Free in America? Bundy Ranch Militias, Open-Carry Ammosexuals, or Ferguson Black Residents?

Free in America? Bundy ranch militias, Open-carry ammosexuals, or Ferguson black residents?

by @zizii2

Militias at Bundy ranch,NV

Open-Carry advocates in Austin, TX

Open-carry advocates in Target store, TX

Protesters of Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO

Riot police descend on Black protesters in Ferguson, MO

Riot police descend on Black protesters in Ferguson, MO

~~~~~
Consider the  photographs above of events that happened this year less than six months apart? There is no comparison. That is the point. They all involve American citizens in protest over perceived affront to their rights. But can the people in those photographs be interchanged with the same outcomes? Can the Ferguson MO black residents stage their protest armed like the Bundy-ranch militias or the open-carry ammosexuals flaunting their AR-15s in stores in public? Would they be covered by the media with fawning deference as we saw during the standoff in Nevada or in the narratives spun about open-carry advocates?
~~~~

Of course no. It is not hyperbole to say the streets there would already have been littered with many more black bodies being gunned down by platoons of SWAT teams pouring in to maintain “law and order.” They would not be retreating like the BLM and law enforcement did outside the Bundy ranch in Nevada in order to safeguard “public peace” and NOT escalating the potential for violence. The media would have whipped up the fear factor to the rafters, not the love-in we saw when the Bundy ranch militias had federal officials locked in their gunsights and bragged they were ready to “water the tree of liberty”.

~~~~
Likewise, the language of inherent criminality being used now to describe Ferguson’s black residents’ protests would not be invoked in similar actions by white protestors. It is like clockwork, the types of thesauri with stock phrasing that get whipped out to describe public behavior of American citizens depending on their race and class. White Militias are “patriots” defending the “constitution”, not “lawbreakers, or thugs, or looters.” White youths’ public misbehavior and even serious felonies are given benefit of the doubt as “feisty pranks” or aberrant “lone wolves” or “mentally challenged” individuals.
~~~~

Blacks and Latinos are described as criminals-in-the-making and bearers of regressive group cultural traits who should be “feared” and removed from civilized society. There is an insistence that their citizenship can only rest on approval of their morality, something that is not required of any other groups. The statistics from our criminal justice system glaringly show the disparities in who gets convicted for similar crimes and who gets slapped on the wrist.

~~~~
Therein lies the dirty underbelly of American creed of “Freedom” and “justice”. It was always a lie, from the nation’s founding. But it was a powerful lie that sewed together a nation populated by peoples of disparate backgrounds ever re-making themselves anew with infinite optimism in this vast land. City on a Hill, it was. Even if built on the blood of shackled slaves. Frederick Douglass described this foundational hypocrisy so astutely in his famous speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”
~~~~

Question is why the lie? Other societies don’t bother to broadcast “Freedom” for all. Don’t pretend to want equality for all. For a nation that prided itself on throwing off the yoke of calcified monarchies, and hewing to the creed — “all men are created equal”, why does this country keep insisting on universal “freedom”? I argue that “freedom” is a useful cover that keeps a tight lid on fissures cracking apart a deeply unequal society. It is a release valve in the same way that maintaining an underclass that can be scapegoated for society’s ills. That way we don’t have to deal with crushing class inequality.

~~~~
And what the wielders of power bet on is that the eruptions be it in Ferguson or Nevada, will inure to their benefit. The Fearful buy more weapons, and disenfranchised minorities get slaughtered in the street, or fill profit-making private prisons!
~~~~

Freedom!

    It has been, as you summarize, zizi.

    However, the behavior of the citizens of Ferguson and the rapid and extensive support they have received; essays like yours, and a veritable mountain of tweets and other commentary, that the “media” has no hope of suppressing; the leadership of President Obama and Pope Francis; the momentum of OFA, Moral Mondays, and more; and, the fact that among the wealthiest Americans, voices are speaking to the non-sustainability of inequality suggest that Hope & Actions to eradicate inequity are substantial, motivating, and growing.

    Litmus test for every person will be turnout and outcomes on 4 Nov 2014. Any voting age person in Ferguson and every other community in America who doesn’t vote or votes Republican, in reality voted for one and only one thing, sustaining inequity.

    Good Day Todders:-)
    Happy Saturday….What an emotional week….but I am so Grateful PBO is doing the work behind the scenes in every parts of the world.
    I had to stay away for a second..tired of Mike Dyson Dr. Patterson and other black media bashing PBO for Ferguson…
    Like…why isn’t he using his voice to address police brutality…black poverty..unemployment…yadaya I mean they went full blast…my heart was heavy…I feel for our President…these idiots, haven’t been paying attention..This President has 400 death threats a day, a Tv station (Fox) and radio stations that denigrates His being 24/7…he’s working with worst congress in history..main goal is to destroy and sue him…I gave them my 2 cents on twitter…but evidently this morning they still at it.

    Here’s a good one from Dr. Patterson; I was disappointed that this President on his Ferguson statement..started with Iraq, rather than Ferguson…what the heck? Like saving the 40,000 stuck in the mountains from genocide didn’t matter.. Good Lord..I was SmdH! time and time again PBO looks at crisis globally and acts accordingly…Who cares how he said it and in what order?
    With all the PHD’s these guys have… are looking smaller and smaller by the day…

    Sorry about my rant…

    In other news…This pic had me crying again (tears or joy) reminded me of my encounter at the market (looks like him)
    I love humanity:-)

      • August 16, 2014 at 4:38 pm

        So far, you’re right about the press conference. They’re trying to keep it focused on “safety and security” and “allowing people to peacefully protest”. He is pretty much ignoring questions about the investigation (other than to say that an additional 48 FBI agents have be brought in and are canvassing the area of the shooting). They have enacted a curfew form 12 midnight to 5 AM.

        I have the feeling that the governor is only concerned about appearances — avoiding the riots. I would think if he truly wanted to address the people’s concerns, he would include someone in the press conference who could talk about the investigation.

    You sum up the problem so succinctly. Divide and conquer keeps people from recognizing the greater threat posed by inequality and an unjust system that favors the wealthy. Corporate profits soar, wages are flatlined, people are cynical and fail to exercise their one power which is voting. If every eligible voter in Ferguson voted the power structure would become more representative.

      I took the time to watch that (hard though it was), and was not at all surprised to see O’Reilly revealing part of the payoff that Ben Carson got for his appearance. After Ben responded like a trained pet, Bill reminded him that he would have him back another time to talk about his presidential aspirations. You could see Ben was pleased. [I wonder why so many Republicans are so delusional?]

    The pattern that we are seeing, especially when it comes to the murder of unarmed black men, is shoot first — justify later. And laws like “Stand Your Ground” are the impetus that says it’s okay to do this.

    The justification is created, not based on the facts of the incident that resulted in the murder, but from digging to find ANYTHING that can be considered negative in the victim’s life and therefore, labeling the victim as a thug, criminal, etc.

    The distractions are aided by the MSM. And sadly, there are those who react to the distractions, thus, helping the distractors achieve their goal — keep the focus on the maligned character of the victim and away from the situation at hand.

    Some of these gun lovers were totting their guns at near rallies held by president Obama in 2009. The Police, the Secret Service, etc left them alone.

    The right of many of Us not to be killed, intimidated or scared by these gun carriers are willfully ignore. The public place belong to all of Us. The rights of majority of Us are violated by some who wish to run around totting guns. 2nd Amendment Right Never Ever should override, the 1st Amendment for which our Founding Fathers said……..Must Never be infringed nor changed.

      President of Ukraine continued consultations with Vice President of the United States

      President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko continued consultations with Vice President of the United States Joseph Biden.

      The parties discussed international efforts on settlement of the situation in the Donbas. Particularly, the President noted that recently, illegal entry of heavy armament and military machines in Luhansk and Donetsk regions had been significantly intensified causing further escalation of the conflict. At the same time, Petro Poroshenko emphasized that the safety of civilians, particularly residents of Donetsk and Luhansk was an absolute priority in the course of the ATO. According to the President, the peace plan is the only way to establish peace in the Donbas and stability in Ukraine.

      Joseph Biden and Petro Poroshenko agreed to coordinate further actions in the international arena.”

    Oh, and a bit more on the missus’ job.

    She’s not working directly for the family, but through an agency. As with most home health, she works an eight hour shift where the agency pays her to take her lunch while she’s working. But the mom told her: “Don’t worry, *I’ll* make sure you get breaks.” This may turn out to be a very good thing for her.

    Ok, off to be a house-husband.

    • August 16, 2014 at 3:44 pm

      Hello LL.

      Always nice to read you speak about your Missus. The love and respect always shine through.

      Yes, you need to be a house-hubby once in awhile. Every woman loves that. Bonne besogne.

    • August 16, 2014 at 4:00 pm

      Excellent news about your wife’s new employment situation, LL.

      BTW, recent media reports (so far all in Ukrainian), indicate that the ICRC is inspecting each truck and that an ICRC representative will ride in each truck as it crosses the UA border and travels to its agreed distribution location in Luhansk. All of this activity is entirely separate from the flow of military personnel and supplies that continue to cross the UA border.

      • 61 jackiegrumbacher
        August 16, 2014 at 4:16 pm

        Good. Once again, I worry about the safety of the ICRC reps. Neither Russia, nor its goon squads in Eastern Ukraine, have shown much concern for human life.

        • August 16, 2014 at 6:07 pm

          Am also worried for them, but they will have constant monitoring through the entire process though that still might not deter the goons.

          Hope all is well for you, Jackie. Have been keeping you in my thoughts.

    Zizi, I’m always amazed at your ability to inspire and teach. Your posts never fail to stir my heart and force us all to think more broadly about things that enrage and frustrate us. You are on to something profound in your idea of freedom. To me, it has always meant that those designated as privileged can act without restraint, while the rest of us must adhere to the expectations assigned to our class, ethnic group, religion or gender. President Obama broke the mold of the ‘expectations’ assigned to him and he has never been forgiven the breach, so he, and those who voted for him, must be made to pay every day. What the designated privileged do not expect is serious push back and the fact the Ferguson PD is getting it from around the country, is knocking them off their stride. They seem desperate to me, with their lies, diversion, coverups and other follies. If you’re going to maintain your ‘privilege’ you’ve got to have unquestioned power (and PBO and Gov. Nixon undermined that) or you have to have finesse, which this crew is incapable of.

    • August 16, 2014 at 4:29 pm

      I agree, but I have been annoyed that he keeps broaching a theory about Michael Brown’s state of mind (his behavior may have been based on him having just been involved in a robbery and assuming that the police had stopped him because of that) as well as Officer Wilson (as if he were aware of the robbery and had approached Michael Brown with that mindset). He broached that with several guests until one reminded him that the FPD chief said in his afternoon press conference that the officer was unaware of the robbery.

      Other than that, I agree.

    Here is a great example of how the media facilitates the Ferguson PD’s character assassination of Mike Brown and the residents of Ferguson:

    // Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon will speak about unrest in Ferguson, Missouri at 4:00 p.m. ET. Business owners in Ferguson are cleaning up after looting broke out early Saturday morning despite calls for peace from protesters Friday night, NBC News reported. Calm had returned to the town by Saturday afternoon, with members of the community helping ransacked businesses, including the convenience store where Michael Brown apparently carried out a “strong-arm robbery” minutes before he was shot. The release of surveillance video showing the robbery was condemned by Brown’s family and their attorneys, who said it was an attempt to demonize the teen, who was unarmed and surrendering when shot. Saturday afternoon marked a week since Brown was killed. //

    - No mention of the killer cop’s name or anything about him
    - No mention that the video was UNRELATED to the shooting.
    - No mention that the DOJ requested that the video not be released (only that Brown’s family and lawyers condemned the release)
    -No Mention that the police chief’s version of what happen has changed 3 or more times
    -No mention that no incident report was filed on the day of the shooting

    Source: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/national-international/Ferguson-Cleans-Up-After-Another-Night-of-Unrest-271525101.html#ixzz3AaVl0qzt

    They wasted no time mentioning that video – a video that is UNRELATED to the events of the shooting. And this is supposedly an article about a press conference given by Nixon, not about the video. And people think the media is not complicit in the perpetuation of racism in this country?
