“Rouhani, a moderate whose tenure has so far focused on economic and foreign policy rather than social reform, said Iran had to counter three phobias abroad; Iranophobia, Islamaphobia and Shiaphobia.

But on the home front, the country faces “Ententephobia” from those who continue to bridle at his overtures to the rest of the world, most notably over Iran’s long-disputed nuclear programme.

Such hardliners are “50 years late” Rouhani said, warning that such trenchant opposition would result in more volatility for Iran, rather than “win-win relationships” after years in the diplomatic wilderness. “That world is over,” Rouhani said of the longstanding chill Iran has faced.

“Ententephobia is a mistake. We must change the image of the Islamic republic, which has been tarnished in recent years,” he told an audience of Iran’s foreign ambassadors currently visiting Tehran.”

I notice the wink slinked herself out to write a diary at DKos criticizing D.C. Democrats.
Notice how these emos only seem to crawl out during election time? And it’s always to knock Democrats. Same with Corney West; haven’t heard from him in awhile but he did some speech essentially calling Pres. Obama a murderer. Wonder what their real motives are…???

Usually, all of you have read, RTd and summarized here everything, and I get to it 2 days later. But, on the very outside chance this was missed, good read: http://www.vox.com/2014/8/11/5991173/why-is-obama-bombing-iraq-but-not-syria-here-are-6-reasons?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=ezraklein&utm_content=monday

Had posted AP/HuffPost version before. Worth digesting again….pardon my obsession ;)

BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, speaking at the American Bar Association’s annual meeting Monday, said lawyers should play a key role in mitigating the “sharp partisan divides” that have shaken public faith in government.

“Lawyers fulfill their professional calling to its fullest extent when they rise above particular partisan debates and participate as problem solvers,” he said in a rare public speaking event before the ABA that focused on the historical significance of the Magna Carta, an English charter that turns 800 next year.

“No person, no matter how high, is above the law,” he told the lawyers in attendance. “I encourage you all, as officers of thecourts, to set your sights on the far horizon, to ensure that our legal profession continues to advance that ideal.”

Roberts said the Magna Carta, which is Latin for “Great Charter,” was meant to resolve “squabbling” between the king and land-owning barons in feudal England but touched on “fundamental freedoms” like due process rights, separation of powers, and rule of law that have reverberated through the centuries. It also warned of the dangers of “concentrated authority,” he said.
    ///////

This is a man who gutted a nearly 100 yrs old law on Campaign Finance law……Making Corporation as people. A guy who ruled so differently from any laws in US as Gun laws were concerned. A guy who has gutter the Voting Rights Acts….etc? Partisan? Chief Justice where is I will be like an Umpire as he once promised Us during the Senate Judicial Confirmation Hearings?

Perhaps, the Chief Justice should LOOK inward?

Ha! Here’s a fabulously funny photo of Robin Williams – just went by on my twitter timeline

It is such a loss – there was so much more for him to say and do. But I tell ya what – he was FUNNY and he knew how to make you laugh and that’s a lot.

We have been camping in the wilds of Montana, no cell service for 3 days. It was wonderful. Was almost sacred to come back and see what has happened. It is worse. The shooting of the young man in St inLouis so appalling. My heart goes out to his parents and all the parents of young black men. Having 2 sons I can’t imagine the pain.

Also the shock of Robin Williams death. When we lived in Boulder, Colorado, the show Mork & Mindy show was on. We had dinner a couple of times next to him and Pam Dawber. It was a wonderful experience. He was funny then too. I had heard he had a problem with depression and drugs. Such a shock.

The lose of a young man in his prime is unacceptable. We must stop this.

Thank you NW for the wonderful tweets. Now to go back and start reading what I have missed this weekend.

    • August 11, 2014 at 8:39 pm

Wow, what a wonderful experience for you, mtm.

See upthread my recollection of how Mork & Mindy was the show that all my friends (and myself too, of course) had to watch, we rearranged our schedules to watch.

Adored both Pam Dawber and Robin Williams.

Sir Paul McCartney performed at Dodger Stadium last night, first time since the Beatles last west coast tour in 1966. (I saw the Beatles in 1965 at what is now the stadium for San Diego High School, but back then it was one of two public stadiums (the other being Westgate Park, which is now Fashion Valley). Absolutely love that he performed in Missoula last week, that he would put on a show in a smaller venue — too back he’s on tour, he could have gotten some trout fishing in, LOL.

Thank you Arapaho415, it is a very special memory. Mork & Mindy was a great show. The house that was the front of their house was just down the street from us. It was great fun to be that close to greatness.

We have had Elton John, the Rolling Stones and now Paul McCartney, it seems they like the smaller venues now. We are thankful and the pleople turn out. He did mention he would have to come back to do some fishing.

What a time we are in. I do believe we are a great nation of good people. We will prevail.

    Prison Reform MY BLACK ASS!!!

    ……………….

    Sentencing, by the Numbers

    By SONJA B. STARR
    AUG. 10, 2014

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — IN a recent letter to the United States Sentencing Commission, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. sharply criticized the growing trend of evidence-based sentencing, in which courts use data-driven predictions of defendants’ future crime risk to shape sentences. Mr. Holder is swimming against a powerful current. At least 20 states have implemented this practice, including some that require risk scores to be considered in every sentencing decision. Many more are considering it, as is Congress, in pending sentencing-reform bills.

Risk-assessment advocates say it’s a no-brainer: Who could oppose “smarter” sentencing? But Mr. Holder is right to pick this fight. As currently used, the practice is deeply unfair, and almost certainly unconstitutional. It contravenes the principle that punishment should depend on what a defendant did, not on who he is or how much money he has.

The basic problem is that the risk scores are not based on the defendant’s crime. They are primarily or wholly based on prior characteristics: criminal history (a legitimate criterion), but also factors unrelated to conduct. Specifics vary across states, but common factors include unemployment, marital status, age, education, finances, neighborhood, and family background, including family members’ criminal history.

This is how classy elected GOP officials are. Here is a disgusting tweet from a GOP rep upon hearing of Robin Williams’ untimely and tragic death.

And then the idiot tried to cover it up after he got a very negative Twitter response by Tweeting this:

Best line from the USDOJ statement from AG Holder “At every step, we will work with the local investigators, who should be prepared to complete a thorough, fair investigation in their own right.”

what jumped out at me was the “who should be prepared” comment.

Such a gorgeous park, most beautiful National Park in the lower 48 (plus Waterton Canada, too!) IMHO.

For National Forest, my vote is cast my vote for El Dorado National Forest (near Lake Tahoe, but in CA). The explosion of wildflowers in mid-to-late July is not to be believe (high altitude, almost 10K feet).

Incredible tributes to Robin Williams, he touched so many people. RIP.
