A wonderful good morning TOD! I posted this last night but am posting again. In all the days of seeing PBO as he is now, I sometimes forget about that young man who left Hawaii to find his way in the world. This article is a reminder of those parts of our current president. As Caroline noted, makes his “stranger” part of the speech last night that much more poignant. It is also a reminder of just how hard change is, and how ugly it may be during the struggle. While I don’t agree with everything Beinart says, it is well worth the read.

The only quarrel I have with this article, Firefox, is that President Obama has always fulfilled his promise, but many people, caught up in their own self-righteousness, refused to see it.
I agree Jackie, although I think I see it as more of the instant gratification mentality that pervades our society. I laughed when I heard in the background last night someone fall back on that old “he could have done it” when he had Congress. Let’s just forget he was dealing with a global economy on the verge of collapse, two wars, etc. But again, it reminded me of the “Dreams of My Father” author that PBO was many years ago, which I sometimes forget in seeing him in this role on day to day basis. And I do think the dreams of that young man were on display last night.
Chips, you and Nerdy did an absolutely magnificent job last night. I would have destroyed my computer if you hadn’t posted the president’s speech in a way I could access it. So much goodness, so much emotion it was like a mini 2012 all over again. I hope you and your mother are coping with the loss of your uncle. There have been so many emotional highs and lows recently, it’s like being on a roller coaster. And our president has probably just gotten started on the things he’s going to accomplish in the next two years. Hang on to your hats.
Oh Jackie, thank you - you’re so thoughtful. My mother’s fine, relieved my uncle’s suffering is over, but obviously heartbroken over his loss. Did I mention that he and my father died on the same date, eight years apart? It’s such an amazing coincidence, can’t get over it. Thanks again Jackie.

The President announced weeks ago that he would enact an EO on immigration after the election. Was the Right surprised by the president acting before the end of the year ? Or does the EO goes further than they thought it would ?
No surprise here. The Right is going to muddle the waters. Look for them to use “amnesty” over and over and over again. Watch them working hard to create a narrative implying that the President is giving a PERMANENT legal status to undocumented immigrants.
The hope I have is this EO is far less complicated than the ACA, so the media pundits will be able to understand it (!!) without too much work (!!) , and maybe, MAYBE, will try a bit harder to explain the facts this time.
Because, make no mistake, the GOP will try the same tactic they used for the ACA: inundate the national conversation with lies, distortions, exaggerated fears.

I just wanted to give a huge thank you for the wonder that is this community. I only wish more people could find you and actually learn what is happening with this wonderful president. My husband cried after last night’s speech and I am just in awe of his strength and determination. How is it that he can continue on through the hatefulness? Thank you, again! Oh, the CBS station out of Columbus, Ohio carried the speech. I will write and thank them today.
Important to remember that it is not just Latinos impacted by this decision. There are plenty of Asian, African and Europeans here that fall under this EO as well. The ripples in those communities will be just as important, if not as visible, as those in the Latino community.
I wonder how/whether this affect green card holders, which are like gold to many high- and bio-tech companies.
I’ve mentioned before that in the last 15 years, there’s been a significant influx of Asians in my suburban SoCal community, nearly all of them South Korean.
During these six years President Obama have come to understand these Republicans like John Boehner. I just wanted to give a huge thank you for the wonder that is this community. I only wish more people could find you and actually learn what is happening with this wonderful president. My husband cried after last night’s speech and I am just in awe of his strength and determination. How is it that he can continue on through the hatefulness? Thank you, again! Oh, the CBS station out of Columbus, Ohio carried the speech. I will write and thank them today.

Important to remember that it is not just Latinos impacted by this decision. There are plenty of Asian, African and Europeans here that fall under this EO as well. The ripples in those communities will be just as important, if not as visible, as those in the Latino community.

Remember when the DOW jumped a smidge over 100 points the day after the election and it was called the GOP bounce. So far today it is up 160 points and all the credit is being given to China for cutting its interest rate. No doubt that is part of it, but you better believe a big chunk of that bounce is a result of the EO. Is that recognized? Who am I trying to kid. This is US media we are talking about.
Well, I was probably only person in TODville to listen to Josh Earnest on my local radio station, but the end of the interview was funny.
Josh said that elected officials need to get to work, and the interviewer said, “You just used the word ‘work’ referring to Congress,” which prompted a hearty laugh from Josh.

The GOP in congress has caused continuous hurt to the US for the past 6 years (and the 8 before that) and still people vote for them. I will always believe that the media is 90% of the cause of this. If they pointed out the truth of the RWNJs in congress and in state legislatures this would NEVER happen - but thye support the stupid beyond understanding.
