President Obama turns 53 years old on Monday, and celebrates in part with a light public schedule.

Obama, born Aug. 4, 1961, has a string of meetings with aides throughout the day.

The economy will be the major topic when the president sits down in the afternoon with Treasury Secretary Jack Lew.

BBC: Gaza conflict: Israeli partial ceasefire under way

A seven-hour “humanitarian window” announced by Israel is under way in parts of Gaza.

Israel said the truce would not apply to Rafah in the south and its troops would respond if they were attacked.

Palestinian officials have accused Israel of breaking the truce with a strike on a house in Gaza City.

In Jerusalem, Israeli media said a Palestinian construction vehicle driver was shot dead after an attack on a bus that killed an Israeli passer-by.

The Israeli truce comes after an attack near a UN-run school in Gaza on Sunday that sparked international outrage. Palestinian officials said at least 10 people died.

SFGate: House panel: No administration wrongdoing in Benghazi attack

The House Intelligence Committee, led by Republicans, has concluded that there was no deliberate wrongdoing by the Obama administration in the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, said Rep. Mike Thompson of St. Helena, the second-ranking Democrat on the committee.

The panel voted Thursday to declassify the report, the result of two years of investigation by the committee. U.S. intelligence agencies will have to approve making the report public.

Thompson said the report “confirms that no one was deliberately misled, no military assets were withheld and no stand-down order (to U.S. forces) was given.”

Steve Benen: The House GOP’s immigration plan: ‘Deport ‘em all’

For two years, House Republicans have been under pressure to tackle legislation related to immigration. Late Friday night, the wait ended – the GOP majority finally held votes on the issue.

They just weren’t the vote the American mainstream had in mind.

Early in July, many congressional Republicans actually intended to approve President Obama’s plan to address the humanitarian crisis at the U.S./Mexico border. But the GOP’s posture kept shifting – from amending to Obama’s plan, to destroying it, to passing a far-right proposal that wasn’t considered extreme enough, to Friday night’s sad theatrics.

WH.gov: U.S. Africa Leaders Summit

President Obama in August will welcome leaders from across the African continent to the Nation’s Capital for a three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the first such event of its kind. This Summit, the largest event any U.S. President has held with African heads of state and government, will build on the President’s trip to Africa in the summer of 2013 and it will strengthen ties between the United States and one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions. Specifically, the August 4-6 Summit will advance the Administration’s focus on trade and investment in Africa and highlight America’s commitment to Africa’s security, its democratic development, and its people. At the same time, it will highlight the depth and breadth of the United States’ commitment to the African continent, advance our shared priorities and enable discussion of concrete ideas to deepen the partnership. At its core, this Summit is about fostering stronger ties between the United States and Africa.

If only 3% think Congress is productive then why don’t they vote their butts out of office. Or why don’t they contact Congress and tell them that we want Congress to work with the WH to get matters solve. Instead we sit back with our mouth shut and let the loud mouth extreme racists haters do the talking. Those are the ones who have taken over the Republicans Party..

Love the pic of @VP and cake crumbs — those are mighty big crumbs, looks like something I would have dropped from my plate (since I’m pretty klutzy).

And the fishing rod pic — if Brian Schweitzer hasn’t turned out to be such a self-serving PUMA (?) I was hoping that PBO could vacation in Montana to have quality time testing out that pole. His girls would probably be bored, but Montana is such a gorgeous state, what could be better than fly fishing in August?

Actually, upon clicking on the hashtag itself, I see that I was not completely off-base. There is a lot of RW trolling going on. But the good news is that the best the trolls can come up with are photoshopped (mostly racist/misogynistic) images and other childish crap.

What we’re left with is a major political party that’s defined itself as aggressively anti-immigrant, just three months before the midterm elections.

Will voters care? There’s a school of thought that says public ignorance is so pervasive that congressional failures are irrelevant – voters don’t really understand the policymaking process; they have no idea who’s in charge of what in Congress; and so the president invariably gets blamed for everything, including the GOP’s crushing incompetence and extremism. By this reasoning, Republicans might even be rewarded for failing so miserably because so much of the public will hold Obama responsible for reasons that don’t make any factual sense.

There is some snark, here and there in this Wash Post article, but I was more interested in reading about some of PBO’s gifts that will be in his library/museum later.

One of the nice things about being the most powerful person in the world is that people give you presents. It’s unlikely that gifts from foreign countries do much to sway American diplomacy, but foreign visitors bestowing cumbersome or weird gifts is almost certainly one of the more entertaining parts of President Obama’s job. He doesn’t get to keep the gifts, mind you; they’re usually spirited away by the National Archives and Records Administration. But imagine someone showing up and handing you a four-by-five-foot rug with your own face on it, as Russia did in 2009. That’s good stuff.

On the occasion of Barack Obama’s 53rd birthday, we decided to review each and every one of the 274 gifts given to the president between 2009 and 2012 by foreign countries and their leaders. (Gifts like the blanket in the image above aren’t included, but 13 other blankets from other countries are.) The lists are maintained by the State Department’s Protocol Gift Unit, which has not yet released the 2013 gift list. So we used what we had, breaking each gift down by donor, by value, and, yes, by quality, ranking them all on a scale from 1 to 100 and sorting them. (The full list is at the bottom of this post.)
    ………………….

To cut to the chase: Here are the top- and lowest-rated items on the lengthy list. We will admit some prejudices: electronics were rated poorly, generic furnishings were given middle-of-the-pack ratings, and things involving dogs were rated well. (Disagree? Click here.) And so:

    THE FIVE BEST
    1. A five-inch Aztec calendar in silver, given by Mexico in 2012.
Mexico is very good at giving gifts, as it turns out. Why did this particular gift earn top marks? Because: 1. Aztec calendars are cool. 2. A five-inch silver piece is not chintzy. 3. They gave this in 2012, when the world was at peak end-of-the-world mania. This gift was on-trend. Nicely done, Mexico.
    ……………………

    4. Four bottles of tequila and a silver ark in a trunk, from Mexico in 2009.
Four bottles of tequila. That is a good gift. If you’re curious what happened to the booze, the State Department offers a hint: “Perishable Items Handled Pursuant to U.S. Secret Service Policy.” Presumably meaning like this.

    5. A stainless steel watch, a brooch, and a ceramic dog bowl from the Czech Republic in 2009.
The Czech Republic got a gift for Bo. It wasn’t the only country to do so, but that is adorable.

    …………………….//

The reality is that doing anything about anything is 1) costly and 2) inconvenient for a lot of people.

Of course, doing something now when interest rates are low for the government costs less in the long term than waiting when more will need to be done and the costs are higher.

And being inconvenienced a little now is a lot better than being inconvenienced a lot later on, specially if that inconvenience results in death.

But people seem to think more in terms of the present than the future. A lot of people talk about the next generation and the debt we are leaving them. They forget that what we are really leaving them if we do nothing is a world with unbreathable air, undrinkable water, a crumbling and unsafe infrastructure and increased chances of war over all three.
