A friend of mine has been tutoring a 35 year old man from Latin American for his naturalization exam for over a year now. He came to the US at18, got his green card, learned English, got a job delivering pizza and has dreamed of the day when he could become a citizen.. Well, this week they went together to Philadelphia naturalization center and her student not only aced the exam, he got 100 percent! He was so ecstatic he asked if he could hug the examiner. In one month, he will be called back for his final oath of allegiance. Despite all the ugly stuff the GOP tries to stir up, stories like these make me very proud of this country.

  11. July 11, 2014 at 8:01 am

Are senate Dems really against the President?

    Why?

    • 56 hopefruit2
      July 11, 2014 at 8:17 am

I generally ignore these kinds of articles from the Hill. They put out a lot of garbage about PBO and the Dems in order to deflect attention away from the REAL source of the problem – the HOUSE GOP. I’ve noticed that pattern for a long, long time.

      • July 11, 2014 at 8:32 am

I’ve noticed a slant too, but they quote democrats in article.
I never thought this president had much support from any congress member, bc he doesn’t party with them. Seriously!

        • 58 hopefruit2
          July 11, 2014 at 8:36 am

How many Democrats have they quoted? 1? 2? Anything less than five is not a basis for this article/headline.

          • July 11, 2014 at 8:42 am

I heard Lindsey graham call for funding of the border. Suddenly it’s a bi partisan agreement?
The t baggers ain’t going to allow any funding.
            It’s reality of congress.

        • July 11, 2014 at 9:31 am

Yep. President Obama hasn’t done enough of the “schmoozing” that’s apparently necessary to make them happy. ANother factor at play may be old grudges dating back to the 2008 primaries… Some allies of Hillary and Bill have never given Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt. They’re always quick to question him, and criticize him in front of journalists.

          • July 11, 2014 at 9:35 am

That being said, what Hopefruit2 says makes sense. Journalists can easily find one or two democrats who disagree. You can’t generalize to the whole caucus. Journalists and pundits always generalize to create controversy. That is intellectually fraudulent.

          • July 11, 2014 at 3:00 pm

PBO never really played “The Good Old Boys” games while he was in the Senate or even before. He is political, but does not schmooze or mess around. He is into getting things done cuz it is the right thing to do.

    • July 11, 2014 at 8:31 am

This report is at odds with the one reported yesterday and today by CBS radio news, which said a bi-partisan agreement is being worked out. Apparently the GOP are looking for assurance that these refugees are deported immediately.

      • July 11, 2014 at 8:37 am

Unfortunately no bi partisan agreement. The T baggers in the house veto everything.
        That’s a fact.
Maybe some in senate like graham calls for funding, but not the t baggers in house.
It’s been that way since 2010.

This was from yesterday, but as soon as I saw it just now I thought of DannyO, Chips, and the fox, and I could picture all three needing to cool down after their mad dash. Chips, with DannyO’s help you’ll soon be a couple of sizes smaller than you were when he arrived. Can you afford to lose that much?

  13. July 11, 2014 at 8:12 am

GM and happy Friday to TODville.

    From the article:
In a scathing opinion, Leon County Circuit Judge Terry P. Lewis ruled in Tallahassee that the Legislature’s Republican political consultants had “made a mockery” of the redistricting process, tainting it with “partisan intent.”

Lewis said that the districts, drawn by the Republican-controlled Legislature after the 2010 census, flouted voter-passed constitutional amendments intended to eliminate gerrymandering – that is, often-bizarre and irregular lines that make a district safe for one party or the other.

Morning Arapaho415 and HAPPY FRIDAY to you!

Thank you for posting, this is better news than waiting for LeBron James to decide if he will stay with our Miami Heat team.
The sports world is on hold for one man…….

      • July 11, 2014 at 8:38 am

Happy Friday to you, Cindy (no longer Ycin?).

My twitter timeline was filled with LeBron tweets back when he got an hour (!) of air time to announce he was taking his talents to Miami.

I don’t follow basketball, but I hope he goes back to Cleveland and gives back to the community and becomes a role model for Buckeye youth (sorry, Cindy, I know you’re a Floridian). LeBron is someone who could make a difference with so many young people, and his ties are with Ohio. Hoping he follows Magic Johnson’s footsteps in supporting businesses in neglected areas.

        • 69 Cindy
          July 11, 2014 at 8:56 am

Computer ate up my sign in passwords and everything – Ycin was invented. Out of no where, I was answering a post and my old sign in popped up. I am technologically challenged; can’t begin to explain what happened : )

I felt like LeBron was very disappointed with losing. In several of his interviews, he expressed that he felt like he was the only one wanting a championship. I felt like some discord was definitely going on.

I am sure that he will support the young people and go on to do great things. I am not a basketball fan per se, my take about life in general, do what you have to do if you’re going to be happy doing it.

If he leaves, I wish the best for him and his family. Every organization has to build a team, one person can not do it by themselves, the “team” has to work hard. If he leaves, they have to rebuild and find the great players.

Magic Johnson became an astute businessman and he has helped so many people. That’s what living is really all about; what can I do to reach back and help someone live a better life and achieve their goals? Living is not about the “me” but about helping someone else.

[PBO = president with North Star policies! Here are a couple of long game strategies highlighted by Smartypants - ]

President Obama plays tortoise to the media’s hare. And we know who wins that one!

I’ve often thought that the best metaphor for the Obama presidency is the fable about the tortoise and the hare. Of course – in the role of the hare is our linkbait-obsessed media that runs from one form of hysteria to another in a constant quest for “Obama’s Katrina,” only to tire almost immediately before the story’s conclusion. The role of the tortoise is played by our President, who is always focused on the long game (“slow and steady wins the race”). As FLOTUS once said:

Here’s the thing about my husband: even in the toughest moments, when it seems like all is lost, Barack Obama never loses sight of the end goal. He never lets himself get distracted by the chatter and the noise, even if it comes from some of his best supporters. He just keeps moving forward.

And in those moments when we’re all sweating it, when we’re worried that the bill won’t pass or the negotiation will fall through, Barack always reminds me that we’re playing a long game here. He reminds me that change is slow — it doesn’t happen overnight.

As we approach the finish line, we can begin to see who is going to reach the tape first. Here are some recent “long game” headlines:

        July 11, 2014 at 9:56 am

Jovie, OFA is now a 501-c-4 and not allowed under those rules to participate in partisan campaigns. They are working on issues and in fact, ramping down activity until after the election so we volunteers can take OFF our OFA hats and go volunteer as individuals for candidates. I’ll be helping Senator Merkley’s re-election campaign. It’s very different from the ’08 and ’12 OFA campaigns.

      • 102 Cindy
        July 11, 2014 at 9:17 am

        Happy Friday Carolyn,
        I am so convinced that the main reason, the repukes and MSM want a picture of President Obama at the border, is to place it next to Bush “real” Katrina moment (Bush in plane looking down on those who were suffering), and run with some eye catching headline;

Bush/Obama Katrina moment and they both did nothing.

Of course they would photoshop the picture by inserting crying babies and mothers at the border with the President standing there.

They want to redeem Bush by comparing the President to him; hoping that a picture of President Obama at the border would destroy him.
“AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN” and they are losing their minds because they can’t manipulate him to do it.

        • July 11, 2014 at 10:00 am

“They want to redeem Bush”… THIS.

There’s no question that republicans are never able to deal with not being in power. The minute a democrat ascends to the Oval Office, they begin the campaign to destroy him. Democrats, who are more mature politically, and are not authoritarians, don’t do the same.

But in the case of Barack Obama, we’ve seen the resentment and the hate reach new levels. Race is a factor of course. But another one is that republicans have been SO HUMILIATED by the Bush presidency, they want Bush’s successor to be humiliated to. To leave office with approval numbers as low as Bush’s numbers were. Just so they can comfort themselves in the fact that it’s not just republican presidents who can be rejected by the population.

I’ll go further. I wonder if unconsciously, the pundit class wants the same thing. Let me explain…

They’re so obsessed by the political game, they seem to be totally uninterested by policies and their effects on the american people. They have big salaries and don’t need any help; they absolutely don’t CARE about what happens to people. So the fact that Barack Obama is working to help people DOESN’T IMPRESS them at all. The fact that Barack Obama is working to repair the damage of the Bush years DOESN’T IMPRESS them at all. Since they don’t care, the integrity, empathy, hard work of this president doesn’t generate in them positive sentiments. They judge him, SOLELY, on the way he plays the political game and on the way he interacts with them, the “media stars”. They would like him if he was friendly towards them, if he flattered their egos, if he made them feel important.

So the media class doesn’t like the president. And since they want interesting “narratives”, since they’re entertained by watching a politician’s numbers go up and down, I can’t help feel that deep down inside, they wish they’ll be able to tell the story of a rock-star politician who ascended to the Presidency after an historical, exciting campaign… but left office with as low approval numbers as his republican predecessor.

(And of course, let’s not forget JEALOUSY. They don’t want to feel inferior to this very brilliant president who is , on top of everything, a better WRITER than all of them.)

          • 104 Cindy
            July 11, 2014 at 10:28 am

            You nailed it Lovepolitics2008,

The other side to this ugliness, the raw side of this hate; truth be told – to have a “black man” running this country has rocked their world.

What they are operating from, is the premise of; “Let’s put this N______ in his place.” Nothing else would spew this kind of hatred, than an African American rising to the “TOP.” That is why we have continually heard the words; uppity, arrogant, who does he think he is, cocky etc.

Their behavior reminds me of the scene from Malcolm X, when Malcolm and the people were waiting outside of the hospital, after the police had beaten a black man. When they received word that he was going to live, the Police Chief said; this is too much power for one man to have.

They lost their ruling power to President Obama – so sue him to put him in his place. HA!

Henry Cuellar has been crisscrossing the networks for 2 weeks now, stating that President Obama is detached and should be at the border.
