Reuters: New Medicaid enrollments top 7 million under Obamacare

More than seven million Americans have gained health coverage through government programs including Medicaid since enrollment in Obamacare health insurance was launched October 1, the U.S. administration said on Friday.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said 7.2 million new participants in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program by June brought overall Medicaid enrollment to 66 million people.

The enrollees include uninsured Americans who gained coverage through traditional Medicaid, as well as a special Medicaid expansion in 26 of the 50 U.S. states under President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

…. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine estimated that 10.3 million uninsured Americans have gained coverage through the marketplaces and Medicaid, resulting in a 5.2 percentage point drop in the U.S. uninsured rate since last September.

Chips, can I ask a gentle favor for the next thread? Bob has posted a series of tweets featuring positive responses to our President’s recent authorizations in Iraq, and the ongoing processes in Afghanistan and elsewhere…could you (or Nerdy) front-page those tweets? Merci beaucoup!

Perfect example of who I was referring to in my earlier tweet. These same people complained we were going to get bogged down in Libya and Syria, not believing what PBO said about the exact opposite happening. They still don’t understand he means what he says.

      • August 8, 2014 at 12:28 pm

They also can’t be bothered to actually listen to what he has to say. It is just constant disrespect and lack of basic courtesy.

You’re right MomSense. They got their “think”pieces written up well before he speaks; they don’t listen to his speeches and instead engage in childish mockery on Twitter while he’s speaking.

In the United States, new parents aren’t guaranteed any paid time off. Instead, if they have worked for a certain amount of time at a company with 50 or more employees, they are guaranteed the ability to take 12 unpaid weeks off for the arrival of a new child.
That leaves us in lonely company. Out of 185 countries, the United States is one of just three that doesn’t guarantee paid maternity leave, the others being Oman and Papua New Guinea. Over half of the countries that provide leave give at least 14 weeks off. Here’s how that stacks up to other countries around the globe:

Fathers are similarly not guaranteed paid time off for a new child in the United States, but 70 countries also offer paid paternity leave. In the U.S., just 12 percent of workers have access to paid family leave through their employers. Worse, less than half of all workers are covered by unpaid leave, giving them few options when they have a new child. A quarter of women either quit their jobs or are let go when a new child arrives, and of those who get only partial pay or nothing at all, a third borrow money and/or dip into savings while 15 percent go on public assistance…continued

Michigan Republican Gov has the gall to lump all of “Washington” together in his complaint about the lack of money for the repairs on the bridge. Grrrr!

U.S. needs to step up on Detroit-Windsor bridge project: Gov.
Posted on July 31, 2014 by Admin
OTTAWA – Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said Wednesday the U.S. “needs to do a better job” on the Detroit-Windsor bridge, a project that’s been in the works for more than a decade.

Proposed back in 2002, the bridge is needed to facilitate trade between the U.S. and Canada – the largest trading partners in the world – but that’s been mired in controversy and setbacks since the beginning.

Snyder was joined by Transport Minister Lisa Raitt Wednesday for the joint announcement of a review panel, appointed to oversee all phases of the bridge construction.

Canada is funding most of the $1 billion project, with Washington only on the hook for the construction of a customs plaza on the U.S. side of the bridge.

That funding – $250 million – was thrown in doubt several months ago when Washington indicated it may not have the money.

Snyder thanked Canada for its generosity in the deal and described the U.S. position on the bridge – that it needs the bridge but doesn’t want to pay for it – as irrational.

“To be blunt, I think the U.S. federal government needs to do a better job,” Snyder told reporters.

Trade between the state of Michigan and Canada stands at roughly $75 billion a year, “far more than any other country,” Snyder said.

Raitt told reporters “our government won’t let financing disagreements get in the way of constructions timelines.”

Question to Josh 44th was the 4th POTUS in a roll to bomb Iraq.

    Hmm?

Was the Iraq war over on Jan 20th, 2009? Nope. It continues until Oct 2011. These wicked idiots should Use Their Medulla Oblongato sometimes and stop being Stupid Arses.

I have no idea. I do like to listen to it. I have been since the 1990s when C-SPAN started airing them. Since the Media is bent on Not reporting about what this POTUS does truthfully, this is the only way to get what the Obama administration is saying……directly.

I was shocked to see a tweet from ABC News tweeting about the WH presser. Hence the tweet post.

Have I said lately how much I love Josh Earnest. He is just fabulous. I love the way he handles the jackals. He is dispensing a bit of truth with every response to their stupid questions. The jackals channel the armchair critiques and Josh sets them straight with the facts. Love it.

Read Charles Pierce’s article on Iraq….as someone else had said very good. My favorite part was when he called the Bush clan “The Habsburgs of Kennebunkport.” How perfect! Having just returned from the capital of the Habsburg empire and some of its tribute paying satellites, I believe this was an apt metaphor. The Bushes, I’m sure, WISH for the power the Habsburgs had!!!
