A woman vet was interviewed and said she was in front and there were no gunshots or molotov cocktails thrown. She also said having been in the service for 10 yrs she knows teargas. These were NOT smoke bombs, but teargas according to her. She said everything was peaceful and they had no warning from police. Children were hit with teargas.

“this FPD has created its own war zone and won’t leave while anyone is still standing.”

my gut says it won’t get that far.

They dug themselves in a hole and have no idea how to get out and so this is the tantrum that they did not expect to get televised and have no idea how to undo what they did “publicly”. It won’t end well…for them.

        • August 18, 2014 at 1:06 am

The FPD is exhibiting reckless behavior because they are retaliating to perceived wrongs to them rather than upholding their duties to serve and protect.

*How dare the citizens of Ferguson question the actions of one their officers?!?!?!

*How dare they put a black man in charge?!?!? And how dare that black man be effective in bringing calm to the city after they had gone out of their way to incite the protesters to show the world that the black people in Ferguson did not deserve any consideration!?!?!

*How dare the media show the world how the FPD treats its citizens?!?!?!? We are getting a glimpse of what Ferguson — especially its black citizens — know to be routine behavior. The operations of the FPD are now receiving unwanted scrutiny that will probably reveal corruption that extends beyond the FPD…thus the silence and inaction of the mayor, county prosecutor, city council, etc.

    • August 18, 2014 at 12:35 am

“…or I will shoot you,” Is that what Officer Wilson said to Michael Brown….except in that case he followed through?

The actions of the FPD in provoking and attacking the protesters can’t be too far removed from how Wilson probably acted when he confronted Michael Brown.

Nerdy Wonka, thank you for all of your hard work gathering this information and these tweets as they happen.

WTF? This is crazy. The Ferguson Police has declared war on the community. They are not responding to anything. It is obvious by the police chief and others working for him going on Hannity and the actions they are taking now that the department is made up of those RWNJ white racists who tweet and post each other about PBO’s election bringing about some so-called “race war” Their hate and paranoia has been directed at the people they are supposed to be serving, and now,THEY are the ones who have declared war.

The National Guard needs to come in asap. Does anyone know if the National Guard or the Governor can force this PD to stand down?

My take. The Ferguson police chief watched the church rally for Michael Brown, with all of the speeches from activists. All of the people coming together. The plans to change conditions in Ferguson. Townspeople cleaning up again today, like they were going to make it through this, and get stronger together. So, the chief decided to “take back” his town tonight, pre-curfew. One last one for the gipper, so to speak. Surely tomorrow the governor will send in the MO National Guard … because the outrage over tonight will be long-reaching and is already palpable. It’s my guess the chief wanted to take a stand and has the prosecutor behind him.

Maybe we’re going to hear more from our experienced military on this. They needed extensive tactical and strategic training to use the weaponry of war, abroad, which is now being bandied about by local police officers at will – like they’re in an action movie. War is not a game to them. And these local police have brought warfighting tactics to their hometown.

The press briefing will occur in 5-10 minutes or so – MSNBC is covering it. One of the reporters asked if “Johnson” would be giving it, and I believe one of the police nodded his head in the affirmative. They’ll take questions.

  53. 117 jacquelineoboomer

Here’s Captain Ron Johnson now, on MSNBC, starting his press briefing.

    • 118 jacquelineoboomer
      August 18, 2014 at 2:17 am

He’s very upset and appears nervous. He says “things took a turn after dark,” blaming premeditated violent acts by civilians for shots fired and multiple Molotov cocktails thrown, as well as looting of several businesses, by agitators. There was a shooting of a civilian. Happened around the 8 p.m. hour.

      • August 18, 2014 at 7:50 am

“…premeditated violent acts by civilians for shots fired and multiple Molotov cocktails thrown, as well as looting of several businesses, by agitators…”

Were these agitators part of the peaceful protestors (I doubt it) or persons brought in for the specific purpose to stir up violence? Cynical yes, but the FPD has brought about that frame of mind based on their actions from day one.

    • 120 jacquelineoboomer
      August 18, 2014 at 2:22 am

Captain Johnson says police were shot at, and makeshift barriers were set up to block police … said he had NO ALTERNATIVE but to bring in the police responders. The various chiefs have talked with the governor via teleconference, and he says they are all determined to restore the peace. He seems mad as hell right now. He was asked if he knew families with children were among the protesters at the 8 p.m. hour, and he said at that time there were Molotov cocktails coming over at police, and they responded.

        • 122 Puddin'
          August 18, 2014 at 3:06 am

I agree…he knows what is really going on. And I believed him when he said all of this “violence” was planed…I say, we all know by whom!!! This is crazy…

      • August 18, 2014 at 3:24 am

When a GOOD cop like Captain Johnson says police intervention was necessary, I believe him. And frankly, after seeing and hearing him describe the events, and seeing how concerned and upset he was, I am shaken.

It’s horrible that ordinary citizens, peaceful protestors, children, were caught up in the middle. And yes, some individual cops are not acting as professionals ( menacing reporters !!) and I want them disciplined !!!!! But I think we have to take a pause and seriously consider how difficult the situation is becoming, and be careful in our judgment on the police as a whole.

In a country where guns are so easily available, a few criminals can create a lot of trouble and I have empathy for police officers who have to deal with that.

Do many of them lack training ? You bet. But let’s acknowledge that now with some agitators acting in a coordinated way, some of them having guns, it’s a whole new ball game.

For the record, the first people to blame are the Ferguson PD leadership who refused to do the right thing, and put the protection of one of their own over their duty of justice and transparency. Add to that the military tactics of the first few days, and the release of the video, which put fuel on the fire.

Now that the toothpaste is out of the tube, there is no easy solution for restoring order. I’m not talking about peaceful protestors. I’m talking about the minority of agitators who won’t give up easily.

So they are still addressing the result of not arresting a killer – they are still blaming the people of Ferguson for the violence – somewhere, sometime people have to get justice or this will continue.

I have little doubt PBO had to yet again, tell the Governor what to do. A fair weather governor indeed – hope he wasn’t looking to go on to higher office – perhaps the only good from this total event – he was outed as useless under pressure.

I cross-posted this at Little Green Footballs:

The young and usually white dudebros have such a romantic idea about revolution. For them, it’s start shit and then the revolution comes. Never mind the political side-organizing, having a coherent governing philosophy, gaining the trust of people-it’s straight to revolution. The RCP is like that (I remember them from the early 1980’s). No philosophy how to govern, how to help people, just stir shit. I bet most of them don’t even know half of Marx or have read most of Lenin.

Successful revolutions require strategy and maturity and years of political organizing. And living and working long-term with the people and gaining trust.

Also the dudebros are acting out of their own white sense of entitlement-they won’t be going to the restaurants after this is over. Nor will they have or make any effort to replace the services they rendered. They won’t even stay in town to help rebuild, organize, or even help calm people.

Needless to say, the residents have made it clear they have no beef with any of the businesses there or any owners. No independent action was taken against any of them-indeed the owners are minorities and immigrants themselves.
