It Takes How Much Water to Grow an Almond?!
California, supplier of nearly half of all US fruits, veggies, and nuts, is on track to experience the driest year in the past half millennium. Farms use about 80 percent of the state’s “developed water,” or water that’s moved from its natural source to other areas via pipes and aqueducts. As the maps above show, much of California’s agriculture is concentrated in the parts of the state that the drought has hit the hardest. For example: Monterey County, which is currently enduring an “exceptional drought,” according to the US Drought Monitor, grew nearly half of America’s lettuce and broccoli in 2012. When it comes to water use, not all plants are created equal….continued”
“I’ve been smiling all the way to the bank,” said pistachio farmer John Dean at a conference hosted this month by Paramount Farms, the mega-operation owned by Stewart Resnick, a Beverly Hills billionaire known for his sprawling agricultural holdings, controversial water dealings, and millions of dollars in campaign contributions to high-powered California politicians including Governor Jerry Brown, former governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gray Davis, and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.
The record drought now entering its fourth year in California has alarmed the public, left a number of rural communities without drinking water, and triggered calls for mandatory rationing. There’s no relief in sight: The winter rainy season, which was a bust again this year, officially ends on April 15. Nevertheless, some large-scale farmers are enjoying extraordinary profits despite the drought, thanks in part to infusions of what experts call dangerously under-priced water….continued
GE LP.
I heard an interesting interview yesterday on the local all-news radio station, @knx1070, with a reporter from @sacbee, who said:
. 12% of CA water use is consumed (or used for laundry, bathing, etc.) by residents
. most golf courses will be unaffected by new water regulations, since they use reclaimed water (yay, PBO can still keep CA on his list of post-Presidency housing :) )
. recent regulation requires that all homes and businesses are outfitted with water meters, which is the standard for SoCal, has been for as long as I can remember. However, few in NoCal have meters (!) — the reporter said that one was recently installed at his house, but it hasn’t been turned on yet. NorCal is suffering more from this unending drought than SoCal — our hillsides are still green from the weekly soaking we got in January — for the first time in years. Unfortunately, we’re enduring a week-long 90+ heat wave, so they will be brown soon, and will become unwanted fodder for our inevitable wildfires.
Bottom line — Silicon Valley and the rest of NorCal will soon have to join reality and actually consider the amount of water they’re wasting.
I saw a news piece about those meters you were mentioning…they were these new digital thingies that were supposed to report directly to the water dept. to send you a fine when you went over your limit. I know you are required a 25% reduction now but what is the baseline? People use less water in the winter so I’m not sure if how they will enforce it?
This dude on CBS says that “renegade” meteorologists are claiming climate-change….but he does have an interesting theory
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/california-gov-jerry-brown-water-use-limit-mandate-will-it-make-a-difference/
I read Hyperspace by Kaku about 20 years ago (can’t believe it’s been that long ago!), and the article you linked to sounds like he’s saying that it’s controversial to say that man-made activity is causing current weather patterns because the change might just be a shift in the high pressure system off of Cali due to a natural cycle.
Don’t know enough to have an opinion on this, but I do know that it’s been very summer-like many days this Winter/Spring. During past Winters we might use less water than in the summer, but since it feels like Summer (and it’s light until 7:30 pm, here in the south), using less water in the Winter might not be so true now. :(
Spectacular Nerdy, you know I ran out of words ages ago, so - just: thank you!!
Awww….you’re welcome, Chips.
BEFORE THE IPHONE, man had rocks.
“The first true multi-tools were of course rocks. Take the chopper, a crude tool chipped from the volcanic stone nephelinite. First used in Tanzania some 1.85 million years ago, it was the stone-age equivalent of the smartphone. Grant me the imperfect comparison: For thousands of years, the chopper served most of humanity’s needs. It was used to hunt, to dig, to build and butcher. No, we don’t use our smartphones for those things exactly, but they are similarly indispensable….
…As our needs and desires have increased in complexity, so too have the number and nature of our tools. Just think: A million years ago, humans were content with a handful of rocks and sticks. The sheer number of objects humans use today is not just impressive, it’s downright bonkers. Perhaps the best place to appreciate this is the third floor of the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York. In its exhibition, Tools: Extending Our Reach, the museum tracks how humanity’s tools have progressed from the chopper to the Apple MacBook and beyond….continued”

“….Giora Eiland, a retired general and former head of Israel’s national security council, said that Israel’s ability to influence the international stance toward Iran had eroded in recent years because Netanyahu’s position has not changed, while the views of the United States and other powers had evolved. “We ended up holding an extreme position which over time became less and less relevant,” Eiland told Israel Radio. “Actually, people stopped listening to us.”
Eiland argued that Israel should now take a fallback position, adopt a more conciliatory stance toward Washington and offer to discuss the details of the final deal, in the hope of helping shape them. Nahum Barnea, a prominent columnist in the mass-circulation daily Yediot Ahronot, argued that the Israeli military option against Iran had become obsolete, and the new accord amounted to a defeat of Israeli diplomacy. “The truth should be told,” he wrote. “This was a resounding failure for Israel. As the confrontation between Netanyahu and Obama over Iran worsened, Israel’s influence over the course of the negotiations and its outcome diminished.” Barak Ravid, diplomatic correspondent for the liberal Haaretz newspaper, wrote that despite the “Pavlovian” Israeli response to the accord, “this is not a bad deal at all,” and “a closer look at the details shows that the agreement has many positive points that serve Israel’s security interest and address the concerns in Jerusalem.”….”
I’ll say it again ….

Thanks for these perspectives, LP. It’s good to hear some Israeli voices of sanity.
There was other help as well, including a supporter-led Facebook page. George Kasimos, an advocate who founded the website StopFemaNow.com, helped to promote and attended a rally supporting Menendez on Wednesday evening. He said the senator had helped victims of Superstorm Sandy immensely.

Best verbiage in a tweet award tonight:
“Friend of mine in #Iran pinching #Obama’s cheek out of sheer joy #IranTalks”
When America goes to war with Iran I want to see the disgusting Senator Tom Cotton to lead the battle.
When I hear people talk about how dysfunctional Washington is, sane people know exactly why that is. It’s because of these extreme racists right wing tea party Republicans who have no ideal how to govern, all they care about is showing their disrespect and hatred for this black President.

Nerdy, before you started posting nightly tweets, people could sometimes comfort themselves that we lived in a sane world. Your tweets make that illusion impossible. Each night you bring one jaw-dropping example after another of horrifying, tragic, cruel or just plain absurd things happening across the planet, with the only consistently sane thing being our president. It isn’t comforting, but it sure is true. Thank you for keeping it real.
“Thank you for keeping it real.” - The highest of compliments, indeed.

Hey, boys and girls, could it be time for yet ANOTHER story about my great grandson?
After some minor transgression of his, who cares what, I looked up at the stuffed Easter Bunny on a shelf, and then gave the four year old a stern look.
Luckily, he instantly reacted. Trouble is, how he reacted was to instantly jump up and say to me, “OHMIGOD your face is SO CUTE!”
And then there were hugs all around. The end.
Hahahahahahahahahah. The art of dodging the punishment. Well played young Yoda.
<3 What makes us all laugh is that - as all little kids do - he's "teaching himself the language." But what he's really doing, mostly, is storing certain phrases he's heard in his little brain so he can use them "against" us at a later time! It's hysterical to watch.
OMG, this is so incredibly funny and SO CUTE. LOLz. Reminds me of my great niece who knew she was about to get into trouble and as her father began to give her a stern look, she said, “Can we discuss this?”
:D :D :D
Delightful, Jacqueline!! Thank you!!
Thank you, Bob!

Evening, Alma-b!
Yo, TODobots! About our next Chips-Obama Travel adventure to the W. Indies >> I have both good news and bad news.
The bad news is that, dreams and phone calls notwithstanding, there’s no way under the sun(ny Caribbean), *I* am going to get a ticket to be in PBO’s speech. :(
The good news is that security is awesomely tight! When I heard some of what’s been done in this area so far, I was greatly reassured….and very pleased. My first thought listening to this was that TODland would love the way this sounds too. The WH security etc. team has been on site at the university where PBO will speak since this past week and they are the only ones with keys to the areas where he’ll be meeting with the young people. In fact, security has been completely in their hands. Age of the intended audience is 18-35 and the several deans of the UWI are unlikely to get in; *they* only got a handful of tickets - literally. Apparently the audience will be a combination from different countries in the area (each allowed a certain specific number). I was told what the focus of the speech would be and the intended PBO launch but I’ve forgotten. Hey, I was flitting between disappointment that I couldn’t physically be there and huge satisfaction that the arrangements for PBO’s visit, etc. etc were excessively tight, with entire areas close to the speaking venue under lockdown…..already.
Conclusion = I’ll be travelling to this event with the C-OT after all! Let me know what time we are leaving, Chips, please….and BTW, I hope your new bed is comfy as well as stable.

The Rare Courage and Respect That Drove Iran Deal
The men and women who conducted this diplomacy deserve great thanks from the entire world.
“… the historic lessons to be learned about the power of negotiations over threats. More specifically, this is about the capacity of serious and responsible leaders to advance a diplomatic negotiation by having the courage and confidence to change positions they had long held, but that had become untenable over time. “

But religion loves to pretend persecution, even when it basks in power and privilege. Nothing proclaims piety like martyrdom. And nothing threatens religion like having to respect other beliefs, not even when your God and his prophet specifically command you to do so.
The only reason for “religious freedom restoration” laws, the entire reason for such laws, is to give legal protection to bigots so that they may openly treat others as less than full citizens under the shield of religion.
Religious Freedom laws do not protect liberty, they take it away.
Truth.
The bigots try anything to pass around the hate
US court finds school yoga does not violate religious freedom after parents’ complaint (parents of 2 children)
“A California court has ruled that yoga classes taught at an elementary school do not violate students’ right to religious freedom, after parents complained Hindu and Buddhist doctrines were being promoted.”

Prayers were also said asking “when the death penalty will be abolished” and when every form of “torture and the violent killing of innocent people will come to an end” around the globe - and not just relating to Christians. Works for me.
you have to wonder if such a vote would pass today…keeping in mind the attacks on women…the difficulty in passing the VAWA…The VRA…the discrimination bills…etc
Dr. King, always in our hearts
We celebrate his singular life each time we
think of his good works
and the hope and change he brought.
We commemorate his birth in January.
We visit his memorial on the mall
Year-round.
We tell his remarkable story
to the little children of today.
We’d rather leave the marking of the date
he was assassinated in Memphis
to the history books.
But all of it is what we were given
and what he was given.
And, this year, as we recall it was
forty-seven years ago on April 4
that his “four little children”
lost him …
Let us not forget about them
as we rejoice that he belonged to the world
for as long as he did
as we examine the “content of his character”
around the globe, as long as we all still do.
In our minds, we will remember him
and that our voices must keep
challenging the injustices
as we keep yearning for equality for all.
That night,
Robert Kennedy suggested
we dedicate ourselves
to what the Greeks had written
many years before:
“To tame the savageness of man and
make gentle the life of this world.”
A man named Barack Obama,
also in our hearts,
who later
became our President,
surely has dedicated himself to
“taming the savageness of man”
throughout the world
and to a “more perfect union”
here at home.
This year, no matter our religious beliefs
or non-beliefs,
it seems quite fitting somehow,
if only for the history books,
that the date we recall sits between
Good Friday and Passover and Easter
while prayers from other faiths are also
being said,
around the clock,
all over the globe,
in the interests of the human race.
Dr. King, always in our hearts.
Hope and change, always on the horizon,
to “make gentle the life of this world.”
Thirty-nine years old here, and oh the miles he had traveled.
Am so glad that I saw this treasure before departing, Jacqueline, and can only hope that Chips & NW will feature it, tomorrow.
Yes, “Dr. King, always in our hearts.”
Having lived through 4 April 2025 ….. and then 6 June 2025 ………… the horror will never leave me ….
good night friend
#TrustBarack
#ThankBarack …. every second of your life …….
Good night, friend - and thank you … many of us here on TOD remember both dates - and the horror - as though it were yesterday.
#Forward
Good night, dear friend …. I’m totally overwhelmed with grief as if I was living those days again …. weeping uncontrollably …. we must do better … we must …..
Bob - Let the tears wash away the feeling of being overwhelmed, and sleep knowing there are many more people AWAKE in 2015 than there were in 1968 and many other troublesome years. We must do better, we have to keep looking for the strength to keep at it, no matter who we are or where or how we live. We don’t have the answers yet, but we have - once again - been reminded that we are the ones we’ve been waiting for. Good night.
Bob - If you’re still awake … For some reason, this particular song at the time of the first Inaugural comes into my mind often. If you have time to listen, just a reminder to watch the President’s reaction around @1:56. If he can hang in there, we can. And I’m outta here!
So moving and perfect in the moment. The love and connection in this performance……There will never be another inauguration of this caliber. Never!
Thank you so much, Jacqueline for your comforting message.
I’ve been thinking about you, Bob! And now I plan to go do something else for a while, to keep my thoughts from only being on the past … and not the beautiful present and/or the best future we can envision! (I remember an older black gentleman I used to work with in the ’90s … every time I’d ask how he were doing, he’d say “It’s a daily struggle” - and yet with a big smile on his face - and if he could keep his spirits up, so can I, I’d think!) Later.
Those of us who lived through the horrific grief and sadness of that era - so much bloodshed of great men, the attempt to quash great ideas - will never get over the sudden loss, the terror, the disbelief, the quiet despair of what happened. But you put it so perfectly: we must do better……we must.
Thank you, meta
I hope Pope Francis features the #IranDeal in his Easter message.
good night TOD

Yes We Can
Bob - I’m recalling that behind the scenes (without being touched by the politics of it), Pope Francis played a part in the Cuba situation … as both countries acknowledged, at the time … so one can only hope these world leaders are working together again.
TOD, we know the brilliance of our President Obama and this piece reflects just how deep he got into the technical details of the Iran deal. He is so deeply conscious of all aspects and ramifications, a scholar of diplomacy:
