Night owl chat – Dire Straits

Full disclosure: My brother loved Dire Straits, and tried to get me into them. I never could, until recently. Maybe it’s being middle aged, but their melancholia now appeals to me.

For your night owl pleasure, a bit of Dire Straits.

Was never a fan but I live most music. Giving it a try.

Hi Alma-bee! You can like ‘most music’ for both of us.

      • August 30, 2014 at 10:07 pm

Ugh hate auto correct cause it doesn’t know what I like from what I love and what I live for but chooses to decide for me anyway

Auto correct and I have a standing battle – am tired of telling it I don’t need its suggestions and to simply leave things the way I type them! The nerve of this machine changing stuff I write because it thinks it knows best!

Thank you my dear, I’m trying to. I was so tired of running around that I actually decided not to go out today, but to have offspringtry to find room/apartment info on line.

          • August 30, 2014 at 10:16 pm

In this day and age you can really let your fingers do the walking. Remember when that was just about leafing through a telephone book? Then making a million calls.

‘Remember when that was just about leafing through a telephone book?’

              Nope. I wasn’t born then; I’m Chips’ twin, remember? /all innocence/

              • August 30, 2014 at 10:53 pm

Forever 23. I was just lamenting that my grandmother was born in 1872. Like 142 years ago.

 *You* must be quite old then, Almab! Maybe you meant your great grand-m?

Nope I ain’t that old and yes I meant my grandmother. So stay young vc and chips.

;) ;) Just teasing, Alma-b, as I’m sure you know. I don’t think I’ll ever be as young as Chips even though we are twins.

Have a good night if you’re working, and a better night if you’re at home!

Thanks vc. I am working but it’s quiet.which makes for a long night.

Yes, A-b, I do remember those from my long ago night shift nights. I gave it up fairly quickly and have always privately felt that’s the real reason I’ve never been able to sleep properly at night.

I’m off to try and tempt some sleep, so have a good night whatever comes your way!

For some reason I thought that since people are not labouring this weekend they’d be hanging out here. I guess maybe they are all out enjoying the last long weekend of the summer. Good for all of you!

<3 Dire <3 Straits <3 Oh, and LL? At 45, you are not really quite middle age, rather what we might call "lower middle age"… So, chill, okay??! ;) ;)

    • August 30, 2014 at 10:09 pm

Well, i plan to partake of the coming Singularity, so I’d like to think I’m “upper young”.

      August 30, 2014 at 10:11 pm

This is somewhat funny. The thread seemed slow so I paused and sent you an email, returned, and there you were messing with young Lib_L.

      • 19 MightyPamela
        August 30, 2014 at 10:22 pm

LL is wwaaayyy too upper young for me to play with… He cracks me up when he ‘discovers’ a band who were rocking the world when he was in grade school!! Amusing that he feels so old… In his 40’s! And Chipsticks feels so old in her 20’s (!) … HaHaHaHa! They are just so adorable! :)

        • August 30, 2014 at 10:25 pm

Now now, I knew of this band in grade school. I just never grokked it much until recently. Mark Knoppfler is a mid-sized deity.

          August 30, 2014 at 10:30 pm

Well now, I am not going to say a word about Lib_L’s music discoveries because he has ‘discovered’ many bands/musicians *I* have never heard of. Am not complaining at all but I truly lived most of my life in a cocoon, plus am not really fond of noisy music, nor of classical music, nor…. so

My oldest granddaughter (and I), as well. She’s staying with me for a bit, and since I have the good old Catholic school cursive still going strong (not quite as good as calligraphy), she’s constantly asking me to write out sayings for her wall. Which I love.

        Will I live to see 80 ??

        Here’s something to think about.

With all the changes to the health care system, I recently had to pick a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing ‘fairly well’ for my age. I’m now almost 69.

A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, ‘Do you think I’ll live to be 80?’

He asked, ‘Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?

‘Oh no,’ I replied. ‘I’m not doing drugs, either!’

Then he asked, ‘Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?’

I said, ‘Not much… my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!’

‘Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?’

        ”No, I don’t,’ I said.

He asked, ‘Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex’’?’

        ”No,’I said…

He looked at me and said.. ‘Then, why do you even give a damn?’

I think I read they spent about 3 million on those 30 people – could have provided quite some healthcare for 3 million.

And Jim – I love his turn of phrase – thanks for the link.

We all have our favorites!! This mine.

A three-chord symphony crashes into space
The moon is hanging upside down
I don’t know why it is I’m still on the case
    It’s a ravenous town
And you still refuse to be traced
Seems to me such a waste
And every victory has a taste that’s bittersweet
And it’s your face I’m looking for on every street

Listening to a Welsh person pronouncing the Welsh names is like hearing a sonnet on a summer evening. Just delightful. Thus said – quite handy that they all speak/understand English.

Arrrgghhh. Once I spent a “summer” holiday in Wales – beautiful country, but not much Sun.

The language is one of the remaining *spoken* Celtic languages (that once defined Europe, before the Romans destroyed everything).

According to Calgacus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgacus), another of the Celtic speaking oppressed:

      “Moscow, August 28, 2014

Dear brothers and sisters! Fellow citizens!

Russia is on the verge of disaster! The large-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine which began on August 27 may bring around losses comparable to losses during the war in Afghanistan (several dozen thousands killed), and a possible escalation into a major military conflict in Europe, where the toll will number millions. The ruling regime in Russia has dragged the country into a fratricidal war.

In our opinion, the President of the Russian Federation, grossly violating the Constitution, has committed a state offense under Articles 353 and 354 of the Criminal Code. This gives grounds for bringing him to trial and removing from power.

Under these conditions we encourage the citizens of Russia to:

Express their strong rejection of this fratricidal war with acts of peaceful civil disobedience.
Under the conditions of an undergoing war and until Russian troops are complete withdrawn from Ukraine we want to ask mothers whose sons will be recruited into the armed forces of the Russian Federation in September to remember that they may be sent to war and die in fratricidal slaughter. You have a responsibility to demand the return of your children to Russia if you find out that your son has been sent by the command to fight in Ukraine.
Be prepared to indefinitely hold a peaceful political strike until the end of the war and the removal from power of all those responsible for starting the war and endorsing its management.

      Soldiers and officers!

Be warned that you have every right to refuse to perform clearly criminal orders!
In this difficult time for the country remember the honor of Russian soldiers and officers! Do not shoot your brothers, both Russian and Ukrainian! Think about who your true enemy is, turning you into powerless cannon fodder!
Find the strength to fulfill your duty to protect the people of Russia! The continuation of the fratricidal war will inevitably lead to the disintegration of the country, the loss of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

      Dear brothers and sisters, Ukrainians!

Together with you we mourn those losses that you have suffered and continue to bear because of the criminal policy of the leadership of Russia! We hope for a speedy end to the bloodshed in the long-suffering Ukrainian world!

On the basis of Article 3 of the Constitution of Russia, “the only source of power is the multinational people.” Based on this, we demand the Russian leadership to immediately withdraw Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine!

The Organizing Committee of the Russian Anti-War Movement (RAD)”

Oh, Tzar Vlad, your days are numbered. Only issue is how many die before you’re brought to a just closure.

I heard on CBS radio network news that Ted Cruz whipped up the Americans for Prosperity aka Koch summit blowing a lot of hot air about 2016. He’s delusional enough to run for President again.

Have to admit that I found the 2012 GOP debates entertaining (but seemingly endless) since there was no “horserace” for Dems, but I plan on savoring President Obama’s final year as President in 2016 — will enthusiastically support Gov. Martin O’Malley — one of the few Dems who unabashedly supports this country and our President.

“Dire Straits” (the album – with “Sultans of Swing”) was the last piece of “contemporary” music I bought – since then I have been on nostalgia track – I bought “Hell Freezes Over” from the Eagles after returning from my second coast-to-coast trip in the US (1996). That was about it. Of course, nowadays, I listen to music on YouTube – I do not “buy” music anymore (in the traditional sense of paying for a copy on a medium).

YouTube is awesome – a few months ago I found a live recording of the (already live) parts of Pink Floyd’s “Ummagumma”. It shows the control freek Syd Barrett was – constantly crawling on the ground, adjusting the knobs on his pedals; he didn’t seem to be interested in the audience *at all*.
