President Barack Obama speaks about transportation and an initiative to increase private sector investment in national infrastructure, at the Port of Wilmington in Wilmington, Delaware, near the Interstate 495 Bridge. The federal government is helping pay for repairs to the bridge, which state officials ordered closed on an emergency basis last month because several supporting columns were tilting.

White House: Fact Sheet: Building A 21st Century Infrastructure: Increasing Public And Private Collaboration With The Build America Investment Initiative

Today, the President will deliver remarks at the Port of Wilmington in front of the I-495 Bridge in Delaware. With 90,000 cars moving over it per day before repairs began, this bridge is a key example of the importance of infrastructure, which keeps the economy moving, spurs innovation, and bolsters our national competitiveness. At the port – and in this Year of Action – the President will announce a new executive action to create the Build America Investment Initiative, a government-wide initiative to increase infrastructure investment and economic growth. As part of the Initiative, the Administration is launching the Build America Transportation Investment Center – housed at the Department of Transportation – to serve as a one-stop shop for cities and states seeking to use innovative financing and partnerships with the private sector to support transportation infrastructure.

That is why today, the President will sign a Presidential Memorandum to launch the Build America Investment Initiative, a government-wide initiative to increase infrastructure investment and economic growth by engaging with state and local governments and private sector investors to encourage collaboration, expand the market for public-private partnerships (PPPs) and put federal credit programs to greater use. Starting with the transportation sector, this initiative will harness the potential of private capital to complement government funding. As part of the Initiative, the Administration is launching the Build America Transportation Investment Center: Housed at the Department of Transportation, this center will serve as a one-stop shop for state and local governments, public and private developers and investors seeking to utilize innovative financing strategies for transportation infrastructure projects.

        She has had some memorable comments and tweets today – TOD is still my news source for the world. CNN must be having a nightmare of a time trying to decide between 24 hour coverage of MH17 or 24 hour coverage of war.

        Guess it takes the conversation away from the stupid of the GOP – for all the wrong reasons. Malaysian airlines has been one of the main flight choices of Australians – hard to believe this has happened again – makes one wonder about the fate of the still missing flight.

      This former CNN Senior Middle East News Editor, Octavia Nasr was fired for a tweet in 2010: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/07/AR2010070704948.html

      “Nasr later said in a blog that she had been referring to Fadlallah’s attitude toward women’s rights. The cleric had issued edicts banning “honor killing” of women and giving women the right to hit their husbands if attacked first.”

      http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0710/39498.html

      ….Marc Lynch, an associate professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University and a blogger at Foreign Policy’s website, tweeted: “I’d threaten to stop watching CNN if I ever watched CNN, but sadly CNN’s programming put an end to that long ago.” His colleague at FP, Harvard professor Stephen Walt, called CNN’s decision “spineless.” But the firing provoked perhaps the strongest reaction from Arab-Americans.

      “This is unbelievable what is happening in the United States of America,” said Osama Siblani, publisher of the Arab American News. “You can say anything you want — except when it comes to Israel.” He accused CNN of a double standard, citing what he said was CNN host Wolf Blitzer’s history of working for the Jerusalem Post and for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). “But for Octavia Nasr to make a statement that’s in agreement with millions of people around the world, has become a firing offense at CNN. It’s incredible the level we have sunk to.”…

    Re the shooting down of the plane.
    I don’t want to do idle conjecture, but…
    Is it just a coincidence that this happens the day after PBO announces new and stricter sanctions against Russia and Putin says the West will pay for doing so?

    Regarding Gaza, the Israeli actions are fully justified if you use a basic mathematical equation:
    1 Israeli is the equivalent of a couple thousand Palestinians.

    • 44 EricFive
      July 17, 2014 at 7:27 pm

      I honestly think Putin has lost his mind. Shortly after the original invasion, Merkel can away from a conversation with Putin saying “he has lost touch with reality”. This is a very dangerous situation and Putin may soon be deemed too much of a loose canon to remain in control of a nuclear arsenal.

      July 17, 2014 at 7:49 pm

      I saw Patrick Murphy say the exact same thing about this terrible tragedy happening the day after new sanctions. He seemed to be sure that this was what happened, that the sanctions were the catalyst.

    Instead of using Biden’s presence as an inspiration and motivation to brainstorm for the general progressive agenda and the upcoming midterms, she’s shamefully and disingenuously attacking our President (who also happens to Biden’s close friend and ally), under the guise of praising Biden. And this is an example of why the GOP has managed to get away with outrageous things and progressives LOSE all the time. Because people who are so-called on our side spend way too much time and energy attacking the one person who has been most effective in accomplishing the goals of the progressive agenda and already has done so much for this country, and who continues to do so much with so much on his plate.

      July 17, 2014 at 7:22 pm

      Probably just wants to be the center of attention – good or bad – netroots rather overtaken by international events – stupid and sad that they have to attack PBO for no valid reason (other than Presidenting while black – which seems to be the main take-out from her tweet)

    Interesting to me that in the past 70 years, whenever the western world tries to impose territorial solutions on fighting factions – it has not led to lasting peace. Some people seem to think the have the intelligence/right? to solve issues that they will never understand in 100 years.

    We are all so lucky that PBO was elected 2008/12 – the thought of McCain or Romney facing these issues is horrific

    I think PBO loves being around ordinary people. I think it energizes him and reminds him of the immense impact his decisions have on ordinary people around the world. It keeps PBO connected to the real world and not isolated and out of touch (a problem that has plague many if not all previous Presidents). Today has been a hellishly crazy day. Evil people are doing evil things. May GOD continue to Bless PBO and give him the wisdom and strength to get us through this madness. It is an absolute shame that the GOP/MSM don’t give a damn about this country so PBO will once again have to shoulder these many burdens by himself. PBO has my full support and undying gratitude.

    I don’t watch the news because most of the time its all about horror and mayhem, rarely is there anything broadcast that is uplifting, like our President’s speeches. So how did I hear about the Malaysian jetliner crash? On Facebook! My refuge for uplifting stories and positive affirmations. At first I thought the story would be about the finding of the missing Malaysian, when to my horror, I find out it is about a different aircraft, filled with civilians, presumably SHOT out of the air on this very day. I had a physical reaction to this news, and I realized that listening to the news is BAD FOR MY HEALTH! Physically and psychically. I pray for the crash victims, I pray for the young boys killed while playing football in the streets, I pray for the murder victims of gun violence, I pray for the refugee children. I pray that as human beings we could all get along, show each other compassion, and live together in peace and harmony…..

      In spite of the news today Elle, I hope that your evening will give you some joy; your heart is heavy as many have expressed the same today. I feel crushed under the weight of the world, and can only imagine what President Obama is feeling, knowing that we all have limitations to solving the challenges that are present.

      We live in a world of chaos that knows no boundaries; hearts are heavy because we are created with passion, humility, humbleness, love and even the ability to believe in what we can not see.

      The world is a place filled with hate, meanness, ugliness, hurt, pain and suffering, and as humans, we are not always able to correct the wrong that is placed before us.

      It is in this moment that I remember;
      *****************************************
      The Serenity Prayer

      God grant me the serenity
      to accept the things I cannot change;
      courage to change the things I can;
      and wisdom to know the difference.

      Living one day at a time;
      Enjoying one moment at a time;
      Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
      Taking, as He did, this sinful world
      as it is, not as I would have it;

      Trusting that He will make all things right
      if I surrender to His Will;
      That I may be reasonably happy in this life
      and supremely happy with Him
      Forever in the next.
      Amen.

    …As reported by Roll Call’s Five by Five, U.N. International Civil Aviation Organization, which investigated the 1983 shoot-down of a Korean Air Lines flight, has a nominee awaiting Senate confirmation. Michael A. Lawson has been pending on the Senate’s executive calendar since May 20, following Foreign Relations Committee action. Five by Five reported that Lawson has faced scrutiny over his campaign donations to President Barack Obama. Majority Leader Harry Reid has begun regular complaints about delays in confirming the backlog of State Department nominations. Absent consent agreements, the Nevada Democrat could spend days and hours working through the nominations, but each position would take significant post-cloture debate time.

    “Right now, there are gaping holes in our nation’s front lines. American embassies all over the world are without their leaders. A quarter of all American embassies are without an ambassador. Senate Republicans, who have been so quick to accuse this administration of poor leadership on world issues, are obstructing the confirmation of ambassadors who are desperately needed at embassies around the world,” Reid said Thursday. “Republicans are abdicating the Senate’s constitutional role to confirm ambassadors.”…

    So pathetic: Updated 6:59 p.m. | The Senate is set to confirm a new U.S. ambassador to an international body that’s been responsible for investigating airplane crashes such as Malaysia Airlines MH17. Roll Call reported on the vacancy earlier Thursday, and now the Senate has reached an agreement for a Monday evening vote on confirmation. That’s as the crash of the Malaysia Airlines flight in Eastern Ukraine reported to have had Americans on board may require an independent investigation.

    It’s still being reported that 23 US citizens were aboard MH17 & 38 Malaysians, not 23 …

    “Six Britons, 23 US citizens and 80 children are reported to be among those killed when a passenger jet crashed over the eastern Ukraine border amid claim and counter-claim that it was shot down by a missile.

    Pictures and video from the scene showed bodies strewn around the site of the crash amid the charred wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which fell down near the town of Grabovo, about 50km from the Russia-Ukraine border, while 280 passengers and 15 crew members were on board.

    The passengers on the flight included 154 Dutch, 27 Australians, 38 Malaysians – including 15 crew -, 11 people from Indonesia, four Germans, four Belgians, three from the Philippines and one Canadian, BBC News reported an airport official as having said. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said 23 US citizens were travelling on the aircraft. The nationalities of the remaining passengers were still being confirmed. 80 children were also on board, according to various agencies reporting from the scene.”

        Thanks hf2. What I’ve noticed in certain reports is that the “Unverified #” fluctuates depending on whether 23 Americans are included in the list. Malaysia Airlines is generating a lot of anger by not releasing the manifest. A Chinese language news source has already named the members of the MH17 crew.

          Not sure, Vicki. Both US and UK news outlets have reported that 23 US Citizens were on board. • July 17, 2014 at 8:12 pm

      Actually Vicki, the Russian dudes who did the shooting thought they were firing at a UA military transport plane. The phone intercepts that have been released by the UA confirm that to be the case. It doesn’t, in any way, change the fact that Russians are operating sophisticated SAM systems in defiance of international law, just as their occupation of parts of UA are acts of war.

    I think Bob posted some of this earlier – but I’m just reading it in my world

    Ukraine’s Kyiv Post newspaper has posted what it says is the transcript of a conversation between a separatist commander and a Russian intelligence officer.
    ………

    The paper also posted part of a third conversation between “Cossack” commander Nikolay Kozitsin and an unidentified militant.
    “Regarding the plane shot down in the area of Snizhne-Torez. It’s a civilian one. Fell down near Grabove,” the militant said.
    “There are lots of corpses of women and children. The Cossacks are out there looking at all this.
    “They say on TV it’s AN-26 transport plane, but they say it’s written Malaysia Airlines on the plane. What was it doing on Ukraine’s territory?”
    Kozitsin replied: “That means they were carrying spies. They shouldn’t be f….ing flying. There is a war going on.”
