold you were in January, that’s no argument against global warming.

We’ve seen the rest of the episode already, and won’t spill the beans. But suffice it to say that it contains some powerful refutations of a number of other global warming denier talking points, as well as some ingenious sequences that explain the planetary-scale significance of climate change. It also contains some in situ reporting on the impacts of climate change, straight from the imperiled Arctic……

In a statement, Sen. Sanders described what the Restoring Veterans’ Trust Act of 2014 would do, “It would give the VA authority to immediately remove senior executives based on poor job performance while preventing wholesale political firings. It would provide veterans who can’t get timely appointments with VA doctors the option of going to community health centers, military hospitals or private doctors. It would authorize VA to lease 27 new health facilities in 18 states. It would authorize emergency funding to hire new doctors, nurses and other providers in order to address system-wide health care provider shortages and to take other steps necessary to ensure timely access to care. To address primary care doctor shortage for the long-term, the bill would authorize the National Health Service Corps to award scholarships to medical school students and to forgive college loans for doctors and nurses who go to work at the VA.

Sanders has been paying attention on this subject – good for him! He has incorporated the suggestion I’ve been seeing lately on twitter [forgive college loans for doctors and nurses who go to work at the VA.] Now if only his colleagues will do the right thing!

For five years, the coal industry and its fossil-fueled allies in the Republican Party have accused the Obama Administration of waging a war on coal. They claim the administration’s new plan to limit carbon emissions at existing power plants is really about carbon emissions at existing coal plants. They see the carbon rules that the president will announce tomorrow, like his previous rules limiting mercury, smog, and coal ash, as a thinly disguised effort to make coal power uneconomical. They’re right, of course……

Obamaworld likes to portray its efforts to clean up power plants as a war on pollution in general, not a war on coal in particular, but it just so happens that coal spews most of the pollution from power plants. It’s America’s leading contributor to global warming, producing three-fourths of our carbon emissions from electricity, even though it generates just over one third of our electricity. It’s also the dominant source of mercury and other toxics that foul our air and damage our health. It’s filthy stuff. When Obama said Saturday that his carbon rules will prevent 100,000 asthma attacks in Year One, he wasn’t describing the health benefits of emitting less carbon dioxide; he was describing the health benefits of burning less coal……

….In fact, after a huge boost from the Obama stimulus bill, wind and solar plants are getting cheap, too, and they’re increasingly viable replacements for coal, providing 95 percent of the new capacity added in the first quarter of 2014. An Oklahoma utility that is shutting down three coal plants recently requested bids for 200 megawatts of wind power; the bids came in so low that the utility purchased 600 megawatts. In Kentucky, coal-friendly legislators have introduced a bill to end a requirement that utilities purchase the lowest-cost power; rock-bottom prices used to be coal’s trump card, but no more….

I am outside on my patio on this beautiful evening reading posts on TOD. I skipped ahead to post this to help my sanity. I live in a nice mobile home court. My neighbors four year old came out of the house and started screaming ISABEL every few seconds at the top of her lungs. I am sure she is on the other side of the park with her friends she was playing with a few minutes prior. They live on the other side of the loop. Finally after screaming uninterrupted for a half hour she gets called into the house. “Phew! I think maybe it will stop now!” Of course not. She comes back out screaming even louder then her Dad comes out joining her in screaming the sisters name. Guess I know where the idea of just screaming instead of going to look for her comes from!

      June 1, 2014 at 9:22 pm

Hopefully the screamers have already stopped (I confess that my mental picture of this did make me chuckle; them yelling and Isabel having fun. I’m betting Isabel heard them just fine but wasn’t ready to come home yet.)

    http://immasmartypants.blogspot.com/2014/06/passing-on-clean-slate.html

Over the last few years, attempts to bring together Afghanistan and the Taliban to negotiate towards a stable government have been underway, but have moved forward in fits and starts. Over that time, a successful prisoner exchange between the U.S. and the Taliban has been seen as an opening statement of trust for the negotiations to begin in earnest. I believe that is what happened yesterday with the release of Sergeant Bergdahl in exchange for the 5 detainees at Guantanamo. Notice how President Obama’s statement yesterday echos what VP Biden said two years ago.
This week the United States renewed its commitment to the Afghan people and made clear that we will continue to support them as they chart their own future. The United States also remains committed to supporting an Afghan-led reconciliation process as the surest way to achieve a stable, secure, sovereign, and unified Afghanistan. While we are mindful of the challenges, it is our hope Sergeant Bergdahl’s recovery could potentially open the door for broader discussions among Afghans about the future of their country by building confidence that it is possible for all sides to find common ground.
So this wasn’t just a prisoner exchange. It was perhaps the opening step in the reconciliation process between the Afghan government and the Taliban. As such, it was also one more step in this President’s efforts to fix the mess that was left to him by his predecessor and take us “off a permanent war footing.”

As Bob so often says, TrustBarack.

    • June 1, 2014 at 9:11 pm

      #TrustBarack in_deed, df!!

And, yes, the exchange, while an absolutely necessary act by our CIC to recover a POW and assure our Armed Forces that they will never be ‘left behind and forgotten,’ is also a necessary act of reconciliation between the Afghan elected government and the Taliban.

We will soon witness the completion of Presidential Elections in Afghanistan. It is my hope that it will be even more peaceful than the first round, because the Taliban will be less disruptive than even during the first round of the election process.

My offering is one that I speak out into the universe praying that the offering of humble words of compassion will surround them during the path to healing with their son and with each other. No one knows the pain that they will need to fully heal. So, Lord, I have no other hope and words of supplications other than of: to let my actions daily be to ask for a peace, quiet sweet gentle spirits to surround them, and a strength that can only come from a mighty compassionate Force to hug tightly the son, the brother, the grandson, and the friend who has endured all of these years under circumstances without all of them.

Through all of the noise, give him gentle notes to a song that will be born out of a special chosen one by you, oh Lord to forever be a salve to soothe this our soldier who is coming home, coming home, coming home to a mother and father who will wait just a few more moments. Place the tears of his precious mother and father in a very special jar that you have prepared for this family to cherish for life.

And Lord, continue to give PBO, VPBiden, Sec., Hagel, Sec. Kerry, Security Advisor, Dr. Susan Rice, and all of the nurses, doctors, pilots and crew members who made it all happen, Bless them. The life and the quality of that life is worth every ounce of our compassion. We humbly thank our President whom wisdom is granted in full measure each day.

So we thank the graces of the sacred angels for this home arrival. To our great Compassionate CIC, thank you for all your collective efforts brought back home to this nation and to these parents.

    We give thanks.

Very important. Thank you, nath for all that you do in this beautiful TOD family. I have always deeply respected Dr. Barber and I pray daily for him and his dedicated team who are spreading the work. I have always tried to explain to some of my friend about the educational accomplishments of our black father, uncles, aunts, who were accomplished men and women, but when they would walked down the street they would have to tip their hat and move off of the sidewalk to allow the white person to pass. And guess who did not have the education and degrees? You know it.

This is a deep and long history that is again raising up its ugly, vile head to try to stop another generation of people from exercising fair and justice in this nation. But the ground is moving from under these ugly workers feet. The time has come where in a few years, a POTUS is going to stop and take a last look after his/her second inaugural speech and say as our 44th President had the wisdom to stop and say,” Wait, I want to take a last look at this, because I will not see this again.” Of course, we know he was talking about his last inaugural.

I probably will not be around, but I am praying that I will be; and also praying that I will be able, by the goodness of the graces of God be able to see, hear, and able to have the mobility to get up and see the masses of people who will have brought a brown President to that same site. And most of all there will be a sea of brown, black, white, yellow, and tons of biracial citizens waving their flags as they bring their hands together with a thunderous voice of “We Are One,” as Beyoncé gloriously yelled out after beautifully singing America at the pre-inaugural concert for President-Elect, Barack Obama, Jan. 2009. Now that will be the results of the seed planting of goodness from so many generations before us, and especially from our work in 2008 and again in 2012. This will happen. My peace is here or not; I pray my great nieces will say, ” Auntie said it would happen, if we worked together now.” Change Can Happen in a good way. Just keep working and keep faithful to bring it about.”

Thanks to Chips, LL, Nerdy W., Amk, Df, Vc, and prettyfoot, Jacqueline ‘O, Carol Mae, MightyPamela, Dudette, Donna, Tally, Zizi, and our faithful, beloved, and dedicated Bobfr for making every day a great week here at TOD. This is another week to remember.

Our beloved and brilliant Chips is our love. Chips, you are the most brilliant, gracious, strong and firm about how you work so hard at your blog and place of supporting and caring so much for PBO presidency and work as our 44th President. You give us so much. If you could only see the moments of joy you bring to those of us who just need a little lift for the day, and the plain truth about our president that is presented and delivered with pure class; Danny would probably have to find a doctor and get you some calm pills to keep you from shouting through out the house 24/7. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{ Love you so much, our beautiful sweet soul. I believe President Obama has said Abraham Lincoln is his favorite President. No doubt he knows, not to mention epitomizes, the inner strength behind this quote:

“If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business. I do the very best I know how – the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what’s said against me won’t amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference.”

Oh, Dudette, I am crying so hard. What great one that young man did with Whitney’s beautiful song. The beautiful faces, hand motions, and the soulfulness of their singing was just so moving. That is what it is all about when we continue to keep keeping PBO and others back on this journey. The children will always lift up my heart like this moment.

The young man directing reminded me of myself when I taught Performing Arts. Those are special moments. This reminds me of a quote that I have frame in my music/library room: “Words are the pen of the heart, but music is the pen of the soul.” Sheur Zalman.

These young people will make this a better world I pray; because PBO and TOD Family have touched the hem of humanity to calm the painfulness that nations have been carrying for years trying to get that healing.
