Morning, Chips, Roberta. So glad to see this morning opening since it’s a chance to start again after the dark and depressing news of last night’s posts. It’s a dreary day today and the news of Ferguson, Robin Williams, Ukraine, Iraq, Gaza, Syria weighs heavy on our hearts. As an antidote, I found a recent statement by Pope Francis on ten ways to lead a good and happy life.

Hi VC. It’s good to see a cheery presence this am. So much depressing news is very difficult to deal with. Maybe some weird climate change effect is causing world-wide craziness this summer. The number of body and mind blows per day is just getting unreal. How our president deasl with all of this and keeps his calm is beyond anything I can understand.

‘The number of body and mind blows per day is just getting unreal.’

Yes. JackieG, believe me, over the last couple of days it has been more ‘work’ to be cheery than it has ever been for me! Knowing myself though, supporting a heavy spirit over a long period is a burden that I cannot manage without coming up for air. I suspect PBO has his own mechanism for release, and whatever it is, I thank God for it, and for his control and inner fortitude. None of the others who ran for the presidency in recent years would have been able to stand strong or bend appropriately, confronted with so many storms and damaging winds as PBO has been.

Today will be better…..because we all are yearning for better, pushing the ‘cosmos’ with our desires? I hope.

    Gooooood Morning everyone…Ms Chips…NW…LL…BTs….TOD Villagers…..

in a seemingly chaotic world today….it hard to see the positive…I have been thinking about this….amid the turmoil there is HOPE….the Ukrainian People as Bob has said are more than willing to defend their freedom…Putin’s maneuvers has done much to unify not only Ukraine but the International Community….it was Twitter and Social Media…telling the truth about the happenings in GAZA that brought Israel to the table…they could not longer afford to continue there mission of genocide of the Palestinian people amid cries of war crime….and even in Ferguson…a community stands unified against the barbarism of the police force…forcing comments from Claire McCaskill…and AG Holder…..and we have hope that November 2014 will not be a repeat of 2010….we see the BEAST come out with poll after poll…survey after survey trying to convince us that we will lose…just as they did in 2012…but now as then we will not listen to them….and we will be victorious…

He played so many roles — something for everyone, dontcha think?

I understand if people don’t know who he was, but anyone who saw his comic routines or movies, must be saddened on hearing this news.

May be my boomer myopia, but I can’t think of any performer alive who can come close to matching his comedic zeal, spontaneity and ability to assume so many diverse roles.

A quote from the link Africa shared above.

      //……………………….
It was a brilliant media critique, and while Twitter and other platforms may have no magical power to stop shootings or catch warlords, one thing they are very good at is catching the attention of the media. Journalists pay attention to Twitter–disproportionate attention, maybe–and that makes it a very, very good place to deliver the modern version of a letter to the editor. You could say similar of #YesAllWomen, or of the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag of earlier this year: no, it didn’t have the power to free the Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, but it did put the story on homepages and newscasts often resistant to overseas news, especially from sub-Saharan Africa.

#IfTheyGunnedMeDown is not going to stop anyone from being gunned down, but it most likely lodged in the memory of editors and producers who make judgments every day. Sure, many of them are already aware of the power of image choices, but #IfTheyGunnedMeDown chose its own images to make a powerful statement–one that people are likely to remember the next time “if” becomes “when.”

the eyes of quiet determination…in the eyes of the Black Man,,,,

I wasn’t there, so I don’t know what happen, but it’s hard for me to believe that a young black man would get in a fight with a officer, that he would try to take the officer gun. It could have happen the way the officer said, but as of now I don’t believe it did. When it comes to young black men or any black men most officers will shoot first ask questions later, and if it was a white man that same officer would do everything they could to keep from killing the white man, it would be their last thought.

    Good morning TODville.

As LL said a couple of days ago, so much is happening now, hard to keep up.

If you missed it, Bobfr posted this last night — the play Robin Williams was rehearsing for looks amazing — can only imagine the absolute devastation for the cast, writers and everyone involved in this play, which itself sounds spectacular.

Just a hint of how many people’s lives he touched, generous and genius soul that he was. RIP, Robin Williams, best impersonator ever.

    • August 12, 2014 at 8:47 am

Just read the comments on this tweet and the interview with cast and writer appears to be from 2011.

This actually heartened me to know that the show was produced, that they did have the experience of working with Robin Williams. They must be devastated to hear the news.

Sorry, GGail…what a mess. When WP misbehaves it’s really annoying…I have no idea how to fix this problem but I have a question. Why is it necessary to subscribe to TOD? You come here all the time on your own…you sure don’t need to know when someone comments on your comment…I would think that to stop from getting into “trouble” with WP that you would just not worry about any comment notification…that’s annoying anyway:) I don’t opt for notification and its all good.

    Sentencing, by the Numbers

    By SONJA B. STARR
    AUG. 10, 2014

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — IN a recent letter to the United States Sentencing Commission, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. sharply criticized the growing trend of evidence-based sentencing, in which courts use data-driven predictions of defendants’ future crime risk to shape sentences. Mr. Holder is swimming against a powerful current. At least 20 states have implemented this practice, including some that require risk scores to be considered in every sentencing decision. Many more are considering it, as is Congress, in pending sentencing-reform bills.

Risk-assessment advocates say it’s a no-brainer: Who could oppose “smarter” sentencing? But Mr. Holder is right to pick this fight. As currently used, the practice is deeply unfair, and almost certainly unconstitutional. It contravenes the principle that punishment should depend on what a defendant did, not on who he is or how much money he has.

The basic problem is that the risk scores are not based on the defendant’s crime. They are primarily or wholly based on prior characteristics: criminal history (a legitimate criterion), but also factors unrelated to conduct. Specifics vary across states, but common factors include unemployment, marital status, age, education, finances, neighborhood, and family background, including family members’ criminal history.

A lion cub has led forest rangers to its mother’s corpse in an Indian sanctuary, an act described by officials as very unusual behaviour.

A forest guard, who saw the cub hiding in the bushes, followed it and went on to discover the body on a nearby hill.

The cub then guarded his mother until the ranger returned with forest and police officials to remove the carcass.

A post-mortem suggests the lioness died in a fight with other animals, possibly a herd of water buffalo.

Deputy Conservator of Forests in Gir, Anshuman Sharma, said the cub’s behaviour was “rare” and “very peculiar” – something he had not encountered in his many years of watching lions.

It may seem that @Mashable is late to this, but they appear to be one of the few media outlets who is not a #Ferguson PD mouthpiece — just eard this on CBS radio news, which boils my blood: … “police had to use force last night…” Yeah, more like police were ready to murder more unarmed residents.

Many of these tweets appeared on TOD yesterday. Hmmm, I wonder if Mashable reads TOD to get a pulse from other than the northeast media elite?

  26. August 12, 2014 at 9:08 am

    Good morning, TOD.
    Hi ya, Ms. Chips!
This is my last day of vacation in beautiful Sedona, Arizona. I will neve be the same. I have been lurking and the days and nights have been so peaceful, it was hard for me to even read what has been going on all over the world. At one pint Ievenfelt guilty being here. The people here have been very nice except for one incident with a waitress at a restaurant. We rose above that incident. We were not going to allow one ignorant person to poison our Spirits.
This is Pacific time zone so it took a day before my body could adjust to the altitude and the wonders of Nature here. I have a lot to catch up on when I do get back.

While I am waiting for the sun to rise I would like to take a few minutes to let Layla know that I am praying for total healing for your body, mind and soul. Peace on your soul as you heal. I believe as I pray and see you healed. We have to believe and see healing when we pray. I wish you could be here with me right now.
I purchased this wonderful book at the Grand Canyon entitled, ” I Am The Grand Canyon,” by Stephen Hirst. This is the story of the Havasupai people. This is why I will never be the same again.
With all the struggles they had and still have to endure, at the end of the day they are greatful to be alive.
I will take that spirit with me when I leave here and continue to pray for peace on this earth.
Have a great day everyone. I will post again when I return back home.

        Good morning, Jackie!
        Thank you.
I cannot express in words how this vacation has helped to awaken the power of healing that we have.
It is simply amazing that we do not realize that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We were created to love.
I am so beyond words by what is going on in Ferguson, Mo., the senseless killing of yet another young man.
As a mother, my heart is sadden for the family and everyone there.

So glad you got a week away to enjoy the beauty of northern Arizona.

This is the kind of vacation that everyone should schedule for themselves at least once in their life — constant demands of life make it difficult, so glad you’ve been able to experience the centering and contemplation and knowledge that Sedona offers.

Hope you had some spectacular sunsets. I’ve mentioned before that AZ and NM routinely have the 360-degree sunsets that are unmatched in most other places in the US.

      Safe journey home, LDS.

Lincourt Ellen I wonder if the selflessness that Robin Williams exhibited, while battling his own demons of addiction and depression, would qualify him for sainthood in the Episcopal Church. His life is an example of the Christian virtue of sharing joy in the face of burdens and woe. By elevating a person who struggled so hard with mental illness, we would be affirming that God calls us and makes us worthy, rather than God calling the worthy. Williams was involved in numerous charities and organizations that served others. He gave of himself unselfishly to the world. And in the end, he lost his battle with depression, but he endured for so long. These are qualities that can be an example for the Christian life. I would like there to be a movement to qualify Robin Williams as a saint of the Episcopal Church.

Republican incompetence is most obvious when you look closely at their irresponsible stewardship of the federal government. Republicans gave us the Great Depression and kept us there for four years without really attempting to fix anything. On the other hand, from 1932 through 1980, when Democrats held the White House and a supermajority in Congress, the New Deal and Social Security passed, as did market and economic reforms that led to the largest economic boom and social transformation in world history. That prosperity led to the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, Medicare, OSHA, FDA, FTC and the EPA, among many other changes.

Republicans brag constantly about the last 34 years, when Republicans have controlled enough of the government to block everything good for 30 of them. Mostly, the current Republican Party is all about austerity. They pretend to care about deficits and debt, but the fact is, most of the debt accumulated to date came from their incompetence. The money they borrow and spend doesn’t go toward investments in the country, like building infrastructure, which would actually create more revenue and less debt. Instead, they waste money on tax cuts for the rich and weapons for wars we’ll never fight, which creates, at best, a short-term economic stimulus.

      ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT REMINDER BEFORE NOV!!
