So, a hep cat like me should have been a die hard Television fan. After all, only The Velvet Underground has a bigger reputation at being a pioneer in punk / post-punk. But, though I knew of them by reputation, I had never listened to them.
Until two days ago.
Their album “Marquee Moon” lives up to all the hype. It has weird time signatures. It has sublime guitar riffs. It’s loaded with melody. It took the energy of punk and infused it with soaring musicianship. And it is tonight’s Night Owl Chat.

Hey LL, been wanting to ask your opinion about where to find the best Cuban food in Greater LA? (Besides your house, of course). Done both the Venice and Valley Versailles and know about Porto’s. What should I check out?
Versailles, YUCK! For me, the best two are: Havana Mania in Redondo Beach, and El Rincon Criollo in Culver City.
Also, El Floridita in Hollywood.
Three new to try! Thanks LL!
Thanks LL I LOVE Cuban food especially if it is authentic. These two are new to me and will try. Also, I would like you to consider having another (if you have already done it) a Cuban music nite. I watched The Chef and The Perez Family on cable and there was so much gooood music. I am hooked.
I second that JoJo! I just about wore out my Buena Vista Social Club CD when it came out. I’ll have to dig that out again…
Did you ever see that Documentary? It was fantastic.
Here are the guys performing:
Here is the trailer:
Hi MadameSoph. Thank you so much for this. I had not heard nor seen this documentary. I will look for it and watch it. The music is so fantastic. My neighbors that I am very close to are from Cuba. They have been in this country since the early 60’s are Americans now but they are very much tied to and proud of their rich Cuban heritage. They have invited me to many of their parties and gatherings and the music, dancing, and food is wonderful. They make their Cuban Flan for me every year and other authentic dishes that are just wonderful.
“The Liberian ambassador in Washington fears his country could be close to collapse from the Ebola outbreak there. Jeremiah Sulunteh is very frank about the stress this virus is placing on an already fragile nation. Even before this outbreak, Liberia’s healthcare system was woefully inadequate. After years of civil war there were just 50 doctors in the whole country - as the ambassador so poignantly puts it, that’s one doctor for every 70,000 Liberians. No wonder Liberia can’t cope with an epidemic that would strain even the best-equipped country. Now, he says, all that his family and friends want to know, is when will this nightmare end.”

Oops, I posted ALL of the numbers. [my bad… NOT]
Dudette,
One of the things that bothers me the most about the MSM being able to say whatever they want (then retroactively fit manipulated statistics to “prove” their point — looking at you, @EzraKlein) is that they haven’t been challenged about the “young people won’t buy medical insurance” meme.
Whoever believes this pile of BS has to be male.
Any female who is or was of child-bearing age, knows that the regular visits to the ob-gyn are a fact of life (unless you’re Joyce Dugger, but most young women don’t aspire to have 23 children).
So these mythical young people who aren’t interested in health insurance must overwhelmingly male.
You got that right arapaho. When I was in my 20s, first thing I wanted to know about a job other than salary was does it have health insurance. If I could’ve afforded being able to buy it on my own without being tied to a job that I didn’t particularly like, damn straight I would’ve.
Arapaho, I was just shredding today (have like 15 years of stuff to shred that I have been putting off and decided to finally dive in) and I came across an appointment reminder from the Planned Parenthood/free clinic that used to be my source for annual female check-ups before I had insurance. Those clinics were the only source of female check-ups, birth control, etc. for me and for most of my friends during our 20’s and even our 30’s if we didn’t have insurance through our jobs. Young women get it, I guarantee.
Exactly, MadameSoph.
I used free clinics as a college student, then, like Dudette, was interested only in jobs with medical insurance, which is pretty standard if you work for a large corporation.
I’ve been an Independent Contractor for most of my adult life. For the brief time I had a job with insurance; I remember a co-worker and I trying to be sly and still get an appointment with PP because we hadn’t met our deductible. Being a woman is expensive :-)
amazing thing is that the list is just a small sampling. that list could go on and on, yet they still feel obligated to say “maybe some supporters don’t feel he’s done enough…” and the usual blah blah blah. mission accomplished for the owners of “the news.”
Exactly, 4mf44. It’s just a smattering of all the things PBO has achieved. Imagine how awesome the next two yrs will be after we win full control of the Congress!!
Oooh! Gonna pass this one on for sure! Thanks Dudette!
The facts don’t lie (only pundits, Repubs, whiners, etc. do :-) :
Peak unemployment, October 2009: 10 percent
Unemployment rate now: 5.9 percent
Consecutive private sector job growth: 55 months
Osama bin Ladens alive 2009: 1
Osama bin Ladens alive 2014: 0
Love it, MS. Hey, you should tweet that! :-)
I don’t tweet. It would be my undoing, I’m sure! I lost respect for many I used to admire after they tweeted out 140 characters of stupid which, I am sure, seemed brilliant to them at the time. I’m humble enough to know I wouldn’t be immune to a similar f…up :-) )
But thanks for putting the whole list here - made it easier to put into an email :-)
:-)
thanks for posting, NW. And now for me Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz… see y’all on the flip.
Night Brother LL! :-)
Oooo baby, I sure do love My President! He’s gettin’ done, ain’t he? :-D
Hillary Clinton Open to GOP Obamacare Demand
Oct 8, 2025 4:04 PM CDT
Hillary Clinton signaled she might be open to repealing a key component of Obamacare during a speech Wednesday at a medical device conference in Chicago.
Since the passage of the landmark health care bill, Republicans have wanted to kill a 2.3 percent excise tax on devices such as defibrillators and pacemakers, usually paid by the devices’ manufacturer or importer. The money it raises – an estimated $29 billion over a decade – is central to the financing of Obamacare, and the White House opposes its repeal.
In a paid appearance before the Advanced Medical Technology Association, or AdvaMed, Clinton told a ballroom filled with more than 2,000 industry representatives that they “have an argument to make” when it comes to repealing the tax. “We have to look and see what are the pluses and minuses,” she said. “I don’t know what the right answer about the tax is.”

She could not get it done under her husband’s presidency so she wants to dismantle it under her own….She does not get my vote. I am going to work behind the scenes to get O’Malley elected. I AM OFFICALLY DONE WITH THE CLINTONS.
I’m with you n the O’Malley tent, jojo!
… or Biden if he runs.
Me, too. On both counts.
Me too…I am all in for Joe Biden if he runs.
For west coast TODers (or TODers located someplace other than the east coast, Midwest US).
While looking at the spectacular photograph in this article, I got to thinking that what makes Los Angeles unique in the USA is that it doesn’t rise abruptly from the shoreline.
Folks who have driven the spectacular Highway 1 from central CA north know the huge cliffs that often hug the US west coast.
San Francisco and Seattle have steep hills for pedestrians to climb. Even San Diego (where I was raised) rises pretty abruptly once you climb out of the flat area, which used to be the San Diego River and is now Mission Valley.
And Los Angeles has such an abundance of flat, arable and buildable land courtesy of the mighty Los Angeles River. People joke about the concrete “river,” but it had to be tamed to house people. See: Los Angeles flood 1938.
The enormous San Gabriel mountains are responsible for the flat land known as the Los Angeles basin. If they were less imposing, the natural runoff (i.e., river) from the mountains would be far less impressive (e.g., San Diego).
There are probably other places in the world that have mountains that are almost 12,000 feet rising above an ocean, but I don’t know where they are.
I mention this because during the last time we had rain for an extended period of time (I think it was February 2005 or 2006), I traveled on the 210 freeway, across the bridge that spans the normally dry LA River, and could not believe the roar and the power of the surging water under the freeway bridge, which I think is about 2 miles long. It was definitely a reminder of the power of nature, and the awesome power of unchecked water.
PBO is my hero!
From now on when I wake up, drive around town, I will remember PBO for preserving my gorgeous mountains. I wake up to this almost exact picture everyday.
Where else do you see palm trees set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains? Missed them last winter. Hope we get to see more this coming one.
I owe you a Joe Biden post from this exhilarating and exhausting day, but it will have to wait for tomorrow. Suffice it to say I got my genuine Joe hug and kiss after my speech at the Biden/Merkley rally AND I told him he has an ardent fan club at The Obama Diary which he should definitely check out. That man knows how to work a rope line! Here’s how he celebrated a successful rally on the way back to the airport:
Judith! Watched you today! You Rock!
On TV or at the Convention Center?! Thanks, Madame Soph!
Wow! How exciting Judith! You must be floating on cloud nine. What a day to cherish! Thanks for plugging the TOD family here too! Hope he (or his staff) gets to check us out! I’ve gotta go back a see you in action! You GO Girl!
[waving…] :-D Hi Mr. Vice President! Love you! :-D
How cool is that!!!
I knew @VP would not be able to resist hugging the two adorable women who introduced him!
Looking forward to your updates tomorrow, definitely get some well-deserved rest. Today must have been exhausting (but exhilarating) for you.
I missed the event live, hope that TODville will have some links tomorrow too.
And love @JeffMerkley’s tweet!
OK - stupid question: How do I email Chips some photo files and a video from the local news? Is it [email protected] or something else? HELP!
Judith, DM me on Twitter and I will give you her email address. I’m not sure she wants it shown here. @forus50 on twitter.
Thanks!!
This is on the front page of @nytimes now.

Updates on @jeffersonobama twitter timeline.
a few tweets in my TL had me wondering what some prominent rightwingers were excited about tonight;
after a few follow ups I deduced that their shinny “new” toy is the Washington Post article by Carol D. Leonnig and David Nakamura that they posted a couple of hours ago. it is a re-telling of the USSS issues in Colombia and trying hard to recreate a WH “scandal”;
I will be on the look out for who in the rest of the media will run with it
The WH Press Secretary issued a tweet about that tonight. If I weren’t so sleepy, I’d post it for you!
Found this:
Your Moment of Nerd…
… Didn’t you just know THAT tweet was coming? :-)
GE all.
Not good:
Reports say this young man was shot 16 times.
Last tweets I saw a while ago said to be careful running with details of some of the early reports … but it’s horrendous, nevertheless.
I see #16times is already trending on Twitter.
I’ve come under attack by The Sleep Monster. Afraid I must surrender. But first, this important message…
Good Night Everybody!
Must read on Pannetta- great smack down
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/10/08/leon-panetta-is-what-s-wrong-with-dc.html?via=desktop&source=twitter
“Now, however, Panetta believes that the president has “lost his way” because since then because he’s shown greater “ambivalence” about using military force. If Obama is willing to “roll up his sleeves” on ISIS he can restore that strong legacy. For Panetta, might always equals right.”
“Panetta likes to present himself an “honest,” “straight-talking,” aw-shucks kind of guy—the son of Italian immigrants who has lived the American Dream. But in reality he is the quintessential example of how Washington corrupts. Principles are conditional and where you sit is where you stand; politics trumps policy, even bad policy that puts American lives at risk; military force is a magic elixir not only in solving international problems but in burnishing one’s public image (though it appears for Panetta that this mainly applies to Democrats); it’s also the most important criteria in how you judge a president’s national security decision-making and his or her requisite strength.”
Now the usual backtracking from some journalists who should know better by now:
He wrote his piece and after a bush back……Now Jonathan has eggs on his face with a 180 piece?
Hmm?
I say, go directly to Blazes.
And if the young man had a gun - is it not the law in the US that people are allowed to carry guns? I assume that only applies to white people
Fox News has a poll that says Roberts in Kansas is now up 1 point over that independent.
Just last week Roberts was down 10 points…
So, according to Fox News, Roberts has gained 11 points in one week???
Their poll came out after CNN/ORC poll yesterday? They had it tied and Brownback with 1% over the Dem.
26 days to GO!
Vote.
Ha, you were so busy tapping your foot, you missed FURST!1! :-)
