Preliminary thoughts on Cantor’s loss

This is huge.

Eric Cantor is not just some backbencher. This is as big as when Tom Foley lost his seat in the Gingrich Revolution.

And Cantor outspent his Teabagger opponent by 25-1. And lost. Humiliatingly.

Cantor was the epitome of the GOP establishment. And that helped him not a jot.

What this shows is that there is a ferment on the Right against politics as usual. But the Right is so far out of the mainstream that it opens a door for the center-left.

If Democrats learn anything from tonight’s results, it’s that the GOP is vulnerable. All GOP candidates will now lurch to the right to avoid Cantor’s fate. And in doing so, they will be positioning themselves out of the mainstream. What works in a GOP primary does not work in a general election, as Mitt Romney showed.

Gird your loins, Obots. Things just got interesting.

Chat on!

My, my, my; Karma is indeed the biggest bitch. Cantor was eaten by the bastards that he helped to spawn. They succeed the dogs on the president and now they have turned on them.

So right Ceb, as Shakespeare said in Julius Caesar, they “let loose the dogs of war” and they turned around and bit them.
These people do not look at along picture. They only look at what immediately helps them. They should learn from the master: do not do anything that can come back and bite; do not say anything that will attack someone personally; do not make up lies that you will get caught in. These people really did let loose the dogs of war, and they are vicious! Now, Cantor knows, if he’s the least bit honest. He did this to himself.

One thing tonight also shows is that campaigns should rigorously vet the polling companies they rely on or prep their phone bankers to listen for voter unhappiness. Those that only pay attention to what they want to hear are going to be in for a lot of ugly surprises. Cantor’s is a case of having a lot of money, but not spending it wisely.

    From Spandan at TPV:

I am listening to C-Span’s coverage online, and anecdotally, it seems like a significant factor was Virginia’s primary system which while technically closed, allows voters to change party affiliation on the day of the vote. It seems a large number of independents and Democrats changed registration to vote for Cantor’s opponent, and they may well have provided his opponent’s margin.

If this is true, Republicans and the media should be deadly concerned. It would mean that Democratic voters are far more motivated AND far more organized than their polls’ “enthusiasm” detectors.

I read something about some guy somewhere earlier telling Dems to vote for the teabagger. It took less than 32K votes to unseat Cantor.

Great observation on your and Spandan’s parts, LL. Lots of dems here in GA voted in the GOP primary a couple weeks ago because they wanted to help the most extreme GOPTPer win. In the GOP runoff, will be Jack Kingston against David Perdue. It seems like Kingston, the more extreme candidate, has garnered the support of the GA Chamber, Gingrich, and other so-called GOP luminaries like Paul Broun and TP Queen Mary Beth Martin. Karen Handel is pissed that she lost and hasn’t announced which of these tools she will back.

Kingston is hoping that a black face will persuade blacks in GA to vote for him. I don’t think it will work because Kingston has a mouth he’s used to say very ugly things about PBO, poor people, minorities, and he’s extremely anti-immigration reform. Some things people find hard to forget. Kingston is a friend only to the super rich and corporations.

If Cantor’s defeat is mostly due to democrats voting against him, it changes the whole analysis. The Tea Party is definitely a force, but not as strong as this result implies at first glance. Let’s be careful in our interpretation….and wait for more information. Republicans in Virginia must be able to count how many primary voters today were democrats or independents…

I think that if it’s indeed the case that Cantor lost because of democrats, we may see a general movement towards more strict rules in primaries…

One more thought for all of us working hard to elect Dem candidates. When we reach out to voters, we need to really listen to what they say. Racking up calls and getting forms filled out is fine, but actually hearing people is better. If we know what’s annoying or motivating people, we have a better chance of getting the message right and helping our candidate win. Democrats are better listeners than Republicans. We actually care about people and have empathy for their concerns. It can make a big difference.

    • June 10, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Jackie, this is a BIG DEAL MESSAGE you’ve just enunciated …

Eric Cantor, the TP enabler, Eric Cantor the staunch opponent to everything PBO even thinks about doing will be at home in VA in 2015 and my dear, terrific PBO will still be living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave! My better angel makes me feel a little bad about rejoicing over Cantor’s loss because PBO always tells us not to spike the ball, but my other side is winning because of the hateful way that Cantor and all of the GOP have treated PBO and by extension the rest of us. He has obstructed, lied, and refused to govern, holding the whole country in contempt. He more than deserves this ignominious defeat and I hope that it is true that the Independents and the Democrats in the state played a part in it. Cantor, like so many others since 2009, we’re emboldened and over-reached until they brought about their own defeat.

Jovie, remember the tea baggers also won in the primaries in Nevada and Delaware in 2010 ! Guess how that turned out! Harry Reid, almost pronounced dead, won his Senate re-election and the tea bag “I am not a witch” was thoroughly humiliated in Delaware. To be honest, I think Cantor’s Congressional seat is now in play for the Democrats. And I am excited! I say bring on the extreme tea baggers! BREAKING NEWS: Moments ago, Eric Cantor was ousted from Congress in the Virginia Republican Primary.

From Day One of Obama’s presidency, Eric Cantor has used every dirty trick to block the Democratic agenda. There are so many big issues we could make progress on without Republicans like Eric Cantor in our way: raising the minimum wage, passing comprehensive immigration reform, student loan reform, and making millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share just to name a few.

And tonight, Cantor has been thrown out by the Tea Party base that he’s kowtowed to at every turn.

AMERICA’S VOICE REACTS TO NEWS OF CANTOR’S LOSS IN VA-07 GOP PRIMARY

    America’s Voice | Released on 06/10/2014 at 9:28pm

    ————————————————-

“Let’s be clear: Eric Cantor was no friend of immigration reform. He’s been the main person in the House blocking a vote on citizenship, and he proudly campaigned on his opposition to reform.
    .
    .
“Whether immigration reform happens or not, these are the facts: a year ago the Senate passed a bipartisan bill, it’s still up to the House GOP leadership to decide whether to give us a vote or not, and the votes exist in the House to pass reform. Maybe Boehner will be freed up to do the right thing. But if the House GOP declares immigration dead, then we will turn to a President who has the authority to take executive action.

“If the House GOP declares immigration is dead, then so is the GOP as a national party. The growing number of Latino, Asian American and immigrant voters will make sure of it.

I’m so out of the political loop that I wasn’t aware there was a primary in VA today.

Agree with Carolyn that Cantor’s whining and smirking was so juvenile and off-putting. Really glad that sneering SOB will be looking for other work — hopefully not as a lobbyist.

upChuck Todd is prattling on via Twitter about how Cantor’s stance on immigration reform sank him in the primary. How can this be true if Cantor is against immigration reform?

Haven’t listened to the news (or read TOD — hangs head in shame) since this afternoon west coast time, but the lead story on CBS radio news was President Obama’s infrastructure initiative. Someone (didn’t catch who said this) said that the majority of people (I think he said two thirds) support infrastructure improvement.

Please proceed, GOP. Keep alienating all voters except for the 24% who believe the earth is flat.

Cantor’s speech – saying it is necessary for conservatives to get to work and do something for their country!!!! – He’s had 6 years to do just that.

Meanwhile – his opponent – attacked Cantor for supporting immigration reform – for not closing down the government – this is seriously scarey stuff. Surely a good campaign that tells the truth can defeat this crazy one??
