4:0 EDT: The President delivers remarks and answers questions in a Tumblr event, State Dining Room
Hi Chips and TOD Family!
How did you beat CarolMae???
Gold medals to you. :star:
I’m not sure!!! Thanks, NCLB!!
Allison – congrats on First!
It’s soooo nice to see a fresh face up here!!!!
Thanks, GG. I was lucky this time!!
Congrats Allison and LL!
Allison, congratulations on first!
He always knows how to interact with people of all ages.
HE HAS TRUE COMPASSION….THERE ISN’T ANYONE HE CANNOT CONVERSE WITH….LOVE FOR PEOPLE IS 99% OF THIS ABILITY!
The authenticity and integrity of this president is exceptional. You never sense that he’s playing games. You never sense that what he says in public is different than what he says in private. He never uses flashy rhetoric, simplistic thinking, he never tries to emotionally manipulate people. He is careful of course, and self-aware, because he knows his words are parsed and analyzed. But he’s always completely AUTHENTIC.
Another one who has that quality is vice-president Biden. I love and admire the VP too.
I agree 100%. You know this is true because you can’t fool kids. I call him the pied piper. Children just flock to him.
Note: if Joe Biden was a little younger, he would be very difficult to beat in my opinion, both in the primaries and in a general election. Sadly, his age will be an issue if he decides to run. But boy I would love him to run. Because of his name recognition and his position as the VP, he would be given much more talking time in the primary debates this time around… He would be given a platform and FINALLY, FINALLY, the american people and the press would stop treating him like a joke. He is knowledgeable, intelligent, honest. He is an excellent debater. And he has charisma in spades.
Note: Bob Gates, who is a friend and ally of Hillary , made sure to bash Joe Biden in his book. Unfairly I might add. Just sayin’…
George Will went and blamed rape victims for their own plight – and Twitter responded with a smackdown thebea.st/1qp2VOH— The Daily Beast (@thedailybeast) June 10, 2014
The Scarlet letter should now be placed upon the chest of the GOP and RWNJ. They are hopelessly out of touch with reality. America has moved on.
GEORGE WILL=SICK MAN!…DISGUSTING STATEMENT AND IT WILL CONTINUALLY COME BACK ON HIM!
Thanks for the heads up and keeping it short Chips! :)
More people will die/year d/t GOP governors not expanding Medicaid than have died in terrorist attacks since country began. Outraged yet?— john miller (@deaconmill) June 10, 2014
Thank you, Japa. This death toll can be fixed with the simple change of a governor and by electing sane state legislatures. The SCOTUS decision to make Medicaid expansion optional was among their vast number of heartless acts. That stupid opinion, along with the obtuseness of Republican governors, is the cause of many people dying needlessly.
Another HRC position don’t expect her to talk about; As SOS was in Favor of the Keystone pipeline.
It never matters what the Clintons ‘say’ to win elections – they act like GOP once in office.
The media won’t dare question the NRA or the GOPers who take $$$ from them – despite hundreds of young people being killed by mass shooters in just the last 2-3 yrs. But the same media will spend weeks upon weeks upon months harassing the President for releasing a POW – something that Presidents have done without any objection for decades.
Will Chris Matthews on *liberal* MSNBC show the same kind of rage about the NRA and the school shootings that he did just a few days ago regarding PBO’s release of Sgt Bergdahl?
NO…unless Hillary says this is really bad!
HF, Regarding Mathews, it depends upon his mental state. Not sure which way he’ll swing tonight!
With Mathews, I always assumed that he goes off when he is off his meds. Quite a recurring event, though.
You all are very kind thought…I’m more inclined to agree with Vicki on this. There is a method to Matthews’ madness, and it’s about $$$$ and pleasing his corporate bosses, by adhering to the GOP line of thought.
Unpredictable man. Bi-polar? or just desperate to please his masters and stay on the air.
Remember. The bosses took away his Sunday show, his 5 o’clock timeslot and his 11:00 re-runs. Chris will do as he is told.
Is spitting everywhere a part of that bargain?
He is one second from a stroke.
Long walks and meditation can help a lot(plus the Meds he is not taking)
I cannot stand to watch him. It has been so long. I could never stand the loudness even on mute.
The body rage is enough to throw the television out the window.
They are ALL spineless, Hf. Not a single one of the current crop of so called pundits and (cough) journalists has the guts to ask tough questions of Republicans and their gun lobby enablers. Attacking the president is safe because: a) they don’t risk fatigue since all the talking points come ready-made from the GOP; b) they don’t risk threats from gun nuts; and d) they don’t risk good bonuses from their GOP bosses.
Hmmm, CarolMae, what heads up? Is that how you do it? (LOL)
The heads up for the tumbler Conference. . .
Everything is everything.
I’m not seeing or hearing anything…am I doing something wrong? LOL!
Okay never mind – I found the interview! :)

Well, DC press ARE republicans
I do not think PBO expects congress to pass any of his ideas. What I do see is PBO nicely setting out his agenda for the nov elections. He will make this about him and the American people, IMHO
Layla, so true. He is past done with their BS.
These next two and a half years, we will witness greatness in leadership like we have never seen before.
He has given them more than enough chances to be a part of history. The rejected every opportunity.
The liars, cheaters, racists, haters have ALL been exposed
So let the chips fall where they should.(excuse me, Ms. Chips).
The American people is he who came to serve. And serve, he did!
I will be forever grateful to him for his humility and respect that he showed how to include everyone(whether I agreed or not).
He fought and is fighting the good fight with or without them.
Yep. It’s pretty clear that he will use the problem of students’ debt to motivate the young generation to go the polls in droves in November.
And that is how you do it…….Period!

Thanks Bob for your persistence in demanding accountability! We also need to bombard law makers to put the concept of “A well regulated militia” back in the Second Amendment! ” The necessity of “A well regulated militia” is the premise of the 2nd Amendmen’t’s “right of the people to keep and bear arms.” Even in the so called “wild west,” many cities and municipalities enacted ordinances that regulated the possession and use of guns. The Second Amendment does not give individuals –including deranged people or those illegally and seditiously advocating the overthrow of the government of the United States –unlimited right to own guns of all types, including military style assault weapons.
Someone asks PBO “what is he going to do about these mass school shooting sprees” on a tumblr segment devoted to student loans. Meanwhile, PBO has pretty much done all he could over the last 2 years regarding gun violence.
Yep, it is now in the hands of the American people!
No it’s the hands if the NRA and the republicans!
I don’t know how they got all this power?
The American people NEED to change this!
But they live for the guns.
Jovie, too many good people repeat and believe the NRA talking points that there are already laws on the books to prevent these killings its just the gubmint won’t follow the law. They don’t know the NRA has deluted the laws. People need to stop asking PBO and start asking Congress to DO something.
IT IS STILL IN THE HANDS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE…THEY HAVE A FREE WILL AND THEY NEED TO PLACE IT IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION…AMERICA HAS BECOME A VIOLENT NATION…AND 74 SCHOOL SHOOTINGS SINCE SANDY HOOK…:(
The GOP and the NRA seem to be controlling the gun issue regardless of what the American public want. So I think their good guys (in their eyes only) need to arm themselves and offer a shoot out with the bad guys they sent over the line at the Okay Corral at dusk. We can all stay away hoping they settle the problem themselves by eliminating both sides.
Americans need “Government for Dummies” lessons to be reminded how laws are enacted. We’ve become a very ignorant nation and it doesn’t seem to be improving.
Three college kids take US Government! It’s a requirement. So…, they know what’s up. Unless, they’re republicans!

Thank you Mr. President. The mental illness argument is a cop-out. I’ve always maintained that mental illness is universal, and many of the so-called killers have access to top-notch mental health care.
They’re also stereotyping all mental il messes as horrible People!
Lincoln was bi polar, btw! :)
The video game, and violence on television are a cop-out too.
ONE thing is different in the USA: the access to guns.
I hope this quote of President Obama makes the news. He simply states the obvious, but when the President speaks, it gets more attention.
I think this “Old Bird” will lurk from now on. . .

Just got this from Emily’s List
“Enter for a chance to meet Hillary Clinton. Donate to EMILY’s List today to be automatically entered for a chance to meet Hillary Clinton. We’ll fly you and a guest to D.C., put you up in a hotel, and send you both home with a signed copy of Hard Choices.”
My response o them: No…. I don’t want to meet Hillary.
Oh…and when we she be out campaigning for Dems during the upcoming mid-terms?
Carla Sweet, M.D.
Hopefully they are providing special medication in order to be able to survive this escapade!
I saw some tweets about Hillary waiting until the end of the year before deciding whether or not to run. I don’t care what she decides. I will decide who to support based on how hard they work and how successfully they campaign and raise money for candidates this year. The election is only a little over 5 months from now–and I am underwhelmed by Hillary’s messaging for it. As voters, we are actually the ones with the power to decide who will be our next President.
Hillary has decided to run a long time ago. She’s simply waiting for the optimal time to announce. To be fair, the fact that she’s perceived as a sure winner makes it harder for her to decide when to announce. Because the minute she does, media people will consider her as the new leader of the democratic party and will ask her to comment on every single decision of the president. The mainstream media is going to OBSESS over the differences, rivalry between the leadership of Hillary and the leadership of President Obama. This will be very tough for both, on the personal side and on the political side.

“She’s not the answer when it comes to winning conservative women — she never was — and we’re not going to be anybody’s attack dog against Sarah Palin,” said a Clinton insider. “To be fair to Obama’s people, they haven’t asked us to do that.”
Slamming Palin to win back women already hostile to Obama is pointless, the insider said, because Clinton’s most loyal base is working-class voters, not women in particular. “Attacking Palin is checkers, attacking McCain on the economy is chess.”
Funny that Maggie H is the One tweeting this now? OK. Politico has now proven that indeed, their 1st LOYALTY is for Not Hillary Clinton.   2014. 2014. 2014.

Why Is Cable Television So Afraid of Admitting That Many of America’s Terror Attacks Are ‘Right Wing?’
CNN has been afraid calling a major social threat by its real name.

“Terrorists” have not-so-white skin and funny names. Not Bundy or Miller.

Now people are going to get all huffy n puffy because he used the word “crazy” when they should be getting huffy n puffy at the damn NRA and their allies in congress!!!
They should be getting huffy puffy at the number of people getting killed including all the children!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Personally I don’t believe most of the folks who are committing gun violence have a mental illness. I think these folks are as POTUS stated, crazy as in not rational thinkers, right wing nut jobs, who dislike government (unless they need them), and have major issues with people who they consider “other” having rights and freedoms like every other citizen. They fear having no one to blame for their feelings of inferiority and no one to look down on as the cause of their angst.
We have a tendency to want to believe that a person who would do this type of crime is some how mentally unbalanced….I do not know if they are or are not…but what I do know is that listening to hate filled rhetoric day in and day out…distorts and contaminates ones view of reality and the world…
Lord, people can get distracted by any shiny object!
We have a gun violence problem people, not a semantics problem!
This president is parsed to within an inch of our sanity every single day.
I appreciate PBO’s comments on gun violence and agree that it is stunning that nothing has been done, especially after Newtown. I keep thinking that surely there is one person of integrity in Congress, or a group of them, who will stand up and say, “This continuing, daily violence is unacceptable. This is damaging our country. We need to make some changes, and we can’t wait one more day.” But all must be so fearful of the NRA that they, the people we elect to represent our interests, remain mute. PBO made clear that public pressure is the only thing that will ever bring sensible gun safety laws—–when those in Congress are as fearful of being voted out of office as they are of the NRA threatening to fund opponents.
Check any news site in this country any day—–there are shootings galore everywhere—–all kinds of people for all kinds of supposed reasons—–most don’t get the publicity——it’s become so commonplace—–5 here, 3 there, 30 in a weekend in Chicago. And I do think mental instability is present in almost all of the shootings—–well adjusted people aren’t shooting people—-period. But the difference, like President Obama said, is the huge proliferation of guns in this country—–it seems everyone has one now, including the mentally unstable. And whatever ticks someone off in a bad moment—-they’re pulling out their guns and shooting away—- instead of storming out of a house and slamming a door or squealing out of a parking lot or yelling swears or divorcing or maturely overlooking an irritation in a parking lot or a wrong fast food order or moving on from losing a girlfriend or anything——even if your cinnamon roll was stale—–people are shooting. And on top of all this we have FOX and hate radio stirring up the unbalanced to react in a violent way with nonstop ever escalating violent rhetoric and preposterous accusations, preying on the vulnerable, those who hate and believe conspiracy theories—–then we have a situation that is out of control.
The people need to decide that they are going to force a change. We don’t have to live in this kind of country.

“Get off your asses and use your voices and votes to bring about the change that you claim to want.”
“Get off your asses and use your voices and votes to bring about the change that you claim to want.”
it is in he hands of We The People”
if we could organize simultaneous demonstrations…Moral Mondays if you will…nationwide…and then if that same organized citizenry went to the polls….there would be gun control laws in the land….
We are the Change we seek!
Democrats have stood up. It’s the GOP who have presented obstacles every step of the way. Until and unless we win back the House and keep the Senate, we are not going to see any action take place. It’s that simple.
If you listen to Senator Blunehthal on tv, he sounds like a republican talking about berghdahl!
No difference anymore, democrats and republicans in congress, against the president.
The trick is to no longer listen. By now we all know what they re going to say.
Someone needs to remind him that we remember his lying about his service in Vietnam.
Republicans have cultivated fear, hysteria for fourteen years now. Americans are weary of war, but the fear of “terrorists” is still there. In that atmosphere, releasing five Talibans is politically difficult. Political courage isn’t that common in Washington. So it’s not surprising that some democrats are running from the President.
They did the same with the ACA and other battles. The GOP is so so good at creating hysteria on everything, that some cowards in the democratic party are afraid all the time. And instead of realizing that the republicans are playing them like violins, they resent the president for making things “difficult”.

They don’t know how to fly Blackhawks!
As a retired mental health clinical counselor I want to say a word or two about these shootings. For 7 of my 30 plus years I worked as an crisis intervention specialist and involuntary commitment investigator on psychiatric cases referred for civil court commitment here in the Oregon public sector community mental health system. I worked in a rural and a metropolitan county organization. In that capacity it was my job to assess individuals for dangerousness, suicidal and homicidal potential. The literature says, and it is true, that it is virtually impossible to predict with any certainty whether someone will act out in a homicidally aggressive way towards others. The biggest predicting factor is prior history. However many of these mass shooters don’t have any history. In truth from what I can discern, many of them are not actually candidates for mental health treatment, as they are persons who have an Anti-Social Personality Disorder (Sociopath, Psychopath), and hence their main problem is the lack of control and lack of conscience. They act out for ideology or vengeance, or simple pure hate. Some cases involve persons with psychotic delusional symptoms, like Schizophrenia with Paranoid Delusions, or Major Depression. I can tell you that the involuntary commitment laws provide very little safety to the public, because commitment is not possible based on what a person “might” do, but on what they have done. And the commitment confinement is very temporary if at all. What would be helpful is a major upgrade of our mental health community services and laws that would allow for early involuntary intervention at first warning signs, and extended confinement if required. Our present system is really a “diversion” system, not a “prevention” system. It is underfunded and designed to keep people from expensive hospitalization. So the conservatives love it, and the civil libertarians love it. But it basically abandons families and communities to cope with out of control people aggressive people who eventually end up in the criminal justice system, or dead, or homicidal. So when people start looking at gun violence as a mental health problem they need to be called out on what they mean and what they are willing to do. In the meantime we need to stop arming our most dangerous people with the most lethal weapons capable of mass murder.
Thanks for sharing your expertise, Bill. It’s a huge problem. I just heard that law enforcement visited the Las Vegas shooters a month ago and didn’t find them a real threat—–referred by Homeland Security. And a similar occurrence with the Santa Barbara shooter—-parents and therapist recommended police visit, and they did not find him a threat to himself or others. Law enforcement is not equipped to make that assessment. So many of our mental hospitals have been closed, and community mental health centers are underfunded and overwhelmed. I recently heard the Chgo police chief estimate that 2/3 in the Cook Co. jail now are mentally ill, and they are not equipped to help. It is a terrible and dangerous and sad situation.
