So, a hep cat like me should have been a die hard Television fan. After all, only The Velvet Underground has a bigger reputation at being a pioneer in punk / post-punk. But, though I knew of them by reputation, I had never listened to them.
Until two days ago.
Their album “Marquee Moon” lives up to all the hype. It has weird time signatures. It has sublime guitar riffs. It’s loaded with melody. It took the energy of punk and infused it with soaring musicianship. And it is tonight’s Night Owl Chat.

Versailles, YUCK! For me, the best two are: Havana Mania in Redondo Beach, and El Rincon Criollo in Culver City.

Hi MadameSoph. Thank you so much for this. I had not heard nor seen this documentary. I will look for it and watch it. The music is so fantastic. My neighbors that I am very close to are from Cuba. They have been in this country since the early 60’s are Americans now but they are very much tied to and proud of their rich Cuban heritage. They have invited me to many of their parties and gatherings and the music, dancing, and food is wonderful. They make their Cuban Flan for me every year and other authentic dishes that are just wonderful.

One of the things that bothers me the most about the MSM being able to say whatever they want (then retroactively fit manipulated statistics to “prove” their point — looking at you, @EzraKlein) is that they haven’t been challenged about the “young people won’t buy medical insurance” meme.
Whoever believes this pile of BS has to be male.
Any female who is or was of child-bearing age, knows that the regular visits to the ob-gyn are a fact of life (unless you’re Joyce Dugger, but most young women don’t aspire to have 23 children).
So these mythical young people who aren’t interested in health insurance must overwhelmingly male.
You got that right arapaho. When I was in my 20s, first thing I wanted to know about a job other than salary was does it have health insurance. If I could’ve afforded being able to buy it on my own without being tied to a job that I didn’t particularly like, damn straight I would’ve.
Arapaho, I was just shredding today (have like 15 years of stuff to shred that I have been putting off and decided to finally dive in) and I came across an appointment reminder from the Planned Parenthood/free clinic that used to be my source for annual female check-ups before I had insurance. Those clinics were the only source of female check-ups, birth control, etc. for me and for most of my friends during our 20’s and even our 30’s if we didn’t have insurance through our jobs. Young women get it, I guarantee.

I used free clinics as a college student, then, like Dudette, was interested only in jobs with medical insurance, which is pretty standard if you work for a large corporation.
I’ve been an Independent Contractor for most of my adult life. For the brief time I had a job with insurance; I remember a co-worker and I trying to be sly and still get an appointment with PP because we hadn’t met our deductible. Being a woman is expensive :-)
amazing thing is that the list is just a small sampling. that list could go on and on, yet they still feel obligated to say “maybe some supporters don’t feel he’s done enough…” and the usual blah blah blah. mission accomplished for the owners of “the news.”

Hillary Clinton Open to GOP Obamacare Demand

Hillary Clinton signaled she might be open to repealing a key component of Obamacare during a speech Wednesday at a medical device conference in Chicago.
Since the passage of the landmark health care bill, Republicans have wanted to kill a 2.3 percent excise tax on devices such as defibrillators and pacemakers, usually paid by the devices’ manufacturer or importer. The money it raises – an estimated $29 billion over a decade – is central to the financing of Obamacare, and the White House opposes its repeal.
In a paid appearance before the Advanced Medical Technology Association, or AdvaMed, Clinton told a ballroom filled with more than 2,000 industry representatives that they “have an argument to make” when it comes to repealing the tax. “We have to look and see what are the pluses and minuses,” she said. “I don’t know what the right answer about the tax is.”

While looking at the spectacular photograph in this article, I got to thinking that what makes Los Angeles unique in the USA is that it doesn’t rise abruptly from the shoreline.
Folks who have driven the spectacular Highway 1 from central CA north know the huge cliffs that often hug the US west coast.
San Francisco and Seattle have steep hills for pedestrians to climb. Even San Diego (where I was raised) rises pretty abruptly once you climb out of the flat area, which used to be the San Diego River and is now Mission Valley.
And Los Angeles has such an abundance of flat, arable and buildable land courtesy of the mighty Los Angeles River. People joke about the concrete “river,” but it had to be tamed to house people. See: Los Angeles flood 1938.
The enormous San Gabriel mountains are responsible for the flat land known as the Los Angeles basin. If they were less imposing, the natural runoff (i.e., river) from the mountains would be far less impressive (e.g., San Diego).
There are probably other places in the world that have mountains that are almost 12,000 feet rising above an ocean, but I don’t know where they are.
I mention this because during the last time we had rain for an extended period of time (I think it was February 2005 or 2006), I traveled on the 210 freeway, across the bridge that spans the normally dry LA River, and could not believe the roar and the power of the surging water under the freeway bridge, which I think is about 2 miles long. It was definitely a reminder of the power of nature, and the awesome power of unchecked water.

From now on when I wake up, drive around town, I will remember PBO for preserving my gorgeous mountains. I wake up to this almost exact picture everyday.
Where else do you see palm trees set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains? Missed them last winter. Hope we get to see more this coming one.
