Arkansas Governor Asks Lawmakers to Recall Contentious Religious Freedom Bill
    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/02/us/arkansas-indiana-religious-freedom-hutchinson-pence.html?_r=0

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas on Wednesday called on the state lawmakers to recall or amend legislation billed as a religious freedom measure to make it mirror a federal version passed in 1993.

Mr. Hutchinson, a Republican, said he understood how divided the state and the country was over same-sex marriage and religious freedom — his own son, Seth, had asked him to veto the bill, which critics say could allow individuals and businesses to discriminate against gay men and lesbians.

He said he was also considering using an executive order that would make “Arkansas a place of tolerance.”

“This is a bill that in ordinary times would not be controversial,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “But these are not ordinary times.”

The legislation, which easily cleared the state House by lopsided margins, has created a political rift in the state, with Mark Stodola, the mayor of Little Rock, sending a letter to Governor Hutchinson this week urging him to veto the bill, saying it would have “a negative impact on our state’s image.”

Gov Hutchinson is between a financial rock and a republican hard place…

Several businesses, including the state’s largest employer, Walmart, as well as the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, the Arkansas Municipal League and other civic groups have come out against the legislation.

Mr. Hutchinson’s announcement comes a day after his counterpart in Indiana, Mike Pence, found him in a tenuous political predicament as he sought to satisfy both the business interests that have threatened to punish the state for its new religious freedom law and local conservatives who fought for the measure and do not want to see it diluted.

Even though I was very disappointed in the low voter turnout all over the US in November, I’m encouraged by this awesome push back on this legislation - and - this puts the States that have this bill ratified on notice that they too will be observed.

I would like all the countries and I think especially African countries these racist republicans went to that encouraged these countries to make being gay or lesbian a crime, can come to America as political refugees…..that will teach them to spread their hate to other countries when their own country won’t tolerate it.

But Wal-Mart did it because of the people who spend money at their locations.

If only each & every individual realized how much power they possess, singularly and collectively. Which is what PBO tries to instill in each of us - you DO have power and control over your elected officials.

Heard a segment on NPR this morning that seemed to be helping Walmart revise their company’s image. I know they are promising to raise their workers’ minimum wages, and construct downtown Walmarts more attractively in city centers. The sound bites presented people saying they were bringing more customers to the smaller businesses by being in the area. I am not so naive to think that last argument is true. I wonder if they are still augmenting their employees’ wages by signing them up for food stamps? I believe their avoidance of paying corporate taxes or requiring states to lessen them to do business in that state and not paying livable wages to their employees as well as undercutting prices inorder to put others out of business results in corporate welfare or the likes of the GOP’s dreaded Government entitlement talking point.

Hi jojo. Me too! It gets me to no end when people don’t think “we the people” have any power to make change. The dollars of the lower and middle class citizens are what keep each city/state moving along. The rich 1% are too busy stashing their dollars overseas and living off of the dividends while we spend what we got.

It is very sad that his family and organizations had to fight for his right to be put on the heart transplant list only to die allegedly in the course of committing a crime. Saying he had past criminal trouble, poor, black and would not take his treatment seriously was no excuse to leave him off the list. They are required to put people who are already in jail on this list and are entitled to get a heart transplant and the state pays for it. I feel sorry for his mother and family that he died so prematurely.

Lausanne Has Kerry-Mania [Yes, it’s from BuzzFeed]

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Secretary of State John Kerry has never really set people’s hearts aflame at home. But here in Switzerland, where he is attempting to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran, Kerry seems to have found his target audience.
Swiss French-language daily 24 heures dubbed Kerry a “weapon of mass seduction” on the front page of their Tuesday edition:
    …………………….

Marine, a waitress at the Boccalino pizzeria about a block away from the Beau Rivage, told 24 heures about her experience taking a selfie with Kerry.

“I think this man needs and wants to mingle with people,” Marine, the waitress, told 24 heures.

While taking a walk outside on Wednesday, one day after the initial deadline for a political framework agreement in the talks, Kerry was greeted by a crowd of fans across the street yelling “We love you John!”

I have thought if Kerry can get a deal he would be a wonderful repeat candidate for POTUS. I am aware he lost the run once before and was swift boated. Also that Democratic candidates do not seem to run more than once if they were the Dem Candidate that lost before. The previous loss could be the reason to eliminate him.

But in recent elections, the Koch Brothers have thrown their financial weight behind candidates who have a record of putting more people in prison, keeping them there for longer and spending more money on mass incarceration. By giving large direct donations and by funneling money through their complex web of proxy groups, they’ve backed so-called ‘tough on crime’ candidates even as they call publicly for a move away from that philosophy. This contradiction raises questions about the Koch brothers’ place in the bipartisan criminal justice reform coalition and who they will support in 2016 and beyond.

I think John Kerry and Barack Obama are far, far too eager for a deal with Iran, and could actually get a better deal if they walked away from the table and possibly came back later,” Scarborough said. “Why am I wrong, Howard?”“I actually think you’re right about this,” Dean replied, prompting an outburst of surprise from Scarborough.

// …………………………….. African Americans have become highly attuned to racist “dog whistles” in politics. ……………………………

As we fast forward to 2008 and the election of this country’s first African American president, those dog whistles from conservatives weren’t so hidden when a group of tea partiers rose up to challenge his place of birth. But in addition to the more blatant racism, there were plenty of dog whistles too. Here’s a reader at TPM explaining what s/he saw in 2011 when Speaker Boehner had some issues with scheduling a joint address to Congress by President Obama over the jobs crisis.

“When Boehner does something like this (that no previous Speaker has done to any previous President), when he refuses to return the President’s phone call during the debt ceiling crisis, when he skips state dinners, when he refuses to definitely say that he believes the President was born in the US or is a Christian, or when Boehner coddles a member of his caucus who shout “you lie” during a Presidential address, etc one certain thing happens - black Americans notice it.

African-Americans are especially sensitive to the unprecedented disrespect that white Republicans have afforded to the first black President. Every time it happens, it ripples across black radio, black newspapers, black websites, and in conversations in black communities. It helps cement the ties that Obama has with the black community, and helps overcome whatever doubts and disappoints some may have. It reminds people who have experienced covert racism in their own lives that the President is experiencing the same kind of dehumanizing disrespect.”
