          Good to go then! :) Tomorrow, when you go out…run it through the car wash. I have to do that myself….we had a big dust storm last week…not good.

            Yup, I’ll run thru the Shell gas station carwash on the way home tomorrow. Dust is our enemy here too. More desert dust than lawn dirt here in Cali too.

                    DF,

                    I’ve lived my entire life in SoCal and I don’t remember hearing about these haboobs until recently (the past few years).

                    Have you spoken to any “oldtimers” in the Phoenix area about such storms during past decades?

                    My family usually went on vacation in August, driving east from San Diego, and I remember only hot days, thunderstorms south of Tucson and flash flooding in New Mexico. Thank goodness we never encountered a haboob, they look terrifying.

                      They ARE terrifying! There is absolutely zero visibility if you get stuck in one. Have to pull way off the road if you can and turn everything off so cars behind you don’t slam into you… I’ve lived here since 2001 and last year, I think we had 5 or 6 of these haboobs…each year seems to be more frequent. We haven’t had measurable rain in 4 months and the desert is parched…any little wind or thunderstorm brewing…and this is what happens in front of the storm. Aside from being an absolute mess on every thing from your house, yard, pool, car, air conditioners, etc…the dirt has spores that can make you very sick with Valley Fever if you breathe it into your lungs. Not good. Not good at all. I need the ocean and a beach.

    Even a total newbie, rooting for Argentina, could see that Germany had the better team. Plus Argentina won their last match in a shootout. A win may be a win but it seems like in any game you need to get the goal, run, basket,puck in the net, etc.
    Germany did that bigtime in their matches and fought hard so hats off and cheers to Germany, congrats!

      How did Obama violate the Constitution? Something which were written by all white men, Obama had the nerve to be a black man who ran for President twice and won. Is that how the racists feel he violated the Constitution?

      What does “Charlie don’t surf” mean?

      • 27 Jennifer (from SM)
        July 13, 2014 at 7:20 pm

        I think it might be a reference to one of the nicknames for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War being “Charlie.” Perry and Hannity are out looking for the “enemy” – these unfortunate children – who aren’t trying to surf their way across the border.

        • July 13, 2014 at 7:31 pm

          That’s the correct context, Jennifer. If you’ve ever seen the movie Apocalypse Now then you’ll remember the brutal assault on a seaside village so that US soldiers could do some surfing. Jeff is really sticking it to Perry and Hannity – both of whom are chickenhawk neoconsters who’ve never served a day in their miserable lives.

    I am sorry to have to say this but the Germany Chancellor is steadily loosing her shine in my eyes;

    I suspect that history will not be kind to her based on the way she sheltered putin during a time when he was determined to instigate the destruction of the world order & manipulate the people of Ukraine into turning on each other;

    at some point one must ask : how valuable are the 30 Pieces of Silver (aka the prosperity of the Germany economy) when compared to protecting lasting humanitarian values;

    may be I am judging her too harshly but I think she is almost loosing her way

  12. July 13, 2014 at 6:51 pm

    Congrats to Germany for being the winner but has people noticed that immigrants children are the bulk of the team, Rightwing nuts in Us want to shot children in the border but other countries though there is still right wing menace still recognize the diversity that help them win the cup. There are people of all faiths represented in that team example Ozil who is Moslem and they still get along as a fine organised team.

    THANK YOU TOD FAMILY FOR YOUR SUPPORT TODAY

    Thank you Don, SUE DUVALL SMITH, mtmarilyn, anniebella, desertflower, 0388jojothecat, otter44, Mighty Pamela, prettyfoot58, and others who may have sent their support. If I missed your name, please charge it to my head and not my heart. I am just so grateful for you; you shared your personal stories, and advice of how to help Anna. I wish I would have shared the situation on Friday, and maybe I would have handled things differently.

    Just to give you an update; she is hospitalized and the husband has been arrested but the Officers informed me that unless she presses charges, they can’t hold him. Apparently when she woke up this morning, he was sitting on her, choking her to death. They fought as she tried to escape, and he held her hostage until she was able to get out of the house. She was trying to get help before I heard the screams but the neighbors would not open their doors. She thought that I was in church today and bypassed me.

    The residents on my floor are from Argentina, Venezuela, Israel, New York and Chicago, only 3 or 4, including myself, are full-time residents. However; several were home but too frighten to open the door.
    I opened my door, scared and frighten but those screams were too unbearable to ignore. The police are staying here all week, stationed on my floor, in the lobby, and in the parking lot, just in case. I was informed that they reached the parents in Brazil, and they are leaving as soon as possible. My heart breaks; knowing that they have to see their baby in this horrible condition. No matter how old our kids are, they are “our babies” forever.

    He tried to kill her this morning, and luckily she fought back. When they lived in Brazil, he was verbally abusive but not physical because she was there with family. The physical abuse started when they moved here and it escalated. Unknown to me, the police had been involved before when the guy punched her in the eye and I found out today that she didn’t press charges. So this horrible abuse was taking place under my noise and I didn’t know it. My teaching schedule is hectic so my hours are crazy between teaching and tutoring, so I never suspected anything when I would see them on the weekend.

    Thank you again TOD. I have been traumatized through all of this and heartbroken; can’t imagine seeing my child beaten to a bloody mess, and these parents are on their way to see their daughter. The Officers stayed with me for awhile and the EMT checked my pressure for cautionary measures.

    When I wrote the prayer this morning, if you read it (R and S), it was because my heart was so heavy. I felt in my heart that this young lady was in danger and I was helpless, not knowing that there was going to be an explosion.

    If anyone was feeling down this morning, I wanted to lift you up through my prayer because I kept thinking; people everywhere are hurting, and feel that no one cares. So many things cost $$$$ but kindness is free when we freely give it.

    Wishing everyone a very blessed week, and a safe week, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
    Warmest Blessings
    Cindy

      {{{{Cindy}}}} {{{Anna}}} Thank you for letting us know what happened. I pray that this time, she has the strength to do what’s right and press charges. He is a monster as far as I’m concerned and they need to lock him up and throw the key away. Full stop.

      She was lucky that you are the person you are and that you were home. This goes on all over the world…yes, there IS a War on Women….. we have more strength than we know…together. I will think of both of you tonight and pray that she finally can save herself.

    • July 13, 2014 at 7:27 pm

      So sorry to read of your horrible experience. Kindness is free and the greatest gift anyone can give to another. Sending lots your way. Take care of that very warm and loving heart of yours.

      Cindy, thank you for this update, know that we will continue sending you our prayers and thoughts for you and for Anna. There are so many who are thru such horrid times. We are being taught nowadays not to get involved. We must be careful but we must care for our neighbors. I also hope you have support there from friends who will be there for you too. We are here, but you need support there too just like Anna. Thank you for being the caring person you are.

      Cindy, thank you for the update, and for your kindness in helping your poor neighbor. I hope she can finally press charges and find some peace and support through her family.

    • July 13, 2014 at 8:34 pm

      Dearest Cindy,

      Thank you for letting us know that your neighbor is safe in the hospital getting the care she needs and her family is on their way. I pray that she presses charges. I am surprised that they would not keep him for assault that she HAS to file charges. That is the one good thing that came out of the OJ Trial in SoCal. The law has taken the onerous from the victim of DV and placed it on the attacker when there is clearly physical evidence of abuse. All states should have this law that when police come and see that there is physical abuse the attacker is arrested for assault and is held based on the officer and witnesses testimony. We continue to pray for you, lifting you and your neighbor up with our prayers.

      Cindy, sorry to hear about your experience with domestic violence earlier today – I had missed the comments the first and I had to go back and read your account;

      thanks a lot for helping out your neighbor, Ms Ana;

      I don’t know if your shock and pain on her behalf has subsided enough for you to consider these other two issues:

      (a) If the abused young lady decides to press charges on her husband, will you choose testify about what you know?
      no pressure but if you choose to do so then this may give her strength to face him in court and get the justice she is due. it may also help you to deal with the feelings of “what if” that you expressed earlier;

      (b) it is possible that one reason that the young lady did not file charges is because of their current immigration status.

      If you get a chance to speak to her, please let her know that recent modifications in immigration law have a special provision to protect victims of domestic abuse.

      these modifications in law were made because immigrant victims were scared to report abuse from spouses – especially in those cases where they undocumented or the abuser still believed in home-country cultural norms that regarded women as “the property” of the husband;

      Under the current immigration law, proof that you’ve been the victim of domestic abuse while on US soil will automatically make you qualify for special resources up to and including: legal representation, housing, economic support etc and even including a chance to modify your immigration status. resources would be provided to enable the victim to start over independent of her/his abuser

      please advise her to seek help from a qualified immigrant rights professional;

      I also know that under this modification in law, an immigrant spouse who commits domestic abuse will most likely serve time in the slammer, lose his/her status and be promptly deported

    SAN FERNANDO, Calif.—The Oscar-nominated designers at Legacy Effects have outfitted such memorable movie warriors as The Terminator, RoboCop, Captain America and Iron Man.

    The special-effects company is now at work on what seems a mission impossible: Building an Iron Man-style suit to protect and propel elite U.S. troops by encasing them in body armor equipped with an agile exoskeleton to enable troops to carry hundreds of pounds of gear. The 3-D printers that once churned out parts for actor Robert Downey Jr.’s red and gold movie armor are making pieces for a Pentagon prototype. Military officials recently examined three designs, an early step in a project by the U.S. Special Operations Command to create a new generation of protective armor within the next four years.

    “We are trying to be revolutionary,” said Mike Fieldson, the military’s manager of the project known as TALOS, the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit. Joining the quest is a far-flung team of bioengineers, combat veterans, tech experts and a Canadian researcher seeking solutions from the secrets of insect armor……continued

      Weapons and armaments. What we will need with widespread drought and a heavily armed populace. Glad I am old and will be gone when the US goes entirely sour.

      Eff this.. Always war, war, war. How about solar roadways, how about desalination of seawater, shutting down fracking, electric trains and cars, solar homes, reforestation, cars that run on hydrogen.. The list goes on and on. So much spent always to perpetuate war, war, war. I am weary of all this. It’s still only the wealthy and the shadow government, the MIC who benefit, it’s still the poor and desperate who die, fancy protective gear, or not
