A Sudanese woman whose death sentence for marrying a Christian was overturned has been released from jail again, after she was detained at Khartoum airport on Tuesday.

Meriam Ibrahim’s lawyer, Muhannad Mustafa, said that she was currently in the US embassy with her family.

Mrs Ibrahim had been detained on charges of falsifying ID documents.

She was first released on 23 June when an appeals court lifted her death sentence for renouncing Islam.

Her sentencing in May to hang for apostasy sparked an outcry at home and around the world.

          And Russia, Ukraine, Africa, etc.

Heard a disturbing thing: The American evangelical whackos and whacko Catholics have gone and filled the vacuum in the former Soviet Union with their brand of right-wing, Taliban-style ‘Christianity’. Hence the gay-hating laws, etc. This is happening worldwide. Sounds like a mild statistic – the fastest growing religion worldwide is Christianity. But they mean this hate-filled excuse for Christianity.

          Good Times!

Amazon accused of ‘bullying’ smaller UK publishers

Amazon is facing a battle with UK publishers as it seeks to secure more advantageous terms in its latest round of contract negotiations.

The web giant wants the right to print books itself if publishers fail to provide adequate stock.

Additionally, it is asking that any pricing deal between publishers and other distributors is also offered to Amazon, so that no-one can undercut it.

Amazon did not reply to the BBC’s request for comment.

One mid-sized firm accused Amazon of “bullying,” and warned that the company was destroying the industry.

Trade magazine the Bookseller was first to report that Amazon had introduced a number of new clauses in its recent contract proposals to independent UK publishers.

    http://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/food-service-company-will-restore-health-coverage-for-campus-workers/80655

The food-service giant Sodexo said on Thursday that it would restore the eligibility of some campus-cafeteria workers to receive coverage under its health-care plan, after bumping the workers from the plan as a response to the federal health-care overhaul, the Associated Press reported.

Sodexo, which operates college cafeterias and provides other campus services, had reclassified some of its workers as part time, a move that affected some 5,000 of its 133,000 American employees, according to the AP.

Sodexo said that it had made the decision to comply with the health-care law. But a spokeswoman for the Treasury Department, which enforces the law’s requirement for employer coverage, said that any employer that eliminated health coverage had done so “by choice, not by requirement.”

    http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/health/264753091.html#L64QE6LB3xRwlHem.97

“We think that overall this is going to result in about the same number of employees being eligible as in the past,” Peterson said. The latest shift grew out of a regular review of company policy, she added.

“We’ve realized we can change the way we are determining eligibility and still remain competitive in the market,” Peterson explained.

Among those who lost their coverage through Sodexo this year was Julie Pemberton, a cashier at Curry College, a liberal arts institution near Boston.

Pemberton puts in more than 40 hours a week during the academic year. She’s paying over $200 a month more in premiums since she switched to a plan from the Massachusetts health insurance exchange.

Funny that they blamed the ACA for “forcing” them to drop coverage. Seems there was some pushback – that the media rarely talks about.

    DON’T SUE, LEGISLATE

    A constitutional crisis

    ———————————–

But there is a message in all this that we shouldn’t completely ignore. Dana Milbank nails it.

But the real problem with the lawsuit approach is that it misunderstands the cause of the problem: congressional dysfunction. Lawmakers, hamstrung by disagreement, have created a power vacuum, and presidents have stepped in to fill it. The solution is not to sue, but to legislate, which means to compromise — and this is something Boehner’s troops have been unwilling to do.

The truth is that we DO have a constitutional crisis. Its just not the one the Republicans are embracing. Jonathan Capehart identifies the origins. He points to the reporting of Michael Grunwald on Republican plans developed in January 2009 to obstruct anything President Obama tried to do.

Radical Muslim preacher Abu Qatada has been found not guilty of terrorism offences by a court in Jordan, over an alleged plot in 1998.

A panel of civilian judges sitting at the State Security Court in Amman cleared him of conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts.

Abu Qatada was deported from the UK in July 2013. A verdict on another alleged plot was adjourned until September.

The Home Office said Abu Qatada would not be able to return to Britain.

This verdict comes after a near decade-long legal battle to force the radical cleric to face trial in his home country, and will raise concerns that he may use his influence to destabilise the Jordanian state at a time of increasing turmoil on its borders.

I do NOT understand why anyone has him talk. He should be blackballed!!!

I see the Boehner gambit of sueing the President as more of the Benghazi hearing strategy. Create political stunts to distract from the record of non-accomplishment, appease and fund raise off the right wing. They will publicize this lawsuit and send out tons of e-mails asking for donations to support their cause of obstruction.

“So Republicans once again create a phony scandal/outrage that gives them something to do without doing something for America. And even Fox and their host Neil Cavuto are fed up with Republicans declaring that the only function of The House is to “fiddle while Rome is burning”, concocting one political attack after another on the Democratic Presidency and accomplishing absolutely nothing else:”

    • June 26, 2014 at 10:51 pm

      From the same article:

“If Democrats make this Republican trashing of The House of Representatives and our democracy a central issue in this years’ elections, backing it also with an agenda of what they would instead accomplish if they won control of The House, they might have a powerful argument. Nationalizing the 2014 elections by saying, “Do you want two more years of Repeal Obamacare votes and more suing and even impeaching of the President…or a functioning House passing bills on jobs, energy, immigration, etc. and moving America forward?”
