    Not sure if anyone remembers, but I used to comment here a while back. I still read a lot here and my better half got into it also and keeps me posted on the goings-on at TOD. Just wanting to thank all y’all who are out there doing the tough field work for this election cycle. All elections are crucial, but this one especially so.

    That first tweet above is something I was pointing out a while back when just in President Obama’s first four years, he had more jobs created than all 12 Bush years combined, and that even includes the first 6-12 months when we were losing jobs each month in the 100s of thousands! If you take out those first 6 months or so when things were in freefall from the Republican created Great Recession, President Obama’s jobs total would be millions more on top of the already great jobs numbers from him.

    Better run before I get roped back into this commenting addiction, but again, thanks again to those refusing to be played by the media and turning into chicken-littles, and instead are working phones, going door-to-door, data entry, and all those things that actually win elections. As the man says, FORWARD!!!

    This Forbes article is talking about the success of Medaid and CHIP enrollments in a way that emphasizes how well the insurance companies are doing. I see this as an instance where corporations going for money is a good thing . Insurance companies have tremendous influence in Congress and they are not going to let anyone take their money away.

    ….Enrollment of Americans in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Programs that contract with health plans is projected to jump by 13.5 million by 2016, according to Avalere Health, a research and advisory services firm on health policy issues tracking implementation of the health law. Avalere’s growth projections also assume 22 states, largely led by Republican governors or legislatures opposed to the law, continue to “opt out of the ACA Medicaid expansion in 2014 and beyond.”….

    ….The stocks of plans with Medicaid businesses have been soaring and that should continue, analysts say….

    I have not heard much about the WV race to replace Senator Rockefeller;

    what happened to all those voters who used to vote for Sen Rockefeller and Sen Bryd and those who voted for Sen Manchin ?

    I would have loved a fight over this seat like we have seen in KY

      Good question. I get so annoyed with these “lifers” like Rockfeller who decide to bail at a critical time.

    • 41 arapaho415
      October 25, 2025 at 9:21 pm

      MSM is barely covering the race, though it’s the only one (I think) that pits two women against each other.

      Republican Shelley Moore Capito has a 16 point advantage over Dem Natalie Tennant, so it’s doubtful this will be a “horserace,” but a given to be a GOP seat.

      WV refuses to adapt to the realities of climate change and, yes, cling to their soul-and-lung-destroying strip and deep pit mining jobs. What they need is federal help to allow older workers to retire with pay, re-train younger workers in renewable energy, and invest in building the infrastructure to support that work.

      Coal pollutes and kills so many people, but it’s the only source of income for so many West Virginians.

    A rant:

    I am 64+ years old. I’ve received requests from healthcare.gov to verify income (we are self-employed) and prove that 64 year old me and 74 year old Mr. 57 are citizens. Notwithstanding that we’ve both been paying taxes since we were about 15 years old. We will file a 2014 tax return - frankly I don’t understand why that isn’t enough to verify income, but whatever.

    Okay. God knows where my birth certificate is, so I’ll get a certified copy. I was born in Milwaukee in 1950. So I go to the Milwaukee County website. There is NO way to order a birth certificate online. Office hours are 9-4:30 M-F. I can order one BY MAIL, for a $20.00 fee, payable by cashier’s check or money order only.

    Okay. People were fluid with their names - names were Anglicized, etc. My mother’s name was “Ann”, but I remember her birth certificate said “Anna”. And she added an “e” to “Anne”, but when? Before I was born? Did my dad use his middle initial? If I don’t have all of these facts, will I get my birth certificate?

    Should I just take a day off of work (which may get me fired), drive up to Milwaukee to do this?

    What do people do who have no access to transportation or for whom $20 is the difference between their medication or voting?

    How effing insane is this?!?!

    Oh - Scott Walker was Milwaukee County Executive Officer before selling Wisconsin to the Koch Bros. You think these procedures started with him, or he decimated the funds in order to run a 21st century government office?

    Fuming. I am fuming.

      Did you call and talk to someone at Healthcare.gov? Isn’t Mr. 57 on Medicare? I would call Healthcare.gov and call the Milwaukee County office and ask your questions before driving there.

      Whoa.

      There’s got to be someone who can help you. Is your congresscritter a Dem? Someone in his office, or perhaps the congresscritter where the Milwaukee hospital is located can help you. That’s what their staff is paid to do.

      Dear 57,

      Will give you the same advice I gave to africa. Go to the White House website and submit these details in a communication to President Obama. In this case, suggest you send the same information to both VP Biden and First Lady Obama.

      Moreover, send the details to Mary Burke and call her campaign HQ and explain the situation.

      Tweet a link to this comment (click on the date time stamp and copy the link) to @Burke4WI and @HHSGov.

      Perhaps Chips or NW can highlight your comment on the front page of a new post, either tonight or tomorrow.

      Hope one or more of these suggestions will help.

    I’m not a statistician, but I think I’m reading this correctly. When I go to Gallop to check President Obama’s approval I see Democrats approving by as much as ever. Liberal Dems 84%. Moderates 71%. Conservative Dems 64%. They show the last 5 polling results and those numbers are about the same if not better across those results. Pure Independents at 30% and Conservatives at 20% are about the same across the 5 sets of data. And from the graphs it looks like the fluctuations in his approvals are reactions to current events among people who are influenced by them. So when anyone is talking about his approvals tanking, to me they are talking about Republicans and low-information voters. His base still has the same huge approval numbers as always.

      Speaking of PO’s approval rating. I made myself read the front page article in the Perspective section of my Sunday paper. Title: American public losing faith in president (That’s in big bold letters.) Underneath is says: Voters also have negative views of Contress and U.S. Supreme Court. Written by Charles Lipson, Chicago Tribune. There is not ONE positive word about PO……all negative, putdowns, promises broken, blah, blah, blah. It is disgusting. Just got back from a phone bank for Udall. (we are in CA). They had a predictive dialer which screens out answering machines and wrong #s so you talk to lots more folks in a short period of time. The entire thing is run from your phone, no need for a computer. You enter the results using your phone. I was really impressed, a volunteer would contact about 40 folks in 2 hours, and they were overwhelming in support of Udall, and many had already voted.

    I love the predictive dialer because you get so much more done in a short period of time.

    I am delighted that Colorado does absentee ballot to everyone, makes it more likely we will have a strong turn out.

    One more little piece of election news - I have a friend who works for NextGen an Environmental PAC which is putting lots of resources into Iowa and sending folks from CA to do canvassing and GOTV. We are getting help from lots of sources.

    So encouraging to hear about all the folks who volunteered today, it really lifts my spirts to read about your efforts.

      Love this, WIW! We used the predictive dialer at a home phone bank today. The only downside I can see is that it is not okay to use to contact cell phone users (FEC rules), so a lot of the folks were way past 30.

    Upton is scrambling. Lawrence is throwing marbles in his path. Mr Clements may well be able to defeat the GOP slug that Upton is …

    “The campaign team released the following fact-check on the Upton campaign’s continued response to the question of the propriety of their response to Mayday.US’s support for Upton’s opponent.

    What’s striking is how the facts continue to, let’s say, evolve.

    At first, it was Upton telling multiple outlets that he had spoken to our large Silicon Valley supporters (that’s an “s” at the end of that word) to complain about their support for Mayday.

    As it dawned on everyone that there was something a bit odd (ethically speaking) about that behavior (at least from a committee chairman with power over the people he was allegedly speaking to), the story morphed.”

    I guarantee you, Reince, Upton or anyone else saw this one coming … including the DCCC ….

    a partial answer to ” tax filing as proof of citizenship” :

    - whether or not you are a US citizen is not an issue that IRS checks when you are filing taxes;

    - yes, an undocumented individual can (and is advised to) file income taxes - personally know many who do this and even get their refunds back if they are due - IRS is mandated by law NOT to verify immigration status for the purposes of tax filing;

    - in fact one of the things that is often cited is the amount of money undocumented immigrants contribute to social security & other forms of revenue & often never claim

    I understand the need for some red-state-Dems to take the decisions they have taken but I wish they had included a fight against bigotry & inequality as a crucial part of their platforms.

    this would have contributed greatly to the marginalization of the bigots and also undermined gop’s constant use of coded language;

    Posted a tweet, earlier today, with a link to the article from which this excerpt is quoted, below:

    “In the end it all comes down to business. Fighting off IS in Syria will certainly be aided by bringing in the Peshmerga. However, Turkey is walking a fine line with its policies, and barring its own Kurds from entering Syria does not seem like an appropriate, or sustainable, policy. If it leads to more deaths in Turkey its problems with Kurdish resistance will only get worse.”

    Erdogan has been informed by lots of folk that his most direct path to stability, within Turkey, with Kurds is if he robustly enables the Kurds (Turkish and Iraqi) to crush #DAESH. The dude is too encapsulated in his Sunni (Salafi) hate to get it … yet.
