“Mother Emanuel” A.M.E. Church History

The history of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church reflects the development of religious institutions for African Americans in Charleston. Dating back to the fall of 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Richard Allen founded the Free African Society, adhering to the Doctrines of Methodism established by John Wesley. In 1816, black members of Charleston’s Methodist Episcopal church withdrew over disputed burial ground, and under the leadership of Morris Brown. The Rev. Morris Brown organized a church of persons of color and sought to have it affiliated with Allen’s church. Three churches arose under the Free African Society and were named the “Bethel Circuit”. One of the Circuit churches was located in the suburbs of Ansonborough, Hampstead, and Cow Alley, now known as Philadelphia Alley in the French Quarters of Charleston. Emanuel’s congregation grew out of the Hampstead Church, located at Reid and Hanover Streets.

In 1822 the church was investigated for its involvement with a planned slave revolt. Denmark Vesey, one of the church’s founders, organized a major slave uprising in Charleston. Vesey was raised in slavery in the Virgin Islands among newly imported Africans. He was the personal servant of slavetrader Captain Joseph Vesey, who settled in Charleston in 1783. Beginning in December 1821, Vesey began to organize a slave rebellion, but authorities were informed of the plot before it could take place. The plot created mass hysteria throughout the Carolinas and the South. Brown, suspected but never convicted of knowledge of the plot, went north to Philadelphia where he eventually became the second bishop of the AME denomination.

During the Vesey controversy, the AME church was burned. Worship services continued after the church was rebuilt until 1834 when all black churches were outlawed. The congregation continued the tradition of the African church by worshipping underground until 1865 when it was formally reorganized, and the name Emanuel was adopted, meaning “God with us”. The wooden two-story church that was built on the present site in 1872 was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of August 31, 1886. The present edifice was completed in 1891 under the pastorate of the Rev. L. Ruffin Nichols. The magnificent brick structure with encircling marble panels was restored, redecorated and stuccoed during the years of 1949-51 under the leadership of the Rev. Frank R. Veal. The bodies of the Rev. Nichols and his wife were exhumed and entomed in the base of the steeple so that they may forever be with the Emanuel that they helped to nurture.

    Think Obama administration, the creame de la creame of any management system. So here’s what’s likely happening. The President was notified shortly after the police learned one of the dead was a state senator. The state senator’s murder is considered an assassination. DHS Secretary and AG Lynch were also notified, prior to PBO. They have all had at least one conference call. FBI and DHS folks are on the ground. You can also expect the NSA is involved, which means they know who he is and probably his general location. They know about his family and friend connections, his criminal record, his mental health and school history and work history. They have also identified any others who may have helped facilitate his act of terrorism. THey have tracked his movement sover the last 72 hours. Those who have learned PBO know that he always works with his cards close to the vest until he has sufficient information to act or speak. I imagine his speech writers are working right now to prepare his statement as well as one for AG Lynch. I trust PBO in all things and under all circumstances.

    Police were scouring on Thursday morning for a white man who gunned down nine people at an historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, as chilling details emerged about the horrific attack.

    Authorities said the shooter, identified as Dylann Roof, arrived at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church nearly an hour before opening fire Wednesday night. He asked for the church’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, and sat next to him during a Bible study meeting, a survivor later told one of Pinckney’s cousins.

    “At the conclusion of the Bible study, from what I understand, they just start hearing loud noises ringing out,” cousin Sylvia Johnson told NBC affiliate WIS-TV, “and he had already wounded — the suspect already wounded a couple of individuals.”

    She said one of those people was Pinckney, a 41-year-old married father of two and Democratic member of the state Senate.

    The female survivor told Johnson that the gunman reloaded five different times and that her son was trying to “talk him out of doing the act of killing people.”

    But he wouldn’t listen, she said.

    “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go,” the shooter told the group, according to the survivor’s account to Johnson.

    My heart aches. Those who claim that racism is dead are in denial. Are lawmakers feeling any remorse for the laws that make it easy for these massacres to occur?!?!?     Reuters reports that the uncle of the 21-year-old suspect was given a gun for his birthday, a .45-caliber pistol. The uncle, Carson Cowles, came forward when he recognized the photo police distributed and described his nephew as “quiet and soft-spoken.”

    The FBI has named Dylann Storm Roof, 21, of Columbia, South Carolina, as the suspected killer of nine people at a black church in Charleston. Roof was previously arrested on April 26 on a trespassing charge and was awaiting moderation. Roof was also recently arrested for possession of a controlled substance on March 3 in Lexington County. A sparse Facebook page shows an image of Roof in a jacket with the flags of apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

    Look at these arrest dates. His birthday is in April sometime…but on March 3 he was arrested for drug possession! So the dad thinks, ” I think I’ll get Dylann a gun for his 21st birthday! He’s so responsible and I think he can handle the responsibility.” What the holy hell was he thinking!!??

    Justices rule for Texas in dispute over Confederate flag license plates

    The Supreme Court upheld Texas’ refusal to issue a license plate bearing the Confederate battle flag, rejecting a free-speech challenge. The court said in a 5-4 ruling that Texas can limit the content of license plates because they are state property and not the equivalent of bumper stickers.

    I think this hits home for so many reasons that are obvious. But, bottom line, this could have been our Mother, our Grandmother, our Uncles, Grandfathers, Daddys. How many of us have dropped off family members or friends at Bible Study, told them, ‘I have to run an errand, but I’ll be back to get you.’ How many of us would think twice if Mama or Grandma told you, ‘ Oh, I’ll just take the baby with me to Bible Study’. It would never occur to us that this would happen. Not only that, but not one of us is surprised that they welcomed this young man into Bible Study with them, because we know that’s what they would do.

    I just can’t with the phuckery today. I have no patience for it.
