me
Hi, “me”!
Hi theo :-)
My comment is THANK YOU CHIPS AND NW!!!
#TruthAndReconciliation
TY, Nerdy:) Evening everyone
#TruthAndReconciliation
What’s the plan? (this is from smartypants link that pf58 posted) I need to see plans of ACTION. Thank you Nancy!
I hear so many people using their voices to stir up outrage while offering precious little by way of solutions. Eventually the outrage becomes exhausting and that’s when cynicism and inertia sets it. Its either that or we move on to the next outrage and blame “them” (usually President Obama these days) for not fixing it all for us.
So here are some things I’ve been hearing about as part of the solution:
Just because the video of Officer Pantaleo killing Eric Garner didn’t result in an indictment does not mean that body cameras for law enforcement are worthless. I’d suggest that we wouldn’t even know about this incident if it weren’t for the video. Beyond that, I doubt that SC State Trooper Sean Goubert would have ever been charged were it not for the video produced by his web cam.
Everyone should immediately check in to who their District Attorney (sometimes referred to as County Prosecutor) is and find out their position on racism and law enforcement. When it comes to the killing of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, the person most singularly responsible in each case for a lack of indictment are the prosecutors who presented the cases before the grand juries. Neither of them wanted an indictment, so it didn’t happen. Often these prosecutors are elected in off-year elections. You can bet that the police unions know who they want elected and get their constituents out to vote. We need to do the same.
Even with the above, I think that having a police shooting automatically trigger an independent prosecutor is an idea worth exploring. Of course to be really effective, it would have to be a federal requirement. Often federal law enforcement funds are tied to these kinds of reforms. So that might be the route to take in order to make sure it is enacted nationally.
GGail, replied to this on last thread. There are real concrete steps that we can take if we choose to do so and, as Nancy points out, most of it will have to be done on the local level and will require persistence and patience. As I mentioned to Prettyfoot, there are many local entities that can help begin a real dialogue in our communities-churches, teachers, libraries, universities and colleges and existing community groups. And we all need to reach out to people by actually listening to them instead of imposing our own opinions on them. Listening with compassion is the first step to healing.
Thank you jackieg. I’m having a real hard time processing the endless show of injustice that is being revealed and I need concrete action plans to feel like there will be Change.
When I was 16 years old, my father was beaten by 4 white policemen and we when he didn’t come home from work that night, we couldn’t locate him for 4 days. We finally found him in a hospital with 20 stitches in his head from being hit by their baton.
I’m having a real hard time right now.
{{{GGail}}} I’m so, so sorry to hear this. Hold tight..we’ll find a way through this together.
hugs.
{{{{GGail}}}} I wish I could hug you GGail because I just don’t know what to say. Can’t imagine what you’re feeling, but sending endless love your way.
df, amk & Chips, thanks.
Now you guys can understand why I haven’t grabbed the pom poms cheering the protesters. The GJ decision regarding Mike Brown hurt, but the decision regarding Eric Garner kicked me real hard. He looks so much like my father in the face and all I could think…”that could have been my father…dead”. The officers that beat my dad were eventually found guilty and the City paid a handsome sum, but…he could have died. You know this happened many many moons ago, yet here we are STILL.
I need to see concrete plans and action. Tweets, facebook, etc., are to me right now as empty as eating those ricecakes (remember them)
Oh God, what a story.
I’m so heartened by all these protests GGail, but like you, I don’t know if they’ll amount to anything, if anything will change. From racist cops to a system that protects them, how do you fix that? I have no clue, but I just cling to the hope that something will change. Love ya.
Oh GGail, my heart aches for you. I can’t even begin to comprehend your pain. Virtual ((((((((hugs)))))))))))) I to am needing quidelines. It is very hard here in MT to even discuss all that is going on. There are so many racists here.I discussed this with one person today who just couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. And this is while the triai of the man who killed the German HS exchange student. There defense so far is how afraid they were. It is all so sick.
You will be in my thoughts GGail. No words …
((((((HUGS))))))
To GGail

So sorry to hear about your father’s ordeal, GGail, and the effect that had on his family. It’s horrific. Much love to you.
Oh my God, I am so sorry GGail. What a terrifying experience for a teenager. Thank heaven your father recovered.
Well, I’m hearing besides body cameras there needs to be an independent prosecutor process in every community to review and prosecute cases where police are accused of bringing harm to citizens. Obviously these prosecutors who work with the police every day, have primary loyalties to the police over the average citizen, especially persons of color. That has to be addressed so that we can all be safe from police violence.
yup, the prosecutor, by the very definition of their job, have a conflict of interest. In India, such police brutality enquiries are headed by retired judges along with some prominent civil leaders if there was a mass brutality.
This is a good action plan. I think most of it is occuring at the federal level. As part of any plan, I would like the DOJ to release a profile of white officers who kill unarmed black males. I think any white officer who fits this profile should NOT be hired by any local law enforcement agency where they are likely to come into contact with people of color. White males who fit the profile would simply be too dangerous to do police work. The problem these white male officers have cannot be trained out of them. We have to accept the fact that white males who fit the profile are too dangerous for police work as they are likely to cause serious bodily injury or death to individual members of a community.
Nerdy, these images are so uplifting just when we thought we could never be lifted up again. Thank you so much for compiling them.
Thank you, Chips.
ebola/isis/police killing comparison is the true ‘indictment’ of US ‘law & order’ policy. Unless DOJ moves in quickly and takes some strong actions that are seen publicly, these protests will fizzle out. The coroner’s report is a good cause to cuff the killer right now.
We all need to keep watching, amk … and remember the protests in Ferguson started back in August, and are ongoing. Some are new start-ups because of the GJ non-indictments, of course.
The protesters need to have the hope of some action being taken and some such action from the govt will go a long way to quell their upcoming cynicism.
Definitely. The AG announced his department’s involvement today on the latest non-action (as I’m sure you know).
You are so right about the standing urgency to try to head off cynicism in all of these cases. But I personally feel that we’re way past avoiding the “upcoming” cynicism for many people who pretty much are already in the “lost hope” stage.
Not sure when and how we’re going to recover, but we must - for the good of each individual and for the common good.
“We have met the enemy and he is us.”
Nerdy, our warrior, bless you for continuing to open our eyes and fill our hearts. Your resilience, courage and brilliance never cease to amaze me.
Thank you, Jackie.
The two grannies pic is a very good motivator for the yung’uns.
To quote “Dune”: “Father! The Sleeper has awakened!”
Can one imagine this happening in any other age than the Age of Obama? These protesters are imbibing his central message: WE are the change.
Well, there was the time when he was first born, back in the ’60s!
To quote Don Henley: We haven’t had the spirit here since 1969
You’ve done it again Nerdy. You continue to keep us well-informed. Thank you!
Notice people of all races, looks like, are and have been out participating in the protests. Even the grannies! The way it should and must be. Enough!
Thanks for bringing us all these, NW, or some of us would have missed seeing the “critical mass” of protests around the country. It’s so heartbreaking to know that the reasons are the same week after week, but the names change each passing day.
Multiple helicopters still circling over my head in lower Manhattan. This is one important difference from Ferguson, where the FPD closed the air space over St. Louis.
Mayor de Blasio and police Chief Bratton are demonstrating decency and respect for the demonstrators.
What a difference this is from Mike Bloomberg and his over-the-top mishandling of Occupy.
Great news.
The only good thing about people like Mike Bloomberg is that as soon as they’re gone - and replaced by somebody decent - they’re gone and forgotten, other than shudder value. I don’t live in NYC, but I almost had to take a minute to figure out who Bloomberg used to be. For somebody who bought his way in so he could look important and push around his list of “the unwashed,” he’s one of the biggest has-beens around. Not quite as bad as Rudy, who should just keep his trap shut forever.
is it really true that progressives want to get rid of this man? Talk about a bunch of self defeating assholes.
More likely the media & their 3 progressive mouthpieces are attacking him Jeff - the media works for the GOP.
I think the protests are still peaceful, not sure what this guy means - unless the cops are acting up.
Yet another face book ‘friend’ that I’m going to have to unfriend for pushing an anti-Sharpton bullshit rant.
Protesters in Times Square being arrested.
we need to get rid of the grand jury process. The whole thing is corrupt.
I agree Jeff. We got rid of it in Canada.

To start you off, the Dog is Clinton.
well, the fish and the chicken are eaten often because they are dime a dozen. Especially in murka. :)
of course, the kenyan is the duck. Just look at his bill.
Indeed. :) :)
the chicken is W. and the fish is H.W.?
nah, both are dumbya. His knowledge of world affairs is that of that fish in a bowl and he is a chickenhawk pos.

Ha!
Thank You AG Holder!!!
For years now one of the things that has frustrated me about the “what have you done for me lately” Blackacademics has been their insistence that the Obama administration hasn’t done anything for the African American community. That’s why - back in 2011 - I started writing about DOJ’s investigations into police brutality.
Today we learned that the investigation into Cleveland’s Police Department has resulted in a finding that they have engaged in a pattern and practice of using excessive force. It is horribly sad that this finding comes too late to save the life of Tamir Rice.
