I am so glad to see that PBO will be all around the USA in the final days of this Election Season.
(POTUS better stock up on the throat lozenges and hot/tea/honey supplies.)
Will we hear soon about FLOTUS’ schedule as well as The Bidens, Martin O’Malley and Elizabeth Warren? All hands on deck time and those are our strongest spokepersons.

Unless you had a very sheltered childhood/were home-schooled, etc, who can say that they were never bullied at school? Bullying is a very common phenomenon in childhood and adolescence (and even adulthood), and I don’t think it should be used to explain motives for shooting people, when all other signs point to a culture of gun violence and narcissistic entitlement, and anger/depression over the break-up of a relationship.

I feel for this young boy but again with the entire world whitesplaining these brutal murders with stories about him being a misfit. I’ve had it with violence being a black/brown & white issue.

      • 19 hopefruit2
        October 25, 2025 at 10:25 am

And it actually perpetuates the problem of gun violence by letting the NRA off the hook.

Bullying occurs in EVERY culture - it is a universal phenomenon, and it’s just as - if not even more virulent among females. It’s not exclusive to privileged white boys in suburban America. Ditto for mental illness, being rejected in relationships, etc.,

If you cannot go through these ups and downs of life without resorting to violence with a gun, then there is a much bigger problem here.

And meta, you are right about this: People who will extend mountains of sympathy to a surburban mass shooter who was “bullied” are the same ones who are quick to label the inner city kid (who has probably witnessed/experienced far more trauma/bullying, and personal harm) a “thug” or “criminal” and deserving of being murdered by cop.

My point is, of course these young people are tortured and disturbed, whatever the cause. Their brutal disregard for human life is shocking and an assault to our senses. But I believe it is our horrific culture of easily available guns and rush to violence as a solution to everything that catalyze these actions.

          • 22 hopefruit2
            October 25, 2025 at 11:03 am

Exactly meta. The widespread refusal to see the obvious and more immediate problem (the gun and “normalized” gun culture) in search of an alternate and more distal explanation (bullying, tortured soul, mental illness) is what I’m objecting to here.

And as I said, these explanations are not invoked for foreign terrorists, or inner city minorities who commit acts of violence. They are almost exclusively reserved for white male perpetrators who obviously grew up in a gun-loving household. That’s the point I’m making here.

” I don’t think it should be used to explain motives for shooting people”

Actually it can explain the motives. If a person is constantly bullied, ridiculed in front of their peers or harassed daily and no one does anything about it or the person feels powerless to stop it.. they can snap and what happens happens. That is just human nature.

My son was harassed by a kid in when he was in 1st grade and I talked to the school and teachers about it. He would run away or hide from this person and the group that the kid hung out with. The school would not coordinate a meeting with the parents for our family to have the conversation on what was happening. I talked to counselors, teachers and principal and nothing. My son did not retaliate because I raised him to respect himself and others.

2nd grade this kid kept harassing him and when my son told me about it and I asked him how he responded, he let me know he told the teachers and nothing was done so he would run away or hide.

I went to the school that day and told them what was happening. I let them know this problem was occurring with the same kid I spoke to them about constantly the year before but this year I was doing things differently. I told my son in front of the administrative staff that he is not allowed to run away. There would be no more hiding as he did nothing wrong. I told him in front of the staff that if this child or any other kid harassed him, he is to give one warning only and notify an adult. If the child does it again…he is to knock him out. COLD. He had my full permission.

Then I turned to the administrative staff and let them know that if they cannot do their jobs to ensure kids are not harassed in their place of learning, then my child would protect himself. No more running. I was no longer calling the school.. No more conversations. I let them know I was prepared to deal with any repercussions after the fact but my kid would do what he had to do in order to protect himself. The school could do whatever they wanted after the fact and our family would deal with it. But no more running. No more hiding. Just one warning and then it is what it is.

After that conversation the counselors and teachers held assemblies reminding kids about school rules and bullying. Parents received notices about this topic and school rules. That child was transferred to another school and my son and all his siblings went on through the remainder of the Elementary School years with no one bothering any of my children.

My point.. I understand how things like this can happen.

        October 25, 2025 at 10:44 am

one clarification… I am not saying that a child who is bullied should shoot another child. What I am saying is that if you are able to stop these situations early on… it most likely will not escalate to the level where a student is so stressed out that he thinks shooting another child is the answer.

There are things adults can do to stop harassment and not deal with it as if bullying is a rite of passage for growing up.

      • 25 hopefruit2
        October 25, 2025 at 10:51 am

Nospin my heart goes out to your son and to you, and Bravo/Brava to you as a parent for handling this situation in the most exemplary manner.

But I think you’re missing my point - which is that what you described and whatever may have been going on with yesterday’s shooter is not exclusive to white males in surburban America - YET, it’s almost always used to explain mass shooting incidents involving that demographic, whereas for Black kids they are afforded no such explanation- in fact, people often go out of their way to criminalize these young men and “thuggify” them - even without knowing much about their background and (usually) disadvantaged circumstances (which also often include bullying and harassment) growing up.

Furthermore, you basically proved my point by saying:

“My son did not retaliate because I raised him to respect himself and others.”

Why didn’t your son get a gun and go shoot up a bunch of students/teachers at his school? Because somewhere along the line, he internalized the message that this was not an appropriate way to deal with the bullying.

That Marysville kid grew up in a gun culture - he was already quite desensitized to death by guns, so it was no big deal to go to school and shoot up a bunch of people. If you notice, he never made threats of killing people on his Twitter page - he was very careful to conceal his plan.

          October 25, 2025 at 10:59 am

I didn’t miss your point hopefruit2. I totally get it.

If I allowed my child to continue to be harrassed over the years my son could have become bitter, internalized the situation and it could have become more.

There are kids in our local middle school who killed themselves because of situations like this. Some kids are medicated just to be able to cope with being in middle school because of stressors of being bullied daily. My heart breaks for them.

Those are warning signs for me that situations like the one above can be commonplace if they are not able to deal with it or stop it. Am I concerned that one of those same kids can show up at class shooting at other students? Heck yes.

I am not excusing the child for shooting another child. I don’t condone it. Not at all. I am just saying… I can understand it.

My posts basically speak to the horrific gun culture that has been front and center in ALL of these recent incidents of mass school shootings.

Yes, you have talked about the bullying (which is horrific and also needs to be addressed and stopped on it’s own)

            BUT

Like I said, the problem of bullying is universal, yet only one segment of US society gets the benefit of this explanation when they resort to mass murder.

            Why is that?

            • 28 nospin
              October 25, 2025 at 12:35 pm

“Like I said, the problem of bullying is universal, yet only one segment of US society gets the benefit of this explanation when they resort to mass murder. Why is that”

I tend to look at things through the lens of who is in control or are the decision makers. The fact that US society leans toward one group based on pigmentation especially when a crime is committed isn’t the fault of the kids. Adults created that concept and continue to perpetuate this meme by design. Adults are also the creators and enablers of our irresponsible gun laws. Why is that? Because in America folks have the right to be ignorant.

I get what you are saying hopefruit2. I really do. I am not disagreeing with you at all on any your points. I just see the shades of gray on this particular incident.

                October 25, 2025 at 12:50 pm

I hear what you’re saying nospin and I appreciate your willingness to hear me out on this as well.

No one said this is a fault of the kids. In fact, I’ve been saying just the opposite - that the adults - particularly the pro-gun lobbyists, and corporate media that enable them are largely the ones to blame. They are the ones who immediately try to excuse mass shootings with the “bullying” or “mental illness” explanation because those explanations conveniently shift public attention away from the primary problem - the gun culture and culture of routinely solving interpersonal problems and life challenges through gun-related violence and death.

I also see shades of grey - but my original point -which doesn’t negate the problem of bullying - is that if we are going to use bullying as an excuse for one group of perpetrators, then we had better be just as willing to use it for other groups of perpetrators. Otherwise we are just as guilty of the same double standard and refusal to acknowledge the problem of gun pathology as the pro-gun lobbyists and corporate media.

Scientists from Harvard Medical School have discovered a way of turning stem cells into killing machines to fight brain cancer.

In experiments on mice, the stem cells were genetically engineered to produce and secrete toxins which kill brain tumours, without killing normal cells or themselves.

Researchers said the next stage was to test the procedure in humans.

A stem cell expert said this was “the future” of cancer treatment.

The study, published in the journal Stem Cells, was the work of scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

My oldest cousin just died from brain cancer last month…..

“Do Republicans think that black people are that stupid?”

They’re counting on people forgetting how they ramped up the birth certificate and impeachment talk and how they call him Muslim/Kenyan and not really from here. They’re banking on people forgettting how they paint him as “other”, that he wasn’t really deserving of being president and only got their because of racism by Black peole and White liberal guilt. They are going to have to find a way to not demonize him while they are running against him (he won’t be on the ticket but will still be in office during campaign season) so as not to alienate Black people since nationally they need the votes. It will be tough, but they are good at lying and reinventing themselves. And unfortunately society seems to have short memories.

Hopefully we will have good Democratic candidates that will call them out.

The Fight — and the Right — to Vote

      By Bill Moyers

      ——————————————-

PAUL WEYRICH at the Religious Roundtable, August 1980: I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people. They never have been from the beginning of our country, and they are not now. As a matter of fact our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.

BILL MOYERS: So, the right has become relentless in trying every trick to keep certain people from voting. And conservative control of the Supreme Court gives them a leg up. Last year’s decision – Shelby County v. Holder – revoked an essential provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and that has only upped the ante, encouraging many state Republican legislators to impose restrictive voter ID laws, as well as gerrymander Congressional districts and limit registration and voting hours.

The protesters are angry in particular at job prospects for the young - youth unemployment is at a record 44.2%.

I agree Nena and I saw where POTUS said recently that if Michelle Nunn wins in Georgia the Dems hold the Senate. He doesn’t ever casually make predictions like that. We’ll soon find out and none too soon.

I’ll be so glad when this election is over so that POTUS is free to do something - with or without the Congress - on immigration. One of my closest friends is going through so much emotional pain as the INS has his parents on a scheduled deportation plan. They came here decades ago from South America fleeing for reasons I cannot detail for privacy reasons and raised their boys, paid US taxes the entire time, and now are senior citizens and grandparents who have lived here twice as long as where they were born. Their kids and grandkids were born here so it’s absolutely frightening for all of them for so many reasons. Of course my friend is voting Dem but also so hoping that POTUS is able to do something regardless of the election outcome as otherwise his parent’s fate will be before the end of the year.

I’m headed out to vote now and going to do some door to door volunteer work for Governor Quinn this afternoon. See you all later!

POTUS also make a radio interview that aired in GA or was it a…..robo-call phone message to help Nunn get the votes out in GA.
Like Don or Bill R said…….I would rather be in Dems shoes 10 days out than GOPer TV/Cable and Pollsters’ driven state of mind……my Verbiage…..to paraphrase.

Have a great day Voting and Thanks for your door to door Volunteer activities.
I will be doing a phone banking volunteering today…..the 4th Saturday straight.

Well, logic, reality, necessity and practicality are dictating the rise in Women Soldiers in the region.
Their men are dying. Many wars over the years. And Global connectives…i.e…..Technologies….. show Women in many parts of the world doing different things.

For an example, during WWII in US, men went to war…..were drafted…..and to build the war equipment needed, many women went into the labor force and as years went, today, nearly 50% of the work force today in USA are women.

“Open Carry Enthusiasts Plan On Marching Through St. Louis Carrying Pistols And Rifles ”

    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/10/24/open-carry-enthusiasts-plan-marching-st-louis-carrying-pistols-rifles.html

    ——

A gun rights activist from Ohio plans to lead a march through downtown St. Louis on Saturday afternoon. The walk through the heart of the downtown area will start at 1 PM local time and consist of other open carry enthusiasts. Smith has asked those joining him on Saturday to bring long rifles or pistols…Smith is also requesting that those participating not bring ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ flags, other political paraphernalia, camouflage or anything else that will make the group look like a militia.

Per Smith’s Facebook page, he has 159 saying they will attend with 90 maybes. That number will likely fluctuate by the start of the march, so it is hard to say how many will actually show up. The plan is to walk from the Gateway Mall down to the Arch and then back to the mall. It appears this is not an organized event with any permits from the city. Therefore, Smith is urging the participants to follow basic traffic laws and stay on the sidewalks.

Ask yourself this question? If this were an organized march of activists and protesters from Ferguson who planned on walking through the downtown area strapped with AR-15s and Glocks, what kind of reaction do you think they’d get? Heck, less than 100 mostly black protesters chanting ‘Hands up! Don’t shoot’ can’t go anywhere in the St. Louis area without attracting dozens of cops in riot gear and a helicopter overhead.

One also has to wonder if Smith and his cohorts are hoping to have some kind of confrontation with Ferguson protesters. It is obvious he is looking for as much attention as possible as he’s been making the local media rounds in advance of the Saturday march.

What is the point except to incite with hatred against black people? This has nothing at all to do with them. May Karma as so many call it visit these beasts promptly.

Good article on how unrepresentative our government is, but especially the GOP. Also emphasizes how important it is for women and POC to get involved at the local level. Democrats have a better job in encouraging diversity but we have a long way to go.
