A long article about Missouri corruption and how the police have terrorized the states citizens. Incredibly disturbing and is leaving me thinking that the US has a lot to answer for to allow these types of things to occur.

Jeff, this is horrifying. If we heard this kind of treatment of citizens was happening in another country, we would justifiably condemn it. That it’s happening in one of our states is beyond appalling. I don’t know what power the Justice Department can wield in correcting these gross injustices, but I hope it is big and effective. It literally makes me sick to think of what the people of St. Louis county have had to endure. I wish this would become nationally known and universally condemned.

The co-pilot of the Germanwings plane that crashed into the French Alps on Tuesday appeared to want to “destroy the plane”, French officials said.

Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, citing information from the “black box” voice recorder, said the co-pilot was alone in the cockpit.

He intentionally started a descent while the pilot was locked out.

      • 34 amk for obama

they claim the cockpit door was locked from inside. whatever happened, it is an eye opener especially when flying low cost carriers. Apparently the co-pilot was news and who knows what kinda vetting these bare-bones operation airlines did.

Not over GGail - you still have time to learn. Final between Australia and NZ.

Cricket is somewhat similar to baseball - except in this series there is only 1 innings per team & rather than get 3 out - the team fielding have to get all the batters out (well 10 out of 11. Have to be 2 batters at a time).

So there you have it. Final is on Sat 29 March - probably while everyone in the US is asleep :)

99ts, I totally agree on his sloppy appearance. Of course, he doesn’t have the build that PBO does, so suits aren’t going to look as good on him, but they could at least fit properly. He looks as if he hangs his clothes out in the rain and then puts them on damp so they bag all over.

GM all from Chicagoland. Tomorrow it will be the coldest March 27th in 86 years. What a joy.

Cruz continues to lie his head off, but he is a Republican so that is to be expected.

This upcoming GOP primary season should be a delight to watch.

Meanwhile, our President just keeps rolling along getting things done while the GOP tries and fails to stop him.

In a little less than 22 months he will no longer be the President, but he will cast a long shadow and will, I have no doubt, continue to be a major influence in the world.

    from bbc live updates

Sean Maffett, an aviation analyst, says a change in staffing levels might help prevent such incidents in future. “One possible answer to this is to insist all flights have three pilots on board, so there are always two of them on the flight deck. But airlines are run by accountants - that’s horrendously much more expensive. It’s a problem that is not going to be resolved straight away.”

exactly. the fucking bean counters and the fucking I-am-entitled-to-my-riches-without-doing-any-work-whatsoever shareholders.

and the poor passengers. Hope this opens up a big lawsuit and all the airlines wake up to the reality of safety standards. apparently, this aircraft had some issues the day before and was magically certified as airworthy.

        • March 26, 2025 at 10:08 am

I hate conspiracy decisions with a passion …. but isn’t it so convenient that a dead pilot is being blamed for this? Mind you, people with a fear of flying will probably be as afraid now of suicidal pilots as they are of malfunctioning planes.

          • 68 57andfemale
            March 26, 2025 at 10:13 am

I don’t think this is a conspiracy, Chips. The recorder recorded the sound of the co-pilot’s breathing - he was conscious and nervous. They could hear the pilot outside the door. Maybe they will have to walk some of this back, but it sounds to me like they have a good deal of credible evidence.

            • 69 99ts
              March 26, 2025 at 10:18 am

How do they know he was conscious? What am I missing? Can you tell from hearing someone breathing? Could he simply have had a panic attack being let alone?

              • 70 amk for obama
                March 26, 2025 at 10:22 am

He is a pilot. Panic attacks aren’t criteria by which one becomes a pilot. And what prevented him to unlock the door (if it was an automated lock in the first place) and more importantly, what prevented him to fly the plane solo (which he is trained to do).

                • 71 99ts
                  March 26, 2025 at 10:27 am

I have no idea on any of it - I just cannot comprehend a pilot doing what has been suggested. Which is not to say he didn’t do same.

                  • 72 amk for obama
                    March 26, 2025 at 10:30 am

Till the eighties, a pilot’s job used to be prestigious , well paying and with lotsa rest periods between flights. After the ‘low cost carriers’ came into the scene, that all went through the window. I remember reading a piece about pilots being camped out near LAX airport waiting for ‘that call’. Who know this what this one was suffering from?

              • 73 57andfemale
                March 26, 2025 at 11:37 am

They could tell by the sound of his breathing. They actually have ways of reading this kind of information: If you’re unconscious, the breathing is different. Also, he had to have locked the door from the inside so that the pilot could not override from outside the cockpit. The black box also shows a deliberate move on his part to put the plane on descent. At least that is what the officials are saying, well, officially.

            • March 26, 2025 at 10:21 am

You’re right 57, I think I’m just so suspicious of the airline industry and the enormous vested interests in this story that I’m doing what I vowed never to do: not dismiss conspiracy theories. If the recording is independently verified then that’s that, it was down to a suicidal pilot.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2015/03/26/morning-plum-what-the-gop-budgets-really-tell-us-about-gops-economic-agenda/

the House GOP leadership successfully passed a budget that would cut $5.5 trillion in spending, repealing Obamacare, block-granting (a.k.a., cutting) Medicaid, and slashing away at food stamps, education, and many other programs. If the Senate this week passes its budget, which contains similar cuts, Republicans in both chambers will try to put them together, and hold a vote on the whole package.

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities looked at the specified and unspecified reductions in both budgets — which were required to meet the goal of balance in 10 years with zero in new revenues — and determined that each would get at least two thirds of its cuts from programs that help lower income Americans.

the GOP budgets are rooted in the idea that one of the primary obstacles to economic opportunity and mobility is that there is too much government-engineered downward redistribution of wealth. It’s reasonable to surmise that the GOP presidential candidates implicitly share this analysis. As Paul Waldman writes, many of the candidates have flirted with the idea of a flat (i.e., less progressive) tax. Ted Cruz sees the repeal of Obamacare and a flat tax as pivotal to restoring opportunity for our children. Scott Walker is flirting with the party’s most prominent supply siders. Even Jeb Bush, who is said to be the most moderate of the bunch, tacitly premised his big economic speech on the idea that the primary driver of inequality is dependence on the federal government.

Got that? “There’s too much government engineered downward distribution of wealth.” In other words, too much help for the peons. America…wakey wakey! They just aren’t into you!!!
