Just got all of my chores done in time to flip CBS on and reward them for carrying the speech :-) If they mess up, I’ll be back here to see what I missed!
Basically pre-emptive strikes on every counter argument. Won’t mean a lot to most of the RWNJ’s but may really have impacted those sanding in the middle.
You made me smile, MomS. Someone here always labels each one of PBO’s speeches as ‘the best speech of his Presidency’. He has a veritable library of best speeches!
Was I? That’s downright cheeky of me as I have missed so many of them! Maybe it’s relative to how much access one has, and whether one gets to listen to an entire address?! :)
Maybe it was one for which you were in the ‘live’ audience. As for access, however, we here in TODvillage always have access (even after the ‘live’ delivery) given the superb work of our outstanding reporters. JER, CC and NerdyW do an awesome job of covering this Admin’s major appearances before, during, and after - “¡Muchísimas gracias, ladies!”
I know!! This was a pragmatic speech. He wove our history with personal story and scripture. There was a lot of emotion in his words and an intensity to his expression that gave it an urgency.
O, I’m not disputing your ‘best speech’ label, MomS. Let’s face it, I think we’d all be hard-pressed to agree on ONE Pres O’s ‘best speech’!!! Every topic PBO addresses in this way is important - to the health, progress, safety, etc. etc of the nation, and he always bring all his knowledge, wisdom and resources, etc to each. It doesn’t get any better than that IMO!
#Immigration is about character of our nation; We were strangers once too; so Felons not Families; Criminals not Children
#PassABill, Boehner!
or #PassABill, you lazy lawmakers! [Can you tell I’m euphoric about PBO’s speech?]
Last night I was thinking about some things I was hoping he’d say……and he said them. I hope people actually listened to him.
My husband flicked past PBS, and you cannot imagine who Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff had on to present the “Republican” view: Darrell Issa! That was turned off.
Now I’m going to go back and read the points at my leisure.
This was a seriously important speech, but I have to admit as PBO was walking away from the podium I remembered that impersonator video that had him ‘bopping away’ (or was it jumping for joy?) after his bin Laden speech. And I grinned!
also, i loved the way the chandelier was positioned right over his head-looked like he was wearing a crown! just a little jab at the idiots who claim he thinks he’s king or emperor :)
Weird how the GOP leaders always criticize him about his leadership abilities yet never seem to have ONE good idea or issue benefiting the nation that *they* lead on.
My CBS station carried the entire speech without interruption. Our local anchors introduced Scott Pelley, who introduced PBO. Pelley then went back to the local station after the President was finished.
Loved the speech. Love my President. “Scripture tells us…” Your move, Christian conservatives :-)
Is there any wonder why the corrupt media does all it can to keep President Obama from talking with americans without any filter ?
When people can listen directly to him, they realize that there is a world of difference between the real man and how he is portrayed. A world of difference between what his real actions and the way the GOP/media portrays those actions.
 Bobfr, every time you attempt to write ‘exactly’ in amk-lingua I briefly hold my breath anticipating he’ll jump in and confront you. He was pretty particular about its spelling you know - makes me wonder if you’re using ‘tactics or strategy’. ;);)
Amazing speech - amazing speech. i loved the order of the issues - so perfect. In some markets ABC ran it live as well but also started shows from beginning so I don’t know if that means there will not be any ads ran or the 9pm East coast will start 15 minutes late. PBO spoke for pnly 15 minutes, probably closer to 12 minutes.
As usual, the President tries to elevate the debate. Uses words of wisdom and love, instead of words of division. I pray that he can inspire some religious leaders on the Right to speak up against the hate.
Oh this is rich. Andrea Mitchell spoke to a Red State Dem Senator and here is their new meme: DINOS blame PBO for the midterm loss.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Yes.
just as they talk about fixing Obamacare

Casting a shadow on tonight’s achievement. All we need is DINOs to fix things. oy vey.
She and they are wallowing in a past that cannot be changed, PBO is working in the present and marching onward to the future. All they do is talk and talk; how about getting some decent values and acting on them; sheesh.
What dumb ass Democrat Senator blame POTUS for the midterm loss. Oh I would love to know their name, probably that sorry ass Manchin form that red neck racists state West Virginia.
I loved that you could hear both his frustration and his determination. He used reason but he also spoke from his heart. Just an excellent speech in every way.
Hey Bill, speaking of immigrants, have you ever seen the movie The Golden Door/Nuovomondo? (2006 Italy) It was so moving. I imagine my Sicilian ancestors had a similar immigrant experience. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend.
I look back at this speech, and I will wait to read a transcript, but it seemed to me he had three tasks:
To outline why reform was needed
To counter conservative arguments, specially those that say he doesn’t have the power
and thirdly, which we sometimes miss, to counter arguments from the left that he didn’t do enough.
He did a spectacular job with all three.
With the first, he not only talked about why, but also the benefits of doing so. He brought the humanitarian, moral aspect of it, plus the dollars and cents art of it to the soulless who only think money.
He countered every conservative argument, including the whole concept of amnesty.
And he pointed out exactly what the limits of his powers are and that although we might like to see more done, those extra changes can only be done through legislation. For example, he couldn’t really talk about a pathway to citizenship, because that would be done through Congress. But he does have the power to halt deportation if certain circumstances exist and requirements are met.
Does that mean we won’t hear screams from both sides? Of course not. But he was not only talking to those who disagree but also to those of us who do agree and he basically said, here are your arguments, use them when you hear the crap coming out.
Well done, Mr. President.
PS, his presentation was superb, low key, non-dramatic, but when he went to the emotional core, you could tell he meant it from the heart.
I love and so appreciate our President. His heart is full and his core is in tack as always. Thank you, Mr. President. May your spirit continue to move amongst the millions and millions of grateful people in this nation and around the world. You always make me proud, and I give thanks each day for your leadership. May God continue to grant you wisdom and love as you do your job for the people of this nation. HZ
My mom told me that when FDR was elected for a third term (and probably would have had a 4th, if he’d lived) the Repubs passed the Presidential term limits. Then, when they had Ike (who was popular) and Reagan, they realized they had stabbed themselves in the foot.
Ha Ha! but even, though I wish we could have him for another term, he’s been, like, a super-president, so, as much as I would like him to be President in perpetuity, he will definitely deserve a rest!
It simply sickens me. I don’t even want to think about it. I used this as one of my examples in my feed back to that email survey the DNC asked us to respond to yesterday. I didn’t mince words. I ripped them a new one for sure!
Does POTUS do things without thinking them through? Maybe.
But Meta, isn’t it at least possible that the outcome of the midterms is not unwelcome to the WH?
Again, all the candidates Clintonland pushed so hard for Lost.
Still, they will try to run on improving on PBO’s faulty moves: fixing this and that.
Arrogantly claiming that Clinton could have or will do better because…..what??? her amazing legislative record???? Her treaties with other countries??? What?
vicki, the smile on pbo’s face since the midterms has led me to believe he is not at all unhappy with the outcome. i don’t know exactly why, but then he’s always many steps ahead of me :)
I don’t know how to say or describe this but I actually FELT a collective still when PBO began to talk about the “Strangers…” It’s like everyone who was watching the speech at that moment froze on those words…and I sensed this as it was happening…

The scripture he quoted about strangers went straight to my heart. I also thought of Chuck Todd’s book “The Stranger” That scripture choice was not accidental. I’ve tried everything and cannot access the speech. Doesn’t play here or on You Tube or White House. Very frustrating. Thanks all for the summaries, although I would love to see it.
jackiegrumbacher, I’m where I can’t access anything on YouTube, so I hunted around and was able to find Mighty PBO’s magnificent speech on C-Span.org . The video was a little bit fuzzy, but the audio, his voice and spirit and power and heart came through crystal clear and you could see his expression just fine. Like looking through a window during the rain. Might be tears of gratitude pride and joy. Hope you can find it soon. No, we are traveling in Asia right now, and internet access can be a challenge. Some websites are blocked. Then just after I posted that message to you, the mighty Chipster emblazoned a beautiful crystal clear link to the great speech on the new post. After you mentioned that I started having problems.. Computer is my problem.
Have I told you my DIL grew-up in Thailand? Sounds beautiful.

The custody and immigration status of a young Cuban boy, Elián González (born December 6, 2025), was at the center of a heated 2000 controversy involving the governments of Cuba and the United States, González’s father, Juan Miguel González Quintana, González’s other relatives in Miami, Florida, and in Cuba, and Miami’s Cuban American community.
González’s mother drowned in November 1999 while attempting to leave Cuba with her son and her boyfriend to get to the United States.[1][2] Th Finally found the backstory from years ago. Thanks Google & Wikipedia.

He rightly CALLED out the House GOP for sitting on the Senate bill for a year and a half!
Felons, not families; criminals, not children.
Felons not Families
love that: felons, not families, criminals, not children
Ha, Ha, quoted Bush Light on this issue.

Went there about the threat of a govt. shut down. PBO, unleashed!!!
Make it plain, Mr. President!
Chicago NBC and ABC are televising it. CBS local is not.

I am so proud of my President.
immigration debate will show character of this nation
Humanizing immigrants; showing how they are like all of us.
Wow!!!!!!!!! What a speech.
