I think Markie thinks government is a game show … and one of them made you “sign in.” Maybe that’s it. Or he’s a dolt. One of them.

The Senate rules are indeed arcane.

This is the best explainer I’ve yet seen (though mostly read articles linked to by TOD), thankfully isn’t written by Mr. White Elite Snob himself, Ezra Klein.

If I read this right, essentially there’s a waiting period required to vote on nominees and Harry Reid was able to kick-start that process today, so that votes for cloture can begin on Monday. It’s still very confusing to me.

Do we get the feeling many GOP are beginning to realize they have no effing clue what governing is all about? Stupid is as Stupid does. Sez Forrest Gump’s Mama.

Always MP - I do believe - with my education at TOD - I know much more about how the US government/congress works than do all the johnny comes latelys in the congress - and I still have masses to learn

              December 14, 2025 at 1:08 am

The difference between you and the johnny comes is that you want to learn, TS. I have this strong suspicion that even the Repubs (and some Dems too) who have been in office for years - like Graham, McCain, Boehner et al haven’t a clue about the under-workings of their House/Senate, much less the newcomers! I think they function like that description Carolyn (?) gave of Dumbo Bush - they only want the Coles notes version which they then can’t bother to read. I bet you their aides could tell some interesting tales!

So Ted Cruz is ignorant of Senate rules as well as obnoxious beyond words. I’m glad his fellow senators turned against him. You don’t start an action like this in the Senate unless you know what you’re doing and have the votes. This was pure stupidity on Cruz’ part.

Excellent selection of tweets, NW, as always. And, yes, what we’ve observed today should make Graham and others very, very concerned.

I shed a tear for Mitch, earlier ….

Combine brilliant strategy on the part of the president with what I suspect is a deep loathing of Ted Cruz among his colleagues and you’ve got the formula for the win on immigration. It would be wonderful to head into Christmas week for once without obsessing over Congressional stupidity.

Well, if we’re really lucky, LL, Congress will get out of town and leave us in peace for a couple of weeks. I always feel safest when they’re not around to screw things up and make our lives miserable.

LL posted this on the last thread. It’s really worth reading the article:

From the article (the cat was adopted as a kitten by a Catholic friary next door, but spends his days in the University library):
“Father Dermott Martin, one of four friars at the chaplaincy, said: ‘He ignores us when he sees us in the square.

He ignores us indoors as well unless he wants feeding.’”

    LOL.

      Bill,

Your state is in the news today!

Did you see your Senator’s tweet on the last thread?

And TNmtnGirl informed TODville that University of Oregon (go Ducks!) Samoan-American QB won the Heisman Trophy.

It’s well worth viewing the short video — both Marcus and his Dad teared up (and others) with his heartfelt thanks. The audience looked like the Obama Coalition.

He reminded me of President Obama, thanking everyone who made his accomplishments possible — and you just know that PBO was cheering too, to see such a humble young man from his home state win such an honor.

After a constant stream of bad news from the sports world, this was a refreshing change.

Bobfr, you are Bad! And we love you for it!! IN. THEIR. FACE! <3 :bear: :) I have a feeling PBO is smiling away to himself in that Oval Office which suits him so well. Or maybe he and the beautiful women in his family are walking in that wonderland of Light down on the main floor. Goodnight, TOD, I think this has been a good day in America. <3

Of the 40 no votes on the spending bill, 16 were GOPers.

Of the 56 yes votes on the spending bill, 32 were Dems/Indies.

      4 Senators didn’t vote.

If all DEMS who voted no had voted, the tally would have been 72 no, 24 yes.

Even adjusting for the shift in total number of Dems and GOPers in the 114th, and, importantly, recognizing that more crazies will join with Cruz, et al., in the 114th, well, that’s what Mitch will spend two more years of his miserable life confronting. Scum meet Karma.

#BackBarack (and Senator Reid and Nancy Pelosi)

Wow! I’ve been away for a few hours and come back, and so much has happened! The protest marches…….are astounding….I cried as I looked at the pictures and read the tweets. This is an amazing phenomenon!
Then, the funding bill passed, PBO’s nominees are going to be voted on and confirmed, so much goodness. Once again Harry Reid showed his knowledge of and how to use the arcane Senate procedures. Senate acknowledges PBO’s executive order is constitutional. Also, Miss Lindsey is peeved…..all good.

Thank you for this place chips, and for all the hard work NW and other bts. I am amazed at what happened today. It is good…..and portends good things, I firmly believe.

Good night, and congratulations to the Heisman trophy winner, and best wishes to our POTUS and family for a wonderful vacation FINALLY! in Hawaii!!! Oh yes, this is the President Chuck Todd proclaimed a lame duck on November 5.

Hi! Those of you who are still here could go back to the end of the last post and choose your pic of the month for Jan, Feb and Mar then come back and share your choices. I’ll record them….oh, somewhere. My goal is to have the top 12 chosen by the end of the month so that TOD can choose its pic of the 2014 year somewhere around the 30th or 31st.
