That New Olive Garden is in my neighborhood. But the CEO is some kind of RW jerk, isn’t he?

      September 30, 2025 at 4:08 pm

Hadn’t heard about the CEO. But this reminds me of when the Sopranos TV show was popular and an acquaintance asked me, “Aren’t you offended by the portrayal of Italian Americans in the Sopranos?” (I am half Italian). I responded, “No, the Sopranos doesn’t offend me; the Olive Garden commercial that shows the guy saying the food is just like his Italian grandmother used to make - that offends me.” :-)

170 new jobs is good for the neighborhood. This has been a vacant lot (right off the expressway) as long as I can remember. So I’m a tad torn.

Yeah, I understand that. You don’t want the perfect to be the enemy of the good. A restaurant going into a long-time vacant lot is just one more sign that PBO’s relentless efforts to bring back our economy are finally paying off.

Interesting how easy it is to be ideologically pure when it doesn’t touch you personally. This is a good thing for the neighborhood, so I am weighing my actions. I’m sure Mr. 57 and I will eat there a few times.

I am torn too 57. When an Olive Garden was opened in Inglewood, CA I was glad because all the employees were AA and the community really needed a decent restaurant in the area. There was only one sit down restaurant until an Olive Garden and Chili’s was opened. These restaurants stay busy and keep dollars in the neighborhood. The middle class families would have to drive to neighboring non-minority areas for a decent sit down restaurant.

LL’s thoughts about oil prices from earlier thread:

“A thought about oil prices crashing.

Perhaps this has been coordinated between the Arab states and the WH to take money away from ISIL. Part of the reason oil prices are nosediving is because of increased production from OPEC.”

Hello TOD Family. I did some phone banking for the DEM party this past weekend to remind registered Dems to vote Nov 4th. The local DEM office had us calling folks in our area who were newly registered and had last voted in 2012. The people were all ages from 90’s to mid-20’s. I called about 80 people and spoke to 10 but left voice messages for most of them. Some of the older women appear to have changed registrations to Democrat, I can’t believe these women never voted before. I called this lady who lives in a “red” area of SoCal and I think it was either her husband or boyfriend who answered. He asked why I was calling and I told him to remind her to vote and to vote for Gov. Jerry Brown. He got so mad and said he “hated Democrats” and to not call anymore. She fortunately had a mobile number so I called and left her a voice message to vote in Nov and to support Gov. Brown. This is not the first time I called a spouse or girlfriend and the male insisted I got the wrong number because “they” were Republicans. I got this a lot during the 2008 & 2012 presidential election making calls for OFA, GOTV for PBO. Many women changed their registrations in secret from their republican husbands to vote Democratic. I have a hope that women, even republican women will come out to vote against the GOP.

That’s interesting jojo, The results of the Mississippi vote against the personhood bill showed a phenomenon that I think continues to be true. I think a lot of married women who get polled or called on the phone say one thing in front of their conservative husbands, and then when they get in the voting booth, vote their true feelings about birth control, etc.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will announce this afternoon that the first case of Ebola has been diagnosed in the United States. DALLAS – A Texas man just back from West Africa has been confirmed as having the first case of Ebola to be diagnosed in the U.S.

HF2 posits that GOP/Secret Service are working in tandem to prove that “government doesn’t work,” and this article only serves to confirm that theory. Washington Examiner is a Breitbart-like RW rag.

PBO does not have “low poll numbers.” First of all, PBO has the highest approvals of any incumbent politician right now (and that’s not factoring the rigged and excessive polls, jacked up samples designed to bring down his numbers).

And when you take all of those into account, PBO’s true approvals probably are about 10pts higher than is cited in those polls.

Prayers are fine, but what this President mostly needs is:

      1. A competent SS operation, from top to bottom;

      2. A congress whose primary goals are to help advance this country socially, and economically, and keep its citizens safe, not obstruct the President at every turn;

      3. A media whose job is is to impart information objectively, not to promote one-sided propaganda fueled by RW memes, lies and hateful/racist rhetoric.

I don’t know what the problem is with the Secret Service, whether they need more agents, better training or more effective and professional leadership, but there obviously is too much sloppiness, too many lapses. It is frightening, to say the least. I hold my breath every time I see PBO out in a crowd but always assumed that the SS knew what they were doing and he was protected to the utmost. With so many nuts and so much craziness all about these days, with the threat level against PBO so high, big changes are needed and needed now. These incidents are inexcusable. And I don’t care who appointed whom. I want PBO safe at all times—-every minute—-whatever it takes.

Heard a little of Director Pierson’s responses to Congress earlier. She said budget cuts from the GOP-forced sequestor has left them 500 people short of optimal levels. Doesn’t excuse grossly negligient individual action by agents on White House and Presidential security detail, but certainly adds important context.

Don’t you find it a bit *curious* that these media issues involving 1) Benghazi, 2)VA deaths and 3) Secret Service all involved an element of deliberate under-funding by the House GOP?

Don’t you find it strange that in all the cases, the focus has been less on the safety/well-being of the victims (or potential victims) and more on the
Adminstrators/Obama appointees/WH, with calls for someone to be fired, but no real concern about the overall performance of the agency and the structural and funding issues that caused the problem in the first place?

Don’t you find it curious that the same media & GOP tried the same thing with the NSA/CIA (Snowden and his leaks), HHS (ACA website glitches), and DOJ (Fast & Furious) but were unsuccessful?

Unfortunately, HF, this has been the standard operating practices for the GOP, the House, and the media since President Obama was elected President, and the 2010 midterm elections gave republicans control of the house.

We can’t let the media drive these stories anymore. We should avoid attacking the current FBI Director. We have to wait, until we learn more facts, not those that are getting leaked by unnamed sources.

  42. 118 hopefruit2
    September 30, 2025 at 6:03 pm

Over the next several weeks, I suspect the MSM will be coming out with a lot more drip drip drip reports of instances where the SS did not keep the President safe. Obviously, this is a strategy which has been planned by a few moles in SS, working in tandem with the GOP in congress and their friends in the media, so its no accident all these stories are coming out all at once - and the timing right before a major election is even more suspect.

Here’s my suggestion: Don’t take the media’s bait - this is an effort to distract people from the real issues of the day and the upcoming midterms. This is not about concern for the President’s safety - in fact, the opposite is true. The media’s true desire (like the GOP) to make people think that PBO has no control of his immediate surroundings and is an incompetent President who appoints the wrong people for important jobs.

I think we should stop retweeting these media reports, or posting them here. And stop with the “OMG!” on Twitter - you’re playing directly in the GOP/MSM’s hands with that reaction….Until I hear a VERIFIED report that the President (and/or his family members) has been injured or killed, I will ignore these media reports going forward.

I’m pretty sure that the President is well aware of all these things we’re now hearing about, and so I’m taking my cues from PBO. He’s going about his day, doing the people’s work. He and FLOTUS address the issues as they occur and I’m confident that they will take the necessary precautions to keep themselves and their girls safe. We cannot allow fear driven by the media and GOP to distract us and derail us.

Notice in all of the MSM reports - there is absolutely ZERO mention of the sequestration’s devastating impact on SS funding - and how understaffed the SS has become as a direct result of the GOP’s sequester.

That tells me all I need to know about the MSM’s agenda.

        • 123 Lovepolitics2008
          September 30, 2025 at 8:06 pm

We should tweet them like mad and shame them for not talking about this. Yes they have an agenda. But they are also extremely lazy. And find it more “exciting” to talk about lapses of security. Let’s not forget they’re addicted to sensationalism. They’re NEVER interested in analyzing the causes of problems. Not sexy to study budget numbers, and explain them to the public. Much more “exciting” to talk about a man with a gun getting near the president, to research his background etc. To be fair, that incident in the elevator is indeed “news”. They have to talk about it; the problem is, AS USUAL, that they don’t go deeper, especially if it would put the republicans in bad light.

Funny you should put your position this way, Hopef. I was thinking as I read the related comments on my way down the thread that those ‘breaking’ the stories could stop now as the point was made with the 2011 and 2014 stories. Those two used up my outrage so there is nothing more for these newly discovered ‘investigative’ reports to milk. I’m siding with you that ‘we should stop retweeting these media reports, or posting them here. And stop with the “OMG!” on Twitter’.

“Don’t take the media’s bait – this is an effort to distract people from the real issues of the day and the upcoming midterms…” I agree hopefruit. Distract and Discourage is in full force for at least the next month.

As to the President’s safety, it has and always will be a concern. While we question the timing of the breaches that are being leaked — no matter if it was a lax in following procedures or a deliberate act of sabotage — the fact remains that it happened. The procedures in place to protect the First Family and the White House should have prevented these breaches — even if collusion was involved. The GOP may not be sincere in their concern for the President’s safety, but Democrats in the hearing also expressed outrage and concern. I believe that overall the SS agents are adept at their job and conscientious in carrying out their duty. But if there are any bad apples in the barrel, they need to be identified and removed.

As I stated earlier, the President is the one who will make a decision about his satisfaction with the job the SS and its leadership are doing. I agree, hopefruit, that we should take our cue from him. We know that neither he, nor the mom-in-chief are taking this lightly.

“As to the President’s safety, it has and always will be a concern”

Indeed swbluega. But my point is that none of these media reports we’re now hearing are out of concern for PBO’s safety. And retweeting them and posting them and reacting to them is not in any way shape or form going to enhance or improve the SS’s operations or increase PBO’s safety.

          September 30, 2025 at 7:38 pm

Oh yeah. We know that the media’s agenda has nothing to do with the President’s safety. All about someone(s) getting their moment of fame. And now that the awareness has been raised, I trust that those who *can* do something about it *are* doing something about it. And we can refocus on the things *we* can do something about….GOTV.

Another thing I wanted to add is that any media report/discussion of the SS situation that does NOT mention the effects of the GOP’s sequestration, de-funding and subsequent severe under-staffing of the SS, is not a serious/honest discussion.

America has come to the rescue. But even if the soldiers do a great job, it’s no realistic to think that they can have absolute control. Unless you completely close the borders of the countries affected. Or you perform blood tests on every single passenger who boards a plane in one of those countries.

I think there will be a few cases all around the world. The good news is that the majority of countries are well equipped to face that.

My big concern: ISIS must have had plenty of time to move those weapons in civilian areas, in schools, mosques, etc. They know that westerners have more ethics than them and wouldn’t dare bomb a school without warning.

While I feel good that people are standing up for their rights, my biggest concern, Bobfr, is how do you stop this ‘without losing face’ on either side?

          • 150 Bobfr (@Our4thEstate)
            September 30, 2025 at 7:26 pm

The natural course of events of any revolution is that one side ‘loses face’ and frequently much more, VC, as you know.

The one act that might, just barely, allow both sides to save face is if GS & Pres Xi Jinping approved that the people of Hong Kong are allowed to vote for the list of candidates for CEO.

I doubt if he’ll do it. So, we now will have the opportunity to witness just how determined the people of Hong Kong are to change the course of history. They certainly have more leverage than the folk in Tiananmen Square had.

I missed the fact there was a viable list of candidates (separate from the one China approved)? I can’t see the government making a concession and saving face that way either, yet I can’t see an end apart from the TSquare-type. This is one of those times when I wouldn’t mind wishing away the hours between now and a workable resolution.

So far I have heard that the Director of the SS was ” slammed ” ” ripped” and ” pummeled ” at the hearing today.

Sounds violent….someone needs to be arrested for battery.

Heard someone (?) on Tweety introduce the possibility that the ebola patient knew he was exposed in Liberia and came here purposely for the superior health care in dealing with this disease. Don’t know if this is irresponsible reporting or a real possibility.

It’s the end of the work day and in some parts of the world, the end of the day. I turned on teevee and due to the crazy news media is staying away from MSNBC and other news except here at TOD. I am watching Crimson Tide with my favs Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. I have watched this movie several times and just realized that the late James Gandolfini is in the movie. I did not have cable when Sopranos was on the air but I did see it in reruns. I really liked James Gandolfini as an actor and have watched several movies he was in before his passing.

OT: Yardarm gave us a list of historic facts and one was today was Deborah Kerr’s birthday and TMC has been playing many of her movies. A movie I never saw before was with Clark Gable and Deborah Kerr called “The Hucksters”. I love old movies and I am so excited when I see one I have never seen before and watched intently. I did not know my birthday was the day before Deborah Kerr’s.

PBO has to fly into the smaller Gary, In. airport when he visits Chgo tomorrow. Both Chgo airports, OHare and Midway, are still not fully functional from fire at the air traffic control tower.
