Lesley Jane Seymour: Michelle Obama Guest-Edits More!
A little over a year ago, we started tossing around ideas about how we could collaborate with Mrs. Obama. At the time, having her serve as the first-ever guest editor of More seemed like a crazy dream, but it was at the top of my list. We knew that partnering on an issue would be a lot of work—I’m not sure the White House understood exactly how much!—but we were thrilled when they said yes.
This is truly the First Lady’s issue. From the beginning, she said she didn’t want the whole magazine to be about her. It was hard to take off my editor’s hat and not focus all of my attention on the person on the cover. Instead, we shifted our focus to the people, causes and opportunities she cares about. The First Lady always asks how her initiatives—Let’s Move, Joining Forces, Reach Higher and Let Girls Learn—are moving the needle and having more impact on the world. We hope this issue will empower readers to create positive change, whether by supporting one of the First Lady’s programs or another cause.

Darlene Superville: Michelle Obama Will Be ‘Guest Editor’ Of More Magazine
She’s a wife, mother and lawyer, an advocate for children and military families, and first lady of the United States. Now Michelle Obama has added a new gig: magazine editor. The first lady is “guest editor” of the July-August issue of More, which bills itself as the magazine for “women of style and substance.” It was a first for both the White House and the magazine industry, said Lesley Jane Seymour, More’s editor-in-chief. “There’s never been a first lady who’s ever guest-edited a magazine and certainly not a sitting first lady,” Seymour told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “She’s really the editor,” Seymour said. She said the edition focuses on Mrs. Obama’s “point of view on the world and it’s from her eyes.” “Guest editor” wasn’t just a fancy title. The first lady had to pitch story ideas and write and approve copy for the 148-page issue, Seymour said.

She “was reading every page and asking for changes up until the last minute,” Seymour said. “She had to approve absolutely everything. She had to suggest various things, too.” Staff handled stories about fashion and beauty, along with basic functions of the magazine. The theme of the issue is having “More Impact.” Mrs. Obama said she welcomed the opportunity to share some of her White House experiences with like-minded readers. “What I want readers to understand is that impact comes in all forms, shapes and sizes. And hopefully through this issue, what people will see is that you can have impact as a military mom changing careers, or you can be a young person starting a business or you can be the first lady and start a whole initiative,” Mrs. Obama said in a written statement released by More. The issue highlights the first lady’s four priorities: helping children live healthier lives, supporting military families, encouraging young people to pursue education past high school and helping girls around the world attend and stay in school. It also includes pieces on her long-serving chief of staff and senior adviser, two women who have influenced the first lady’s work.

Michelle Obama: What Women Owe One Another
When Barack was first running for President back in 2008, I made what I thought was an innocuous comment about how, if he were elected, my most important job would be “mom-in-chief.” The response was swift and passionate. Some people thought this was great, a sign that I had my priorities in order and was doing what was right for my family. Some were less positive, concerned that I was devaluing my professional achievements and ambitions.
As for me, I was just confused. The way I saw it, embracing my role as mom-in-chief didn’t mean dismissing what I’d accomplished in my career or shortchanging the important work of being First Lady—on the contrary, I planned to pour myself into the job and do everything I could to have a real impact on people’s lives. I was just stating a simple truth: The most important thing in my life is raising my two daughters.

Nerdy - I’m here!
Hahaha.
Welcome, Ms. J’OB! :)
Ha! Beautiful post!
You’ve earned a gift :)
“This month marks the 100th anniversary of T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” published when Eliot was just 26 years old. Had it not been for the intervention of Ezra Pound and Harriet Monroe, the seminal poem that helped usher in American Modernism might not have been published at all.
Eliot originally wrote parts of the monologue of a troubled, middle-aged man in 1910 and soon combined these pieces to form the long, complicated poem readers know now. Then he put it in a drawer for four years and focused on his graduate study in philosophy.
In the spring of 1914, Conrad Aiken, Eliot’s college friend, passed “Prufrock” along to Harold Monro, editor of Poetry and Drama. He reportedly remarked that the poem is “absolutely insane” and turned it down.
In September 1914, Eliot first met Pound in London, who was then the acting foreign correspondent of Poetry. Eliot showed him “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” and Pound was elated. “Prufrock,” wrote Pound to Poetry editor Harriet Monroe, is “the best poem I have yet had or seen from an American,” adding exuberantly in all caps, “PRAY GOD IT BE NOT BE A SINGLE AND UNIQUE SUCCESS.””

=============
TY NW for sharing the news of the first ever First Lady as magazine Editor!!
:)
Oh, Bob - thank you! Off to read this!
So, Bob, the highest initial compliment of a poem is to have an editor call it “absolutely insane”? Something we all should strive for, eh?
Love this article. Thanks again for taking the time to share it!

Congrats to J’OB and Betsy on First/Furst :-)
Congrats to everyone who came after them :D
Thank you Annieb for providing us with this FLOTUS scoop!
You are welcome GGail.
:) How are you today, GGail?
Hiya J’OB, I’m holding my own today - how are you sweetie? <3
Doing good, thanks!
Who in their right mind could not love Michelle Obama? She is a National TREASURE! <3
Those who love our awesome First Lady are inspired and motivated to grow toward their best selves. Those who hate her find themsleves confronted by the unforgiving hand of KARMA. Also, Michelle Obama is the first FLOTUS either sitting or retired to have edited a magazine edition. FIRST! which in and of itself is a HUGE achievement.
No truer words were ever spoken. I treasure her.
I can’t speak for everyone her, but I do think we all treasure her, we treasure all the Obamas.
Hi all! I’ve just come back from my “needle in the lung” procedure which took about four hours from admission to prep to surgery time to recovery. In the end, they extracted 34 ounces of fluid from my right lung, which really explained all the discomfort I was having. It will take 48 hours before I learn why the fluid is forming and what I can do about it, but I’m so glad to have the ordeal behind him. Have to say I was a nervous wreck and got little sleep last night, but the valium they gave me helped put a rosier glow on things. If nothing else, these last few weeks have given me a new appreciation for all the little miracles our bodies perform every day, like breathing in and breathing out and digesting food. I’m resolving to take fewer things for granted in the future.

{{{{{{Jackie}}}}}—what Nena wrote and misspat said
So gld you got that behind you. Wishing you all the best!
Thanks, misspat.
MAJOR HUGS to you, jackieg. Wowzers, that’s a LOT of fluid. You must be very relieved to have that done.
Holding you in our thoughts for positive and effective treatment SOONish!! Breathing deeply is very important for our well-being!!
JackieG, thanks for letting us know that you have returned from the procedure. Let’s hope this will put you on the road to real recovery! {{{hugs}}}
jackieg, so glad the first part of the process is over. We will be looking forward to learning the diagnosis too…..that was a big pitcher of fluid to be in one’s lung! You must feel much better. Now…….get a very good rest :-)
{{{JG}}} Hoping for good results and some peace of mind for you.
Terrific news, JackieG! Happy to hear you got through that in good spirits and that an answer re the cause is around the corner. I certainly hope you’ll be back to normal and can resume your daily walking (if that’s what you want) without pain or stress.
Thinking of you jackie - take care of you
{{{{JackieG}}}} will be hoping for the best outcome possible!!
34 ounces?!?!?! Oh. My. GOD.
Be well, my dear friend. Lots of positive and healing energy sent your way……..
<3

The Truth Wins always………
Kirk Outing Graham :?:
Apparently Mark KIrk’s “ho” divorced him in 2009. I think any man who refers to women as hos should probably think about hooking up with another bro.
He’s dirt, for sure …
Everyone in IL still thinks he’s gay.
One of those Open Secrets in IL: Kirk was a “confirmed bachelor” and then wanted to run for statewide office, got married quick and got an even quicker divorce. The rumors have swirled around Kirk his entire career. No one gives a damn except the RWNJ’s who now own him.
He’s a POS no matter what.
Hey, maybe he’d like to quickly apologizing for his votes? He’s scared of Lindsey Graham but doesn’t give a damn about the citizens of the U.S.
Why am I always left behind. I was over the last thread commenting away. I am going to be late for my own funeral! To the DC folks I will be in DC in July on vacation. I will buy you lunch at one of the President’s favorite eating spot. We might get lucky!
‘I am going to be late for my own funeral!’
That seems like a good thing to me. ;)
Hmm?
GOP?
You cheered and supported the KOCHroaches spending Billions over the years supporting the GOP……..Now a Concern?
Oh so the billionaire Koch brothers really don’t give a fuck about you after all, even though you do their bidding?
WoW, she was fired? Oh Snap!
Thanks NW for letting us know
YES WE CAN
That #TBT reminded me of this which I spotted on the weekend
Ahh that’s beautiful!!
It’s so cuuuute.
Hi GrandmaDD and G-AuntDD! I rarely get to chat with you these days. How are the little princesses? Are they telling stories yet?
Hey VC. The summer is rolling right along. Today I get a break from work so I get to play with the big kids for a change. :)
Now you tell me when the day is virtually over! Not that I could have brought my ball to the game to-day. Nevertheless, niiice to see you playing and hope you had a great time away from the office.
I generally wait for the ‘sting’ in these articles and I almost always find one. Here are the concluding paragraphs of this article…
// …….
And beyond simple moves in the numbers, all of these data-points ignore the more basic question of what changes American political attitudes and sentiments. Has Mr. Obama’s presidency been transformational in some way or has he simply presided over a period of transition? Has his time in the Oval Office been a cause of change or an effect? That’s a complicated question - the same one could be asked of Mr. Reagan’s transformational time in the White House.
In the most basic sense, the recent data suggest the country has moved leftward during the Obama Administration as the American electorate begins to look ahead to 2016. The why isn’t as important what it could mean for the next presidential election.
I fail to see anything ‘complicated’ about using all available date and formulating an answer to the question >> “Has Mr. Obama’s presidency been transformational in some way or has he simply presided over a period of transition?” Have I told you late that I hate U.S media?
O, I omitted to say that the first part of the article very reasonably shared some of the ways PBO’s presence had reversed polls & etc.
Must be someone who had never had to think about their own healthcare, or gone without - ever. Simpletons. Not worth reading.
Reagan was a fraud, horrible for California and for our nation.
I AGREE…REAGAN WAS A FRAUD…AN EXPENSIVE FRAUD AT THAT!…NANCY HELPED!
Thank you
We appreciate your feedback.
Oops, not sure how this got here! Weird.
Here’s the full article: http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/2015/06/02/when-the-supreme-court-is-this-wrong-its-time-to-overrule-them/
Markos is on point with this one!
The Koch brothers aren’t out telling their party’s grassroots that they’ve already lost a year before the election. And in any case, Democrats outspent Republicans last cycle, even when considering the Koch types (the Kochs spent $100 million in 2014, but Democrats outraised Republicans by $200 million). Money wasn’t the Democrats’ problem. It was base turnout. And there’s no way that telling your strongest supporters every single f****** day that the election is already lost boosts turnout or excitement. None!
So congratulations, DCCC. You are the best money raising committee around. Huzzah! But remind me again what your mission is? Because last time I checked, it wasn’t to raise the most money. It was to elect Democrats.
And if you can’t spend that money to win, like in the disastrous 2014 cycle, then what good is it?
those emails got re-directed to my junk mail long ago. Its like everyone has a terrible case of ODS, it infects all they do. PBO is positive all the time? well then we’ll go negative! sheesh.
DWS has been a failure of epic proportions. Like, seriously, she seems like a GOP plant to me.
Bingo! kid kanga
It looks like our Dr. Jill will keep her agreement to christen this ship tomorrow……Our hearts are with you Jill and Gabby.
OOOOPPPsss, sorry, that will be on Saturday, not tomorrow.
Poor clueless Abby Huntsman of The Cycle. So busy checking her hair in the mirror she forgot she’d blocked me on twitter. Almost wasn’t able to point out another teachable moment for the dear rightwinger. :)
WWWOOOOOWWWWW
Serious!!!???? OMG, thank GOD.
I am so glad that there was an attorney willing to do the necessary research needed to go around the Prosecutor who was clearly dragging his feet.
Justice - finally for this little boy and his family.
Crossing my fingers for Justice for Tamir Rice.
FYI - probable cause to file charges ….
Now, let’s hope that that happens!!!
You can view the entire ruling at this link - http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jun/11/tamir-rice-police-officer-murder-charge?CMP=share_btn_tw

Doing my happy dance. I wish I knew how to get that sticky thing here! Took them long enough. Now we shall see.
Today is a happy day for me but He did say to pray earnestly and that’s what I’ve been doing. Now let me stop and thank Him.
Thank God! Now let’s get justice for this child!
Good. Fire racist teachers. No severance.
Charge murderous Police with Homicide Murder/Hate Crimes.
No more black people to die or be abused at the hands of racist teachers or police officers. Nothing less will do.
FIRED! Not paid administrative leave. FIRED! That was swift…as it should be.
That’s right. We should not have our children exposed to evil like this woman. And I mean that for all of our children.
But it passeddddddd,,,,whooooooooooooo hoooooooooooo
The ACA passed by a close vote as well…and look a what Obamacare has done!!!!
True enough.
Good For Them!
Has there ever been such a long campaign against a President’s initiative by His Own Party as there has been with the TPP and the TAA????
It is so ugly. So unseemly.
I’m really sickened by it. They all refuse to understand how much trade and labor are changing and how this protects the U.S. and our workers.
Vicki and Meta, Dems being negative here frustrate me because they cannot see that their position reflects poorly on them. To me they’re basically saying ‘We don’t want change. We’ve never liked trade deals and we NEVER will’, instead of discussing how to make them work in our favour. They are too lazy to work out possible solutions to improve things. IOW, they have little understanding or will to move the country #FORWARD, and they don’t care to learn. We have some basically dumb people leading on both sides, if you ask me. They have little wish to ‘grow’ the country much beyond the point where voters return them to power so that *they* can maintain their lucrative status quo.
BINGO BINGO BINGO. This is it, expressly stated. That is precisely why they torment me. We have a very, very progressive POTUS who thinks deeply and strategically for the long game and then there’s these mopes. I really can’t stand the disjoint.
Problem IMO is that they are so far down the road of apathy and status quo politics that they are mostly irredeemable. We know this because even 6+ years of an excellent leader has not shaken them awake. What we need (and won’t get) is newer blood, but many are so entrenched that a slate of newbies would each have to be intelligent , visionary AND charming enough to make the voters choose to push these (admittedly previously somewhat productive) relics aside.
smh/
:D :D
Donna, you are having a great time hanging with the big kids today :-)
Yes I am!!!
<3
Could she be any more beautiful in every way? Don’t think so. Amazing FLOTUS!
Get ready for Mystery Meat….
The House just voted to repeal the ” Country of Origin ” labeling requirement for out meat . They caved under pressure from Canada, Mexico and the WTO .
they want to strip every safeguard for the American Citizens…i wonder how many citizens are aware of this…i would not know if i was not here at TOD…won’t hear about this on the local news
Wow.
Birds of a feather ? What The Huck seems to have many friends with this issue, no ?
Just say you’re sorry and genuflect to Grover Norquist and the Koch Brothers - those are the real GOP gods.
What is it with Huckabee and pedophiles??
Strting to make me wonder…….
This does not look good…..
