FERGUSON, Mo — David Hoech was the last, and most unexpected, protester of the night. The 74-year-old Vietnam veteran drove 60 miles to Ferguson where for the last three days unrest has gripped the town following Michael Brown’s killing by a cop. Hoech approached the line of police and SWAT vehicles in his sedan late Tuesday, turned around, and parked. When he opened the door, he leaned on his oxygen tank as police shone a spotlight on him. He walked across West Florissant Avenue, recently vacated by a large, boisterous, yet peaceful crowd that told police “We are Mike Brown.”

David Hoech also had something to say: “The only thing that matters in all of this is that mother who lost her son,” he said not far from the police line. “I want to give her a hug and tell her I love her. I have four kids and eight grandkids and I haven’t had to bury any one of them. What she’s going through must be terrible.”….

…“I came out here to say what’s right and what’s wrong, and this is wrong,” Sharon Whitaker said. The 57-year-old Gulf War veteran at one point knelt on the pavement in front of police, who were in a protective position behind two SWAT trucks. “We got to watch these kids die and it don’t make no sense. Just because they live in a certain neighborhood doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a chance.”

Brown’s chance is a well-remembered memory here. He was to attend college on Monday but instead, as attorney Benjamin Crump noted at a press conference with Sharpton, Brown’s family was preparing for a funeral. The family has secured the services of Crump, who represented Trayvon Martin’s family. Brown has taken on legendary status in Ferguson, as the spray paint marking the spot where he died indicates. “I am legend,” it reads. While many are focused on seeking justice for Brown’s death, some, like Hoech, have said they want only healing and the mending of a community torn apart by the events of the past few days. “I want to go back there and talk to the people,” Hoech told officers at the police line, eventually succeeding and becoming the only person allowed through all night. “This is America. I can go where I want to go. And if you’re going to shoot my ass, go ahead and shoot me.”

Laura Rozen is echoing my view shared here recently. After a visit to my daughter and her family who live in Clayton.
Not just racism—Phyllis Schlafly Boulevard runs through it. Todd Akin really does speak to many more people than we would like to believe. Claire did win, however.

I am sitting here, watching the live feed in Ferguson Missouri in total disbelief. I mean, I know that this is happening, but this is 2014 in the United States of America. (The feed went dead. I hope the cameraman is okay. )

    Where is Gov. Nixon?

    Who shot Michael Brown?

    Why hasn’t he been arrested?

Why are the police of Ferguson Missouri firing rubber bullets on peaceful, unarmed people?

police chief chooses to go on sean insanity while all hell is breaking out on the streets. no doubt he feels sean is only one he ‘trusts.’ says all you need to know about why this happening.

it’s been building and building ever since president obama first won in a a landslide. the power structure is so freaked out about losing the control they’ve had for so long, that they’ve been purposely trying to stoke events such as this and bundy ranch, and i bet they’re hoping for another oklahoma city event. it’s the last gasps of the confederacy. the last vestiges of the american civil war (which never really ended entirely). we’re winning in the long run, but it’s so tragic that so many are dying and people getting hurt in the process as republican/libertarians work out their inferiority complexes. shame on them for eternity.

You’re spot on 4more. These goons are scared to death, so this is how they react. A cornered animal will lash out, and this is what they’re doing. They are to be feared, because they have no inner check on themselves, they are acting on lizard instinct right now.
So glad this is being filmed and tweeted! Otherwise, the world would never know.
I did not know how militarized police have become, and I do NOT like it. This is a wake up call for all citizens to reclaim our police departments and get some control over them. There just seems to be frenzy and hyped up “wanna be” tough guys in our police departments. The only people I’m afraid of are police; no one else.

What is happening in Ferguson is just as egregious as what happened in Gaza.

I know who Politico is and where their sentiments don’t lie. It doesn’t matter a lick to me.
In this instance, I hope every journalist who has a platform will beat that drum hard until his sorry ass out of office.

Short of implementing a state takeover of those two police depts, anything that man says tomorrow will just be hot spit blowing into a fan.

i wish people would stop lumping all this into “wtf america” and the like. these kind of things happen in specific areas where a specific mentality dominates or is in power. overall, “america” elects president barack hussein obama. overall, we’re making progress on so many fronts. that doesn’t diminish the tragedies that happen within america such as michael brown’s murder and the aftermath. i didn’t see president obama’s statement about ferguson, but i bet we’ll be hearing more of this sentiment from him as he speaks and acts more about this insanity in ferguson,mo, since he so often makes the point that we need to remember the bigger picture too, even when we’re depressed and dealing with specific tragedies.

When a Police Chief doesn’t see those who help pay for his salary and those who are supposed to have his “Serve and Protect” sworn order……the lack of Humanity. The lack of understanding. Then obviously, the man should NEVER be in that position.

I am so sick and tired of reading these stories.

I am also so sick and tired of people telling those who are oppressed to continue to take it…..silently, quietly, with dignity when those advising Have Never Examined their complicity to the Continued problem.

For a problem to be FIXED, there must be acceptance, agreed grievances and most importantly, there must be Fact Based data to determine what the root causes were and still are.

      • 80 jacquelineoboomer
        August 14, 2014 at 12:49 am

Another take might be that it’s an example of how black residents of a town better “simmer down,” or they’ll be teargassed or jailed or killed for walking in the street. In other words, how the oppressed shouldn’t “act up,” ask for the same rights as everybody else, or there will be severe penalties. Like in North Korea, for instance Kind of how they left Michael Brown’s body in the street, for hours, as part of the lesson plan.

I’ve mentioned before that the #Ferguson PD are idiots because they’ve enraged the national MSM who love nothing better than to rally around their own. One of the scandalabra grievances was the WH vs. AP leak.

Unless the journalist works for Corporate Fox News or Breitbart, etc., journalists will circle the wagons to protect their own, because that is about the only thing important to them.

    • August 14, 2014 at 12:37 am

      Who is demanding?

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that I’m concerned that PBO will be dragged into this, shades of LBJ sending the National Guard to Alabama in 1965 to protect the Selma marchers.

But that situation was different because Gov. George Wallace refused to spend state funds on the deployment of the National Guard (a state responsibility), so LBJ used his federal authority (and dollars) to direct the National Guard there.

What the heck is Gov. Jay Nixon doing? He should be in Ferguson to direct the lawless St. Louis County police chief to stand down.

With all the crises brewing in the Middle East and Ukraine, who could have predicted that it would be a domestic matter pertaining to race that has the potential to really interfere with PBO’s vacation?

Did not see MSNBC, but am angry at @Maddow for whining about “boots on the ground” in Iraq (Adm and Pentagon now indicate the situation on Sinjar Mountain is not as bleak as was feared because of US air drops of provisions and because some refugees have escaped that location). The only viewers she will win with that kind of reporting are emoputins.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) has just released a statement:

    Aug. 14, 2014
Statement from Governor Nixon on events in Ferguson
Jefferson City, MO — Gov. Jay Nixon tonight issued the following statement on events in Ferguson, Missouri:
“The worsening situation in Ferguson is deeply troubling, and does not represent who we are as Missourians or as Americans. While we all respect the solemn responsibility of our law enforcement officers to protect the public, we must also safeguard the rights of Missourians to peaceably assemble and the rights of the press to report on matters of public concern.
“I have been closely monitoring the situation and will continue to be in communication with local leaders, and I will be in north St. Louis County tomorrow. As Governor, I am committed to ensuring the pain of last weekend’s tragedy does not continue to be compounded by this ongoing crisis. Once again, I ask that members of the community demonstrate patience and calm while the investigation continues, and I urge law enforcement agencies to keep the peace and respect the rights of residents and the press during this difficult time.”

Sorry to say, but same as Michael Brown. He didn’t get on the sidewalk.

I’ve had enough! Don’t stay up all night, Dudette, but thanks for all of your tweets and comments!

    Good night my TOD family.

“A world in upheaval is the breaking of the old sod-the revealing of rich fresh soil ready for new planting. Rejoice in the opportunity to sow a new crop.” Jonathan L. Huie

    And:
“This time, like old times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.” Ralph W. Emerson.

    #TogetherWeCan

I love each of my TOD family members, and I hope we will never give up on this fight. We have too much invested in this great President of these United States, and he knows how much we care and are working with him. It keeps him fighting for what is right for all of humanity. Trust me, please. Do not be discourage but speak up and let us work together to make it a little better each day. {{{{{{{{{Love you Chips}}}}}}}}}}}HZ

Goldie Taylor dropped some history on the folks. She’s wonderful!

Truth! Might be a surprise to some.

Good. It is important that everyone sees what minorities in the US experience on a daily basis. Maybe they should be sending us funding for our own iron dome.

There’s more journalism here on TOD than on all the msm.

Eternal gratitude to all here for keeping us informed.

These horrific events grind the soul. There are no words.

amen, lynn. no other news site has the breadth, the depth, or the intelligent, sensitive analysis that is found here. this is our haven and our home, our safe place in a storm.

This place keeps me sane, susanne, no easy task. “…safe place in a storm.” says it all. Old, old memories from the 50’s and 60’s, living in Miami, keep trying to crowd in and I just CAN’T let myself go back there. The knowledgeable voices and caring spirits that make the place a home provide a refuge when the clouds gather.

    I woke up just before 4 AM…

CNN starts their live show now at 4 AM. There was no mention of Ferguson until after 4:30 and it was mentioned for about 1 minute. All coverage for the 1st hour was about what is going on in Gaza and Ukraine. Also about the POPE in S.Korea.

The media keeps saying this is the Ferguson Police Dept. It is not, it is the St. Louis County Police doing this.

the fact that the police in Ferguson are getting away with all this behavior – while the entire world is watching them- does not bode well – we can count on further police action(s) of this manner in other cities.
I watched the video last night of the peaceful protestors.. and the attack by the cops w/ their teargas/ rubber bullets. Watching them do this to unarmed citizens, in neighborhoods… where children and babies were sleeping.. thinking- no one is going to stop these police. Nothing anyone says/ does/ protests is going to stop these police. All the words/ speeches have been directed at the citizens, citizens who everyday fear that they or one of their children will be shot/ killed for being black… where are the speeches by politicians/ city / state leaders to the police- to the folks actually directing/perpetuating the violence and mayhem? Why is it the citizens who are supposed to be calm and rational and stand down?

I have commented not at all about this ongoing situation because my anger/ rage is almost unbearable. I still have a 15 year old son- black/ biracial living at home.. and I am sick that he has to fear police.. see them constantly as an enemy- and that is their fault. okay, enough from me, I have nothing kind or good to say on cops. Just thanks Chips for being here.
