“Germany and France will be as eager to forget Putin’s crimes as most Russians. Ukrainians and other non-Russians will be less quick to do so. Victims of aggression, war, and genocide tend to remember the pain. Whom will they blame? Putin and his system, definitely. But millions of fingers will also be pointed at Russians. “Why did our self-styled brothers enthusiastically support Crimea’s annexation and the war in eastern Ukraine? Why did they look the other way as Russian forces and Russian proxies killed thousands and destroyed the Donbas? Why did no one protest? How could they believe that our efforts to establish a democracy were anti-Russian? How could they possibly believe that we were ever anti-Russian?” Expect Ukrainians to insist on reparations. Expect Russians to shrug in response.

Ukrainians will look back at the 2014 Russo-Ukrainian War as their third bloody encounter with Russia in the last 100 years. Russian Reds and Whites crushed Ukrainian independence in 1917–1921. Soviet Russians then crushed the Ukrainian liberation movement in Western Ukraine in 1945–1954. Then, in 2014, Putin’s Russians and their proxies tried to crush independent Ukraine. And failed.

Putin’s failure is as evident now as are his crimes. He’s lost Ukraine. He’s destroyed the Donbas. In a word, he’s lost. The most he can do now is kill more Ukrainians and destroy more cities.

One day, when they finally wake up and realize their hero was a ruthless dictator, Russians will understand just how enthusiastically complicit they were in his evil—up to the very end.”

Al Hunt is clueless… PBO’s foreign policy is not unpopular……

      • August 12, 2014 at 5:12 pm

Everyone is getting into the click bait game re this story….I don’t put much credence to any of statements/articles from any org/journalist…they all want to provide a unique *angle*… this is the D.C. peanut gallery after all. Wait till tomorrow when stories appear about both attending Vernon Jordan’s home….in the end she f’ed up big time…once again proving how opportunistic the Clinton’s are, and people are not going to forget.

Ex-gov. Jennifer Granholm’s tweet about PBO and the ex SOS meeting tonight reminded me that it was Jennifer with Jim Messina who were proud to announce their readyForHillaryPAC and how it was sitting out 2014. Then after an uproar ensued, they issued a retraction.

Anybody seen them supporting 2014 candidates? Not a sarcastic question.
They may be doing a lot that doesn’t make the news.

      • August 12, 2014 at 5:21 pm

Yes it’s very unpopular. Around the country there are massive protests calling for an invasion of Iraq and reigniting the endless wars.

Oh wait no there aren’t . Which means AL Hunt doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

I read this post yesterday and this point jumped out at me – Hillary “takes any opportunity she can to bolster her own image – often at the expense of others.”

      //………………..

Now don’t get me wrong, these are a couple of excerpts from a very deep discussion about foreign policy. Hillary Clinton demonstrated that she has the chops to go toe-to-toe with anyone on that subject.

But she takes any opportunity she can to bolster her own image – often at the expense of others. The recovering therapist in me sees someone who is not quite comfortable with herself and therefore tends to be defensive. Yeah, I know, that’s what most politicians do. But its the overt and covert “digs” at others that is at least part of the off-putting “tone” that Giordano was referring to. The “Pavlovian response” is about remembering how that felt in 2008 (as well as Obama’s pitch perfect response). It also probably explains why her tendency so far has been to distance herself from President Obama this time around. She’s still feeling the need to define herself…after all this time.

I happen to be someone who thinks that “how” a politician operates is often just as important (if not more important) than “what” they want to do …………………………//

The reason listed on the Federal Aviation Commission’s website for the no-fly zone over the city is “TO PROVIDE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES.”

Gun stores in Missouri reported on Tuesday that they were seeing a spike in sales following the fatal shooting of teen Michael Brown and the ensuing confrontations between police and citizens.

Owner Steve King told the St. Louis Business Journal that his store, Metro Shooting, had seen a 50 percent increase, which he attributed to the violence taking place in Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb.

“We’ve sold a variety of handguns, shotguns and AR-15s (a semi-automatic rifle),” King said. “All of the sales are having to do with home defense. … Lots of people are afraid.”

The comments below this tweet are good, quite ‘adult’ in fact.

@TheFix: No. I’m a Republican. But I didn’t see anything in that ad over the top

@TheFix so Newtown parents don’t have free speech?

@TheFix Is this too much? Or is it too much that her 5-year-old child was slaughtered? I say the latter.

@TheFix Sorry, the whole premise is bit absurd. This ad is nowhere near over the line. You are almost trolling here

@TheFix How he responded to a tragedy is absolutely something he should campaign on. It’s part of being a leader.

      @TheFix no

      @TheFix no

@TheFix Really, her child was savagely murdered, it may be inconvenient to you, but what is too much after that?

@TheFix Why is this the one woman I’ve seen on every possible media outlet coverage of Newtown, since the beginning?

@TheFix What do the last 11 mass killings have in common? I’ll give you a hint, two were done without guns….

@TheFix Without question this is the single stupidest question you have ever asked…& it buys NRA spin….

@TheFix Nothing is EVER too much when it comes to our kids’ safety. Otherwise, why even bother to have kids in the 1st place? U’re a proud..

@TheFix (cont’d)… and devoted father, too, Chris. How’d U feel if one of ur lovely boys’ lives was ended by gun violence? Wdn’t.U despair?

@TheFix isn’t it sort of her prerogative, anyway? Moms of fallen soldiers are never scrutinized (and shouldn’t be) for either side

Since we could all use a little comic relief, I’m going to tell you about the bizarre political happenings in one of the local state assembly races in our area. Our county Republican Party, long used to winning all races, is now denouncing its own candidate for office on the front pages of the local newspaper. They accused him of being a delusional loser to which he responded in kind. That candidate happens to be a Libertarian who won the Republican nomination because the Republican candidates so mismanaged their signature gathering that they were disqualified. Then there was a mad scramble to get an acceptable (to Republicans) Independent on the ballot, which led to the public trashing of the one with the R next to his name. Fortunately for Dems, we have a solid, terrific candidate who won the Democratic nomination on a write-in and now has some R’s stepping forward to actually endorse him over the Republican or Independent. Longtime residents have never seen anything like this kind of public breakdown among Republicans and trace it to the growing war between traditional Republican leaders and the Tea Party. Will be interesting to see how much of this internal R conflict is causing party schisms in other states. In the meantime, it’s like watching high farce played on on the local stage.

    • August 12, 2014 at 5:29 pm

Fascinating, Jackie, and I don’t think it will be the exception ….. come the morning of 5 Nov 2014 and Republicans have been thoroughly trounced even in traditional R districts/states.

      • August 12, 2014 at 6:31 pm

Thanks, Jackie, for this comedy of errors report.

Agree wholeheartedly with Dr. Bob — GOP are like a disturbed anthill — ants scurrying about in every direction.

They’ve got one non-existent leader (Boehner) who contradicts himself every other day (Impeach. No, I meant sue!) and another on the ropes (McTurtle McConnell) and a former-soon-to-be-lobbyist – does-Heritage-have-any-openings-or-has-Jim-DeMint-ruled-that out? (Cantor).

Their media-assisted scandalabra has fallen flatter than a soufflé after a sonic boom. So has ACA, jobs, foreign policy “blunders” by the Obama Adm. — there’s really nothing for them to hang their hats without sounding unhinged.

Love your report — Adam Nagourney @nytimes could learn a lesson or two from your community (didn’t read his article this week, I skip any article whose premise is that GOP will win in November because delusional pieces are not my cup of tea).

    In completely trivial news:

I have the best boss in the world.

She took a long weekend because her wife was in Chi-town and she stayed home to watch their little one. She took yesterday as her scheduled day off, which means she’ll be working today through Saturday. Usually she and I switch off Fridays/Saturdays, and the other librarian works Tu-Sa. She asked me if I wanted to start my vacation early by taking Friday off, since we’re covered for both days with her being here. At first I said no, but then checked how much personal time I had and I have a large bank of it. So my vacay starts Friday, and my boss is golden.

The pistols are not used in self-defence—but to stop the men who are running away. They are considered substitutes for swift feet and long arms. Now we doubt the propriety of employing them for such a purpose. A Policeman has no right to shoot a man for running away from him.

Statement by the President on the Passing of Michael Brown

The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and his community at this very difficult time. As Attorney General Holder has indicated, the Department of Justice is investigating the situation along with local officials, and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed. I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. Along with our prayers, that’s what Michael and his family, and our broader American community, deserve.

Haven’t fully read the article from TPM (MoveOn Warns Clinton After Knocking Obama On Foreign Policy) … but WTG, MoveOn. The significance of this, if it hasn’t been mentioned, is that MoveOn was formed (this from Wiki) …

” … in 1998 in response to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton by the U.S. House of Representatives”

… and, we all know, they raise gazillions of dollars for candidates they deem as progressives. Take her down, MoveOn, she’s not a progressive, just like you tried to re-build Billy. On a personal note, sometimes what MoveOn puts “out there” is good, but every time I see that organization’s name, I’m reminded of the fact that multitudes of us stood up for Bill Clinton for 8 long years, only to see his true “colors” during the campaign of ’08. I just want them both to be gone from the national stage … maybe they can relocate the entire family to Alaska or something. I figure since she’s such big pals with McCain, they probably would love hangin’ with Palin, shooting buzzards from a helicopter or whatever the fuck she does.

Grrrrr. I need some happy juice!

    • August 12, 2014 at 6:03 pm

I don’t regret standing up to the witch hunt the Republicans unleashed on Bill Clinton. I would gladly do it again. 2008 was a different animal altogether.

And I have no problem with them being on the national stage. More power to them. I may not agree with everything they say but it doesn’t bother me in the least. That doesn’t mean I necessarily want them back in the White House but I never bought into the fact it’s all bad coming from the Clintons. Even in that botched interview (including her idiotic over the top support for Netanyahu) she made some insightful points.

But as Bob said. Right now the only thing I want to hear from her is helping Dems win in 2014.

From the Clinton administration to ’08, I would have agreed. After that, we differ big time, which is fine, but I definitely agree with you and Bob on your latter point: “All Dems in 2014 or Bust!”

I can only locate the ABQ articles, but I recall seeing past articles about the militarization of police all over the country, from urban Los Angeles to rural American, down through the deep South. Not sure about the Midwest or Northeast.

I also see references here at TOD that Libertarians support a police state, which confuses me — I thought Liberations are against all government, including police and fire departments (?).

      • August 12, 2014 at 7:41 pm

Just now seeing it, Arapaho……had to run an errand. The militarization of Police Depts. is extremely disturbing. Just imagine that most of this equipment is what we brought back from Iraq….the defense contractors/Cheney & Co. got so rich overselling no bid contracts for equipment we didn’t need that we left half of it in Iraq….which is now being used by ISIL. This devilish circle is haunting….

Just heard a report on CBS network radio that said that an average of 108 Americans commit suicide each year, more than are murdered.

I personally knew people who committed suicide, and know far more people who had a loved one commit suicide than I personally know of people murdered. Car accident victims are in between the two (as far as number of).

It isn’t written in stone, but if I win this thing, she’ll get an appointment to the Supreme Court at the first opportunity.”

Whether or not the MSM or HRC want to admit it, and whether or not voters even realize it, the truth is that policy-wise, the majority of the American people and certainly the Dems do in fact WANT an “Obama third term.” So any Dem pol who tries to run by “distancing” themselves from PBO, do so at their own peril.
