Tuesday night didn’t just rob us of a functional Congress.
Tuesday night also robbed us of a cherished friend.
It wasn’t bad enough that our amk had to suffer through his country giving the untrammeled reins of power to a Hindu fundamentalist party which, aside from theology, would have much in common with the most revanchist parts of our Christian right wing.
He had to watch as a country turned its back on a man he loved and admired, giving power to his enemies, enemies who have done nothing but trail his name through the mud and carry out a political war against him not faced by any other modern US president.
The idjits came out to vote and gave power to the chief idjits. And the idjits stayed home, and likewise gave away their power.
It was one wound too much.
If I respected him less, I would have said this:
No, you don’t get to go away. You don’t get to come into someone’s life, make them care about you, worry when you worry, rejoice when you rejoice, and then flee. You don’t get to become a member of a community and then abandon that community, a community which you sustain as much as any other member of it. You don’t get to bring in love and then take it away.
But, I do respect him. In my many years on the Internet, he is one of the greatest hearts I’ve met. He reserves nothing. He leaves everything on the pitch. And I have a sneaking suspicion that he at times wished he was an American citizen, so that he could work on campaigns, so that he could proudly, beamingly cast his vote for Barack Hussein Obama.
So I’ll remember his fake exasperation with “wimmin”.
I’ll remember his agonizing over what scotch to buy at the duty free.
I’ll remember his goodnatured subservience to the “wifey unit”.
I’ll remember his brilliant daughter and niece.
I’ll remember his not getting Nerdy’s jokes.
I’ll remember his incessant teasing of VC.
I’ll remember his kindness, his care, his concern, his very goodness.
This is what makes us different. We’re not consumed with hate as are our opponents. Vitriol doesn’t spring easily from our lips. A similar website on the other side wouldn’t miss a longtime member a beat. They’d just shrug and go back to the hatred.
We are not them. We can never be them.
So I sadly accept his decision.
But I will not bid him “farewell”.
I will bid him to be well. Be happy. Be true. Be good.
And hopefully he’ll find his way to us again.

I really wish that the Democratic members of Congress will be more *publicly* vocal about what is and is not happening. Call out the GOPers about their obstructive/destructive behavior. And stop leaving PBO hanging out on his own whenever he takes any action.
The Democratic leadership is emailing us to “… sign our note to President Obama thanking him for all he’s done and letting him know that we have his back.” *THEY* need to set the example and let *us* see them doing the same.

I’ve just been roaming reading some articles and comments, some despairing, about the Midterms. My only concern was Pres Obama. After I saw and heard him in the presser yesterday, I felt solidly grounded and at peace. I feel energized and ready to work for him and with him.
I feel free of the GOP. They have been and will continue to be obnoxious. The President will continue being the adult in the room and getting incredible things done, with or without their support. I don’t care what the GOP does anymore. I care about supporting the President any way I can.
I don’t want to pay any attention to the GOP and if the media was telling the truth about Pres Obama’s accomplishments we would have very different results. So to some extent I may pay attention to the media to correct their misstatements and let them know they’re not going to get away with it. As far as the GOP, they will overreach and go too far. They cannot help themselves and they have just elected people even more wacky than the ones that were in office. They won’t be able to control Cruz or the Tea Party. I visited RedState a couple of days before the election and they were very bitter about the establishment GOP selling them out by stopping the shutdown last October and raising the debt ceiling. They want impeachment. They will not buy what the GOP is selling and the country will not want their extreme policies. The GOP and Boehner will be as manipulative as always. Even when they get in power there will be no pleasing them. They have the lowest approval rating of just about anything polled and now they won’t have anything to hide behind. They can’t spin it and control all of the media. They had terrible approvals during the shutdown and their already low approvals will plummet even further. They will be obnoxious and unfair. I don’t care anymore. It’s not going to stop President Obama.
POTUS can handle this. We can back him, work for him, support each other and take care of each other. There is PLENTY that we can do that has his back and is positive and nourishes our spirit. There are programs that he has started that we can participate in. We can spread the word about his work. We can get involved in local politics or groups working for voting rights. We all need to find ways to stay in balance and take care of ourselves emotionally so we can enjoy being part of the goodness that POTUS and his administration is creating every day. That dear man will be with us as President for two more years and I intend to enjoy every minute of it. Democratic presidents always go on to do more after their terms are over and I know he will too. Whatever he does, I want to be a part of it in some way.
I feel very encouraged and I want to share that and encourage all of you dear people. The TOD community is powerful, loving and strong. The GOP is an illusion of smoke and mirrors. There’s nothing real there. What the President is creating is real and good for this country and I see even more great things being created in the next two years. I can’t imagine a group I would walk with on this journey with President Obama than all of you.

I hope this is only a break, because I always read what you wrote and posted
I am sad about AMK too. But I certainly understand his feelings. That election was a kick in the gut. It can take you down because you feel powerless at times to counteract all the misleading and outrageously false narratives which were allowed without check by our media, resulting in that disastrous election outcome. All the unfair treatment of our most gifted president is enraging. I can see how people get tempted to throw in the towel, feel they can no longer invest their precious time, devotions and emotions to the dirty game of politics. But thankfully there are many who are determined and persevere, are willing to fight again another day, know that arc of the moral universe is long. I hope AMK takes a needed break, sees how much everyone here cares about him and misses him and will return again soon.

You know I have felt so bad over these last few days about Anthony Brown losing his election. I’ve been waiting for him to post something on his Facebook page or Twitter account and it took a couple of days before he was able to do so. Today he thank everyone and was gracious to our new Gov-Elect. You take this stuff rather hard when you get to know the candidates somewhat personally. Anthony would come into our campaign office often. He lived near our campaign office. He and I live in the same city. I have seen his family out and about over the years so he isn’t some abstract candidate that I just happened to be trying to get elected he was a nice man with a beautiful family. His young daughter would volunteer at the campaign office and she cast her first ever general election vote during the early voting period here in MD for her dad. He had family that came into town and volunteered out of our campaign office just to help GOTV over this last weekend and on Monday evening he came by the office and thanked each of us personally, took pictures with each of us and invited each of us to the victory party the next evening.
It all feels so surreal. And to think that Nate Silver gave him a 90% chance of winning on Tuesday….(Sigh). I’m sure the disappointment will fade over time but wow if I feel this bad I cannot imagine how gut wrenching this must be for him and his family.
He’s a great guy and I’m sure life has something wonderful in store for him.

Although change is sometimes good, sometimes it makes us want to go back a week or two and keep things the way they were. Frozen in time. Unfortunately, life isn’t like that, but we can dream.

I so understand where amk is coming from - I am almost there myself. In India over 70% of voters voted so there a large % had their say. Voting across the country took a month - there were a lot of voters - this was recognized and they weren’t all expected to vote in a small period of time.
We also voted in a RW government (sadly a world wide trend) but voting in my world is compulsory so everyone had a say. RW governments crashed the world economy, LW governments brought in the recovery, the RW pundits and the press reversed the parties of these events.
We now find in the US that President Obama caused Katrina, the democrats crashed the economy and only the GOP can fix it. It is fast approaching that a large % of the population will also give GWB credit for all of the achievements of President Obama - look for that conversation next Sunday.
America has long been regarded as the “leader of the free world” yet
- less than 40% of the voter population voted for the now Republican congress - no doubt partly due to the efforts by state administrators to suppress the vote (NO WAY would I ever queue longer than 15 minutes to vote - and I can vote ANYWHERE in my state, I do not need to find my precinct)
- the past few years have seen racism used to attack the President, the like of which many people thought would never be seen again
- the SCOTUS declared racism does not exist, SCOTUS gave corporations and the catholic church the rights most would reserve to living breathing people. When the Courts favor a political party/race/religion - where is democracy
I could add so much more - but you all know what has been happening. You are an amazingly strong group of people - it is a joy to be here - but it is hard to watch from the outside what is happening to your country. The election of so many RW anti-people, anti-science, anti-women, anti-minority lunatics is insanity, that the media would not call them out on their stupidity while attacking every democrat who had the audacity to breathe - oozes a partisan media that will soon be completely owned by a political party.

The Democrats are supposed to be a party of inclusion, right? A party that is proud of its outreach to AA’s, Latinos, women, LGBT’s, etc. A party that promotes civil rights, human rights, women’s rights…. But by candidates distancing themselves from PBO, Democrats missed an opportunity to *show* what they stand for, and in fact sent a mixed message.
We have long come to the conclusion that if Barack Obama were a white, heterosexual male with a name like “John Smith,” he would have been embraced for the man that he is; his accomplishments would have been heralded; his character unquestioned; his intelligence appreciated; his position as POTUS and CIC respected.
We also know that many who claim to dislike Barack Obama, do so, not because of something he has done, but because of who he is…a black man with a funny name. His attributes are discounted because he does not fit the mold that some have envisioned for the POTUS. These racists attitudes have resulted in the obstruction and gridlock we see in our legislation. These racist attitudes, while not preventing individuals from enjoying the benefits of PBO’s hard work as POTUS, prevents him from receiving the credit he so rightly deserves.
By distancing themselves from PBO, *those* Democrats have basically condoned the racists attitudes of President Obama’s adversaries. By not being vocal in giving this administration credit for its accomplishments, *those* Democrats are basically acquiescing to the mindset that a black man cannot be given that kind of praise. By remaining silent to the misinformation, the outright lies, the fabricated scandals, and the disrespect, *those* Democrats are in effect giving consent to these actions.
If actions speak louder than words, *those* Democrats’ actions have said a mouthful and is nowhere near the message about how the party claims it wants to be portrayed. Even if it had not made a difference to the outcome of the mid-terms, the respect for being true to what the party says they represent would have been intact.

Even though we only engaged a few times, I have been here everyday even though I do not comment as often as the other regulars, enjoying your presence here inn the village. - how could bigotry entice so many to turn their backs on a President who works so hard, is so kind, intelligent, always respectful of EVERYONE no matter their station in life?
- how could so many whine all the time and yet are too lazy & apathetic to cast a vote that would contribute to their OWN challenging circumstance?
- how could people whose very rights are being taken away by politicians either vote for the same imbeciles or choose not to participate in defending those rights?
- how could seasoned Dem politicians believe the media meme so much they run from their achievements, their exceptional President & with a wink-and-nod permit public racism to go unchallenged among their constituents?

LL, thank you for this lovely post for our friend AMK. One day during one of those many contentious moments in our fab ride with PBO, I mentioned that I needed a pretty drink. I am going to miss Amk very much. He surely contributed so much to the unwavering support to President Barack Obama. He gave my heart hope in his comments filled with so much wisdom, and he just kept our spirits filled with so much goodness. I thank him so much for his support for Chips and for PBO.
I wish him the very best, but I am going to miss him so much. Very few people come into my life and leave with such respect as Amk has done. Thank you Amk for touching my life in a positive and beautiful manner. Knowing that our international family has given us to much in our TOD family.

LL, I’m just catching up. This is a beautiful tribute to amk. I can’t say any thing more compelling that what others have said. I will miss amk. I sure hope he comes back. I do understand the hurt and pain and maybe even anger. But gee, I’ll miss him.
LL, thank you for the wonderful tribute to Amk. He will be missed by all of us. I can tell you I was also distraught after Tues. But it was the President and got me back up and on track again. I do believe the Teapubs will go over the edge. They won’t be able to help themselves.

I wish amk peace after a sucky Tuesday but hope he returns soon. I miss him; he really cracked me up when he’d banter with Chips, vc and others.
Like someone else suggested upthread, it’s at this time we need to hold one up. The election result made me sick btoo ut we have to stand back up and fight.
I do understand the frustrustion and anger though. I just hope amk returns when he’s feeling better

I am so sad hurt depressed and disgusted with the voter apathy in my country you would have thought the dems have learned in 2010 but to repeat they are already talking impeachment my tears won’t stop I have no one to talk to I decided no more anything political on T.V for the 1 1/2 years I’ll get my information from this website only if anyone resides in Portsmouth /Norfolk area I would love to meet for lunch and find some solace in discuss the good of my president
I am a lurker, and I don’t post very often. However, I have come to recognize the names and comments of those who do post often and I certainly will miss amk. If there is one thing I would like to say to him is not to despair because evil never really wins, it just may look that way sometimes. We must all hold on to our faith for there is a Supreme Power over everything and everyone. Maybe after a little break, amk will come back. I hope so.

I remember him using the terms for Palin -Tundra Twit, Chips - blog tyrant and as LL mentioned …. wimmin, daughter unit, wife unit, etc.
He is the one that we get “advise” from regarding problems we may have with our computers….
