    June 19th is Juneteenth Day.

    Emancipation Day.

    • 15 GGail
      June 18, 2014 at 1:20 pm

Nena, Juneteenth Day is a little more than just Emancipation Day. This is the day the slaves in Texas heard that they were free – 2 1/2 years AFTER the proclamation of Emancipation.

      http://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation – which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive Order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

This chuck todd poll and the timing of its release is political propaganda, pure and simple. The hyper commentary concerning this one poll is extremely questionable (I mean how much should one read into a single poll). To suggest that a single poll result that is not that different from prior results somehow indicates the end of a Presidency is outrageous in it’s stupidity. Such commentary also acts as if PBO did not just catch the ringleader of the Benghazi attack. Surely bringing a leader behind a terrorist attack that is still in the news and the subject of hearings in DC will render this poll’s results “stale”. This poll and the hyperbolic pimping of its results are designed to limit any rise in the polls PBO may see (it is also designed to keep up GOP morale in the face of reality making them look stupid). The msm/gop strategy for 2014 appears to be entirely media and propaganda centered. Their plan seems to be based on a theory that if PBO/Dems lose every 24 hour news cycle, the GOP will win big in the Mid-terms. Personally I think such a plan will fail because increasing numbers of people are tuning out the corporate owned “news” media. The increased desperation of the msm/gop to bring PBO down has served to unmask the true nature of country’s media (it is the communications arm of the GOP). But that seems to be their strategy. As a result, we have the big networks refusing to give PBO primetime to tout ACA success, John McCain on every channel bashing the President with no push back, blackout of PBO’s foreign trips, the coordinated media attack on a POW in an effort to harm PBO politically, a parade of GOP war criminals on all the Sunday shows (treated as sage experts and not traitors who lied us into an unjust war) telling us how “weak” the President is and now some bogus poll released the day after the capture of a terrorist (which happens to make the GOP look very bad and petty after the terrorist stated it was the video that inspired the attack, effectively debunking years of msm/gop/fox conspiracy theories). It is going to be one crazy summer as the msm goes into overdrive depressing democrats and protecting the gop base from the reality of PBO’s greatness.

Yes. Most TV and radio journalists are trained in PSYOPS. It is the same psychological operations used to prep any war zone, Afghan, Iraq, and neighborhoods filled with uneducated whites who have a very real and primitive fear of annihilation. The most powerful inoculate against PSYOPS are READING historical texts such as those found in thrift and secondhand stores. It is imperative that children of color are taught to read very early and to develop a love for reading, learning, and analysis. In addition, we need RAPPERS to turn their constructive verbal analysis on the GOP, the news media, and the domestic terrorists who occupy seats in the US Congress. They need to push back against the corporations and individuals who have turned our country into a cesspool of hate. We only need ONE RAP SONG or SONG that we can sing, play, and tweet all over the planet. We also need to call these people by their name – they are domestic terrorists, which includes many of today’s faux journalists. When u tweet them or refer to them in a tweet, call them out by their name domestic terrorist!

I am so crazy about Jay ‘Clark Kent’ Carney, I am going to need a few tissues for his last WHPC briefing with the jackals. I am sure it will be emotional for him too. He is adorable and such a sweetheart. I am touched by his special relationship with President Obama. The picture of them leaving AF1 arm in arm says it all.

Dow Jones up 8,000 points. American auto industry saved. Housing values rebound. Iraq War over. Osama Bin Laden dead. Two sane justices on a United States Supreme Court that desperately needs them. Affordable Care Act. Biggest Medicaid expansion in history. Civil rights revolution for gays and lesbians. No major domestic terrorist attacks. Most aggressive actions on climate change of any American President. Syria gives up WMD without losing a single American life. Gaddafi forced from power without losing a single American life. . .

F***Chuck Todd. This President should be on Mount Rushmore given the mess he inherited, the job he’s done, and the context in which he’s done it.”

Remarks by the First Lady at the naturalization ceremony (sorry for the length. I received it via email).

    11:11 A.M. EDT

MRS. OBAMA: Well, let me join Jeh by saying good morning, my fellow Americans. Sounds pretty good, huh? (Laughter.) You like that, right? All right, I’m going to loosen you up if it takes all morning. You’re now citizens! It’s very cool. (Laughter.) And I am honored to be here. This is an exciting day, and it’s just wonderful that I can be among the first to congratulate you on becoming American citizens.

And I also want to welcome your family and friends who are here — let’s see the family members who are here. Where are they? You guys are here, that’s good, that’s good. Yes. (Applause.) I know how important these people are because I know that they’ve supported you every step of the way. And I see that they are beaming with pride, so welcome.

I want to thank Secretary Johnson, Director Scialabba, for taking the time to be here today and for their tremendous work. I also want to especially thank David and the incredible staff at the National Archives for making today’s event possible. This is a beautiful setting.

It’s amazing that just a few feet from here where I’m standing are the signatures of the 56 Founders who put their names on a Declaration that changed the course of history. And like the 50 of you, none of them were born American — they became American.

Just like you’re about to pledge allegiance to our flag, they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to this extraordinary idea that we now know as America -– the notion that we are all created equal, endowed with fundamental rights and freedoms that no one can ever take away from us.

People come from across the globe to see these documents, to read the names and signatures of the very first “Americans-by-choice,” because they know that this room holds the first chapter of our shared history. And today, it holds the next chapter of our story, as well.

As the newest “Americans-by-choice,” you, too, will play an important part in shaping our history. Some of you were brought here as children. Others came here to be with a loved one. Some of you, like Parish Sapkota, have risked their lives for this country by serving overseas. Others haven’t worn the uniform themselves, but have served America by supporting a spouse or a child who has.

Take Blue Star Mom Zlatka Stefanova. Her son Marian was wounded in an ambush in Iraq. He spent 18 months at Walter Reed recovering from his injuries. And today, with the love and support of his mother, Marian is a proud officer in the Fairfax Police Department.

But no matter what your story, from this day forward, for the rest of your lives, you will always be able to say, “Yes, I am an American citizen.” And I know this is an exciting, hopeful time for all of you, but it’s also an exciting, hopeful time for our country. Because the fact is, America needs you.

Immigration is at the heart of how we developed as a nation. In every generation, immigrants have earned their place as part of “We the People.” With the exception of just a few ethnicities, every person in this country can trace their history back to a parent, or a grandparent, or a great-grandparent, or an ancestor who made that choice to be part of this country.

And today, much of our success is because we still very much are a nation of immigrants. Immigrants start roughly one in four of our new businesses. About 30,000 permanent residents serve in our military. And according to one study, over the past 50 years, more than a quarter of our Nobel Laureates based in the U.S. have been foreign-born.

So in many ways, it is because of, not in spite of, our immigrant population that we grow stronger every single day. Yet today, here in Washington, folks are still debating whether or not to fix our immigration system even though just about everyone agrees that it is broken. But I want you all to know that my husband has made this his top legislative priority, and he refuses to give up the fight. Because at the end of the day, this fight isn’t just about abstract principles, it’s about real people. People like you. People like us — our fellow Americans.

That’s who you are. You came here today as citizens of 44 different countries, and you’ll leave here as citizens of one great nation -– the United States of America. And I hope that you never take that for granted, because I know how hard you worked for this. You earned it. And to be a citizen of this country is an incredible blessing.

And what I hope you always remember is that, as citizens, we do not shut the doors of opportunity behind us. We preserve the promise of America. We renew it. We extend it so that future generations of Americans -– Americans by birth and “Americans-by-choice” -– can do their part to form the more perfect union that our founders imagined so many years ago.

So I want to once again congratulate you on this important honor, this extraordinary honor. And I wish you the very best of luck on your journey ahead as citizens of this great country.

Thank you so much, and God bless. (Applause.)

IT WAS CHENEY WHO SAID ……

Maybe listening to Dick Cheney on Iraq isn’t a good idea

    By Paul Waldman

    ————————————–

It was Cheney who said in 2005: “I think they’re in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency.”

All those things, and many more, were false. There is not a single person in America — not Bill Kristol, not Paul Wolfowitz, not Don Rumsfeld, no pundit, not even President Bush himself — who has been more wrong and more shamelessly dishonest on the topic of Iraq than Dick Cheney.

And now, as the cascade of misery and death and chaos he did so much to unleash rages anew, Cheney has the unadulterated gall to come before the country and tell us that it’s all someone else’s fault, and if we would only listen to him then we could keep America safe forever. How dumb would we have to be to listen?

Didn’t I tell you guys that chuck Todd can get 41% approval at anytime? It’s the timing of it that’s suspicious. Apparently, they held onto it for a week to ten days.
Also, if 1/3rd of country is 100% against whatever the president says or does, then the polls are automatically tilted right.
Notice, individual polling of midterm candidates immediately favor most democrats?
Also, imbedded in this poll, republican part is at an all time low, just 29% approve. Democrats are also ahead by three in generic matchup.
So, why isn’t that being spread around? Like, GOP is done!!!

Here is a great fable for all the politicians, pundits, radio hosts, and others who preach war but have no skin in the game,

    The Trumpeter Taken Prisoner
A Trumpeter during a battle ventured too near the enemy
and was captured by them. They were about to proceed to
put him to death when he begged them to hear his plea
for mercy. “I do not fight,” said he, “and indeed carry no
weapon; I only blow this trumpet, and surely that cannot
harm you; then why should you kill me?” “You may not
fight yourself,” said the others, “but you encourage and
guide your men to the fight.”
    Words may be deeds

    Jay’s last press briefing!

    What a gentleman!

POTUS has changed my life in ways that I didn’t anticipate. Now I know by names incumbents of most cabinets; I’ve followed world news and US news with appetite so that I could better understand current events. I’ve listened to WH press briefings since January 2009, something I would have never thought of doing prior to President Obama. And yes, I’ve loved every speech or briefing of Tim Geithner, Jay Carney and his predecessor. There is only one person to credit for my conversion: POTUS.

But I will fail in my confession if I omitted to also thank this website and Chipsticks who have kept me informed. The O Diary is where I could come to get news I missed for a day or two. Thank you.
