When you take a book that tells the true story of what fueled America’s capitalist development – SLAVERY and denigrate it in your review because it tells the truth, you have sick people working for your news outlet.

That The Economist printed a review basically saying Black people were treated like human beings under slavery and pretty much enjoyed it and their white masters were loving and compassionate; and puritanism, pull yourself up by your bootstraps, and independent nature of whites is how America became the force it is, is breathtaking. The fact that they were shamed into issuing a half-assed apology says a lot about The Economist.

America had free labor from African-Americans for hundreds of years but suddenly, we’re supposed to conveniently pretend slavery never happened?

      September 5, 2014 at 10:45 am

This entire book should be pulled off the shelves and banished. APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED!!!!!!

      • 23 Nerdy Wonka
        September 5, 2014 at 10:47 am

The book wasn’t the problem. It was the review of the book by The Economist. The book told the true story of American capitalism and its connection to slavery.

    • September 5, 2014 at 12:05 pm

The publication said that it was “withdrawing the review,” but included a link to the original text “in the interests of transparency.”

Name the author of the review. That would be real transparency.

I was watching the Today show this morning and Chucky Todd was up there, guess what? I watched him. I guess I was preparing myself for MTP Sunday when POTUS will be up there. It was a struggle to listen to Chucky, but I did it. Be proud of me. :)

You’re a better person than me, annieb.

After I saw upChuck subbing for Chris Matthews on Tweety’s old half-hour show during the 2012 campaign, I literally cannot stomach the sight of him.

upChuck snarled when he hissed “nasty” to describe that effective “Firms” ad for President Obama — the one that had only music (IIRC) and the sound of flags flapping in the breeze, while showing empty offices in the US as R-money would ship jobs overseas.

I’ll watch TOD for the commentary on MTP this Sunday.

Following GWB’s 2003 Iraq disaster the US was greatly disliked around the world. Without PBO at the helm many of the countries joining in the coalition against ISIL wouldn’t have found the support to justify it at home even if the various leaders desperately wanted to. The ONLY reason they can do it now, so freely, and with minimal discussion is because PBO is so personally popular around the world – in most cases MORE popular than the many of the world leaders joining the alliance. The RWNJ’s plus the many of the blowhard Dem’s (Mrs Feinstein) don’t get that. Good luck with getting this much support once PBO leaves – fools.

All kidding aside the media sure is talking about the jobs numbers today. When they were over 200,000 they rarely mention the jobs numbers.

          • 49 anniebella
            September 5, 2014 at 11:32 am

All they are doing is trying to make it into something negative.

            • 50 otter 44
              September 5, 2014 at 11:44 am

There is a seasonal tendency for the September jobs numbers (based on August performance ) to be revised upwards by about 75,000. there is usually an issue with the seasonal adjustment. Each year the auto factories reconfigure the production lines. People are temporarily laid off and then rehired this tends to skew the numbers. I have no explanation why this is not factored into the estimates. Any way the pundtoads do not understand economics.

            • September 5, 2014 at 11:56 am

Yes – I’ve noticed that – only emphasize negative news if it can be pinned on PBO. But seriously Anniebella – yes the Clintons have friends OS (political friends – other leaders, etc) but nothing like the way ordinary citizens feel about PBO. France is a great example – they can be very anti US but they LOVE PBO – because he’s smart and chic. So it makes it easier for Hollande to have an alliance with him -irrespective of NATO and France’s domestic security concerns. Politicians are always concerned with their poll numbers and re election. They aren’t exactly profiles in courage most of the time. PBO makes it easier b/c people everywhere adore him and wish HE were their president/leader. It’s what shocks foreigners about some US attitudes to PBO and the general contempt and disrespect that fellow colleagues/racist loons display towards him. And from where I stand that includes idiots like Jon Stewart. You know I found Jon Stewart’s segment on Ferguson (the one everyone was raving about) particularly offensive because whilst calling out the casual racism displayed by Fox, cops, etc towards AA’s he seemed to forget his own disrespectful familiarity that he has displayed towards the president. I don’t ever remember him calling that megaphony Bill Clinton a dick, or dude (or whatever vile thing he said to PBO).

I just don’t understand the economy? I honestly now believe if you give the companies what they want, 0% tax rate, that they’d hire many more people.
These companies are like Spoiled children, defiant until they get their way.
I just think we should be doing a lot better than what we are doing.
Something else is slowing things down and on purpose.

    • September 5, 2014 at 11:17 am

you need higher wages, those at the top to pay their fair share in tax and more infrastructure. that’s what’s slowing things down – and it’s all easily fixed if there were sensible people in power who weren’t beholden to special interests – i.e no republican 1% fan boys and girls.

    • September 5, 2014 at 11:53 am

No they wouldn’t. It would give them an excuse to cut the workforce down to even less. 200k for 5 straight months followed by a 142k is not bad at all.

The reason we are not doing a lot better is because we have a House of Representatives which only works three days a month and has never actually passed a jobs bill. That will do it every time.

He only has a strategy because the media shamed him into getting one. Sure given his history PBO was working on a strategy the whole time but still…ridiculing his tan suit forced the President to come up with a plan. Or was it ridiculing his lack of a plan forced him to wear the tan suit?

A question, if the U.S. decide to go after ISIS in Syria would any U.S. planes be flying over Syria and would that put America pilots in danger? Everyone is telling POTUS that he need to do something about ISIS, but they aren’t saying what it is he should do. Next time a Republican or Democrat voice those words I hope someone will ask them tell us what is it he should do?

    • 67 japa21
      September 5, 2014 at 11:52 am

This is what people don’t understand. Iraq requested our assistance which makes it perfectly appropriate and legal to do what we are doing there.

Syria is a sovereign nation which has not asked us to intervene. Doing bombing runs there would first of all, violate their air space. Secondly, Syria does have an air force which could, legally, decide to go after our pilots.

A better strategy, which I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t being followed, is to work to get intelligence on ISIS in Syria and provide it to the Syrian government so they can be more accurate with going afetr ISIS specifically.

The last question from the WSJ “reporter.” —-“Some people Say” – – That’s a whole bunch of crap!

      • September 5, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Yep, the last one was not as good. So easy to begin by “some people say”. But it’s true certain democratic candidates in purple and red states may be nervous that executive action by the president could be used, DEMAGOGUED by their republican opponents. I don’t mind questions about the “political” aspect of things instead of the policy aspect, as long as those questions are not formulated as a “gotcha” question. I didn’t sense that from the WSJ reporter. She didn’t seem arrogant nor nasty. She simply asked the president if he was considering politics in his decision on immigration.

I heard it. “soon” may mean next week, or the week after that.

Not to mention that the ACA premiums for 2015 are coming in LOWER than 2014 in city after city.

RW GOP and RW Dems are running out of real estate every single day. If they keep opposing and keeping their distance from PBO they will look increasingly insane to most of the American people.

Three questions focused on the purpose of the event and one about U S centric subject, immigration. No snarky comments or tones, and the bit about not acting until after the election, PBO ignored that and repeated what he has often said about what he intends to do about immigration in the absence of congressional action and within the legal limits of his office. Overall a good press conference. I found it interesting that he only called on female reporters.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/09/05/mary-landrieu-residency_n_5772496.html?utm_hp_ref=ap

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu will remain on the Nov. 4 ballot in Louisiana after a state judge dismissed a lawsuit Friday that had claimed the Democrat was not qualified to run for re-election because she lives full-time in Washington.

District Judge Wilson Fields ruled that Republican state Rep. Paul Hollis’ lawsuit claiming the three-term senator didn’t meet the residency qualifications to represent Louisiana was premature.

Fields said the U.S. Constitution clearly describes the qualifications required of a senator, saying the person must be a resident of the state at the time of the election. The judge said that means a challenge could be filed only after a winner is chosen by voters, in either the Nov. 4 election or the Dec. 6 runoff.

“She has not been elected, and if I read the Constitution in its plain language it says ‘when elected,'” Fields told Hollis and his lawyer.
