Barack Obama names Richard Verma as the new US envoy to India

From Lalit K Jha Washington, Nov 12 (PTI) The nomination of Richard Rahul Verma as the US Ambassador to India is a “crowning moment” for Indian-Americans, members of whose have been appointed in record numbers by President Barack Obama, according to eminent leaders from the community.

Verma, if confirmed by the Senate would be the first-ever Indian-American to be the US Ambassador to India.

    VILLAGER PABLUM

    ——————————-

This whole interview is a whiny ass titty baby mewl that reflects Chuck Todd’s ability to ignore any form of nuance and just boil things down to Villager Pablum. A spending bill with “pork” that includes help for poor people shows a lack of leadership? If only he had schmoozed harder like Reagan did? If he had called in Nancy Pelosi to get the lay of the land?

Does anyone remember where Barack Obama was before he was elected President? The Senate, you knuckleheads! Don’t you think he had some clue about how things were working?

Pray tell, why listen to a Village College dropout like Todd?
Chips posted what Todd said 2-4 days after POTUS was sworn in in 2009. Todd ignores that POTUS invited these people to watch Super Bowl in 2009, most if not all declined. They planned Obstructionism. They told Biden before POTUS was sworn in that their instruction was to say No. The Media cuddled them. They fanned the hatred with birthers and teabaggers. The Media was always chasing after Cheney…..Jan 29th….carrying his hateful comments against pres Obama Live. The Media was there cheering and giving them every air time possible.

Folks forgot that US was in a near depression.

The only fault here is that Dems decided to seek Unity instead of exposing the unpatriotic, unAmerican, unprecedented acts committed by the GOPers to undermine pres Obama and USA.

Agree that MSMBC = Comcast = MSM = infinite circle.

The author’s contention that Reagan didn’t inherit an economy in free-fall is true, but it was no bed of roses.

Double-digit inflation, mortgage rates at 21% — the economy was pretty much stalled and the price tags on grocery items went up every time you went to the market — literally, back when each item had a price sticker, you could tell how long the item had been on the shelf by the number of stickers that were placed on top of the previous ones.

      LEADERSHIP DEFINED

      President Obama is no ‘bystander’

      By Steve Benen

      ————————————-

Obama saw a worsening climate crisis, so he decided to take the lead. Obama is tired of waiting for a hapless Congress to act on immigration, so he’s leading here, too. Obama saw an Ebola threat, and he’s leading a global effort to save lives. Obama sees an ISIS threat, so he’s leading an international campaign to confront the militants.

The president showed leadership when disarming Syria of its chemical weapons. He’s showing leadership in trying to strike a nuclear deal with Iran. He showed leadership on the minimum wage, raising it for federal contractors while Congress sat on its hands. He’s showed leadership on health care, rescuing the auto industry, and advancing the cause of civil rights. [Update: several readers reminded me he’s leading on net neutrality, too.]

        Good luck!

I know you are frustrated but *I* am not a techie person as you well know, and Skype would simply add to my frustration level. Indeed, I would actually need to familiarize myself WITH my ‘dang phone’ before installing anything *else* on it. Months later and I’m still stumbling to find the ‘answer’ button on the rare occasions it rings when I have it turned on. [Don't tell anyone, but it hasn't been turned on now for three full days! I checked with Offspring. He was okay. I turned it back off.] Since I’m far enough away where you cannot bean be on the side of the head, ;) I’ll admit that I have a philosophy that my phone shouldn’t control me. Therefore, to show who is in control  I only turn it on when it’s needed. /making hasty tracks away/

On Wednesday, US President Barack Obama arrives in Burma for his second diplomatic visit in as many years. In advance of the Asean and East Asia summits in Naypyidaw, Obama answered questions from The Irrawaddy correspondent Lalit K Jha about his visit, the reforms of the past three years and the future of Burma’s democratic transition.

Question: In a recent speech to the US Military Academy at West Point, you told your audience that the United States has made a partner of Burma without firing a shot. Do you consider Burma a foreign policy success of your administration?

Answer: I was proud to become the first US president to visit your country two years ago, and I was deeply touched by the hospitality that people extended to me on my visit. I very much look forward to returning for this second visit. This time, I’m coming with other leaders from across the region because Myanmar [Burma] is hosting the East Asia Summit and the Asean Summit. It is no easy task to host summits like this, and I commend the government and the people of Burma for all their work and preparation to make these summits a success. These meetings are a reflection of Myanmar’s progress in recent years and a sign of the greater role that your country can play in Southeast Asia.

Since my visit two years ago, I also welcomed President Thein Sein to the White House last year, which was the first such visit by a leader of your country to the United States in almost half a century. In Rangoon, I was honored to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other brave activists who have risked their lives to champion democracy in Burma. And over the past two years, our countries have forged greater ties and trade. My engagement is rooted in the message that I sent to governments when I first became president—if you begin to take the hard steps toward greater openness and reform, the United States will extend a hand of friendship and assist in those reforms. I’ve always been clear-eyed about how difficult this transition would be. But as president, I’m determined that the United States will remain a partner with those who seek greater freedom, prosperity and dignity.

In my speech at the US Military Academy at West Point this year, I said that if these reform efforts succeed, the United States will have gained a new partner. Burma is still at the beginning of a long and hard journey of renewal and reconciliation. On the one hand, since my last visit there has been some progress, including economic reforms and welcomed political steps, including the release of additional political prisoners, a process of constitutional reform, and ceasefire agreements toward ending the many conflicts that have plagued your country.

On the other hand, progress has not come as fast as many had hoped when the transition began four years ago. In some areas there has been a slowdown in reforms, and even some steps backward. Former political prisoners continue to face restrictions. Members of the media have been arrested, and journalist Aung Kyaw Naing was tragically and senselessly murdered. We also continue to be deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Rakhine [Arakan] State and the treatment of the Rohingya and other Muslim communities, who continue to endure discrimination and abuse. One of the main messages that I’ll deliver on this visit is that the government of Myanmar has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all people in the country, and that the fundamental human rights and freedoms of all people should be respected. That’s the only way reforms can stay on track. That’s the only way that this country is going to realize greater prosperity and its rightful place in the region and the world. That would be a success, above all, for the people of Myanmar, and that would be good for the United States and the world.

NCLB, can you imagine any president before Barack Obama who could speak so eloquently on the internal affairs of Myanmar, including knowledge of events in the specific state of Rakhine. George Bush had not even a basic understanding of Iraq when he invaded it and certainly did not care. Every time PBO sits down and speaks to a foreign journalist, I am awed by the depth and breadth of his knowledge.

    Just caught up :-)

We are SO lucky to have TOD. As soon as I saw the news posted here about the Climate Agreement with China, I emailed my cousin, who had commented to me on election night that she wished PBO had done even more on climate (she’s a supporter and voted Dem, though). I included that pic of PBO feeding Turtle his meds :-) )

Anyway, this a.m. she emailed me back saying:
“Thanks for this good news! You are really on top of things. I heard it from you before I heard it on the news, and I have the news on most of the day & night!”

This is the state of our Media folks! My cousin (a Boomer) has the “news” on all day and night and had to hear about this landmark agreement from me by email!

Thank you Chips! You and Nerdy should get the Medal of Freedom from PBO someday. May I suggest a letter writing campaign? :-)

White House Student Film Festival: The Sequel!

// …It is in this spirit that I am happy to announce that submissions are now open for the second-ever White House Student Film Festival — open to U.S. students, grades K-12. The theme of the festival this year is “The Impact of Giving Back.” Short films entered into this year’s festival should offer a take on that topic, and be no longer than 3 minutes.

The American Film Institute is proud to once again collaborate in this unique film fest, which highlights both the Obama administration’s commitment to public service and AFI’s ongoing mission to nurture the next generation of filmmakers… //

When I read that elsewhere, at first, I was disappointed. But after some thinking, I concurred with Harry. The GOP has a solid majority and can do whatever they want. Dems simply don’t need to give them their votes when they are totally against a bill.

Harry Reid is a gentleman, not a Teabagger who dreams of dismantling the President, the country, the Party. He will seek common grounds whenever possible.

The ultimate stopper to the GOP is POTUS’s veto pen… and We The People in 2016.

      • 137 Obama Grandmama
        November 13, 2025 at 12:15 am

The problem is the GOP is unscrupulous and will do or say whatever furthers their cause not caring what it does to the country. They just believe in reframing their actions to cast blame on the other side and the worst of it is it worked. Do I want our side to play dirty too? Not really. Two wrongs do not make a right! However, my inner self wants the GOP to get their own medicine back. The GOP would just change the filibuster rule all the way back so they had complete control and blame it on the Dems or probably on PBO. The truth is many Dem Senators would probably just join along with the GOP. Pathetic! Wish they could just follow PBO’s lead, but I am not sure that they could strategize or take a long view of something other than old school same as same as.

        November 12, 2025 at 5:29 pm

That statement is to “show good faith” so he can then dig in and work the Republicans. I don’t think anyone else knows the arcane parliamentary procedures of the Senate as well as Reid, except, sadly for McConnell. Reid will be slyer, less obvious, but he will work behind the scenes. Remember, every time when people would get mad at him, the end result would come out well. Reid also has his eye on the long term goal, not 24/7 soundbites, like we want.
I’m sure he has worked with PBO about the timing of the AG hearings. He would not keep PBO in the dark and hit him a surprise blow. Reid doesn’t operate that way.

          November 12, 2025 at 5:58 pm

I’m with you on this assessment, Carolyn. I remember Harry came through a couple of times when we least expected him to. Also, a while back I saw a video of him, near the end of a session, reading a long list of items(?) into the record after most everyone else had gone, and the fact he did that, was supposedly meaningful. I believe it was a vid segment involving Lawrence O’Donnell, who was trying to show that Harry’s knowledge of arcane procedures was of value to the Dems.

Reid can Never get all Dems to do what GOPers do…….Dems would Never work in unison. It is against their DNA. GOPers know this. The reason they have been able to shut the Fed Gov’t down several times and pay Zero prize. Deny millions ACA Medicare expansion and the Media were feverish about imaginary few who had Junk Insurance.

      Senator Reid is correct.

Why would you ever want to obstruct crazy.

Let the #KOCHSTERS pass their trash; the media won’t be able to hide that it’s trash and PBO will take’um to the dumpster as often as he needs to to make it clear that that’s the only place for GOP trash.

His approval ratings will soar …. and if DEMS catch a clue and support him, robustly, they’ll do very well in 2016.

Has anyone seen any Dems on TV applauding the climate agreement? I haven’t been here all day, but the only guests I’ve seen interviewed are all Repubs. Again—-why aren’t Dems storming the air ways to support and promote this news? Are they insisting they want to appear and being told no? Or are they nowhere to be found again? If so, lessons not learned.

Those of you who are fortunate enough to have Dem Senators, need to email, tweet, write, call, and push them to make public statements. My two Senators are the original “Climate change is a hoax” Inhofe, and the Dr.No Tom Coburn.

I would like to know—once again—-why Repubs are the only ones interviewed on a PBO/Dem action/policy. Every time there is something the Dems should be crowing about, we only get Repubs who of course criticize and tamp down any glad tidings. Are Dems not allowed—-even on msnbc—-or are they not willing and refuse to push themselves forward to support good Dem news? I would love an answer to that question which I’ve had for a long time. It makes no sense to me. It really hinders “messaging” which everyone sees as a big part of the problem. (the public clueless about the good PBO has done)

‘I would love an answer to that question which I’ve had for a long time. It makes no sense to me.’

It makes no sense to others here, I feel sure. Dotstar, as this is a long time question, have you ever asked your elected rep, and what did they respond? (You are in a democratic county/district & state, right?)

These are excellent questions. I’m just as frustrated by what seems to be a concerted effort in the media to keep Democrats gagged about PBO’s accomplishments. And I’m going to start confronting Democrats directly about this. Are they part of this plan - because they think it will help HRC in 2016?

Do Democrats passively wait to be invited to comment? I’m sure that’s not the case with the GOP. Maybe a little more aggressiveness is called for.

I just wrote the DSCC and asked why no Dem Senators were on the airwaves bragging about the China/US agreement. Said the Repubs were all over the place, and bashing him as usual. Told them this illustrated why people are angry at them, and why they lost re-elections and new elections. Reminded them that the President is more popular than any individual Senator, or Congress as a whole.

Kasai, don’t know TefPoe, but that’s how I felt about Lupe Fiasco and his dissing of the President a few years ago. I bought “Kick, Push” when it came out but then he started going all emoprog and I swore I’d never spend another dime on his music after he dissed PBO. Maybe I’m wrong here, but I haven’t noticed Lupe exactly blowing up since then. Shawn King and TefPoe are twisted mofos, blaming the victim and ignoring the true source of the injustice for their own lazy and selfish purposes. Lupe, TefPoe (and Shawn King, for that matter) will be forgotten. PBO is making history.

pierce’s thoughts on the new clean air agreement with china, and the rethug kneejerk response:

‘ Now, do I entirely trust the Chinese to live up to their end of the bargain? It’s hard to say, and ideology doesn’t have a damn thing to do about it. There are a lot of people over there who got rich, and who stay rich, operating industries that emit carbon pollution, and I don’t think Chinese plutocrats differ greatly from American plutocrats as far as their inherent desire to be good stewards of the earth is concerned. At the same time, the Chinese also are jumping into Green technology with both feet, clearly seeing an exploding market in such things over the next couple of decades, so maybe their plutocrats will be able to make the highly pragmatic decision that, hey, let’s get even richer doing this! Whereas our plutocrats seem content to bankroll candidates who deny that climate change is even happening at all, or who boast of their ignorance of the subject, one way or another. Guess what? None of those Chinese billionaires scrambling to build solar panels for the world are scientists, either, but they know how to make a buck. Why are their plutocrats such better capitalists than our plutocrats are? ‘

Just renewed my Covered CA plan online with the help from the 1-800 number (find it’s best to do this so that I don’t screw anything up :-) )

Spoke to a “Claudia”. She was so nice, patient and helpful. Answered all of my questions. My Silver plan went up a little bit from last year; so now instead of ridiculously affordable, it is incredibly affordable :-)

a nice short piece from bloomberg news, getting to the heart of the awesome accord the president signed with china:

‘ Will any of this sway Republicans? It seems unlikely. But by linking the EPA rules to Chinese action, President Barack Obama has taken the most compelling case against those rules and co-opted it overnight. For a lame-duck president, that’s a pretty neat trick. ‘
