Happy Valentines Day to the TOD family. Hope your day is filled with lots of love from friends and family. We’re facing dangerous weather here this weekend, with possible 60 mile an hour winds that may take down power lines and a wind chill well below zero. Frostbite is an issue as are flying objects from anything not tied down. Our president chose his trip to California at the perfect time. Would that I were there too.

      GM JackieG,

I’m fascinated by weather (must be the gardener-putter in me), but OMG.

Check out this short GIF (loop) video.

I’ve never seen anything like it — the weather forecast pattern actually looks like it’s giving a left hook to the NE, with PA squarely in the middle!!!

((( jackieg, asherinboston, lynn in central NY, others in TODville who will wisely hunker down for a romantic blizzard-bound weekend )))

      February 14, 2025 at 9:24 am

      P.S.

Not to add insult to injury (isn’t your son in sunny CA?), but since you’re blizzard-bound, thought you might like something to look forward to. ;)

In the Fall, I rescued a tomato plant someone had set next to a nearby dumpster — it was completely brown and yellow, with just one or two hints of green — but it was in a nice large container with a metal trellis, so nothing to lose by taking it home and pruning off the dead branches.

It’s now thriving, with 12 fruits getting larger by the day (would be 13 but I accidently snipped one off :( ) — and there’s lots of blossoms which may become fruit too! :)

We raised tomatoes (in the ground, not in containers) when I was growing up, but only during the heat of summer — strawberries were the first vegetables that were planted — usually this time of year.

I’ll take a photo and post it here soon.

Here’s to a bountiful Spring for you and others suffering through Blizzard XXX 2015.

Interesting essay….good foundation to start talking about the meaning of race in this country…and why we keep fighting the same battles over and over again…

    ***************************************

“Whiteness was never about skin color or a natural inclination to stand with one’s own; it was designed to racialize power and conveniently dehumanize outsiders and the enslaved. It has always been a calculated game with very real economic motivations and benefits.”

” If students are taught that whiteness is based on a history of exclusion, they might easily see that there is nothing in the designation as “white” to be proud of. Being proud of being white doesn’t mean finding your pale skin pretty or your Swedish history fascinating. It means being proud of the violent disenfranchisement of those barred from this category. Being proud of being black means being proud of surviving this ostracism. Be proud to be Scottish, Norwegian or French, but not white.”

“The current divide is a white construction, and it is up to white people to do the necessary work to dismantle the system borne from the slave trade, instead of ignoring it or telling people of color to “get over” its extant legacy. ”

    **************************
Interesting essay….good foundation to start talking about the meaning of race in this country…and why we keep fighting the same battles over and over again…but this article is an intellectual discussion of race….and i suppose in a classroom…we could begin this dialogue…it would be interesting for some folks to discover that they were not always included in the privileged “white” category….

the hardest part that is not addressed …is the emotion around race…the sheer hate that is promoted and generated by the RW and media…the powers that benefit from the hatefulness that comes with racism…

how do you tackle this emotion…how do get folks to set that aside….it runs deep in America

      February 14, 2025 at 8:42 am

I don’t see a conversation starting based on this. It’s just too accusatory for most white people. You and I know it’s accurate but from my experience there is no way whites are going to buy it. Even if they did the wave of justification would be like a tidal wave. We see it in social media now. Something gets perpetuated by a person of another race and it’s one big chorus of “ah hah. See how they are. We were right.” It’s going to be even harder in 2016 with certain candidates on both sides of the aisles dogwhistling to restore for lack of a better term white supremacy.

      • 31 prettyfoot58
        February 14, 2025 at 9:11 am

i do not see it as accusatory…i see it as Historical…folks were not considered “white” til they came to America…
it is a way of getting folks to acknowledge that “whiteness” is a false structure based on power…privilege and control…we keep fighting the same battles over and over again…coddling white folks about their role in perpetuating and maintaining racism has not brought about Justice for POC……etc……i have grown weary of holding their hand…
in the President’s speech on race …he speaks about white resentment towards blk folks and others…that resentment needs to be focused on those forces that keep not only blk folks from moving forward but white folks as well… but white folks would have to let go of the white privilege/racism…is this in the realm of possibilities…i do not know…but try we must

        • 32 DerBingle (@DerBingle2)
          February 14, 2025 at 9:26 am

I agree with you as I stated above you and I know it’s accurate but there’s a certain predominant mindset about the folks we’re talking about that won’t go anywhere near this. You see it now when it comes to the most minor of things. The posture gets very defensive. As for letting go of white privilege/racism, I don’t see it.

I go over to some of these boards to check out their criticism of the President. It’s race. How else to explain not giving someone props for saving the economy, opening up new industries and restoring America’s standing? But they all swear they’re smarter and better than him and that all this good news is one big lie. That’s white privilege/racism to the max. Yes we have to try but I’m not sure how we do that when the perpetrators are in denial and telling them how wrong they are doesn’t seem to get them there.

whenever the President travels …he talks to the young people…he sees the future of America/the World laying in the hands of young people…perhaps that is where we must start…

i am reminded of two speeches that the gave…the speech in Israel…and the speech he gave in NotreDame…in both he called on the young people to change the future…

And the worst part is that our MSM is complicit in this *wink* endorsement of bigotry and lies.

I can’t see why else they would publish this article (that PF58 posted last night):

            The article opens with:
“Here are a few other times the Obamas blew our minds with their in-the-know pop-culture references and humor. (Which seems to happen a lot when they want to promote their pet projects.)”

            As I said last night:
            * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Enabling millions of Americans to afford/obtain medical insurance is described as “their pet project(s).”

IMHO, this was completely uncalled for. Did the MSM describe sending thousands of Americans to their death, maiming and/or PTSD as GWB’s “pet project?”

And they also included Malia and Sasha as one of the top 9 — completely unnecessary, since they omitted Colbert’s Decree, Please Proceed Governor, singing Al Green, dancing with Ellen, slow jamming the news with Jimmy Fallon, etc.

I am watching Steve Kornacki this morning. I don’t know why. Anyway they are all talking about Scott Walker running for President and how it doesn’t matter that he has a college degree. He needs to say it if you are going to have a real discussion. But I guess that is the problem with the media.

In 2004 Al Sharpton ran for President and he didn’t have a college degree, Al dropped out after two years of college. Although it’s not a requirement that you have to have a college degree, it does seem as though Walker not having a degree won’t be an issue for him. For me personally I want my President to be highly educated and distinguished. I’m not saying that a college degree is the end all, for heaven’s sake Sarah Palin has a degree. It just goes back to the old saying that if you’re black you have to be twice as good, but it does seem like that saying is slowly going away, at least I hope.

        Good Morning TODVille.

Don, I agree with your point. But Walker without a college degree tells you how much education, student loans, push for free 2-year college will mean to him. I don’t want to see Walker anywhere in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. He will be bad for the next generation which includes my children.

        February 14, 2025 at 9:40 am

PBO has definitely raised the bar on what we expect from future presidents…from intellect to character. Aside from our sense of loss once he leaves office, it will be a miracle to find someone who will meet or beat the standard PBO has set.

      • 57 bella2758

If the Koch Brothers order Walker to go get a college degree he will, after all Scott Walker is the Koch Brothers Puppet.

I am thinking that there are many citizens without college degrees and the GOP always tries to paint educated candidates as elitist. Those without degrees may vote for Walker since he is just like them.

Gary Owens, Announcer of ‘Laugh-In’ Fame, Dies at 80

Radio, TV and voiceover performer Gary Owens died on Feb. 12 at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Owens, who was 80, had been a diabetic since the age of 8.

Owens was probably best known as the announcer on NBC’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” (1968-73), with his trademark hand-over-the-ear announcing style. On the show, John Wayne once imitated Owens announcing. The phrase Gary created on his KMPC radio show, “Beautiful downtown Burbank,” later became a nightly catchphrase on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.”

Owens also lent his voice to more than 3,000 cartoons, providing the voice of “Space Ghost” as well as Blue Falcon, Roger Ramjet, Powdered Toast Man and even Batman. He was animated as himself in “Garfield and Friends,” “The Fantastic Four,” “Eek the Cat” and “Bobby’s World.”

Owens had a mellifluous baritone voice with impeccable nuanced timing, and was equally adept at comedy or deadpan delivery.

It’s like this General was talking this morning about Iraq said, it can’t be the U.S. who want this more then the people of Iraq, they must stand up and fight ISIS themselves. We can help, but the people in the Middle East who are against terrorists must stand up and fight it.

Pope Francis appoints 20 new cardinals.

The Pope has appointed 20 new cardinals, boosting the number of men from developing countries in the group that will elect his successor.

The new cardinals include the first prelates from Myanmar, Tonga and Ethiopia.

Fifteen are under 80, making them eligible to vote for the next pope.

For the first time, there are more non-European than European cardinals in the electoral body as the Pope seeks to reflect the Church globally.

With the appointments, made during a colourful celebration at the Vatican, the Pope has underlined his determination to change the balance of power in the Church and make it more representative, says the BBC’s Vatican correspondent, David Willey.

An international team of scientists is to try to develop a wholly artificial vaccine to combat polio.

The disease is very close to being eradicated, with only a few hundred cases now reported worldwide each year.

The hope is that the new approach can address some shortcomings in an existing vaccine, and so help eliminate polio all together.

The World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are providing a $674,000 (£438,000) grant.

So the news told us that George W. Bush little big head brother got a big endorsement today. Who you might ask? Barbara Bush, his Mother who said earlier that Jeb shouldn’t run. I’m sure the family pressure the old lady and she changed her tune. Makes no difference, we the American people ( at least the sensible ones) have not changed our mind, we are fed up with the Bushes. I’m just thankful there is not another Bush who think they should be President because Daddy and big brother was.
