This is the horror that occurs when you don’t view people as human beings because of the color of their skin

****

James Jameson, heir to the Jameson Irish Whiskey company, once bought a 10-year-old slave girl for six handkerchiefs because he wanted to sketch the event as cannibals killed, mutilated, and finally, ate her According to a report from The New York Times, Jameson had a fascination with cannibalism and wanted to experience the act firsthand. Jameson was on a trip in Africa in 1890 when an opportunity to fulfill his sick fantasy presented itself because he and his translator happened upon a cannibalistic tribe. Jameson consulted the tribe’s chiefs who told him if he wanted to witness the event, he’d have to buy a slave girl to be killed. Jameson returned a few minutes later with a 10-year-old girl he bought from a nearby slave trader for six handkerchiefs. The translator then approached the chiefs and said, “This is a present from a white man who desires to see her eaten.” According to an eye witness report of the scene, the cannibals tied the girl to a tree and stabbed her twice in the belly. The natives then cut pieces off of her body as Jameson sat sketching in his notebook. Jameson and his translator then made their way to chief’s hut where Jameson finished his sketches in watercolor.

The same holds true once again

****

In 1919, in the wake of World War I, black sharecroppers unionized in Arkansas, unleashing a wave of white vigilantism and mass murder that left 237 people dead. The visits began in the fall of 1918, just as World War I ended. At his office in Little Rock, Arkansas, attorney Ulysses S. Bratton listened as African American sharecroppers from the Delta told stories of theft, exploitation, and endless debt. A man named Carter had tended 90 acres of cotton, only to have his landlord seize the entire crop and his possessions. From the town of Ratio, in Phillips County, Arkansas, a black farmer reported that a plantation manager refused to give sharecroppers an itemized account for their crop. Another sharecropper told of a landlord trying “to starve the people into selling the cotton at his own price. They ain’t allowing us down there room to move our feet except to go to the field.” No one could know it at the time, but within a year these inauspicious meetings would lead to one of the worst episodes of racial violence in U.S. history. Initiated by whites, the violence—by any measure, a massacre—claimed the lives of 237 African Americans, according to a just released report from the Equal Justice Initiative. The death toll was unusually high, but the use of racial violence to subjugate blacks during this time was not uncommon. As the Equal Justice Initiative observes, “Racial terror lynching was a tool used to enforce Jim Crow laws and racial segregation—a tactic for maintaining racial control by victimizing the entire African American community, not merely punishment of an alleged perpetrator for a crime.” This was certainly true of the massacre in Phillips County, Arkansas.

The thoughts of this even being done to an animal would push me over the edge, but a 10-year-old child? And it was 1890 - not friggin’ 1590. Jesus.

As an heir to the family business he was probably one of those repulsive creatures who swanned around Africa with his slaves, raping and hunting. What a truly horrific breed of people.

NASCAR suspended Kurt Busch indefinitely Friday after a judge said the former champion almost surely choked and beat a former girlfriend last fall and there was a “substantial likelihood” of more domestic violence from him in the future.

    So sad & true:

…and yet someone who has no skin in the game felt compelled to say this:

“As an American, I find Rudy Giuliani’s vicious comments about President Obama ‘not loving America’ to be profoundly offensive to both the President and the Office,” Schultz said in a statement…..He called Giuliani’s remarks “yet another example of the extreme rhetoric that continues to divide our country rather than uniting us in common purpose.”

This person is once again UNDERESTIMATING the importance of the man himself - Barack Obama. He is claiming that all Mitt needed to win 2012 was a “boots on the ground” operation similar that of PBO.

The truth is, Romney had superior funding, and an entire RW AND “left” corporate media slavishly devoted to him and giving a pass on virtually every issue. Mitt Romney maxed out on the racist vote, the “I-don’t want-to-be-racist- but-i’m-still-not-voting-for-the-Black-guy” vote, and the 1% vote.

Thank goodness, he happened to be running against Barack Obama.

    Nerdy, you educated me today.

I had NO idea of the Jameson story.

Reading the story I felt a level of horror and disgust. And this happened in 1890, when, supposedly, slavery had been eliminated. Of course, even today we have stories of slavery still existing in the West, so it shouldn’t be surprising that Jameson could indulge his sick mania for a price.

Until we all see each other as precious beings, stories like this will continue. At times I despair. But hope is more rewarding.

If you saw this Jameson story in a horror movie, you would think it was a disgusting, over-the-top figment of the writer’s imagination. That it happened to a living human being is beyond imagining. Jamison himself doesn’t even qualify as a human being. He was a fiend without a soul or a heart. I hope he had a miserable life.

“either you work this out by the end of the week, or we’ll resume next week in DC (paraphrased)”

Also, the US needs to rethink how much its daily economy is tied to China.

      http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/20/business/for-lunar-new-year-port-dispute-hampers-festivities.html?ref=todayspaper

      From the article:
“The National Retail Federation warns that a full strike or lockout at the West Coast ports costs the United States economy $2.1 billion a day in higher transport costs and missed sales. A similar, 10-day shutdown of West Coast ports in 2002 cost the economy about $1 billion a day.”

The local @knx1070 news radio station hosted a panel discussion today on the Academy called “Fade to White.” They asked for a representative from the Academy, but were declined.

TOD and twitter are much more informative on this (and many other) subject(s).

There was some discussion about last year, but they failed to mention that most of the the Academy recognizes POC — are slaves, hired help (Gone with the Wind, Driving Miss Daisy, etc.), not for roles in which POC are on equal footing with the roles recognized for whites. They did make the point that the boxoffice revenue excuse (e.g., Sony) is baloney — that POC often enhance overseas revenue.

News you won’t find anywhere on US media but you will find at TOD ….

“Sources close to the government have said that the Taliban for the first time have shown a green signal to enter into peace negotiations with the Afghan government.

The group would possibly attend talks without any conditions, the sources said, adding the parleys would begin likely in three weeks.

It comes as these days President Ashraf Ghani continues his consultations regarding the peace talks with the religious scholars, civil society groups and the High Peace Council (HPC).

HPC members, however, insists the reconciliation body would play a key role in these talks, hoping constructive outcomes of the negotiations.”

The discovery of heroes is rarely linear or obvious. They usually sneak up on you. Afghanistan’s new first lady, Rula Ghani, is that kind of woman.

In an interview at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Wednesday night, this unassuming former stay-at-home mom courageously issued a series of “dares.”

She dared Islamic fundamentalists to reach back in their own history to recall the role of strong, influential women. Bill O’Reilly Responds. We Annotate.
The Fox News host still hasn’t gotten back to us, but here’s his monologue—factchecked.

    —By David Corn
    | Fri Feb. 20, 2015 8:02 PM EST

“On Thursday, Mother Jones published an article by Daniel Schulman and me documenting how Fox News host Bill O’Reilly has mischaracterized his wartime reporting experience. It noted that he has repeatedly stated that during his short stint as a CBS correspondent in the 1980s, he was in the “war zone” during the Falklands war between the United Kingdom and Argentina in 1982. He once claimed he had heroically rescued his cameraman in “a war zone in Argentina, in the Falklands,” while being chased by army soldiers. Yet no American journalist reached the war zone in the Falkland Islands during this conflict. O’Reilly and his colleagues covered the war from Buenos Aires, which was 1,200 miles from the fighting.

O’Reilly responded to the story by launching a slew of personal invective. He did not respond to the details of the story. Instead, he called me a “liar,” a “left-wing assassin,” and a “despicable guttersnipe.” He said that I deserve “to be in the kill zone.” (You can read one of my responses here.) And in his show-opening “Talking Points memo” monologue on Friday evening, he continued the name-calling.

In a way, it’s impossible to win a debate with O’Reilly because he is not bound by reality.”
