Good morning and a big Happy Birthday to Danny!!!! Yesterday was an incredible, fantastic day. The Latino Fiesta was a great, great success and the 60 percent chance of rain did not produce one drop from beginning to end. Later I am going to try posting a photo or two based on VC’s directions, but just wanted to thank everyone for the good wishes. We served food to over 400 people, danced, played games, won prizes, registered new voters, helped people with immigration issues and had a terrific, if exhausting time. We served empanadas, tamales, tacos, ham and rice, beans with rice, hotdogs, watermelon, endless supplies of chips, and tons and tons of cookies, popcorn and sno cones and nobody went away hungry. Will leave you with one story to start the day. A Latino friend and I asked a young father if he was going to vote for Democrats in November. He said he knew nothing about ‘Democrats’. My friend said it is President Obama’s party. And the man said. “Obama, Obama. I love Obama. I would vote for him again.” When we told him that voting Democratic would help President Obama, he said “Then I will vote Democratic for sure.” So, don’t let anyone tell you EVER–that our president is not a powerful influence among voters. President Obama is beloved and I will not believe or accept one damned poll that tells me otherwise.

What a wonderful event, sounds like great fun. It also sounds like a tremendous amount of work for those who organize it. Thanks for everything you do.

Glad to hear that it didn’t rain, sorry that the forecast had you worried.

Such a great place to spread the word about voting, since so many people with young children don’t have the luxury to dig deeper than MSM headlines to know what’s really going on, and the MSM claims that “both sides are to blamed for [fill in the blank].”

      Good story too.

G’morning Jackie, and thanks for sharing this heartwarming experience with us!! Your story basically confirms what we here at TOD have long suspected, and the MSM has been trying to keep people from knowing. All these silly polls and false narratives about PBO being unpopular and Dems running away from PBO have very little or no bearing on reality, and are just one of the GOP/MSM’s favorite voter suppression strategies.

    • August 24, 2014 at 9:17 am

You are the BEST. Congrats and a huge thank you for all your outreach efforts. I know you are making a BIG difference in your community. I hope you have a good day of satisfaction and rest!

The sun rises in about an hour from now, so that’s when damage assessment can truly begin.

After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which happened at 4:31 am in January, I was most grateful in the knowledge that the sun would soon be rising — with no power and broken things all over the place, that’s what unharmed people want the most.

I compared in my mind being in the situation of the Loma Prieta earthquake in the late 1980s, which occurred at about 5:00 pm, which means unharmed people there knew it was going to be a long, dark night.

Woke up at 3:20am by the sway of the earthquake from up north. This is a bad one and such a frightening time for people who are affected by damage and shock. My heart goes out to the communities near the epicenter.

Downtown Napa is a quaint little town with lots of old brick buildings and lots of wine shops/wineries, so you’re going to see a lot of damage to buildings and wine stock.

        • 58 arapaho415
          August 24, 2014 at 8:57 am

Yes, the older buildings are at risk during an earthquake.

We can be grateful that the earthquake happened on a Sunday, and just before dawn (as opposed to the Loma Prieta earthquake which happened close to sundown on a workday).

Not many people up and about at 3:30 am on a Sunday to get hit by falling bricks, which happened in Paso Robles (or nearby) and killed a tourist in that district.

          • August 24, 2014 at 9:05 am

Yes, exactly. I think there could have been some very serious injuries from falling debris in the streets but also all the aisles in the markets with flying bottles.

      August 24, 2014 at 8:54 am

Thought of you when I heard about the earthquake.

Mentioned upthread that it will soon be light here, when damage assessment can truly begin.

Fires are a scary aspect of earthquakes. Friends who lived in Northridge in 1994 said it wasn’t dark after the earthquake because Balboa Blvd. had been turned into a river of fire from broken gas lines (it’s pretty steep in that part of the San Fernando Valley).

      • August 24, 2014 at 9:03 am

Thanks so much, arapaho415. I see your great post above. You make several excellent points. Daylight soon will likely reveal more damage.

Having lived through Loma Prieta when I lived in Santa Cruz, it’s just terrifying. Once you realize what is happening and your heart stops racing, there’s the damage assessment: lost of power, smell of gas, no cell phone service, fire, damage to roads, buildings, businesses. And then come the aftershocks.

        • 64 arapaho415
          August 24, 2014 at 9:24 am

Love that you were in Santa Cruz, sorry that you were there during the earthquake, which was closer to Santa Cruz than SF, IIRC.

Must have been terrifying to know that as darkness approached you had another 11 hours or so of no power, no water, broken bits all over the place, perhaps a missing pet and no hot meal. No big earthquake is good news, but those that occur when the Loma Prieta did are the hardest for the uninjured.

After the shock of the initial earthquake, the aftershocks have you on edge for at least a month.

I’ve read that there were more than 10,000 aftershocks from the Northridge quake, and it’s hard to truly relax — you’re on edge because the ground keeps rumbling, the walls and windows shake.

Hope that people in the affected area heeded the constant warnings we Californias get about being prepared (stored water and food that doesn’t need to be heated/refrigerated).

          • August 24, 2014 at 9:31 am

Yes, Loma Prieta was very close to Santa Cruz. Lots of students were so frightened they just left and never returned. One of my student’s girlfriend died. You could see smoke from fire in the distance. We had no water, no electricity, no perishable food for a couple of days. Stores and gas stations were closed due to no electricity. So many aftershocks, you never got a chance to de-stress. People were starting to act a bit crazy. You didn’t know the how bad the real damage unless you had good batteries and could listen via radio. We were shocked to hear GHW Bush was landing by helicopter in a field about 1/4 mile from our house. CRAZY.

              August 24, 2014 at 10:11 am

              Wow.

I don’t remember hearing about the fatalities in Santa Cruz from the LP quake — I must have, just don’t remember now.

Sorry to hear that you knew someone killed by that event.

I understand about people who aren’t from that area leaving.

I worked with a wonderful person who returned to Vermont after a smaller earthquake in this area, in the early 1990s that happened at the end of September — she had just given birth to a beautiful baby boy, was in the maternity ward on the 10th floor of the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Van Nuys/Panorama City and all the televisions secured to the ceiling crashed to the floor — she was desperate to see her newborn baby, but wasn’t allowed to see him right away.

That’s when she and her Mom (visiting from Vermont to help out) decided to return there. Good decision for her, she now has a beautiful home near the Canadian border and her son is the most gracious and beautiful young man. Oh, and BTW, she took her Peruvian-born husband back to Vermont, so there’s a tiny bit of diversity in that tiny New England town, LOL.

What was it Newt said the other day? If Obama was like Reagen people wouldn’t mind him playing golf. I’m glad POTUS isn’t like Reagen, our country would be in worse shape then it was when POTUS took over. The Great Reagen is something the right has made up in their racists extreme radical mind.

EQUIPMENT USAGE…I HAVE FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF THIS BECAUSE MY SPOUSE IS WITH A DEPT…THIS ALL GOES WAY BACK TO THE MATCHES LIT BY TEA PARTY GROUPS AND FRANKLY REPUBLICAN GOVERNANCE IN ALOT OF OUR CITIES…REPUBLICANS HAVE MANAGED TO INCITE SEVERAL WICKED CONSPIRACY THOUGHTS AIMED AT THE PRESIDENT…LEAVING OUT ALL POSSIBLE BULLSHIT…THEY THINK HE IS A TERRORIST AND IS GOING TO HAND US OVER TO ISLAM. THIS IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED…THE ANTI-CHRIST IS IN THE WHITEHOUSE…FROM THAT STEMMED THE BIRTHING OF NATIONWIDE GATHERINGS OF WANNABE RAMBOS…AKA THE MILITIA…RICK PERRY KNOWS ALOT ABOUT THOSE DUMMIES. SINCE 2008′ RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS AND TEA PARTY CRONIES HAVE MANAGED TO BRING THE BOIL TO FESTER IN POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND EVERYWHERE ELSE. THIS IS WHY FERGSON IS VERY IMPORTANT IN EFFORTS TO KEEP THE CALM…ALOT OF THOSE MILITIA MEMBERS ARE JUST WAITING FOR THE POT TO BOIL OVER…THEY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERYTHING THEY CAN GET. THEN WE HAVE ALL THE OTHER EXTREMIST GROUPS ALIVE AND UNFORTUNATELY WELL AND WAITING AS WELL…KKK..THE NAZIS…YOU NAME IT. THIS COUNTRY AS I HAVE STATED BEFORE IS LOCKED IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF HATRED AND FEAR AND IT WON’T TAKE MUCH TO LIGHT THAT FIRE UNLESS WE ARE VERY CAREFUL AND MATURE IN OUR THOUGHT PROCESS.
