White House: Presidential Proclamation — Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Pride Month, 2014

****

LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER PRIDE MONTH, 2014

- – – – – – -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

As progress spreads from State to State, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect — our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, we celebrate victories that have affirmed freedom and fairness, and we recommit ourselves to completing the work that remains.

Last year, supporters of equality celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, a ruling which, at long last, gave loving, committed families the respect and legal protections they deserve. In keeping with this decision, my Administration is extending family and spousal benefits — from immigration benefits to military family benefits — to legally married same-sex couples.

BmjyA2MIQAAzCJm.jpg-large

My Administration proudly stands alongside all those who fight for LGBT rights. Here at home, we have strengthened laws against violence toward LGBT Americans, taken action to prevent bullying and harassment, and prohibited discrimination in housing and hospitals. Despite this progress, LGBT workers in too many States can be fired just because of their sexual orientation or gender identity; I continue to call on the Congress to correct this injustice by passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. And in the years ahead, we will remain dedicated to addressing health disparities within the LGBT community by implementing the Affordable Care Act and the National HIV/AIDS Strategy — which focuses on improving care while decreasing HIV transmission rates among communities most at risk.

Our commitment to advancing equality for the LGBT community extends far beyond our borders. In many places around the globe, LGBT people face persecution, arrest, or even state-sponsored execution. This is unacceptable. The United States calls on every nation to join us in defending the universal human rights of our LGBT brothers and sisters.

This month, as we mark 45 years since the patrons of the Stonewall Inn defied an unjust policy and awakened a nascent movement, let us honor every brave leader who stood up, sat in, and came out, as well as the allies who supported them along the way. Following their example, let each of us speak for tolerance, justice, and dignity — because if hearts and minds continue to change over time, laws will too.

tumblr_mp0kztgmZo1qznmazo1_500

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2014 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.

BARACK OBAMA

Wow. I was watching the Video of Dr Angelou in NC 2008 Rally that I had no clue that a new thread was in progress. Wow. GLADD No POTUS has done more for a segment of US Community as president Obama has and continues to do going FORWARD!

When will this group provide this POTUS with an award? Or will they double down and give one now to Bill Clinton, yet again?

“I think it’s a matter of us as Americans not getting lost in the, I think, troubling optics of the White House ceremony,” Williams said during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace. “The clear principle is we don’t leave soldiers behind. And at the moment, I think what’s necessary here, I’m reminded this Sunday morning of the story of the prodigal son. That you don’t make judgments as you have the opportunity to bring that child back.”

“America should be loving this child at this moment,” Williams continued, growing visibly emotional. “Obviously we don’t know why he left. We think he’s a troubled person. We think he may have lost a sense of America’s mission. All true. But the idea is we don’t leave people in the enemy’s hands. The enemy saw him as an American soldier. That young man suffered. He was caged, Chris. His parents suffered. And yet people want to argue about the father’s beard. They want to say they shouldn’t have a parade. Let the military decide. The military’s in the best position, not us sitting here on this panel, and not all the political people on the Republican side who have flip-flopped — flip-flopped, Chris, in the most craven way. Unbelievable.”

Completely OT. For those who are interested, California Chrome clipped the back of his right forefoot coming out of the gate. From the pictures, the injury is about the size of a half dollar (for those of us old enough to remember) right on the coronet band. Having doctored injuries like this before and considering the depth a horse’s hoof sinks into the track surface, it’s entirely possible a gouge like that would discourage a maximum effort.

Happy, healthy peaceful days to one and all. Back to lurking.

“June 5, 2014 – Maternal mortality miracles empower Afghan women
Marika, 20, with newborn baby in Faizabad hospital. Badakhshan Province. Photo by Paula Bronstein, Getty Images.

KABUL, Afghanistan: Over the many trips that I have made to Afghanistan and Pakistan over the past two decades, the question I often ask women is, “What is most important to you and how can we help?”

You would think that a woman would say she wants prosperity or a good husband or list some desired material or luxury goods.
But in Afghanistan, women consistently tell me three things, “We want peace, we want education, and we don’t want our babies to die.” More recently, I’ve learned that they desperately fear dying in childbirth and being unable to take care of their babies.

    clip

ronically, the maternal mortality rate in the United States maternal mortality rate in the United States has simultaneously risen sharply, from 7.2 deaths/100,000 live births in 1987 to 18.5 deaths/100,000 live births in 2013, according to a University of Washington study. The US maternal mortality rate is double that of Saudi Arabia and Canada.”

Actor: Studios set double standard for black films
    By LYNN ELBER
    AP Television Writer

    June 7, 201

LOS ANGELES — Actor Taye Diggs says Hollywood studios hold African-American films to a frustratingly separate and unfair standard.

Whether a studio decides to proceed with a black-oriented film can depend on the success of other movies with primarily African-American casts, even if the projects are unconnected, said Diggs, who starred in “The Best Man” romantic comedy and its sequel.

In a recent interview, the actor said he and others who worked on the “Best Man” movies are eager to start on a third. But its fate is tied to how other black-oriented films, including the upcoming “Think Like a Man Too,” perform at the box office, he said.

“Unfortunately, the business is such that as far
as studios are concerned, they judge one quote-unquote black movie on
how other ‘black’ movies have done, even if they have nothing to do with each other,” he said.

Why Democrats Are Losing the Voter-ID Message War

Democrats have yet to counteract the Republicans’ voter-ID narrative—or their polling—even though most African Americans oppose new voter-ID laws when they catch on to what they are.
    By: Charles D. Ellison
    Posted: June 5 2014 4:49 PM

Voter-ID laws must not be all that bad if black folks like them, right?

That’s the new political wolf ticket that the Republican rank and file want you to buy. Conservative activists, as jumpy as So You Think You Can Dance contestants, have hit the media trail with their latest talking point: Black folks heart voter ID, courtesy of freshly baked polling numbers, courtesy of Fox News—the king of unapologetically biased networks.

Per Fox, 51 percent of African Americans are down with voter ID when they’re asked: “Supporters of these laws say they are necessary to stop ineligible people from voting illegally. Opponents say these laws are unnecessary and mostly discourage legal voters from voting. What do you think?”

And Republicans are, predictably, elated with the results, produced by this feat of leading questions and survey chicanery. Polls, after all, validate political narratives—if you word your question right, folks will tell you the sky is red. Flacks use them to raise money and win elections.

Polls won’t, however, point you in the direction of that other poll showing that way fewer whites feel the Voting Rights Act is necessary. Nor will they show the North Carolina PPP poll (pdf) that showed 72 percent of African Americans strongly oppose voter-ID laws—in a state that’s 25 percent black.

The Fox poll offers a dangerously legit-looking way to give mostly Republican state legislators ammunition for an amazingly misleading “we told you so” on voter ID. The message, beyond the numbers, suggests there’s nothing wrong with rigging, complicating and corrupting a relatively decent voting system that’s precariously fragile from years of abuse.

Springettsbury Twp. woman’s family history quest reveals much more than black and white
For Myra “Neicy” DeShields-Moulton, research is a way to show younger generations where, and who, they came from

    By Gary Haber

It seems like you drive for miles up and down the hills of southern York County before you reach it.

The tiny cemetery of Fawn AME Zion Church in Fawn Township is tucked down a narrow road that’s easy to miss.

Buried here, steps from the church, are many of Myra “Neicy” DeShields-Moulton’s relatives. Three fought for the Union in the Civil War.

A weathered stone marks the grave of Wesley Green, who was shot in the forearm during the war. Green passed in 1908, at the age of “about 69 years old,” his grave marker says. He is one of at least six black Civil War veterans buried in Pennsylvania and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore whose leaves are on DeShields-Moulton’s family tree.

Plenty of people dabble in their family’s genealogy. Ancestry.com and its related family-history websites, for example, have 2.7 million paid subscribers. But DeShields-Moulton, 54, has done far more than most. She’s made it her mission the last 15 years to peel back the layers of her personal history.

“It’s important that I know who I am,” she said, dressed in a T-shirt from a DeShields family reunion from a few years ago.

“May the Lord give you peace!

We have gathered here, Israelis and Palestinians, Jews, Christians and Muslims, so that each of us can offer his or her own that each of us can express his or her desire for peace for the Holy Land and for all who dwell there.

Together with Pope Francis, who greatly desired this moment, Patriarch Bartholomaios of Constantinople and all those present, Presidents Shimon Peres and Mahmoud Abbas will join in this calling, voicing the desire of their respective peoples to invoke to God the common longing for peace.

This evening’s meeting will consist of three parts, followed by a conclusion.

Each part will be devoted to an invocation by one of the three religious communities, in chronological order: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Each part will itself unfold in three moments. The first moment will consist of an expression of praise to God for his gift of creation, and for his having created us as members of the human family.

In the second moment, we will ask pardon from God for the times we have failed to act as brothers and sisters, and for our sins against him and against our fellow men and women.

In the third moment, we will ask God to grant the gift of peace to the Holy Land and to enable us to be peacemakers.

Each of these three moments will be framed by a brief musical interlude. A musical meditation will conclude each of the three main parts.”

    It would seem…..

    http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/06/07/bob-bergdhal-intelligent/

Bob Bergdahl, the father of rescued POW, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, may just be a little too intelligent and a little too understated and not nearly enough of an angry white dude to satisfy the GOP’s blood lust.

Mr. Bergdahl is an interesting character. Unfortunately, it’s his character that’s being slandered by the right, mainly because the GOP hasn’t a clue what to do with a guy who is soft-spoken and not hell-raising, has compassion for his son’s captors, is a deep thinker, appears to have the ability to walk in others’ shoes, and – most importantly – isn’t an ass-kicking, gun-wielding red-faced blowhard. All of this is very novel – strange, scary, therefore bad – for their very narrow mindsets and sliver-thin world views.

    • June 8, 2014 at 3:23 pm

“Mr. Bergdahl appears to be a wise, kind and compassionate man. We should all simply be glad that his boy’s coming home.”

The President is an Elitist Theme

    by BooMan
Sun Jun 8th, 2014 at 11:55:40 AM EST

It has always struck me as inherently unconvincing to argue that President Obama is an elitist, considering that he grew up as a mixed-race kid raised largely by his grandparents in a home of unextraordinary wealth. It’s true that he managed to get himself a couple of Ivy League degrees, but you could say the same thing about most presidents, even brush-clearing George W. Bush. In fact, Dubya, despite his down-home affectations, fits the bill of an elitist in nearly archetypical fashion. The son of a president and grandson of a senator, he was, as Ann Richards famously put it, “born on third base and thought he’d hit a triple.” Barack Obama was born in the on-deck circle and hit an actual home run.

But, whatever, the difference is that very few people ever took a look at George Bush and came away thinking that he was smarter than they are, so he didn’t elicit the visceral “he’s thinks he’s better than you” response that Obama sometimes does. Some folks don’t like people who are contemplative. So it goes.

Matthew Continetti wants to riff on this elitist thing, so he seizes on an anecdote from a long Obama profile Carrie Budoff Brown and Jennifer Epstein did for Politico about a dinner the president had in March while visiting Italy. Obama had asked the U.S. ambassador to assemble some interesting dinner guests. Here’s a partial list of things about this dinner that Continetti objects to, presumably because they demonstrate that the president is not a man of the people:

Hola and Happy Sunday ~ am back.. sort of, still cannot determine cause of my cpu problems.. but oh well, going to have to hand it over to the pros apparently.

Many thanks to Chips, Donna, Meta, Dudette, PrettyFoot.. and sorry if I missed others- on your lovely wishes on my new baby Granddaughter, named Avery June- in honor of my 81 yr old mother. This is my eldest son’s baby :) :)

About Love is Love… lemme tell you a story: My middle son was in a relationship for a few years with a lovely young woman, they gave birth to my second granddaughter who is now almost 7. After they broke up, the young woman, my granddaughter’s mommy fell in love with a wonderful woman.. they have been together for a few years now.. and she too has become parent to my granddaughter. A few years ago they- the two moms, asked my middle son to donate sperm (yes thats right) so that the second mom could give birth to a sibling for my granddaughter. My son and the two moms are not ‘involved’ other than they share parenting roles for my granddaughter, and of course they are also very good friends with each other. Thus I am expecting another grandchild (gender to be learned next friday) in November.

So there you have it- the ODDacity of my family ;) because Love IS Love. And by the way, my 6 yr old granddaughter is a marvelous, well adjusted and much loved child by all three of the families of this ‘trio’ of parents.

  39. June 8, 2014 at 3:46 pm

Hello, All. Classroom and family sadnesses have been overwhelming lately but I do drop in and read the top of the post, if not all the comments, when I can. Just thought I’d share this. I was driving to school on Friday and hadn’t traveled far from my house when a big SUV that had been behind me pulled into the lane next to me. He made a motion with his hand for me to roll down my window, the way you do when you want to tell someone their tire is low or their trunk lid is popped. I slowed and rolled my window down. He immediately began yelling “Thanks for Obama! He’s a disgrace! He’s disgusting! Thanks a lot”. I was so shocked, I just started laughing and laughing. He kept ranting until he finally pulled away. I guess laughing was probably the best response. But as I drove on I just became utter aghast at the virulent, obsessive hatred his brain must be steeped in to slow down in traffic to scream at someone because of a bumper sticker. I was pretty passionate about opposing Bush but I never ranted at people in their cars, in traffic. Never crossed my mind. I hope he doesn’t have children to teach this hatred to. Or maybe they’d become Democrats in protest.

My bumper sticker is a round magnet from 20013. Earlier this year someone wrote with black permanent marker “I am an idiot” across it. I left it there with the message on it, thinking it said more about the person who wrote it, rather than me. The snow this winter washed it clean :)

This has become a mental illness.

Sorry you had to deal with that hate, maryl1. It has become rampant, and I blame the media, for the most part. You did the right thing not to get angry and shout back at this ignorant man. I hope the collective “hive mind” of the GOP wakes up one of these days and says “what have we done?”. But I doubt it.
