Chgo news just reported that “hundreds protest Iraq bombing in Federal Plaza” as overhead helicopter shot revealed maybe 20 people there. Whoops. In the meantime—–traffic jammed as thousands try to get to the Bears 1st preseason game at Soldier Field tonight. Priorities.

    Great info NW!

I like the tweet from kara vallow “Republicans want to “sue” the Prez because they don’t have the balls to say “lynch.” – so true! hahahaha!!!

LL…..I just read your excellent editorial. You have the clearest way of connecting all the pertinent factors and making sense, and enabling understanding. Thank you.

For you and Bob, and everyone on the blog following Ukraine and Russia: Last night I got a book from the LIBRARY entltled, “The Last Empire: The final days of the Soviet Union.” by Serhii Plokhy. I have read only the intro and part of chapter one, but it is a brand new analysis of the end of the Soviet Union and how it came about, using newly released material from the GHWBush library, Sec Baker’s private papers from Princeton, and interviews with leaders of the former Soviet Republics and more. His major thesis is that “the key American role in the demise of the Soviet Union is a myth, and this misplaced belief has guided—and haunted—American foreign policy ever since.” He contends that Ukraine’s strength was a big part of the break up, and Russia could not control it.
Your statement about Cheney and his desire for a new American empire reminded me of this book.
The author is the professor of Ukrainian history and director of the Ukrainian Research at Harvard.

    • August 8, 2014 at 6:28 pm

      thank you, carolyn!

Niall Ferguson, that odious man, wrote a think piece soon after the Iraq invasion urging the US to embrace empire. Considering that he’s a “historian”, he should know that it never ends well for empires. They fall sooner or later.

    • August 8, 2014 at 7:10 pm

Thank you Carolyn. Professor Plokhy’s thesis is valid and Putin knows it. Fortunately, so do President Obama, Ambassador Rice, SOS Kerry and others. Ukraine is the pivot and Ukrainians, the vast majority of them, are willing to die before ever pivoting in Putin’s direction. They are done with that deal – not merely a couple of decades ago, but because of the centuries of murderous oppression from the dudes to north and east of them.

Hoooooooooooooome. And having Trader Joe’s beef mini tacos. Yum.

Hi LL, I keep missing you, so I’m re-posting my comment to you on this thread (hope you’ll catch it while your glass is chilling ;-))

              Another wonderful post by LL!

LL, I think you are off running errands right now, but in case you read this later, just wanted to also compliment you on your post from a couple of days ago, “annals in ‘missing the point’” You were spot-on! I’ll never forget when PBO made his speech about how it was time to move on from the “War on Terror” thinking, take another look at the Patriot Act practices (and this was BEFORE Snowden and GG began their big “look at me” stunt), scale back the MIC, etc. He was in the middle of urging Congress to let him close Guantanamo (AGAIN) and the code pink lady started yelling and interrupting him; she wasn’t even paying attention to the fact that he was on her side!

              Loved this in your piece:
“Too often on the Left people have an image of Barack Obama as Rush Limbaugh’s “Barack the Magic Negro”: he’ll come in waving his hands and make everything better! And when they’re brought back to reality that politics is hard, dirty work, and nothing is guaranteed, the yelling commences, in expectation that by harrangues the Overton Window will magically move leftwards. The fact is that his voters were unsatisfied with his progress up to 2010, or were lured by the siren song of the Tea Party, and by not turning out to vote—”We voted in 2008! That’s all we thought we had to do!”—were responsible for the dysfunction in our politics since then.”

              Amen! Thanks LL!

              P.S. Your doggie is adorable!

              • August 8, 2014 at 6:49 pm

                Thank you, soph!

And our “adorable” dog decided to go poo and pee on our kitchen floor while we were out. Then he gives us this “who, me?” look. And he’s adorable again.

At least Stewie chose an easy-to-clean surface. I can’t understand why my kitties insist on barfing up their hairballs on furniture, bed and rugs instead of the tile or wood floor!

                  • August 8, 2014 at 7:57 pm

Ah, MadameSoph, I can help you here: kitties need traction to toss hairballs, some of those buggers are mean and wrapped up tight in the tummy! A bare, slippery floor would not provide the stability. IMHO.

Good point, MightyPamela, however, my floors are too old to be slippery – plenty of traction there :-)

Have you ever seen that ecard that says: I’m having fruit salad for dinner. Well, mostly grapes actually. Ok, all grapes. Fermented grapes. Ok, I’m having wine for dinner.

Do this now, Chips. Don’t even feed whatever this is to Danny. He will bite you.

        • August 8, 2014 at 6:43 pm

Chips is probably a world-famous food stylist in her day job, she just posts nauseating food pics to throw us off course, LOL.

I cannot share the lament of first tweet. Don’t want open carry for white people, black people, any people. As we see daily, too many people, of all shades, have too much ready access to loaded guns. 10,000 kids killed/wounded by guns every year now, for instance. A shameful, damaging disgrace.

    • 55 Sandy1110
      August 8, 2014 at 8:05 pm

      I can. The message is:

White people can wave big-ass REAL guns around anytime, anywhere.
Black people get shot holding toys.

White privilege and white fright all in one ugly, nasty package.

        August 8, 2014 at 10:48 pm

        Thank you, Sandy.

You perfectly explained it. Anyone who doesn’t see the truth of the tweet is being willfully ignorant.

    • 57 Nerdy Wonka
      August 8, 2014 at 10:51 pm

You can’t share the lament because you’re white and not a Black person walking in a Black person’s skin in a majority white country.

White people can carry all sorts of guns and no one blinks but let a Black person do the same, the entire neighborhood calls 911 before one can say Jack.

That is the reality Black people live with.

  11. August 8, 2014 at 6:28 pm

    WOW, this is so important:

    • August 8, 2014 at 6:38 pm

      Yes!

      Was this an executive order?

I feel shame as a country when I hear how we abandon people such as translators in places like Afghanistan — if we go into another country and don’t speak their language, the very least we can do is ensure safe passage for these courageous people and their families. Kind of like the witness protection program, only from an international perspective.

    Nerdy Wonka,

Since you do such a good job highlighting all the good ACA news, I thought you would appreciate this:

I got my first “Explanation of Benefits” from my new insurance company that I signed up with through CoveredCA in January. I nervously opened the envelope, half expecting the same old numbers from my old, pre-ACA, high-deductible insurance plan.

My office visit was $135.00 and the amount listed under “Patient Responsibility” was ……. $3.00!

    I love my President!

SPEAKING of national treasures…Stephen Colbert…OMG. Hilarious!

“finally a truly strong leader has stepped up to punish Russia and, no surprise, it’s Vladimir Putin”

      In tears – the man’s a genius!!!

      • August 8, 2014 at 7:07 pm

He and John Oliver put their mentor Jon Stewart to regular shame. I hope Colber’s replacement will continue the tradition.

Agreed, LL! Stewart has NOTHING on either of them.

          August 8, 2014 at 7:24 pm

I gave up on Stewart long ago. The Daily show saved me during the Bush/Cheney years, but not long after PBO got elected, he just started phoning it in and criticizing PBO on things that he obviously hadn’t even researched, just watched on FOX and believed. I’ll never forgive that travesty of a rally he had in 2010 where he didn’t even tell people to go vote.

Colbert, on the other hand, is a treasure and he has a good heart. He’s been on fire this week. Did you see the throwback episode on the Nixon resignation?

So happy he’s taking over the Late Show!

          • August 8, 2014 at 7:43 pm

            Agree so much, MadameSoph.

Colbert comes across as a *genuinely* nice guy, similar to our President, Barack Obama.

Loved the segment when he had Rep. John Lewis on and told Rep Lewis that he (Colbert) attended the MLK “I Have A Dream Speech” — in his mother’s womb. He showed Rep. Lewis a banner from that day, and Rep. Lewis looked like he was tearing up.

Colbert pokes fun of people, but not in a mean, snarly way.

Love him — and always had a soft spot for John Oliver as well — love to see Brits who can make fun of themselves.

Agree Arapaho! I watched the Daily Show when John Oliver took over. As soon as Stewart returned, went back to Colbert only :-)

I know PBO and FLOTUS know who is on the side of good. Stephen got to sit next to FLOTUS at the French state dinner!

Andrea Mitchell always gets over-exuberant when she has an opportunity to criticize PBO on foreign policy. She has made herself available for condemnation on every msnbc program. I heard earlier she referred to PBO as “this guy”, and I just heard her say, in a disparaging tone “this president”, which I have noticed with other haughty know-nothing anchrors/pundits. I heard Norah O’Donnell on Letterman the other night say “this president” in that same mocking tone about 15 times, with all kinds of her most “expert” advice on what “this president” “needs to do”. It’s like they all need to pass some kind of criticism test of “this president” or they won’t win the respect of their peers.

Okay. LL loves to share his menus so I’m going to do that tonight. I had been craving a hamburger all week. Sooooo, grilled a Trader Joe’s non-GMO burger–and did it to perfection :) (Got it off the grill before a down pour). Sweet, tender corn-on-the-cob (non-GMO TJ’), roasted green beans (leftover), sliced cucumber. Oh, had homemade herbed butter on the corn. :) Later will have the last serving of fresh blackberry cobbler. (Served that Sunday night for my Life Group meeting.) I didn’t pick the blackberries. A friend did.

I love to cook and will say I do cook for myself when my hiker hubby is gone. Still eat healthy too!!!
