Early Bird Chat

Randomness, because it’s one of the loveliest: President Barack Obama hugs Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient actor Sidney Poitier during the award ceremony in the East Room of the White House, on Aug. 12, 2009 (Photo by Pete Souza)

I wake up and check in and it’s Early Bird chat. Today is my lazy morning but I needed to see what is going on in TODville. Chips how many soccer balls does Danny have. Doesn’t look like they last to long.

    • June 16, 2014 at 7:54 am

:-) I think he’s gone through about 10 at this stage Marilyn, although the latest one he shredded was his biggest challenge, he’s been working on for it four months!!

  3. June 16, 2014 at 7:25 am

GM, TOD. I’ve been traveling for the past week plus so have lurked and kept up with y’all. :). Will be heading back home today from York, PA. Sure would appreciate prayers for safety and my knee………lots of knee and back issues and sitting is the worst. Will be making frequent stops and this will be a two-day trip.

Tn, so sorry about the back and knee issues. I identify with the challenge of sitting for long periods on car trips and my prayers and positive thoughts go with you. Pls let us know when you get back safely. Good luck!

Good morning. Hope our president gets to sleep in this morning. The idea of coming back from a lovely California setting to the ugliness of DC would fill me with dread, but I know he’s made of sterner stuff. Have a great day, Chips, Danny and all who’ve managed to greet the sun.

    Good morning TOD!
What a weekend. There is so much to catchup on here when you miss ONE day. But I love every minute of it because I know it is quality truth.
Thank you everyone here for all you do to make this wonderful place that I call home a treasure to lurk, post, cry, LOL, cry some more……

Prayers for Vicki this morning while she allows restoration, rejuvenation, meditation to balance, heal and strengthen her for the remaining two remarkable years that our President will continue to soar like an eagle. We are still yet to be amazed as long as we hold on, hang in there and stand with him, by him as he fights the good fight
    .
Tnmtngirl, I pray for healing on your back and knee while you travel. As soon as you can get to a health food store please try Turmeric. It is amazing for pains and inflammation. My sons played basketball all during school and after. We have always believed in natural and alternative medicines. It is a more natural remedy and no side effects. Just mix with water ( preferably Alkaline water)……too much prescription medicines being dispensed to us along with dangerous side effects. I also practice Qi Gong after daily walks. It helps to balance your body, mind and spirit.
    It gives you peace.
    Okay. Time to walk.

Sigh. Today is asking Bush Iraq War genius, Paul Bremer, of disbanding Iraqi army and missing billions fame, for his deep thoughts on what to do about Iraq. I didn’t listen to his answer. And double sigh—–CBS is tweeting ‘Will ISIS launch a 9/11 style attack in the U.S.?’——-same fear and war mongering as I heard from ABC news last night.

Sound like to me the Republicans are trying to scare Americans so people will say we better go over there and get them before they come over here and get us. The way I look at it America is always understand threat, America always have to try to be prepared for those threats.

Do dogs eat hairbrushes? I can’t find mine and I’ve just washed my hair, so I look like a scarecrow.

    • June 16, 2014 at 8:35 am

Good West Coast morning Chipsticks & TOD family. No Chips, dogs don’t eat them, they bury them. Have you looked outside for your hairbrush? LOL!

      • June 16, 2014 at 8:43 am

Moooooooorning GGail! I actually checked the garden (found a towel from the bathroom – how did he get up there?), but still no sign of my brush and my hair is nearly dry now, so I look like a scarecrow that’s had an electric shock. This is very traumatic.

It is official, after my heat having lost to the Spurs in the NBA finals; I am now in football mode. I’m talking about real football, not that game in Brazil where if you looked at your opponent the wrong way, the referee gives you a one inch by two inch decorative card that reads In part “you’ve been a bad boy.”

    • June 16, 2014 at 9:42 am

Yeah Don I know what you mean. Sports wise this is the toughest time of year for me. Trying to hang on for a month and a half until preseason starts. Baseball just doesn’t do it for me anymore like when I was a kid.

I had to go online to the county clerk’s office in the city I was married in because I couldn’t remember the date that I married my lovely wife. We have been married for seventeen years. Question, is it odd of us that we don’t have wedding rings? We’ve never had wedding rings; it was something that we didn’t really obsess over. There have been times that we’ve both forgot about our anniversary and a couple of days later one of us is like, “guess what baby, our anniversary was last week.”

‘Different strokes for different folks’, Don! I see nothing ‘odd’ about doing what works for both of you and doesn’t harm anyone else. (This comment from a being who has been slowly arriving at the conclusion that we humans make far too much fuss about special dates.) ;)

    • June 16, 2014 at 9:15 am

As long as you two are happy, such things don’t matter. Congrats on seventeen years.

Not odd at all imho. My super mechanic dad never wore a wedding ring for obvious reasons, Don and he was so madly in love with my mother, there was no room in his head or heart for anyone else.

Seems you and your lady have a mutual serenity that has no need of external fallacies. Wishing you both loving continuity.

    Obama’s offspring is going Hollywood.

Malia Obama has been working as a production assistant on the Los Angeles set of Halle Berry‘s TV series “Extant,” the upcoming CBS sci-fi produced by top Obama bundler Steven Spielberg.

Last week, the President’s oldest daughter “helped with computer shop alignments and the director also let her slate a take,” a set source told TheWrap.

There’s no word on when the 15-year-old, a rising high school junior, headed west to California or how long she will stay. Her school semester ended in mid-June.

The President and First Lady flew to California on Friday and spent the weekend with Malia in Palm Springs. Their youngest daughter, 13-year-old Sasha, wasn’t with the family.

        June 16, 2014 at 9:43 am

I never knew this until I read that article in the New Yorker that she was interested in film making. I am happy that Malia at such a young age has a passion for something like this and is getting the opportunity to pursue it.

    • June 16, 2014 at 10:01 am

I love that she is actively engaging in her interests and passions. I was once a PA for 26 episodes of a PBS food series and it is an absolute and total thrill. What I learned is that it takes a TON of people and a million details to make a show happen, so Malia will get a real taste of what it’s like to be in the middle of creative chaos! And to be in the hands of people like Halle Berry and Steve Spielberg – WOW! You go, Malia!

What a great opportunity for her! She is in especially good hands with Steven because he has always been good with and loves all kids (he has 6, some of whom are adopted and multi-racial). Not only are several of his children artistic (two of them have formed a music duo), but he was raised by a mom who gave him the freedom to express himself artistically in whatever manner he chose.

    So predictable…. http://politicalwire.com/archives/2014/06/16/bonus_quote_of_the_day.html

“At the risk of appearing predictable, the Bible was and remains the biggest influence on my thinking. I was raised reading it, memorizing passages from it and being guided by it. I still find it a source of wisdom, comfort and encouragement.”

    — Hillary Clinton, interviewed by the New York Times, on her favorite book.

This must be why she beat Obama on every issue… she says all the right things at all the right times…

I watched her on book tv over the weekend…..she never mentioned the Bible…..

I do have to admit that she was very impressive in her knowledge of what is going on in the World.

I will still have to hold my nose if she gets the nomination….

I also watched Lisa Meyers on cspan Q&A last night. She was a 33 year journalist for NBC. She said Hillary ” distrusts ” reporters and we should expect her to be combative with them if she runs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says federal law does not allow a “straw” purchaser to buy a gun for someone else, even if both are legally eligible to own firearms.

The justices ruled Monday that the federal background check law applied to Bruce James Abramski, Jr. when he bought a Glock 19 handgun in Collinsville, Virginia, in 2009 and later transferred it to his uncle in Easton, Pennsylvania.

Federal officials brought charges against Abramski because he assured the Virginia dealer he was the actual buyer of the weapon, even though he had already agreed to buy the gun for his uncle.

The high court rejected Abramski’s argument that since both he and his uncle were legally allowed to own guns, the law shouldn’t have applied to him.

On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List has standing to challenge a state law in Ohio that prohibits false statements about political candidates.

The unanimous ruling, written by Justice Clarence Thomas, says the group demonstrated a “sufficiently imminent injury” and therefore its First Amendment case against the law may move forward.

Conservatives including Justice Antonin Scalia have sardonically dubbed it the “Ministry of Truth” statute.

“The question in this case is whether their preenforcement challenge to that law is justiciable—and in particular, whether they have alleged a sufficiently imminent injury for the purposes of Article III. We conclude that they have,” Thomas wrote for the Court.

In 2010, SBA List sought to put up a billboard accusing then-Rep. Steve Driehaus, a Democrat, of supporting taxpayer-funded abortion by voting for Obamacare. Driehaus complained to state officials, saying it ran afoul of the campaign lies law. Although the state didn’t take action, the billboard company refused to put up the ad, which caused SBA List to sue, alleging the law had a chilling effect on its free speech rights.

Driehaus has since left Congress. But the Supreme Court has permitted the constitutional challenge against the Ohio law to move forward, concluding that “the threat of future enforcement of the false statement statute is substantial.”

    This is just plain awful:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Dozens of Somali extremists wielding automatic weapons attacked a Kenyan coastal town for hours, assaulting the police station, setting two hotels on fire, and spraying bullets into the street. At least 48 people were killed, officials said Monday.

The assault began around 8 p.m. local time on Sunday as residents were watching World Cup matches on TV. The attack met little resistance from the country’s security apparatus, and lasted until early Monday morning
