    First Lady Obama also does a great job in exposing the culture and historical landmarks of the countries she visits. Her descriptions are so vivid and convincing that it triggers one’s desire to view them up close.

      On my way to church, but want to say that the bar owner is trying to deflect responsibility because if had given the student enough time , he would have heard the explanation about the two different zip codes. He knew those officers were hanging nearby.

      Congrats Nena on First.

    Georgia State coach Ron Hunter said his team couldn’t possibly be sad after his team’s NCAA Tournament loss to Xavier considering what the team’s tourney appearance meant for their school. But as soon as he began talking about his son, the waterworks turned on.

        His mother is an American citizen therefore according to the 14th Amendment, he is also considered a native-born citizen and therefore can run for President. It makes all the birther for President Obama nonsense because no one disputed her birthplace at all.

        Truthfully, GxG, I think it would be a waste of her valuable time. Cruz, and others like him have their talking points, and that’s all they have. No sense, IMO, giving them a platform because once you do, you’re conceding some validity to their arguments. You’re saying you think they have something to say worthy of our listening ears - and they don’t!

      I have no idea how much Starbucks pays their employees, but can you imagine having a job where you have to engage customers in conversations about race? You work two jobs just to keep a roof over your head and some billionaire with nothing to do sends down a fucking edict from on high forcing you to talk about something that he or she doesn’t have to worry about, let alone talk about.

      • 62 Bobfr (@Our4thEstate)
        March 22, 2025 at 4:29 pm

        It didn’t work out so well, Don, for reasons such as the crucial one that you highlight.

        However, it has evidently catalyzed reflection within Starbucks management and they clearly have no intention in stopping the push to broaden the conversation and expand their efforts to effect change.

        ==============================

        This is the memo CEO Schultz released a bit earlier today:

        Dear partners,

        I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to every one of you for your fearless and energetic support of the Race Together initiative. Our objective from the very start of this effort — dating back to our first open forum in Seattle last December — was to stimulate conversation, empathy and compassion toward one another, and then to broaden that dialogue beyond just our Starbucks family to the greater American public by using our scale for good.

        After a historic Annual Shareholders Meeting that focused on diversity and inequality, and an initial push for much-needed national discussion around these difficult topics, it is time for us to take stock of where we are, what we have learned from our efforts so far, and what is next.

        This phase of the effort — writing “Race Together” (or placing stickers) on cups, which was always just the catalyst for a much broader and longer term conversation — will be completed as originally planned today, March 22.

        But this initiative is far from over. We have a number of planned Race Together activities in the weeks and months to come: more partner open forums, three more special sections co-produced with USA TODAY over the course of the next year, more open dialogue with police and community leaders in cities across our country, a continued focus on jobs and education for our nation’s young people plus our commitment to hire 10,000 opportunity youth over the next three years, expanding our store footprint in urban communities across the country, and new partnerships to foster dialogue and empathy and help bridge the racial and ethnic divides within our society that have existed for so many years.

        While there has been criticism of the initiative — and I know this hasn’t been easy for any of you — let me assure you that we didn’t expect universal praise. The heart of Race Together has always been about humanity: the promise of the American Dream should be available to every person in this country, not just a select few. We leaned in because we believed that starting this dialogue is what matters most. We are learning a lot. And will always aim high in our efforts to make a difference on the issues that matter most.

        I want to thank those of you who took time this week to share what you were seeing, hearing, feeling and thinking as we rolled out Race Together across the country. An issue as tough as racial and ethnic inequality requires risk-taking and tough-minded action. And let me reassure you that our conviction and commitment to the notion of equality and opportunity for all has never been stronger.

        Take care of yourselves and each other. I am proud to be your partner.

        With great respect,

        Howard

        http://news.starbucks.com/news/a-letter-from-howard-schultz-to-starbucks-partners-regarding-race-together

        ====================

        Perhaps, in the end, Howard Schultz and Starbucks will emerge as the white folk who decided that #TruthAndReconciliation is OUR responsibility, not that of Native Americans, descendents of African slaves and POC, in general.

        Doubt if he’ll ever read it, but it’s a simple a message as I know how to deliver …

        • 63 GGail
          March 22, 2025 at 5:04 pm

          This is a standard corporate letter to his partners (who are no doubt majority white) to console them and himself for this glaring misstep. No where does he state that going forward his campaign will include the people he needs the most to help him diagram this campaign.

          Once again, someone trying to force what they think is the healing balm instead of going to the person who’s hurting.

          I am not impressed.

    • 64 vcprezofan2
      March 22, 2025 at 4:40 pm

      smh - Personally, I think this is a very flip response. It’s so much easier to flip off certain attempts to address a situation (or to start a dialogue) than to try and channel them towards something meaningful.

      I think it’s amazing to wrap your mind around the idea that there may be millions and millions of inhabitable planets in the vast universe. Maybe there are places that got it right-no war, no need to hurt and destroy others, no need to think yourself better than someone else. I find the thought really beautiful and inspiring, although there could be a lot worse places than we even imagine.

    “Ahead of a looming March 31 deadline to formulate a framework deal with Iran, a senior French diplomat said Sunday that Israel’s stance on the issue had become increasingly unworkable.

    The unnamed French official criticized Israel’s position on the Iranian nuclear program as “unrealistic,” and said that Netanyahu went “too far” in a polarizing March 3 address to a joint session of the US Congress on the topic.

    “Israel has marginalized itself. In November 2013, we were working with them and they played the game. They didn’t take unrealistic positions,” the diplomat told Reuters. “But here they have gone too far. We told them to play their part so they could influence a final accord, but they have taken unrealistic positions.””
