Good morning Chips and early TODers. I predict 30 million before election day because excitement is going to build after the Labor Day weekend and more and more people are going to be tuned into the state of individual state races.

I love the photos of our president in that glorious election year of 2008 before we knew what saboteurs the GOP would turn out to be, before we knew the full extent of the economic disaster he would have to face, before Syria, Gaza, Ukraine, ISIS and the endless stresses and dreadful burdens that would be put on our young president. What we learned since then is that no matter what was thrown at our president, no matter how vicious, corrupt and racist the opposition, he would triumph time and time again in his own brilliant, persistent indomitable way. This will be another crisis week for President Obama with terrible decisions to make about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and further bombing in Iraq and possibly Syria. No matter what decision PBO makes, he will be pilloried in the press and by the anti-US Republican Party, but his choice will be the right one and he will, in the end, prevail. In 2008, we hoped Barack Obama was someone we could always trust. In 2014, we know it.

I ALWAYS FEEL GUILTY FOR PBO’S SUFFERING…I KNEW THINGS WOULDN’T BE EASY BECAUSE OF RACSTS BUT I DIDN’T EXPECT HIM TO HAVE TO SUFFER SO MUCH FROM THE IGNORANCE AND ARROGANCE OF THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY!

The journey to preserve Madam CJ Walker’s historic estate
    August 27, 2014 at 3:01 PM

Due to the deeply rooted racism that has been a part of this country since its founding, gentrification and centuries of deliberate erasure of African diaspora culture and history, manyphysical structures that celebrate or acknowledge black achievement have been destroyed or left to rot in the bowels of forgotten history.

Fortunately, people like Brent Leggs of the National Trust for Historic Preservation have dedicated their careers to preserving and honoring the structures that represent a diverse array of cultures and history, including African-American.

It’s one thing to read about a great person of times past but quite another to have a tangible reminder of that person’s existence and legacy.

“Our signature program is National Treasure. We take direct action to remove preservation threats at culturally and nationally significant historic sites in the United States. We provide assistance in legal issues, advocacy, preservation planning and marketing,” said Leggs.

One of Leggs’ current projects is preserving Villa Lewaro, the estate of Sarah Breedlove — a black woman who was born in Louisiana in 1867. She was the daughter of former slaves. Like many black women of the time, she was a domestic who washed clothes. Breedlove went on to become the first female in the United States to earn a million dollars. She is better known as Madam CJ Walker.

For those who have been enjoying the farcical stories about the Republican Party in our county, here’s another installment. The current, retiring office holder (a Republican and long-time committee member) is using the local newspaper to air very dirty laundry about fellow members of the local Republican committee. She claims personal knowledge of adultery, spousal abuse and other salacious sins and names names. At this point, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were a duel at high noon on the courthouse steps. Democrats aren’t always the most unified of party people, but we’re practically singing in 4-part harmony compared to these crazies.

If you want to discourage your base, start slinging mud about your opponent, especially about their private lives — mud slinging about corruption by your opponent might be justified, but most people regard personal attacks as gossip.

This is great news, JackieG — the more this goes on the more discouraged Republican-leaning “Independents” will be to cast their votes for RWNJs.

Hope your gala last weekend (with no rain, to boot!) encouraged more volunteers in the Latino community to get the word out that Barack Obama is the leader of the Democratic party, and to remember that in November when they’ve brought their friends in to vote.

Congratulations Chips on 27 million! It is exciting to know that people all over the U.S. and the world are sharing in this wonderful place. Also old enough on this blog to remember six million…wow!

Thanks for the picture and all that it meant. I remember the absolutely strained, unnatural “expressions of affection” between so many presidential couples, or no expression whatsoever. The Obamas and the Bidens took us to totally new territory, open expression of genuine, joyful love, and how beautiful and refreshing it was, and is.

Thanks to all the bts and Chips for bringing us so many newsy and exciting articles and pictures. This place is a treasure.

    HIS fault again!!

    http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/jobless-claims-inch-lower-remain-below-key-threshold

For several years, those rooting for the U.S. job market to improve found it hard to imagine initial unemployment claims dropping below the 300,000 threshold. Now, it’s happening all the time. Take the latest data from the Labor Department, for example.
The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week remained below 300,000, suggesting little likelihood that a brightening outlook for the labor market will dim anytime soon. Initial claims edged down by 1,000 to 298,000 in the seven days ended Aug. 23 and remained near an eight-year low, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to total 300,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis.

What’s more, the average of new claims over the past month fell by 1,250 to 299,750. The monthly figure smooths out the jumpiness in the weekly data and offers a better look at underlying trends in the labor market.

Here is a happy exception. The story we were all so glad to see yesterday about Medicare costs plunging dramatically, Well, That story is highlighted on Page 3 of the NYTimes.
Page 3! Big story, 2/3 of the page with the helpful graph illustrating how powerful Obamacare has been in getting the USA where we want to go.

yay for PBO, and yay for Obamacare!

Fantastic…every now on then the MSM gets it right. Otherwise their credibility would be completely destroyed, so they have to bait readers with the “truth” to keep them buying. Can’t have story after story about PBO’s golf…and especially now that the American people have said they couldn’t give a rat’s arse about PBO’s playing golf, I guess we won’t be seeing/hearing too much about it in the months to come.

Has this been posted? Connect the dots…

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/27/opinion/thomas-edsall-the-expanding-world-of-poverty-capitalism.html?_r=1

In Orange County, Calif., the probation department’s “supervised electronic confinement program,” which monitors the movements of low-risk offenders, has been outsourced to a private company, Sentinel Offender Services. The company, by its own account, oversees case management, including breath alcohol and drug-testing services, “all at no cost to county taxpayers.”

Sentinel makes its money by getting the offenders on probation to pay for the company’s services. Charges can range from $35 to $100 a month.

The company boasts of having contracts with more than 200 government agencies, and it takes pride in the “development of offender funded programs where any of our services can be provided at no cost to the agency.”

Sentinel is a part of the expanding universe of poverty capitalism. In this unique sector of the economy, costs of essential government services are shifted to the poor.

In terms of food, housing and other essentials, the cost of being poor has always been exorbitant. Landlords, grocery stores and other commercial enterprises have all found ways to profit from those at the bottom of the ladder.

The recent drive toward privatization of government functions has turned traditional public services into profit-making enterprises as well.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Get Married in France

    Aug 28, 2014, 8:50 AM ET

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married Saturday in Chateau Miraval, France, says a spokesman for the couple.

Jolie and Pitt wed Saturday in a small chapel in a private ceremony attended by family and friends. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie also obtained a marriage license from a local California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France.

The couple’s children took part in the wedding. Jolie walked the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox and Pax. Zahara and Vivienne threw petals. Shiloh and Knox served as ring bearers, the spokesman says.

Thanks for commenting about “poverty capitalism.” I replied to you in the wee hours EDT saying that this is an easy-to-understand phrase that should be used more by Dem candidates — a soundbite with real meaning — it’s attention-getting and curious voters will want to know more about its meaning and its local impact.

    What a mor…guy…. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/tom-corbett-liquor-laws-women

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) thinks his state should reform its liquor laws. That way, he argued, women would have an easier job making dinner.

Corbett made the argument in July during an appearance on The Sam Lesante Show. The clip of him making those comments were reposted Tuesday by the Democratic political PAC Fresh Start PA, which supports Corbett’s opponent Tom Wolf (D).

“I think a lot of people want to be able to walk into a grocery store,” Corbett said. “Particularly, a lot of the women, want to be able to go in and buy a bottle of wine for dinner, go down buy a six pack or two six packs, buy dinner, and go home. Rather than what I just described, is at least three stops, in Pennsylvania.”

Sexist, much? Get rid of him, PA!!

CONGRATS on the 27 million hits!! Someone called this an oasis? Couldn’t have said it better…and speaking of August 28, 2008, I was THERE that day, volunteering at Invesco. Walking around in a bright yellow vest, ushering people around, waving enormous flags, whatever they asked me to do. The celebrity line up was unbelievable. Before it all started, we were in the mostly empty stadium, listening to sound checks from Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder. The best part? Talking to the ever reaching and wide range of HUMANITY, people from all over the country, all races, all demographics, a lesbian couple from Virginia, an African American man and his son from North Carolina, a group of 60ish year old gals from California — all united in the absolutely palpable excitement and HOPE. And then when he gave his speech, it was this same varied group with one thing in common: not a dry eye in the house. Strangers hugging each other. It was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Here I am, looking like an utterly emotional goofball: https://www.flickr.com/photos/127303505@N07/?savedsettings=15040415556#photo15040415556
